We all want what’s best for our children. We show them love and teach them life lessons in hopes that they will grow up to be empathetic, independent, intelligent humans. But they’re bound to make some mistakes along the way, especially during their teenage years. We’ve all been through it, and as hard as these mistakes can be to accept, it’s best to confront them head on rather than bury our heads in the sand.

One gas station employee recently shared a story on the Entitled Parents subreddit detailing their encounter with a difficult mother at work. Below, you’ll find the whole story of the Karen who refused to believe her son could do any wrong, as well as some of the replies readers have left. Feel free to share your thoughts on this situation in the comments below, and let us know if you’ve ever had to deal with customers stealing at work. Then, if you’re interested in checking out another Bored Panda article calling out an entitled mother, look no further than right here

After catching two teenagers stealing, this gas station employee then had to deal with one of their incredibly entitled mothers

For some reason, the teens were bold enough to show their faces in the gas station again

Despite being against the law, stealing seems to be a quite common experience for teenagers to have. According to WebMD, teens account for 25% of shoplifters arrested in the United States, and 89% of kids say that they know other kids who shoplift. When it comes to why they do it though, the answer is not always clear. Teens do commonly experiment with high risk behaviors, such as drinking and smoking, so perhaps it’s just for the rush of knowing they’re doing something “bad”.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Anthony E. Wolf hypothesizes that it’s due to a combination of poor impulse control and adolescent vulnerability. “Teenagers new to a sense of their own autonomy want to show to themselves that they can do bad and naughty things. It gives them a sense of power and excitement,” he says. Teens also may be stealing to seem cool amongst their peers or steal something after being dared by a friend. “The effect of the group is powerful in this age group. They’ll goad each other into it.”

When it comes to deterring teens from stealing again, most businesses will take an apology and will agree not to press charges so long as it never happens again. But in the United States, there is a juvenile justice system that can handle providing punishments to teens as well. Nancy Gannon, the executive deputy director of the Coalition for Juvenile Justice, told WebMD that most times, for first time offenders, cases involving teens shoplifting are sent to teen courts, where teen volunteers decide the punishment of their peers.

“One major principle of juvenile courts is to give children who’ve made a mistake a second chance,” Gannon says. Parents can also help by ensuring that their teen understands the consequences of their actions and that if it happens again, their parents may not be able to protect them. It is out of the control of their family if they continue to break the law. Often, understanding this is enough to stop a teen from becoming a repeat offender.

Although stealing is wrong, it is understandable that teenagers are at a formative age, and they’re likely to make mistakes. When they do, however, they should be encouraged to learn from their mistakes. The mother in this story did not seem to view that as a priority for her son. As a full grown adult woman, there is no excuse for defending your child after seeing video evidence that they broke the law. It is hard to accept that our loved ones are not perfect, but if a mistake like this is brushed under the rug, it sends a message that it’s no big deal. If he received no punishment and his mother is in denial about the fact that he stole anything, why would this teen be deterred from stealing again?

We would love to hear your thoughts on this situation. Have you ever had to deal with a Karen like this at work? Feel free to share in the comments below, and then if you’re interested in checking out another Bored Panda article featuring an obnoxious Karen, look no further than right here

Readers have applauded the employee, noting that the mother should probably be banned as well

I would have a word with the school. I’m sure the principal will be happy to deal out some life lessons about theft. Especially as they were wearing school sports uniforms at the time.

We're obviously dealing with real geniuses here. I mean who goes into a store to steal while wearing their school clothes which has their names on them? They just had the biggest target on them. Give those kids an award for being stupid! Also, give one to the mom also for being Karen of the year.

I’m really sad and disappointed people are still using the name Karen to describe such vile behavior. My name is actually Karen and I don’t want to be grouped in with these bottom feeders.

