Restaurants In Italy Give A Glimpse Of What Post-Lockdown Life Might Look Like

After reports of daily Covid-19 deaths dipping in Italy, the country is starting to slowly emerge from the lockdown. Back in March 10, the Italian government issued severe lockdown measures, preventing people from going outside with the exception of essential errands. Now, the country is starting to emerge from the longest lockdown in the continent, although the prospects of what life will be are far from what we used to know.

On Monday, millions of people in Italy were allowed to return to work as the government starts to slowly relax the severe measures it put into place back in March. In anticipation of further restrictions being lifted, various businesses are preparing to start running again, however, whatever image we had of normal life is now changing. Restaurants are installing plexiglass sheets between and across tables to protect customers from the potential risk of getting infected with the Coronavirus.

Restaurants and cafes in Rome and Milan are taking precautions by installing barriers in hopes of attracting customers that might otherwise be deterred from eateries in fear of getting infected with the virus. Businesses are employing the use of plexiglass sheets to create barriers between customers and service providers. Italy is not the only country using plexiglass in hopes of attracting customers, Suitsupply stores are also using the material to “corona-proof” their business.

I'm not sure this would bring too many people back to restaurants. In reality its a false sense of security, seeing as how you can't eat with a mask on. The safest place, until masks are not required to enter an establishment, is at home.

I dunno, I feel like this just ruins the whole mood of the restaurant. I go to them not just for the food, but for the ambiance and I feel like this might ruin the ambiance.

There are barriers between the people sharing a table so you either can't have a conversation or have to shout over everyone also shouting to be heard around the plexiglass?

This reminds me of being little, and the school bus would come, and it would be one of the newer ones with really high seat backs. So you could crouch down and you were in another world at no one could see... at least in my little kid brain....

I think these are a good idea. I do hope that some tables only have the barriers with the next table and thus when I go for dinner with my wife I can chose that one....(I could think of a comment here but my wife might read this and then I would be in trouble!!! lol :-) ) The comment about bringing the noise down is a good one. I look forward to supporting my local restaurant as soon as possible. The big chains might have to wait awhile!!
