One of the things that A Star is Born has taught me is that no one becomes great without going through some sort of adversity. And this story from Lady Gaga’s personal life only proves it. When she was only starting out her career, her haters created a Facebook group called “Stefani Germanotta, you will never be famous.” Recently, people found out about this secret little (and I mean little) community, and immediately fell in love with the irony of it.

Another woman, Lauren Bohn, was a freshman at NYC when she spotted the group. She brought it to media’s attention in 2016 with a powerful Facebook post:

“When I was a freshman at NYU and Facebook was only a year old and people created/joined groups like “I have dimples, f*** me” and “Fake ID, please!,”

You May Also Like:

I remember coming across a Facebook group that broke my heart

It’s name: “Stefani Germanotta, you will never be famous.” The page housed pictures of a pretty Norah Jones-esque young 18-year-old NYU student who sang and played piano at local bars. The group was peppered with comments, sharp as porcupine needles, vilifying the aspiring musician for being an “attention-whore.” Scores asked: “Who does she think she is?” I also remember one dude posting a flyer for one of her upcoming gigs at a local village bar. He had clearly stomped on the flyer, an outline of his muddy sole [soul] struggling to eclipse her name.

I couldn’t shake the raw feeling of filth while scrolling down that Facebook page

but I pretty much — and quickly — forgot about that group and that girl with the intense raven eyes. Until about five years later. I was on an Amtrak train from NYC to Philly, reading a Vanessa Grigoriadis New York Magazine profile on Lady Gaga. I floated somewhat mindlessly through the piece until I got to the first sentence of the second graf:

“Before the meeting, I assumed that someone with a stage name like “Lady” (her given name is Stefani Joanne Germanotta) was going to be a bit standoffish…” HOLY S**T, I screamed to an empty car (Those who hang with me will know that I actually shrieked). LADY GAGA IS STEFANI GERMANOTTA? STEFANI IS LADY GAGA? I was overcome with a dizzying emotional cocktail of stage-mom-at-a-beauty-pageant and nerd-revenge triumph. But also shame. Shame that I never wrote on that group

Shame that I never defended the girl with the intense raven eyes

— the girl whose brave flyers were stomped on, probably somewhere near my dorm. But again, I soon forgot about that revelation and that feeling. Feelings. They’re so fleeting. Even more so, revelations. We need to constantly re-discover them every damn day. Like last week, when I woke up to this meme. I saw the muddy sole eclipsing her name. The eye-rolls. The cowardly virtual-giggles. The “Who does she think she is?”

I’ve got a lot of feelings, but the easiest one to articulate: gratitude

Stefani, thank you. Thank you for always thinking you’re a superstar, for using your cracks to let the light come out more brightly. Humans, let’s follow suit.”

Lady Gaga’s college experience wasn’t the first time she experienced severe bullying. Her parents enrolled her at Convent of Sacred Heart, an Upper East Side Catholic private school, where she got her first taste of how cruel kids could be. From then on it didn’t stop.

“I used to do these really big Evita brows,” Gaga told Rolling Stone in 2011. “I used to self-tan, and I had this really intense tan in school, and people would say, ‘Why the fuck are you so orange, why do you do your hair that way, are you a dyke? Why do you have to look like that for school?’ I used to be called a slut, be called this, be called that. I didn’t even want to go to school sometimes.”

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and despite her naysayers, she has always had an insurmountable drive. At 11, she began voice lessons with Don Lawrence, Christina Aguilera’s singing coach, who she continued with even as her career took off. In addition to singing, she learned how to play classical piano and took acting classes – both skills that would lead to her pivotal Oscar moment.

Focused on her music career, she enrolled at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, but always the risk-taker, Gaga dropped out not long eager to start her real-world musician experience. “I left my entire family, got the cheapest apartment I could find and ate shit until somebody would listen,” she told New York Magazine.

Known for her more audacious looks in her early career, with giant sunglasses and meat dresses, her music foundation carried through into her pop music. “I was classically trained as a pianist, and that innately teaches you how to write a pop song,” Gaga told the Telegraph. “Because when you learn Bach inversions, it has the same sort of modulations between the chords. It’s all about tension and release.”

At 19-years-old the star thought maybe she had found her big break when Def Jam records signed her, but it wasn’t to be. Three months into the deal, the label informed her that she just wasn’t for them. As usual, she remained determined. In 2008 Gaga’s boyfriend, Rob Fusari brought Gaga to Interscope records not as a singer but as a songwriter, and from there – a star was born. She wrote hits for major artists such as Fergie, the Pussycat Dolls, and even Britney Spears. While at the label, Gaga recorded a reference vocal for one of her songs; the stars aligned, and Akon heard the demo and signed her.

