Every country has something that people associate it with the most. For Italy, it's probably espresso and pasta. When we think about Australia, snakes making their way into your living room probably pop up in our minds. The U.S., in its own right, reminds us of the stereotypes about fast food.
But what connotations does Canada evoke? Polite people and universal healthcare? Freezing winters and hockey? We'd hate to reduce any country to such simplicity, so we've collected some images that might paint a picture from all sides: its people, its nature, and just general awesomeness that happens only in Canada.

A little over 40 million people live in Canada, and in 2024, it still ranked 15th in the World Happiness Report. Although that's pretty good, it's a slip two places down from last year. For young people, however, life doesn't seem to be so good, as Canada placed 58th in the happiness ranking for people under 30.
Older people, however, think that living in Canada is the bee's knees, as in the category of happiness of those 60 years and older, Canada was in 8th place. Still, Canada ranks high among other countries in metrics such as racial equality and quality of life, as in 2023, The U.S. News placed Canada 2nd among 87 countries for racial equality and 3rd for quality of life.

"A Wildlife Overpass" In Banff National Park Of Canada
These are amazing. Vehicle collisions with wildlife, especially deer and moose cost so much that it affects insurance rates in some provinces. But we've found that if we build just a few dozen of these per province, we can reduce those collisions (and save thousands of animals) by almost 90%. Making them very cost effective
Life in Canada is pretty good. And how can it be bad when there are so many unique things to appreciate? If you thought that Canada was "just America, but colder," you probably need to think again. Canada has some things that make it pretty unique, so let's go over some of them, shall we?
First, the amazing nature of Canada. Banff National Park is one of the most famous nature spots in all of Canada. With its turquoise glacier-fed Lake Louise, the park offers skiing, hiking, canoeing, yoga, and other recreational activities all year round. While many people opt for Niagara Falls or go see the Aurora Borealis in Manitoba, Banff is an almost out-of-this-world beautiful place that offers much more.

Canada is famous for making maple syrup, but did you know that more than 80% of the world's syrup is made in Canada? What's more, 90% of Canadian maple syrup comes from the province of Quebec alone.
The Quebecois have a unique dish they make with maple syrup, called "pouding chômeur," which translates to "unemployment pudding." It's simply biscuit dough poached in maple syrup caramel, and it originated during the Great Depression when people were looking to make something sweet with limited resources.

Hockey is not just a sport for Canadians; it's one of their biggest sources of pride. Canada has 23 Olympic medals in men's hockey, 14 of which are gold. Women have won four consecutive gold Olympic medals in 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014, then won again in 2022. The other side of the Canadian $5 bill even has kids playing hockey on it!

If you've ever had Hershey's chocolate in Canada, you'd notice that it tastes a bit different than it does in America. Canadians have reformulated Hershey's chocolate so that it tastes smoother and sweeter. The American version is more cheesy in flavor because, according to Hershey's senior chocolate specialist Gina Shroy, Americans like it that way.
"Canadian chocolate is higher in fat, and it is a larger particle size, but Americans tend to gravitate towards a little bit more of a grittier or even cheesier flavor," she explained.

Canada also boasts its significance to all the sweet teeth of North America. Hamilton, Ontario, is where the magic of Swedish Fish happens. Urban Owl In Vancouver, BC
My boyfriend always gets fooled by those fake owls on buildings so when he was walking to 7-Eleven for a midnight snack he had to take a double-take when he saw this fella. Perched right on the intersection of two main roads, wasn't bothered by us walking by or by the cars. People walked by and didn't even notice it! The owl turned its head to watch them walk by but they couldn't be the wiser. I was surprised to see it sitting so close to the sidewalk. There's some enormous rats living in that "community garden" and the alleyway, so I assume it was hunting. I have no idea what kind of owl it is, I was thinking barred, but it doesn't look quite the same?
When we think of fortified cities, many old European towns probably come to mind. However, Canada has its own walled city, Quebec. It's the only fortified city north of Mexico City in North America that has proper walls all around. It's not medieval, like, say, Dubrovnik, but it has its own charm, with horses and carriages passing by from time to time.

I Completed My 600th Donation At Canadian Blood Services
We used to go donate blood sometimes with our friend group. I was really bummed that I couldn't donate, because one of my meds prevents that. My bestie always tested, but mostly had too low hemoglobin count to donate either. So we were there just as a moral support. (Also, they were always incredible nice and said that moral supports are just as important as those who donate.)
Lastly, let's tackle the Canadian weather. Those who've never been there think that Canada is probably always cold, icy, and snowy. And while winters can get brutal in the most northern cities, it's not winter all year round. In Toronto, it gets up to 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius) during summer. In Vancouver, the temperatures don't drop below freezing even during winter, and summers get as hot as 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius).

