This KFC proposal went viral as the perfect example of true love not caring about fancy or luxurious settings. When you really love someone, it doesn’t matter where they take you to eat, what salary they earn, or what kind of education they have. Love is above all tangible things, assets, and extra zeros in the bank account.

Hector Mkansi proposed to Nonhlanhla Soldaat at a KFC chain restaurant in South Africa. For most, it was a heartwarming moment worth capturing on video (we’re glad they did). But a journalist saw an opportunity in the “KFC proposal couple” to drag the man down for being ‘broke.’ Well, the joke’s on this person who tried to roast the man in love because the internet came together to support their love story, and big brands ensured them the wedding of their dreams. This is the beautiful story of the KFC couple.

This is the heartwarming moment of the happy KFC couple grinning from ear to ear to onlookers taking photos and videos. Well, this couple was already married in 2012. Still, Hector wanted to surprise his wife again with a new, creative proposal at her favorite restaurant. Little did they know, their second wedding would be far from the first one. Known as the “KFC wedding,” it was fully funded by international brands. The couple tied the knot in December 2019, and nowadays, they are happily married with three children.

Butterfly_anele’s bad tweet actually helped the KFC couple become incredibly popular. This is one of those few situations where an unpleasant approach brings many good consequences. The journalist met with people’s anger online as no one seemed to agree with her.

KFC South Africa Asked the Public to Find the Couple

“Please help us find this beautiful couple, [we want to be blessers]. DM us any leads, there might be a Finger Lickin’ Good surprise in it for you too. [Vaal people, help us]! We love love,” KFC South Africa wrote in their tweet.

Numerous International Brands Showered The Couple With Gifts

Global brands such as PUMA, Huawei, McDonald’s, Uber, and Audi offered support. PUMA gave an R10,000 (approximately $680) voucher and Huawei two of their phones. The Standard Bank topped them all by allowing the couple to clear their loans up to R300,000 (over $20,000!).

The couple were also gifted groceries worth more than $1,300. From food to even the wedding rings—the people on the internet jumped on taking care of everything they could provide. Numerous people from various businesses have stepped in, offering their services and goods for free. Including wedding rings, cakes, dresses, transport, groceries, and SPA treatments. And probably all the other things that you can imagine.

“A bucket full of love for Mkansi’s favorite couple in true SA style, umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu,** thank you to each and everyone of you South’A. Our bucket overflows with love,” they wrote on their Twitter page.

The Couple is Still Together Happily Married

For the Mkansi couple, their second wedding was a dream come true. Online fans and organizations supported the couple, turning their initial struggle into a heartwarming journey of love and generosity. This experience was a profound lesson about our presence in social media. As we can all see from the Butterfly Anele apology, jokes might backfire, and you can face thousands of tweets against you. A negative comment might spark a sad fight or a wildfire of positivity. In this case, it took a positive turn by making a dream come true with a funded KFC wedding package. This story emphasizes the importance of letting go of perfection and finding beauty in simple, imperfect moments in life.

I wouldn't care if my boyfriend proposed to me in a Walmart. The location doesn't matter, the love behind the proposal does. Some people pick the most petty things to be upset about.

Agreed. Look at the man, and look at the woman. Such love and joy. The surroundings don't matter.

Why is someone else commenting on a couple's private moment to begin with? Who cares where he proposes? It only matters why. He loves this woman and wants to spend his life with her. Enough said.

Totally don't understand the hateful comment. The couple looked so happy. Maybe KFC was their first date. Maybe it's their go to fastfood place. Maybe they met there. Frankly it doesn't matter. To take someone else's happy & special moment and try to turn it ugly because you don't approve of the restaurant choice says a whole lot more about the person making the comment.

Totally agree. And maybe the journalist is right and he can't afford better — and so what? She tried to take a moment of obvious joy and turn it into shame. FFS, what's wrong with people?

This journalist would probably die to know that my husband never actually proposed and it basically went like this: "Do you wanna get married in November?" "Okay." "What day?" "I don't care, how about Sunday?" "Ok, let me call Mom." We had an awesome wedding for under $500. True love doesn't have a dollar sign on it.

My parents got married because my mum started a new job in two months and they could get married persons quarters with it. The 'proposal' was apparently my father saying, "well I suppose it makes sense, doesn't it?" They've been married 50 years and going strong to this day.

I can't fathom why somebody would drag someone else for the location in which they choose to propose. Maybe that KFC had special significance to them. Maybe that's where he took her for their first date? Maybe the two of them met there. Who cares? If you're truly in love with one another, the location isn't important; The fact that they're obviously both so happy is.

KFC is hellishly expensive in some countries. Its like high end fine dining prices where people need to dress up poshly to even enter. I would kill to get proposed in KFC. Here KFC prices are skyrocketing due to exchange rate gaps. What r******d fun was this journalist having over an innocent pair of swans???

Means KFC is their favorite food? Or maybe it's where they met? Who knows why he chose that place but even if it's a budgetary issue it's not something to be ashamed of. What it wrong with people?