Through let-downs, bullies, and rejections Gaga has become a renowned singer and actress. She has been nominated for 24 Grammys and won nine of them. In 2018 she made her grand acting debut in A Star Is Born and won an Oscar for her billboard topping hit and soundtrack song ‘Shallow.’

In her Oscars acceptance speech, she had some inspirational words for all the struggling artists out there that identify with her:  “If you are at home, and you’re sitting on your couch, and you’re watching this right now, all I have to say is that this is hard work. I’ve worked hard for a long time, and it’s not about, you know…it’s not about winning. But what it’s about is not giving up. If you have a dream, fight for it. There’s a discipline for passion. And it’s not about how many times you get rejected, or you fall, or you’re beaten up. It’s about how many times you stand up and are brave, and you keep on going.”

The sooner all of us realize that people who exist only to hurt, and bully are usually unhappy with their own lives. They put others down to try and raise themselves up, yet are to scared to admit their own shortcomings. My guess is that the creators of this, group were to scared to chase their own dreams. Lady Gaga does not have the last laugh, because there was never any thing to prove to these people.

That's actually not true. We like to tell ourselves that, but someone did a study seven or eight years ago and found exactly the opposite. Bullies ARE happy with their lives. For all of those that acted out as kids because of bad things at home, there are ten who really do just enjoy putting people down AND they really do think they are "better" and should have the right do do it. ...///... I had to read the article twice, and then thought about the bullies that I knew (and avoided like poison) in school...and I had to admit they're right. These were privileged kids who were given everything they ever asked for and their idea of fun was to let everyone else know it.

Ms. Germanotta is super talented. Good for her, sticking with it and going for her dreams. Not all of us manage to do that: we stop along the way and try to balance survival and ... comfort.

This is not the first time I'm reading about an artist that has been bullied. It seems many of the artists have been bullied and had jealous people against them. I too had jealous people and have always been bullied my whole life, even now that I'm an adult, it seems I attract bullies, even within the family. I wish I had a special talent or an unusual idea, maybe my success would have taught everyone a lesson.

When people hate, for no apparent reason? They are usually jealous or envious, because they DO, see in you what you see. But it just kills them and why? Because they know, you will make it one day, that you have the drive and the passion for the hard work to succeed, and they simply don’t. They just have a desire. So as they hate you, they have a need and a mischanneled passion to kick you and beat you down, so you don’t make it, and they are ok with this. That is why you get back up and keep going. Because, you, have what it takes, to win and be famous for your talent, and the work ethic to do it. Haters don’t. They are too busy hating. Funny how hate and passion are two sides of the same coin. Yay, for Lady GaGa!

What kind if despicable creature makes a whole Facebook Group like that?? Don't people have lives to live? Why the F*ck does anybdoy care what someone else tries to achieve with their own lives?? Jeez, what a depressing post. (not a critic of the author, it's good that this is shown). I remeber people going on and on and on about Lady Gaga nad her looks. It seems almost impossible for society in general to let an unusual and talented woman rise up among us. It was just as bad with Amy Winehouse.

I love Lady Gaga's music. However, her personality seems questionable sometimes. What was she like in college? How many bridges did she burn, that she could care less about? She had to have upset many people for them to create a page such as this. Yes, it's still bullying. It's conflict that did not need to be social. There has to be a back story that none of us are aware of. We've all heard of the awesome stars, that are terrible people.

Sometimes people hate what they do not understand. She might have been interpreted as attention grabber for how she carried herself not understanding that she is just expressing individuality. She reminds me of my son’s kindergarten classmate. After class almost everyday, she would be wearing a paper crown she made, beads and trinkets, and she would sometimes end up in silly but amusing situations because of her curiosity. I have never met a kid as creative and as curious like her. She grabs attention without even trying. I am hoping that nobody would dim that little girl’s spark because of jealousy.

2 things. 1) this is a fake story. The group was set up only a few years ago. 2) Even if it was true, there were only 12 people in it. It's hardly as if her whole year was against her.

Hold on. Lady Gaga is older than me, and Facebook wasn't known to the public when I started college at 18, and I waited two years before I enrolled after leaving high school (England). So either I misread something, or those people who created that group had really early access to Facebook.

The very first time I saw Lady Gaga (and I am at least 2 generations before her fan base) I just thought she was something special. She had a real presence. The more I saw and heard of her, the better I liked her. She is the real deal. That kind of talent almost always wins: 4 boys from Liverpool, a country boy from Tuepelo, an Armenian girl who hated her nose...so many unlikely superstars. Keep shining Stefani.

