Pixar Makes People Cry By Presenting ‘Kitbull’, A Short Film About A Friendship Of Abused Pitbull And Stray Kitten
Just two weeks prior, Bored Panda wrote about Pixar’s newest short animation ‘Purl’. Well, the famous animation studio is treating us again with another short film – this time, it’s guaranteed to leave you weeping as it’s a story about one unlikely friendship between an abused pit bull and a stray kitten. Kittbull – a production of Pixar’s new SparkShorts program – was directed by Rosana Sullivan and produced by Kathryn Hendrickson and tells a heartwarming story of a rare kinship formed under the saddest circumstances. Get your tissues ready and scroll down below to watch the full animation.
“To be fully honest, it started from a cat video,” – Rosie laughs. “I love watching cat videos in times of stress. And I thought, you know what, I just want to draw a little kitten doing something silly and very very cat-like. At first, I just wanted to draw something that made me feel good and was fun, but it evolved into something more personal to me, eventually, I realized that growing up I was always very sensitive and very shy. And had actually a lot trouble making connections, making friendships. So I related to this kitten because it never really stepped out of its comfort zone to be vulnerable and make a connection. So that’s eventually what the story became,” the director of the short animation recalls.
The story starts off with a stray, big-eyed kitten wandering around a neighborhood to find a refuge in a cardboard box, in a back alley. He meets a pit bull there,
which suffers from abuse from the hands of his stony-hearted owner. In many ways, it seems as if the animation short is trying to showcase the stereotypes that the pit bulls are facing and is trying to break them, showing that these dogs have good hearts, unlike many of their owners.
In the beginning of the animation, the stray black kitten shies away from the dog and shows fear. However, the animation later shows off the bigheartedness of the dog, who saves the cat which was stuck.
The short itself is beautifully drawn, and some of the people who commented below the video, even thought that it reminds them of the Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away. The producer of the animation, Kathryn Hendrickson, noted herself that the animation was drawn in 2D which is “different from what Pixar normally does.”

Share on FacebookI actually cried. I don’t do that often. Right now I just want to hug and kiss a pitbull. It’s no pitbull around so I kiss my spoiled shiba Inu insted. The movie was so god! It was so beatifully made.
I cried as well! I'm so glad the squidgies got a lovely home though

Awwwwwww they both look so cute! Thanks for sharing this lovely phot 🙂
Load More Replies...This is so wonderful that they portrayed the pit bull this way! They are so sweet and kind. I have 3, I should know! ❤🐾
I've been around many dogs and was alpha to a dog I loved. I've never had a problem with them because I don't try to treat them as people in fur coats. We got an abused pit bull to rehabilitate and she is ALL that anyone could ever ask for or want from a dog. Confirms my suspicion that we get as much garbage about dogs as we get about politics.
Load More Replies...One can see how much Studio Ghibli has inspired the head of Pixar studios. The silouette of these two cuties is *so* similar to the Fly and the Mouse at the end of Spirited Away. Looking adorable both pairs! Peace from West to East! Yeah Yeah!
I cannot believe this touched on friendship, animal abuse, pollution, and discrimination all in one short.
It also shows that stray cats just need a friend in order to open up and stop being scared of everyone. I’ve seen so many strays who were aggressive become little love muffins when someone took the time to show them some kindness. I turned a few stray cats into adoptable pets and it’s so heartwarming to see them go from untrusting and scared to opening up and feeling comfortable enough to love.
That’s how my rescue was. Got her 14 years ago (she was about a year old), but had to euthanize her last month bc her kidneys were failing and the vet couldn’t do anything for her... she gave us the BEST 14 years. She’s missed tremendously. *RIP my sweet little girl* ♥️😔🐈

