Today, we live in a world where it’s become routine to attend video calls in jammies and pitching ideas to a collection of bobbing heads on our screens. But one man took this to the next level by daring to attend a virtual courtroom session from the comfort of his own bed.
The man, who was identified as Tyler Ashbaugh in the video call, was served a heated chiding by the judge, who schooled the man on norms and etiquettes to be followed in the virtual halls of justice.
“Alright Mr. Ashbaugh, why are you in bed on Zoom?” the judge asked.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, ma’am,” the man replied.
The judge demanded an answer from the man regarding why he was taking the call from bed

“No, that doesn’t answer my question. My question is: why are you in bed on Zoom?” she asked again.
“I was just waiting to be let into the courtroom and then I was going to sit down in my dining room, ma’am,” Tyler replied.
“No, you were not because you were all relaxed when I asked you who you were and you were just chilling on the bed. Here’s the thing. You have a privilege for appearing on Zoom. You are not to be in bed,” the judge said.
“Try that again and your Zoom privileges will be permanently revoked. Do you understand?” she asked Tyler.
“Yes, your honor,” the man replied, accepting the judge’s scolding.
The judge said his “Zoom privileges will be permanently revoked” if he repeats his action

The court session was related to a motion to allow Tyler, who has been on full house arrest for over two years, to drop his 4-year-old daughter to school from Monday to Friday.
“Since being on house arrest, it’s been a big strain on my family, especially my fiancée. She’s having to do a lot of work on her own and take my daughter places … I just want to try to help and do something for my family, anything for my family, be allowed to contribute something to my family,” Tyler said as he made his plea.
Tyler requested the judge to allow him to drop his daughter to school from Monday to Friday

The judge allowed him to drop his daughter off to school every day from Monday to Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.
“Let me explain something to you. That means you are just dropping your child off. If you see a McDonald’s on your route, which you probably will, you are not allowed to stop at the McDonald’s and say, ‘well, it was on the way so I thought I could do that,’” the judge explained.
“The only thing you are allowed to do is take your child to that school and go back home. That is it,” the judge declared. “Do you understand?”
“Yes, your honor,” Tyler replied.
The judge made it clear that he was only allowed to drop the child off to school and then come back home without making any detours

Who cares if he was in bed, it's his prison cell, he didn't join the army ffs. I get she wants respect but he was dressed and otherwise present as required on zoom.
It’s incredibly disrespectful to the person in authority whom you are more or less pleading with/asking for a favor that they do NOT have to grant to you. This man is on house arrest - for committing a CRIME and breaking the law, I assume. The judge does not have to grant his request or be lenient in any way in regards to this matter. I believe that the fact that he has zero respect for the judicial system is actually important in this matter - he is the supplicant in this case. Be respectful if you are a supplicant. Would you think it’s totally okay for an employee to go into their boss’s office to ask for a favor (such as a last-minute time off request for a vacation/non-emergency situation) and the employee sits back in the chair and puts their feet up on their boss’s desk and laces their hands behind their head? They don’t have to stand at “military” attention or grovel, but they should have some respect. As an aside, at that moment his house WASN’T his prison cell. His house was an extension of the courtroom. He would not be allowed to lie on the ground in the courtroom.

I’m mostly bedridden due to severe disabilities, getting into a wheelchair when I have to go somewhere. When I had to be part of a zoom call involving my court case, I of course used my wheelchair, even though I was in a lot of pain (as well as having a pressure ulcer that made sitting very painful). No offence, but if a heavily disabled person can get up long enough to get through a zoom call, this guy has no excuses. 🫤🤷♀️
