If you haven’t been able to keep up with the Depp v. Heard trial, let me catch you up to speed. Johnny Depp is suing his ex-wife Amber Heard for $50 million after she wrote an op-ed piece in the Washington Post in 2018, implying he abused her. The trial has now been going on for over six weeks, and over 100 hours of testimonies have been heard. But let’s go back to the beginning of the couple’s relationship timeline to understand how they got to this point.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard met in 2009 on the set of The Rum Diary, and began dating in 2014. Later that same year, the pair got engaged and was married by February 2015. Unfortunately, however, newlywed bliss was short-lived for the pair. After only 15 months of marriage, Heard filed for divorce and even obtained a restraining order against Depp, claiming that he had abused her.
Nothing in her testimony added up. Her witnesses seemed so uncooperative also.
Depp has denied these accusations since 2016, and a $7 million divorce settlement was reached in court between the couple. Heard pledged to donate her funds from the settlement to two charities, the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and the ACLU. She released a statement saying, "As described in the restraining order and divorce settlement, money played no role for me personally and never has, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and, in doing so, hopefully help those less able to defend themselves.” She went on to say, “This is over and above any funds that I have given away in the past and will continue to give away in the future."
After the divorce, the couple released a joint statement saying, “Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm." Depp presumably thought the whole affair was ending and that they could finally move on with their lives. Unfortunately, the battle between the two of them was far from over. Cut to 2018. Heard releases an op-ed piece for The Washington Post portraying herself as a victim of domestic abuse. She never mentioned Johnny Depp by name in the piece, but he was clearly implied as the perpetrator.
You can see there is still mutual respect there....unlike someone and all her ex-friends.
Won’t we all? Lmao I swear this trial has been like my whole life these past couple of weeks
The op-ed piece was really the catalyst for the seemingly never-ending legal battles between the two. In 2019, Depp sued Heard for $50 million for defamation, after her claims in the op-ed piece began costing Depp acting jobs. In response to that, Heard counter-sued for $100 million. In 2020, Johnny Depp also sued the publisher of The Sun for libel, as they published an article in 2018 claiming he had been violent towards Heard. Depp continued to deny these claims, despite Heard testifying that he threatened her life “many times”. The London court denied Depp an appeal at the time, deeming The Sun’s claims about him to be “substantially true”.
And she looked absolutely, jaw-droppingly, STUNNING. Graceful, genuine, composed. Cast shade on Ms Turd.
As far as the former couple’s 2022 legal battles, the ongoing defamation case began in Virginia on April 12th. The entire trial has been widely publicized and incredibly painful to watch. In their opening statements, Heard’s legal team said that Depp would “try to turn this case into a soap opera”, but the reality of the case is much heavier. Any trial dealing with claims of domestic violence and assault is never easy to watch unfold, but it must be even harder to be a part of when the entire world is watching the courtroom’s every move.
My dad was a victim of domestic abuse from my mother during their entire marriage… emotional, mental, and physical (she would hit him and sometimes even slice him with a knife.) This was in the 80s-90s, when men were NEVER the “victim”. I had to watch my father get broken and beaten by my mother regularly. I hope this case is a step towards realizing that abusers are not restricted to any one gender, etc and that nothing justifies hitting another person.
Those allegations are so vile if they're proven to all be fabricated. Imagine your whole life (applies to any gender) turned upside down because your ex decides to tell the world lies about you. Absolutely horrible.
What a brave courageous man. Hopefully he gets the justice he deserves
Johnny Depp’s testimonies have included incredibly painful moments from his past including his childhood growing up with an abusive mother, his past struggles with substance abuse and his turbulent former relationship with Heard. While he admits that the couple had their fair share of arguments, he maintains that he was not abusive towards her. "Never did I myself reach the point of striking Ms. Heard in any way nor have I ever struck any woman in my life." In fact, it appears that Heard knew Depp was actually a victim, rather than an abuser. Jessica Meyers, Depp’s attorney, asked him what his response was in an audio clip that had been played for the court where Heard said to him, “Tell the world, Johnny. Tell them, Johnny Depp, I, Johnny Depp, a man, I'm a victim, too, of domestic violence.” Depp responded, “I said, ‘Yes, I am’.”