I know this dynamic well. My daughter had the misfortune to be in middle school when Facebook first became popular and it was used like a public weapon against her. Two false profiles were set up exactly along these lines, only a lot meaner, and she was younger. People didn't understand 'back then' how hard it would be on a 13 year old to have your face photoshopped onto a nude torso with mocking comments and lots of 'likes' (more than 12), including a comment about killing her. No one, not the school, nor the police, understood. I kept saying, it's got to be against the law to use a photo of a minor like this. The police said that Facebook was very hard to deal with and uncooperative in these situations. They would only investigate if we promised to press charges. And my daughter, who knew who was doing it, said no because she knew it would only make things worse for her. There was no way to resolve online bullying back then, and the younger you were, the more vulnerable.

I have such respect for this lady Gaga/Stefani I've loved her since the meat dress, which I hated. I had heard or read somewhere that one of her teachers said that she was so bright. She is simply put "amazing" in my opinion! Also I also read that she has Fibromyalgia and she keeps going. My love and support goes out to her double for this truth. Congratulations. I know you have been inspiration for countless young people who are struggling tight now! You are a beautiful lady inside and out. God bless and keep you always.

I am so sorry Stephanie (Lady Gaga) had to go through this hell. I wish I had been there to support her. I was bullied in Jr. High and a bit in High school too. It sucked. However, my bullies did noting with their lives really and a few of them have died. I left that state when I was 18, moved to NYC and never looked back. I became a professional travel photographer who has been to over 40 countries worldwide. They did nothing with their lives other than drugs. Bullies are sad and pathetic individuals who only know how to belittle people in order to make themselves feel worthy. What breaks my heart are all the lost lonely kids who kill or hurt themselves due to the HELL of constant daily bulling at school. More must be done to help them. Gaga was lucky -- she was strong, determined, and talented. Not all of them are. They need our help and support!

You know what? The fact that those twelve people were in that fb group... that someone made it, and 11 more joined... says they were more interested in her than they would be willing to admit. It means they were thinking about her, even if it was bad thoughts.

I'll be honest, I never really liked Gaga's music or her media attention grabbing antics, but this story has earned my admiration for her courage and determination, to stand up and not give up on her dreams in spite of the hate she must've been targeted with again and again. Good woman. As for the bullies, I'll say this much, bullying is inexcusable at any age and if parents, family, teachers don't or can't convince you to stop, then you are a sadist, you take pleasure in inflicting pain and watching your victim cower and squirm. Bullies are emotional criminals in my book and turning a blind eye or hoping it goes away without intervention is wrong and harmful. I hope that all of us witnessing bullying or harassment will address it whenever we can.

Almost every celebrity has been dissed in their early lives/careers. But when those haters realize how stupid it was to do so when they see that person rise and become famous is when they realize that they should stop being mean and hating on that celeb, because, what the haters did will resurface, and then the people who hated that celeb will become hated.

You just go ahead and give me all the dislikes you want. Doesn't change the fact that when Lady Gaga went to NYU in 2003-2005, facebook wasn't even open to everyone and had less than a million members. The option of creating groups like this "You'll never be famous" group, first got launched in 2010. And in 2010 Lady Gaga was doing the Monster Ball Tour. Grossing $227 million, and becoming the highest-grossing concert tour for a debut headlining artist. So at the ealiest these people could have allegedly created this group. Lady Gaga already was a world renowned superstar...

The world has plenty of real bullies. Maybe you should do the world a favor & support people instead of trashing them. Destruction is the easiest thing to do. Building is much harder. Fortunately, that's why most destructive people are stupid.

The more I saw and heard of her, the better I liked her. She is the real deal.

That group was just mean and used social media to bully her. Luckily Lady Gaga kept her dream alive and shares it the rest of us. Thank you LG. You are amazing.

Haters are losers, big time. Feel sorry for them but wish and hope they get help and change for the better.

Why do women blame the patriarchy when women do this to their women?

I think it’s probably true to say, nobody who was in the in crowd at school ever became famous.

Apparently this group was created after she was already famous and it’s just another ploy by Gaga to spew her perpetual victim narrative

I actually believe this because it just sounds a little too fake to be real. And all these comments about it being made in 2016 just makes it really irritating to read comments about how awesome she is and her "overcoming" story.

'Muricans love to make other "look weak", it's from their culture. Well, when the bullied doesn't shoot at schools, they shoot at the stars....

She is very talented, but that name she uses is just silly. She should start using her real name otherwise she might wind up like Kid Rock.

Where did Prince and Madonna wind up? Freddie Mercury, Elton John, Marilyn Monroe, Queen Latifah - etc - etc. Not to mention Count Basey and Duke Ellington

I think it's important to have online bullying. It makes kids face the fact that the weld is real

The world has plenty of real bullies. Maybe you should do the world a favor & support people instead of trashing them. Destruction is the easiest thing to do. Building is much harder. Fortunately, that's why most destructive people are stupid.
