Historically, churches haven’t been very welcoming toward LGBTQ+ people. Still, 47% of LGBTQ+ adults in the U.S. say they are religious; 1.5 million are Protestants and 1.3 million are Roman Catholics. Queer people have often been othered in religious communities, branded as sinners.

Luckily, not all churches are like that, and this story is a great example. User u/Toon_Lord recently shared a story from the past about the way his church’s pastor dealt with a homophobic Karen. The woman went on a bigoted rant about two lesbian teens she saw during service. However, the pastor and the father of one of the teens put her in her place.

Everyone should be welcome in a church, regardless of their race, gender, or sexuality

Gay people can find acceptance in the church, depending on which denomination they choose

Many churches, whether fundamentalist Christian or Protestant, haven’t been the most welcoming to gay people. Yet nearly half of LGBTQI+ persons in the U.S. are still religious. Some adopt the same religion they were born into, and others choose to leave their parents’ church and look for a church that reflects their values.

But that’s not an easy task for an LGBTQI+ person, as they can still face discrimination in many religious communities today. Francis DeBernardo, executive director of the LGBTQ-affirming New Ways Ministry, told NBC News that churches have vilified and excluded gay people for a long time.

And some choose to stay even when they’re not welcome. “I have seen an enormous number of LGBTQ people whose faith and religious identity are so strong that they continue to push for acceptance even against mammoth walls of opposition,” DeBernardo said.

Luckily, more and more churches are taking an LGBT-affirming stance. There are pastors who are openly gay, married to a same-sex partner, and even transgender. Brandon Thomas Crowley, an openly gay pastor of the Myrtle Baptist Church, says that his work is about taking Christianity back to its roots – accepting the idea that we are all God’s children.

“The queering that I do in churches is not bringing churches into the world or bringing the world into churches,” he told CBS News. “It’s actually drawing churches closer to the original message of Christ, which is about love and acceptance.”

The Roman Catholic church still has a harsh stance regarding LGBTQI+ people

It can be hard for gay people to find an LGBTQI+-affirming church. Even in 2024, many churches don’t welcome members of the LGBTQI+ community, especially those of the Roman Catholic denomination. The heads of the church also send mixed signals about their stance on the whole issue.

At the beginning of 2023, Pope Francis declared that homosexuality is not a crime but still a sin. A few days later, he clarified his remarks by adding that he meant that homosexual relations outside of marriage are a sin. Therefore, homosexuality per se is not a sin. “It is a sin, as is any sexual act outside of marriage,” he wrote in his reply.

At the end of 2023, the Pope then approved priests blessing same-sex marriages. However, at the beginning of 2024, the Vatican issued another statement, clarifying that this does not mean the Catholic church endorses homosexuality. At the same time, it’s not “heretical, contrary to the tradition of the church or blasphemous.” Still, that doesn’t apply to marriage or civil union.

However confusing these claims may be, it’s worth mentioning that Pope Francis has done some things that further the acceptance of LGBTQI+ people. In November of 2023, he met with a group of trans women for lunch at the Vatican. He also urged parents of gay children to love them unconditionally because they are also “children of God.”

Other Christian denominations have adopted policies of LGBTQI+ inclusion. Leaders of The Episcopal Church, Reform and Conservative Judaism, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and the Presbyterian Church (USA), for example, are vocal supporters of marriage equality, transgender inclusion, and other LGBTQI+ issues.

There are far too many CINO's in this country. Either you believe in Jesus and follow his teachings of love, forgiveness, acceptance, or you're NOT A CHRISTIAN! You follow the Old Testament? With its wars, and hate, prejudice and intolerance? Then again, you're NOT A CHRISTIAN!

Fun fact about the Roman Catholic church: It has numerous gender-nonconforming and queer saints. In the middle ages, people we'd call transgender today were thought of as chosen by God for Holy Purpose, as they had been given the toughest challenge God could provide - being born into a physical body that was not theirs. Christian hatred towards queer people is, relatively speaking, a fairly new thing at less than 300 years old.