As the testimonies began winding down this week, the courtroom became more and more heated. The British model Kate Moss testified on behalf of Johnny Depp, denying claims that he had pushed her down a flight of stairs while they were dating. Heard had brought up the rumor at one point, claiming she was fearful he might do the same to her sister while they were arguing. Moss cleared up the situation, saying she one time fell down the stairs while following Depp out of a room. “As I left the room, I slid down the stairs and I hurt my back," she said. "And I screamed because I didn't know what had happened to me and I was in pain. [Depp] came running back to help me and carried me to my room and got me medical attention."
She didn't even give her a second to fabricate anything, she had her so rattled after that.
Also, referring to Vanessa Paradis as “my girl” over and over again. Burn
Depp also issued a “blanket denial of Heard’s testimony” earlier this week. “It's insane to hear heinous accusations of violence, sexual violence, that she's attributed to me, that she's accused me of," he said. "I don't think anyone enjoys having to split themselves open and tell the truth, but there are times when one simply has to because it's gotten out of control. Horrible. Ridiculous. Humiliating. Ludicrous. Painful. Savage. Unimaginably brutal. Cruel. Um, and all false. All false. This is not easy for any of us, I know that," Depp went on to say. "But I did get here and I did tell the truth."
Have you seen W***y Wonka? W***y Wonka doesn't matter to you? Lol
Though reactions to the trial have been somewhat mixed, many people are considering it a turning point for male victims of domestic violence. Heard has admitted to hitting Depp, yet the idea of a man being a victim of assault from their female partner is still considered taboo by some people. Unfortunately, because women are more often the victims of assault, people are more likely to believe them and dismiss violence against men. “When I initially heard [about the case], I was a little shocked. I was like: ‘Wow. Who would’ve thought this could happen to Johnny Depp?’” Tony Enos, a Philadelphia pop singer and survivor of domestic violence, told NBC News. “Awareness is everything,” he said. “Men can be survivors too.”
For real tho. I have no idea how she ever landed any acting jobs, ever. Oh wait….yes I do…Johnny go them for her
After years of ugly legal battles, hopefully Depp will soon be able to relax knowing that this nightmare is ending. There is no way to predict how long the jury will take to reach a final decision, but one thing we can count on is that Twitter will be ablaze with reactions as soon as the verdict is announced. Enjoy reading the rest of these reactions to the trial, and don't forget to upvote your favorite takes. Then we'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below if you've been keeping up with the trial: if you were on the jury, what would you want them to do?
How utterly stupid is she? I don't understand how she actually pulled this stuff off she honestly seems to have not a single goddamn brain cell.
Sanne H., I'm pretty sure that all the women in this trial identify as women, and the same with the men, so your technicality really doesn't matter at all.
Frog is saying that it doesn't matter what the gender of the victim is....
Load More Replies...These ladies have been superb, especially Camille & Dr Curry, complete experts in their fields.
Who's the lady with glasses on the upper right? She's so pretty.
Load More Replies...I now want all four of them playing major roles in the next Pirates movie.
And Amber heard is the bad guy that ends up in Davy Jones lockar
Load More Replies...Congratulations, folks. Sanne H is now suspended because they tried to teach the world the supposed difference between gender and sex. The funny thing is that if someone on a thread about transgenderism failed to accept the relatively recent distinction (first proposed in 1968 following discussion in 1955), they'd be suspended, too. I don't have a dog in this fight; I just think so much of the cancellation around here is just wrong.
In most languages of this world sex and gender is the same word. I think it comes from that.
Load More Replies...What disturbs me is when they asked Amber Heard if she wasn't afraid or hesitated (dont't remember the exact word used) when sharing embarresing photos of Johnny Depp sleeping and so on. Her answer was 🤷♀️ "Why would I ?"... Eeh, because an absuser propably would get worse if you humiliated and belittled them to your friends?