Never Been More Proud To Be Canadian
For those who are confused as what's going on, this is the day after a rain or snow melt, when the temperature rises one day and freezes overnight, so by morning there is ice everywhere. It's very dangerous to drive and walk anywhere. "Black ice" is all over. That is ice that is so clear and smooth it looks like there's nothing there until you step on it and instantly fall on your a*s. This is the best thing to do on a day you'll be likely excused from going to school if it's open, unless the schools decided to be kind and close. Still a bit dangerous because you never know if some idiot decided it's good idea to drive on roads like that.

People will literally tell you if you dropped anything, even if it's not anything worthy, like a receipt or expired bus transfer. I'm American, I support Canada. Our current excuse for an administration is a joke. A farce. Makes me ashamed.
4 years? Trump is training up his sons to form a dynasty is what I heard. Maybe he wants royalty in his family.
It's been said so many times already it's a cliche but since no one's brought it up here yet, Canada isn't for sale and Trump can take his 51st state bullsh*t and shove it somewhere I'm too polite to say (because I'm Canadian).
I'm from the US and want to tell him and muskrat where to shove it.
Can someone tell me what the difference is between Trump and Putin when it comes to respecting the sovereignty of other countries?
Oh. Maybe that's the reason that he's targeting Canada, Mexico and Greenland, as he hasn't yet realized that the map doesn't really end on the left of the US and there's other countries behind the Pacific ocean he could try to annex.... Anyone tell him that the US actually has a border with Russia?
On behalf of Australia, please DON"T tell him there are other countries across the ocean.
I'll hold my tongue - wouldn't want anything happen to you lovely killer-country. (Maybe you can invite him and "lose" him somewhere in the Outback??)
None, both are like bullies in the playground - they attract other bullies. Stand up to them and they'll beat you up. Only way is to carry a bigger bat - generally they don't like pain.
Trump has yet to invade a neighbor? He's threatened Canada, Mexico, Panama, and Greenland so far :p
I really want to go back to Canada! There was so much I didn't get to see when I went. I would go in summer next time though! If my sister manages to finish her media course and get her dream job in Canada maybe I will.

They burned the White House down once; they can do it again :) /j, just in case.
Why is that the only thing on American's minds? Canada doesn't feel the need to invest as much because what country in their right mind wants to start a war with Canada?
We don't need any defense, the idiots in the the White House will self-implode.
Moving to Canada was the best choice I ever made in my life. It was 15 years ago, and I never once regretted it. People are really kind and tolerant, nature is beautiful, homes are more comfortable. And I was from Europe.
It's just a place, like anywhere else. Borders don't matter. Yes, it gets cold. Yes, we seem to like hockey more than everywhere else. Beautiful? The whole planet is beautiful.
I travelled across the lower provinces by train and it was amazing how many similarities there were to the different areas in Australia.
We absolutely love Canada here in the states. Can't wait for you to becomes a state. First we have to break your economy though. Sorry.
I couldn't finish this post, it was overrun with negativity about America. If you are so disturbed, sick, tainted, or some other ailment, then go. Head north, head south, cross the border and see if it's so much better. Trump is working hard to make this country strong and self sufficient, instead of an international doormat. Buck up.
Well there is no doubt Canada is beautiful and the people are friendly. But America is too. We have very helpful and kind people too. And beautiful? Go to New England in the fall. Go to Yellowstone and Yosemite. I'm not bashing Canada. But I'm sure not ashamed of America. Let's just try to get along shall we?
Canada would be a great place to live if it wasn't sandwiched between the 2 americas.
You mean the two PARTS of the Americas. Actually two parts of only the United States. They are not America. They are one small part of North America, Central America and South America. The simply appropriated the name to make themselves feel bigger and more important.
I could be wrong, but I think they may be referring to Canada having the lower 48 states to the south and Alaska to the north (well north west really).
My friend went to Canada as a chemical engineer and shortly came back (some years ago). Said one can't live completely on what one earns there. Since he is a spendthrift I don't understand if it was true. Canadians, tell me if he was lying. (He is a bureaucrat now who loves to visit foreign lands and blow up his money on questionable things he is the worst kind of spendthrift you will ever meet.
I live by myself, without any problem. Currently on job insurance because I'm employed, and still make enough to be totally fine. So yeah, your friend is probably really bad with money.
It's insanely expensive living in Vancouver and Toronto. Small towns in the middle or north where it can get to be -40, are more affordable.
Nah, not true at all . Most of us live incredibly well on what we make.
I would think a chemical engineer can live on one salary. His mismanagement may be a combination of entitlement and compensation for something. One of my in-laws and his wife learned about the psychology of money and it helped curb his spending. His thrifty wife handles the finances and gives him an allowance. They're both very happy with the arrangement. Your friend may be addicted to spending (like my in-law, who now blows just a few bucks on pay day instead of the whole cheque).
Well how would you expect sane people to act when their sovereignty is threatened by a small d**k having dementia riddled psychopath?
I think as a whole, we are typically pretty nice. That doesn't mean that we're pushovers if someone f***s with us.