Why am I crying so hard? I love this so much, makes me want to hug my pitbull forever
Such a beautiful story. The way the kitten and pit bull were animated is adorable. If I weren’t stuck in a hospital bed right now, I’d go and hug my pup.
I WANT A PITBULL! BUT WHY DO THEY HAVE TO BE ILLEGAL IN UK?!?!?! THEY'RE NOT THE SPAWN OF THE DEVIL! THEY GET CUTE FRIENDLY GIANTS THAT I NEED TO GIVE ALL MY LOVE AND ATTENTION TO!!! SHOULD THAT BE A CRIME?!?!?
If you can show the Pitbull is not aggressive they can give you a certificate of exemption, my friend has one and she has it legally because it was shown to be a lovely dog with no aggression, and it is so lovely, a real soppy boy.
Load More Replies...I. am. so. happy that they made a heartwarming story about a pit bull and made it realistic about how humans create the aggressiveness in an otherwise pure-souled dog ! As a 30+ year rescuer of abused and neglected pit bull and pit bull mixes, I have spent countless hours and much heartbreak advocating for these wonderful dogs. Even the ones that had been abused by humans were quick to forgive, trust, and live with other dogs and cats that I had in complete harmony. This brings me new hope.
We have a lab/pit mix, and I can see so much of her behavior in this. There's a reason they were once called nursemaid dogs--I can't imagine her hurting anyone. The only person she's injured is me--we live in the country and don't have a fenced-in yard, so I take her out on a lease. She saw a rabbit in the back yard and nearly tore my arm off--the rabbit bolted north, and the "big vicious pit bull" bolted the other direction to get away from that mean old rabbit!
Hence the kitty home box at the start says "fragile". It's a very carefully placed detail.
Pixar is like that with their animation. Details placed careful for the view to see.

I loved this! We have a pitbull puppy and she is the sweetest, most adorable puppy ever!
i legit sobbed for 10 straight minutes after watching this, and i can barely think about it without bawling. i love pit bulls so much, and my cat looks just like the kitten. WIN_201902...3bd188.jpg
Me too. But we just had to euthanize our cat of 14 years. Her kidneys were failing and the vet couldn’t do anything for her. She was such a sweet loving cat that get us the BEST 14 years. *RIP MY SWEET LITTLE GIRL* ♥️🐈😔
Load More Replies...I am all about making the "Funny" comments and puns in here, but in this case I will only say: You made me cry, thank you :)
Does anybody know why are my eyes watery after watching this shortfilm?
My nephew has a Big pitbull dog looks scary as heck when he runs at you but he thinks he is a lap dog and will lick you to death if you let him...
Love love love!! If only we treated all animals like they treat us, with love.
I loved this so much and the ending was really sweet. Saw this a week ago on YouTube.
THOSE PEOPLE! WHO GAVE THEM THE RIGHT TO BEAT AND ABUSE A INNOCENT PITBULL!? DID YOU SEE THAT DOG!? IT WAS SO CUTE AND YOU ALMOST DESTORYED ITS INNOCENCE! AND YOU KNOW WHAT? I HOPE THAT THAT DOG TOOK THOSE GOOD PEOPLE TO YOU AND THEY ARRESTED YOU BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO RIGHT! NONE! TO ABUSE AN INNOCENT ANIMAL!!!!!!!!! I AM TRIGGERED!!!!!!! DID YOU SEE HOW HAPPY HE WAS!? AND HE DID EVERYTHING YOU TOLD HIM TO AND YOU STILL HAD TO BEAT THE DOG!!???!??? I AM OH! I AM STEAMING WITH RAGE!!!! YOUR LUCKY YOUR NOT AN ACTUAL PERSON OR I SWEAR! I KNOW THERE ARE PEOPLE LIKE YOU OUT IN THIS WORLD AND YOU ALL MAKE ME SICK!
They didn't beat the dog, they were FIGHTING THE DOG. Did no one pick up on that? The dog was being trained to fight and when he lost, the owner tossed him into the backyard. I live in Houston, Texas and dog fighting is a BIG problem in the south :(
Load More Replies...As a pitbull rescuer, this just warms my heart. These dogs love cats, and are the most loving, loyal and appreciative breeds. I have owned many different breeds, before rescuing Pitbulls. It is this breed of dog that has fully captured my heart I am so grateful Pixar has shown this side of them. They don't deserve the bad media/press they have received, it is biased and full of ignorance. Thank you Pixar, for educating people through this sweet short film, and showing the real loving side of this breed.
I watched this last night with my family. I felt so sad for the scared kitten and the abused pit bull, and I'm so glad they got their happy ending.
I recently got my first Pittie. He's such an easy pup, good boy, big dork and I love him! Was wanting a blue female, got a chocolate male, he's the one that needed me most!
All teared up... and our cats have done a runner, they don't want to be cuddled to death at the moment.
Dangit! *sniff* Where are those OCN (onion cutting ninjas)?!? Seriously, this just tugged at the old heart strings. I love all kinds of dogs, especially the big working group ones (pitties, boxers, dobermans, etc). And that scruffy kitten is pretty cute too. Anyone else wanna find that cartoon jack-wagon and teach him a lesson with me!?
Beautiful yet so heart-breaking~~ God-Bless the beasts and the children.... <3
I probably shouldn’t comment on something I haven’t watched but I rarely if ever open anything that promises to make me cry especially involving animals that are abused. There is enough to cry about in this world without seeking new opportunities