I don't think she realizes that Moss is 100 times more famous than her.
That moment was epic. Elaine accusing him of seeking his 15 minutes of fame, he accusing her of the same thing for representing Amber Heard. He was a GREAT witness.
Tbh, I've never heard of Kate Moss but I have so much respect for her from this case!
Sorrowfully we don't know that. The jury is to decide and people are weird
All the times that she was on the stand fake-crying, we never saw Johnny laugh at her misery. She's proven to be pro-tier manipulator, a pathological liar, and to lack any level self-awareness. Johnny presents as pretty genuine, and his positive reactions all show vindication for the things nobody believed before all this. I think anyone with eyes could call this case. I'm not worried about what the jury will say.
I just got the worst ever second hand embarrassment I have ever felt
Its not just about her writing it about him, they need to prove she wrote it with the intent to damage him and his reputation.
Yeah she chased him through 5 bathrooms and 2 bedrooms, kicked the door in -to tell him to leave her alone lol.
Wait, what??? That small picture in the middle is a bruise???!!! It looks much more like heavy make-up applied in the wrong way! And I'M NOT SHAMING VICTIMS, AS EVERY PHYSICAL OR EMOTIONAL IS ONE TOO MUCH! But having played heavily body-involved sports and also got hit more than one time by a jerkface... the last one causing real harm!... I just can't see how is is a lot of film make-up and, if all, a minor touch.
there are only two reasons heard gave rambling answers: 1. her legal team did not properly prep her in that she is to give direct answers to questions without editorializing or embellishing as that is where witnesses screw up; or,2. they did tell her but she is such a loose cannon that she thinks it better for her to avoid a yes or no but go into a monologue. she was her own worse enemy.
I think Katy Cordeth lives in an Alternative universe. Or hasn't actually listened to Amber Heard mash up her replies or Katy has 'I hate all men syndrome'.
I saw a lot of people on Twitter saying they don't know why everyone is watching this, it's just rich people and celebrities to distract us. I agree, there is a lot going on in the world right now and my heart does go out to the victims of the shooting in Texas but you have to understand the gravity of this case. You have to understand what it means for all victims of domestic violence. Those who want to be heard, those who have been falsely accused. The legal precedent that would be set at the end. It is actually quite important also.
this trial is about more than just two celebrities fighting about reputation and/or money. it is finally giving validity to men who have traditionally either not reported abuse or were not believed when they did report. very similar to what happens when a man reports that he was raped, though that has other implications that they worry about. it also shows how a person can try to fake being a victim can back fire which i hope that those who would consider doing such a thing will take note that expert/professionals can see through that charade.
And yet all that faking being a victim, no perjury charges will EVER be filed.
Load More Replies...I try not to use the word "hate" because it's such a strong word... but I genuinely HATE this female. She's not a "woman" women wouldn't behave this way. She's not a "girl" she's grown. She's a female... that's it. She's not worth the air she breathes.
I agree with the word 'hate.' I'm unsure about you saying she's not a 'woman.' She is a woman. She's the right age and she's a female - that's woman. There can be bad women and bad men.
Load More Replies...I think AH is abusive and that she is a liar. Furthermore, I believe charging her with assault and perjury would be appropriate. Having said that, it's frustrating to me that people are being so vitriolic toward her, calling her names like "Amber Turd", and threatening her. This is inappropriate and unacceptable. Why bring yourselves down to her level? This is what Trump did during his campaign and presidency, fostering an attitude of fear, hate, and tribalism rather than addressing the issues. We have to do better than that.
Since Johnny got together with this woman, I thought she was trouble... but who I was to judge by reading the yellow press and thinking heaven entered his mid-life crisis... But what I see now is so utterly ugly - and only on the side of AH! I SO MUCH DISTASTE HER AND WHAT A NUT-JOB SHE DID FOR ALL WOMEN (AND VICITIMS) WHO REALLY SUFFER ABUSE! And on top of this she claimes she is borderline, bipolar or whatever. Using a serious mental disorder as an excuse to get away with what she's done!!! Not realizing what a throwback her behavior is for all the common people who have to live with this disorder and try to establish themselves in society while permanently fighting the prejudices on a daily basis AH just had used as an excuse! She's like the evil step-mother in those fairy tales when it comes to this! I hope Johnny's repulsion will be established and that AH will dissappear in the same dark hole she's emerged from.
