    Carl Jung believed the self is compromised of many different archetypes (the ego, persona, shadow, etc…) Individuation is a process of transformation essential to development in which the conscious becomes integrated with the personal and collective unconscious. A part of this process is differentiation, identifying and separating each part of the psyche.

    As my mind slips through the cracks in the darkest of spells, I envision something similar to this print, full of heavy hearted pain. The optimism of this image, and how I work through my own spells is to remind myself that although there may be a demon part of me standing above myself with a noose, so to speak, it is not my entirety. It is an illusion, my nasty ego… still, there exists a part of me, innocent to this demon’s whispers, curled & asleep, bound eventually to wake up…. this image helps me clearly see the two even though in my worst of spells I may only think from one.

    Realizing the tension of the opposites during suicidal epicodes and creating An Ode to Depression wasn’t enough. In September in a small spark of inspiration I reminded myself that there was still apart of me that was asleep, but it was more than that. I no longer wanted to identify with my body, my gender, the beauty I relied on in the rooms I used. I felt like nothing except a face. I told myself over and over that my life had become a tragedy, everything ended in death. The next week I created this print, Tragedy. In addition to the nasty ego, the self asleep, we now see a part of the self killed off. Killing a part of our selves, our egos, is necessary for rebirth and moving forward.

    Jung considered the Tension of the Opposites, or dualities within us, a ‘divine drama’, in his own words and an essential part of enlightenment and discovering the self. When peering into the unconscious we will be confronted with the battle of the opposites and the truth exists as a middle path in holding the tension between them and not identifying as one or the other.

    Growing up in middle class American suburbia, I was confronted with the veneer of The American Housewife everywhere I ran, and escaping these confines in young adulthood didn’t help. The facade thickened in New York, but underneath the ego of womanhood was a monster, a repressed and feral id slipping through the cracks.

    After the death of winter takes it toll, there must be violence in order for the rebirth of spring. As I stare endlessly into the black frame, time ticking away, I wonder what will my next transformation be. Tucked away deeply inside of me is the feminine I have buried and disregarded, and from the slightest of whispers and echoes of my subconscious I hear her rise, wake up again, but this time anew. She is fragile, delicate, free of the societal expectation of hair and beauty standards, her body is her own and it is not sexualized. Far away, in the womb of my unconscious, I do not know her, but soon she will be reborn