There's no hard rule on where or how to propose. I didn't care for a romantic approach, so my husband couched marriage as a practical concern. A woman told me that she proposed to her boyfriend over supper at home (he accepted). It looks like this man knew his girlfriend well enough to propose in a chain restaurant. If someone else prefers a candlelit dinner, that's okay, too.

How dare that so called journalist put down this proposal. Real journalists report the news. She's barely a blogger. This KFC could have some personal meaning, but even if it doesn't it's not about her opinion. Amazing responses.

wouldn't it be awesome, if the reason for the location of the proposal was because they'd had a crush on eachother all through primary & middle school, and the first date they went on was at the local KFC, because it was the fanciest place he could afford, after working for minimum wage at age 14, and because the 14yr old girl said it was her favourite take-out. The fact that she was impressed by his efforts, made him realise that she was the one for him - so as a grown man, he recreated that first date, when he knew she was the one, and proposed. <3 (ie, you never know the meaning of something to those involved). I wish them all the happiness in the life they build together. :D

My husband proposed to me with a marble ring, sitting on a couch. Broke did not even begin to describe his money situation. We have been married for almost 40 years (90% happy). It is the riches of your heart and love that count. if I had to choose between the Love we have and having no money worries, I would STILL pick the LOVE.

Not all women are materialistic. I am holding a torch for a man with SPMS who went through an ugly divorce and is broke. His mind and personality is so beautiful that I am amazed he still has a very positive outlook in life after all the emotional and financial abuse he went through (he was a proprietor of an IT company). If only he knew how much I love him deeply.

Good for them! I can't stand when people comment about a couple (or the person proposing) not spending enough on the rings, ceremony ect. I'm not sure about you all but people spend a TON of money on weddings and some of us simply cannot afford to do so. This couple looks genuinely happy in the moment and THAT my friends is what truly matters.

Well, I never even got a proper proposal, more like a practical "well, it would make things easier if we are married, when do we do it?" sort of thing. KFC would be unlikel as they are not common in Sweden but I would have been glad for a proposal at any fast food chain 🙂

My husband and I did the same thing. We kind of looked at each other and said "You want to get married?" (Shrugs shoulders) "Sure." It wasn't a big dramatic proposal at a KFC or any other establishment. It was like asking him "You want to go see a movie?" (Shrugs shoulders) "Okay." LOL

Overall generally anyone strictly looking at places, and outfits is a piece of s**t. More so women when they do this then men. Expectations and discrimination for men is hard enough. Also the matter of courage to propose among other things. Not everyone is in a good place or even if they are they might not have money for various reason past income. This could be their favorite spot and best they can come by but even that is f*****g stupid as it's all recent b******t. Place don't matter and neither should the disgusting overpriced scams of rock with intentionally inflated price. Those should have no place with love but highly successful marketing says otherwise. Overall how one gets married is damned irrelevant like prom. It's what you do while married and living with your partner that counts

Why do some women make it all about the money? What would you rather have.. man that will buy you everything a queen desires, but then steps out on you, beats you or treats you like his property to be disposed of at his choosing? Or a man that is dirt poor, treats you like a queen, loves you, supports you in good times and bad, would never lay a hand on you and would lay down his life to protect you? Sorry ladies...I'd rather be poor and happy than rich and miserable.

It's real. Companies jump on these viral heartwarming moments so that they get some free advertising. The amount of money they give the couple is nothing compared to the reaction of John Q. Public who will now bank there (shop there, eat there, whatever) because that company is now seen as "good" and "customer friendly." Plus, whatever loss they take can be used as a tax write off in a way that advertising budgets can't. It's a win win for the company. I'm not saying it was wrong for them to do it, just pointing out that it isn't out of the goodness of their cold corporate hearts. The 30K being such an odd number makes me think they were about 30K over the previous tax bracket and this will knock them back down again, making them pay a lower percentage in taxes, another win for the company.

In a lot of other countries, KFC is special occasion food. I remember when I lived in overseas , people living in the countryside went to McDonald's for their special occasions, and they would have to travel many miles to get there (it's complicated when you don't own a car and bus service is sketchy at best) This might have been an anniversary or birthday dinner. Regardless it was a very special occasion and wish the beautiful couple all the happiness in the world.

Also she keeps her twitters private, so what a journalist she is? She can't even say she was in the same restaurant, the picture is made from outside - funny coincidence that a twitter star (and I guess there aren't many in SA) fist exactly a window of opportunity of maybe 10 seconds! Check id she studied in Stellenbosch, cause in this case she is even less coincidental - like ss less.

I bet that OP on Twitter is single or her boyfriend hasn't proposed because she's expecting a grand proposal. I hope her life isn't miserable as she ridicules a great display of affection by such proposal. I don't really care if my boyfriend proposes to me while we're washing the dishes or drinking coffee with our bed hair at home. What matters is the sincerity and love he's offering to you. Forgive me for suspecting this as a smart way of promoting their business but I am definitely thankful that businesses like these are truly happy to be a part of a happy event. OP must have looked so bamboozled after seeing all the responses.