Same here. I was raised Christian, and I still believe that Christ's teachings are basic, simple, good advice, and worth following. But I don't want to be associated with the people that claim the title but refuse the teachings. I don't want to be associated with hate. So, if they want the name, let them have it. I don't need it.

I started attending an Antiochian Orthodox church, and what made me decide to get baptized was the priest's attitude toward his gay niece. He said that she was gay and that while he disagreed with her lifestyle, he nonetheless loved her and accepted that she would make her own choices. He went on to say that she was a good person and that he was proud to be her uncle. I wish more Christians could be like Father Michael, especially given the hate-filled vitriol coming out of the conservative Protestant denominations.

Even as a Roman Catholic I could care less about gender, race, political etc background. I think, did you love, and were you loved in return. And God doesn’t care where you pray, be it a building or mountain top so long as you pray. And people don’t need that fanciest hat and clothing, or coveralls and a tee shirt, it’s about acceptance of others.

When you are telling a story, it is common to use the simple past tense. This tense is even called the story telling tense in some languages. I suppose the Karen also still has two kids! Had the narrator wanted to indicate a later change in the daughter's sexuality, they would have had to use a different tense or a clarifying phrase such as 'at that time, she was a lesbian'. This is why grammar matters.

... this pastor has proven to be unchristian in the most favourable way. "You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination." (Leviticus 18:22). Most likely reason this only mentions gay men? They didn't consider a woman enough of a person, but rather a piece of property, that simply doesn't have any own saxuel interest at all. Every time a pastor holds a speech that has this distinct humanist smell to it, they don't really convey christian values, but humanist values that are painted over in a christian colour. It seems to almost be accepted as a fact now that those were the "true christians" while those that take the racism, homophobia and taste for violence that the god of the old and even worse new testament - remember, the entire story only revolves around Scapeman being tortured to death so his omnipotent father, who is he, gains the ability to forgive the sins of his direct copies that he, perfect as he is, has made himself - as it is, as a given, truly obey their holy book and its teachings, are regarded as "not that christian after all". We should stop glossing over christianity with the very same humanism that it fought tooth and nails, lost due to having no valid points, and instead of accepting defeat, tries to frame themselves as supporters of anything and everything considered good by humanist standards. This very, very christian woman, likely the most devout in the congregation, was in fact perfectly christian, while her surrounding including the pastor was, in fact, humanists, but likely have fallen for the identity-twisting paint-over the church has applied on itself here, like every time their blatantisms are exposed or defeated. Being a Atheist has at least one advantage: you neither have to buy into outdated morals and perception of the world, and you don't have to ingratiate yourself towards the winning side after losing debate after debate after debate.

There is a difference between Religious values and Christian values. Jesus hated the Religous, they were Pharisees. He turned over their tables and whipped them in the temple when they were cheating the people. They killed him. Christians follow God's word. Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Sorry that is how I believe. ok this ol Boomer getting off her soap box.

Surely Christian is a subset of religious, not separate from it? Anyway, I think what many not-very-religious people hate is the hypocrisy of priests and the like telling people what not to do, then misusing donations and altar boys. I mean, love your neighbour as yourself, but beat or kill anyone who doesn't share your beliefs? Abstain from earthly pleasures, but I'll turn water into wine? Don't make idols, but stuff your churches full of statues of Mary? Thou shalt not steal, but all that money to the televangelist pays for his pool and yacht...

First the disclaimer: pastor John is awesome and we need more people like him. My question is how tolerant would they have been if their kids weren't gay? Hypothetically of course. Just curious.

Because I am A Sexual I can’t even find acceptance within any community, heterosexuals, think there is something wrong with me the LGBTQ community doesn’t want people like me around either. I don’t think I am a terrible person. Maybe there is some place I get to be me. Maybe someday people will get it.

I'm pretty sure op meant to say she IS a lesbian instead of "was". Lol your sexuality is something you're born with you cannot change it.
