‘The Joker’ Stairs In New York Become A Tourist Attraction And Here Are 14 Pics Taken By Fans

Instagrammers and movie fans are flocking to the staircase, located at 167th Street in the Bronx borough of New York City, to visit the place where Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck celebrated becoming The Clown Prince of Crime.

The Bronx is already home to popular tourist destinations like The Bronx Zoo, Yankee Stadium, and the New York Botanical Gardens. Now, this staircase has definitely made it to the list of locales to visit in the area.

Connecting the Shakespearean and Anderson Avenues at West 167th Street, these stairs weren’t particularly popular. But things have changed. Judging from online photos and videos, people are frequently hanging out there, with some even dressed up as the iconic villain.

The #Jokerstairs already have nearly 900 tagged photos on Instagram, and were also added to Google Maps as a “religious site.” However, local residents aren’t happy with the mania. “We hope it ends soon because we don’t need this,” Jonathan Francis, a 29-year-old who has lived in the neighborhood his entire life, told Gothamist. “We feel disrespected.”

Ignacio, a psychology student who’s one of the visitors to the site, said he really enjoyed the movie. “It made me try and see the world from another point of view, taking into account the pathologies and psychosis one can suffer from,” he told Bored Panda. “Due to DC failing its latest movies, I felt the obligation to support the production of this film.”

The man said the staircase didn’t feel the same in person as it did in the movie. “The cinematic magic was achieved by four people, the director of photography, the composer, the director, and, of course, Joaquin Phoenix himself.”

As for the movie itself, Joker climbed to $737 million worldwide this weekend after another successful week at the box office, and is expected to pass $810+ million in global receipts. Experts believe that Joker won’t stop until it tops $900 million, becoming the biggest R-rated film in history.

Here’s what people said about this craze

i really hope they don't have to block it off because of tourists...and most people probably don't even realize they're in the way, they just want to copy stupid social media trends. ugh.

Not sure about being "disrespected", but it would be annoying for locals who just want to get from point A to point B. Hopefully it dies down, but it's par for course living in NYC.

I know. I felt bad for him until that part came up. They're being "disrespectful" by being psyched about a place from a movie? You can be annoyed by the people, but f**k you if you are offended by them.

So tired of these people. I went to a event once and could not even enjoy it because instagrammers needed to get the perfect shot and were actually telling people to move out the way.

I never pay any attention to instagrammers apart from posts like this. I must admit, it makes me smile a little seeing them take themselves and their "craft" so seriously, doing something that you see tourists do every day in front of every tourist attraction on the planet: Take exactly the same photo as a million others.

I gave you an upvote because I agree with you and find it very sad. Everyone is just so busy pooping on strangers from their homes (or public transport). I get it that so many tourists can get above annoying - they can be outright disrespectful and rude, but nobody mentions how you can do these things without blocking the way and acting like a selfish barbarian. When my husband and I were in Tokyo, visiting all the fandom famous spots, we managed to take plenty of pretty pictures, we didn't need to disturb anyone.

Idk about it being disrespectful so much as just plain annoying. It will die down eventually. and when they do a sequel im sure another location will become the "it" spot. But on the other hand can you imagine if social media was around when rocky came out in 76' hahaha

They'll stop come winter. I've been near those stairs in winter, and it's not safe to try to go up them when it's snowy and icy, given how steep they are! I used to live near Tom's Diner in Manhattan, whose exterior was used for the Seinfeld diner, Nick's (and it's also the diner Suzanne Vega wrote about in her song). Tourists visited the joint in droves. Too bad for them. Tom's Diner in Brooklyn near the Brooklyn Museum (different owners), has fantastic food!

To be honest I preferred Scorsese's Taxi Driver. The isolated character Travis Bickle's (De Niro) descent into madness. Was much better plotted but it is good to see the influence of Taxi Driver decades later.