My name is Donald. . . Forever more the most notorious Donald will be a lying orange gas bag of a rapist who somehow managed to screw the US and the world for 4 years and still has a merry band of red eyed, frothing conspiracy nut jobs with their tongues firmly planted on his A**s. We all have crosses to bear. Every Karen in MY life is delightful for what it's worth.

Years ago I found out my son got banne from a gas station for stealing. Hauled his a*s in there, apologized, paid for the stolen items, forced him to apologize, told him if he ever went back he would have to deal with me, then used him as cheap labor until he paid me off. I "payed" him according to his education and experience. He was 11. It took a long time for him to pay me back. Has never stolen again. Why exactly would you not use an opportunity like this to make your child a better person.

I love how how "Calling corporate" is always the Karen's last stance. As if it's going to send a cold shudder of fear down retail workers' spines. Sure calling corporate might actually get you something for free, but unless someone higher up has it out for the employee, the employee is not going to be fired, presuming they followed every policy by the book.

None of those are things you can sue for. You can call the police for stealing, but they're unlikely to do anything about it, unless the thrives are still there or a weapon was used.

The apple fell straight into an entitled basket. Mom: I'm calling corporate! AM should have said : yes ma'am, and I'm calling the police with your license plate, description and children's name and school for identification. Or even better, call the local news and give them the video to play. Help us identify these unknown thieves!

A couple of my HS track teammates got caught stealing while wearing their shirts (which didn't have their names on them) and both got kicked off the team & banned from any school sports for the school year even though one of them was a star.

Always call the Police, in case things go downhill in a quick second, Then You’re looking at He said, She said. With the Police there, They would take over the situation and bring the 2 Boys downtown, that’ll wake up the Mother People do crazy things when They think that They’re in control of the situation. A quick trip to the Police Department would definitely silence the Mother, unless She got stupid too, and had to cal her Husband to bail Her & the 2 kids out. No matter what, a crime is a crime, if You let Kids off easy, They think it’s ok, to steal. Hard Times for Hard Crimes,, if You don’t, They will do it again, because of the very light way They are used to.Wake Them Up!

It's sad when someone is wrong and has done wrong, is shown evidence of it, and still buckles down. The woman should have apologized, paid for the theft, and went outside to discipline those brats. But nope, she is always right in her head. This is why they call her a Karen.

Honestly, they were in their school track uniforms? The store should have contacted the school with pictures of their uniforms and the video and let them handle it. You can bet those kids would be kicked off the track team in a heartbeat

The whole cop out of "youthful Indiscretion" over some little sh!theads shoplifting is total BS. The next video they SHOULD have been able to pull was that Karen whipping her sons a*s out in the car. THAT, my friends, is what's been wrong in this country for the last 2 generations or so. I was born in the late 60's and I got caught shoplifting a couple times as a child, NOT a teenager, and I got the hot wheel tracks across by bare a*s and not just once. The problem with these 2 kids is they were raised by a mother who is just as culpable in the crime they committed. You know if your kid is a sh!thead, and if you don't, then you're an even bigger sh!thead than your kid. The key is you gotta beat 'em when they're little... just like rubbing a puppy's nose is sh!t when it craps in the house. it's gonna learn quick "Hey, I better not sh!t in the house again". I only had to bust my kids a*s 2-3 times as a small child and guess what, that kid is now an adult with sound moral character.

I do believe that as a teenager there is time to teach them a lesson the right way and hopefully they learn. I remember a time my brother was a teenager and he with a friend tried to steal jewelry from Jcpenny and was caught. My mom went off on him like no other. She did not stick up for him and even asked the cops to take him but they released him back into her care which may have been worse. Lol. He was banned from there and guess what, he learned his lesson from that. There has to be some punishment and then some trust that they learned from the experience going forward and if not then the next time may not be so lucky.

Guys. Guys. My dudes in the comments. You can't have it both ways. Karen can't be both an okay name and a slur. You don't find people named the n word or the f word or the r word do you? Admittedly, I agree that a term not attached to a preexisting name would be better. But for f**k's sake it's not a slur