I was proposed to on the side on the road in front of a broken down car. We were on a road trip, the car blew up, he was mad, I made him laugh, he stopped laughing and blurted out, "Marry Me. Please." Then climbed in the car and got a ring out of the glove box that he was saving for the "perfect romantic moment" on our trip. I guess that was it. I said yes. It doesn't have to be fancy or expensive. It has to be about love.

What a sad world we live and love in. You get ridiculed by a wanna be journalist for proposing at a fast food joint then because of a social media outrage and a blast of interest all other stupid brands jump at the opportunity to make themselves look socially responsible and take a piece out of that pie... you (the lovers) are just being used and nothing else. I'd say take nothing and keep your dignity. You are not a charity case and there is nothing wrong with a kfc proposal!

Esley

I can keep my dignity at a spa that was gifted to me. I can keep my dignity with 30K of my personal loans being paid off. I can keep my dignity with a chef donating their time to cook me a meal. All gifts I didn't seek out. My entire wedding was gifted to me by assorted individuals and companies that were tangentially connected to either my husband's family or mine (my dad's boss - a caterer - provided the food; my husband's best friend's company provided the photography, etc). In the end, my husband and I paid $500 for table and chair rental and $25 for the licence - even the presiding clergy was a gift. I've been married just shy of 21 years, have 2 grown children, and would marry my husband again tomorrow if he wanted. Still have plenty of dignity.

I think this is very sweet but I wonder how many people there are in this couple's situation that have gotten no help from these companies. I wonder how many are their own employees. I didn't see any of that in this particular story, I don't know why anyone screams about bad government policies on a proposal story... Are they government officials or are they everyday people that can't do anything about all that stuff you mentioned? Did they tell the country they would feed them and raise a tax so they could be fed and then didn't do it? Again I got none of that from this story .

If someone else prefers a candlelit dinner, that's okay, too.

wouldn't it be awesome, if the reason for the location of the proposal was because they'd had a crush on eachother all through primary & middle school, and the first date they went on was at the local KFC, because it was the fanciest place he could afford, after working for minimum wage at age 14, and because the 14yr old girl said it was her favourite take-out. The fact that she was impressed by his efforts, made him realise that she was the one for him - so as a grown man, he recreated that first date, when he knew she was the one, and proposed. <3 (ie, you never know the meaning of something to those involved). I wish them all the happiness in the life they build together. :D

P.S. they are a really sweet couple - clearly in love, and getting married on NYE this year! KFC managed to find them, and have passed on all the offers to help, & gifts to the couple. If you want to see more, this is the link to the thread at KFC. https://twitter.com/KFCSA/status/1192359716955009024

I'm confused why this lady is being labeled a journalist. There is nothing in her tweet to indicate that she is a journalist nor any mention in this post of what company she is affiliated with. Is she actually a journalist or some random person tweeting her unsolicited opinion?

This reminds me of that kid who caught a ball at a baseball game, and a grown woman came and took it from him. The team invited him to spend a whole day with them, and gave him a ball (or a T-shirt) with their autographs.

Esley

She's gonna get wifed up, meanwhile the chick ridiculing him is probably nowhere near having a hubby.

so basically just another marketing opportunity the big brands (and small fish) fully embraced. disgraceful. at least the couple got loads of free stuff...surely not what they were looking for, but still, if it´s free, i´ll take it. (or maybe they were in cahoots with the journalist and staged this whole setup to get the free stuff...oh, sweet love)

I'll agree with you on the companies' motivations, but I'm not so jaded (yet) to believe the couple were in on it with the "journalist."

Journalists are parasites of this world, they will go out of their way to screw with anybody just to dig up something to talk about. Maybe the individual talking s**t about this couple needs to just f**k off?

I think this is very sweet but I wonder how many people there are in this couple's situation that have gotten no help from these companies. I wonder how many are their own employees. I honestly am glad that they fought hate with kindness, but if the only time they show this level of kindness is when someone poor goes viral then they are hypocrites.

Misleading headline - The lady who shamed the couple was just some woman. BP why would you create air of hostility for journalists? And you posted that Chinese surveillence camera article like it was just some cool tech? Poor form - are you working iwth the Russians now too? Not cool.

Well, what I find ridiculous, regardless whether in KFC or in fancy restaurant, is the Americans' need to make private events public. Why is that?

I won't comment on "American's" needs here, but I will speculate that for this SOUTH AFRICAN couple, KFC was somehow important to their relationship.

Who does propose in KFC ? It depends on the amount of the check KFC has promised.

Why all the hate? She has a right to an opinion, she got them a bunch of free stuff and her tweet is less vicious than many of the comments here. Buy some self awareness, folks.

That’s a lot of donations for a relationship that won’t last more than a couple years. Not because of the KFC. Just because, statistics, lol

Fck, so desperate you are? In this case we eagerly wait you to ask for a national tax raise of at least 5% - you know, groceries for the whole country, including those so poor they can't even afford to enter a KFC or those who never saw one!

Hope you work it all out and project your anger in the right place someday