I'm not stating my opinion on this case one way or another but I just can't stand the amount of people passing judgement or making comments on how victims of abuse are "supposed to behave". Again, this is nothing to do with who I think is guilty in this case but to say someone isn't showing the 'usual signs' or isn't 'acting right' for a victim is dead wrong. We don't all turn into timid, perturbed, shadows of our former selves - it's not one size fits all. If you're not a professional and you haven't worked one-to-one with the person, keep your unfounded opinions to yourself.
I don't know if anyone wondered about this before... but isn't it a little odd that someone like Heard knew everything Johnny was into before drawing him in and then just used him, getting parts, mooching off him? Maybe it's just me but I can't imagine her reading the things Johnny does or things he listens to, and then calls him a f a t, old man behind his back and acts like this. It feels like she hunted him down and made herself look attractive for him to pursue, because let's face it, he's a bit of a unique guy; it's hard to believe she just happens to like the same things. She's just into money and fame.
When Johnny told her she would never see his eyes again, that was powerful. He said to her, "I loved you. What was I thinking?"
I'm very uncomfortable with the trial, the media coverage and the tacit invitation to the public to pile on and tear Amber apart. The trial heard professional evidence on her mental health diagnoses which to me means there is no chance of a fair hearing anyway, and I'm really not sure how reliable the testimony can be of immensely rich people, who can afford top lawyers, with decades of prolific substance abuse to their credit. If this was a normal case and they weren't rich, famous and media-worthy, they might not even be seen as credible witnesses. I can see others see it differently but this doesn't feel right or humane to me. Clearly a payday for the lawyers though. In other words, I'm not on the side of either person, I'm just questioning whether this circus is the right way to get to the truth.
This is a horrible take. You are basically saying that because Amber Heard has mental health diagnoses, the trial is therefore unfair. To be extremely blunt, mental health issues don't give someone a pass for shattering someone's finger with a wine bottle. Additionally, Amber Heard is NOT seen as a credible witness. That's the entire point. Expensive lawyers cannot save a person that's life is so raveled up in lies that they don't even know what the truth is anymore. Lawyers aren't magic. They downplay bad facts and emphasize good ones. That's literally all they do, but some do it incredibly well. On another note, if these two weren't celebrities, the case wouldn't get this level of attention. This is a massive step forward for male domestic violence victims. Nobody is asking for you to choose a side, but please open your eyes and realize the positives that come from this.
Load More Replies...Was Vanessa Paradis asked as a witness too? I do not doubt the good intentions of Kate Moss, but a past wife seems more valuable as a witness to me than a past date.
Don't think Amber used Vanessa's name in any of her stories so the only thing she could be used for is a general character witness. Where as Amber stated the reason she "started swinging at johnny" one time was because of "what happened to Kate Moss" when he supposedly pushed her down some stairs. So they called her up to see if there was any truth to that or if Amber was just using that as an excuse to start punching Depp. Turns out the latter is true.

I'm actually sick and tired of hearing about the case. Why don't we just find Johnny Depp innocent and Amber heard guilty already so that we can get back to more Pirates movies?
It's not about guilty or not guilty in this case. This is not a criminal trial. It's a civil trial for money. This will be decided on whether it was more likely than not that Amber Heard damaged Johnny Depp's reputation, and that resulted in him losing a substantial amount income. The reason it is getting so much press is that it is showing how a domestic abuser painted their victim in a light that the victim was then treated as the abuser, and it was literally because Johnny Depp was a male that it was ever able to go that direction. If you're not interested, stop reading the articles, but this is important and deserves the press it is getting. If these two weren't celebrities, it would not get this level of attention. Johnny Depp suffered for years, and this trial is forcing the world to open its eyes.
