Some comics perfectly sum up what every long-term relationship is like, but Bonnie Pang’s work is a long-term relationship. The cartoon artist said her series IT Guy & ART Girl is entirely based on the moments she shares with her partner, and they’re absolutely heartwarming.
“I have been creating funny comics since I was little, maybe 6-7 years old, so I have been making comics for about 20 years now,” Bonnie told Bored Panda. “I believe my first comic was a spin-off of Three Little Pigs. In it, they were running a restaurant, so the wolf would come to have some actual food instead of the pigs themselves. Throughout my school years, most of my comics had been fan comics of shows and movies that I loved, and around 2013 I began making original comics.”
“I had been creating a heartwarming-wholesome style cute drawings on Webtoons called Roar Street Journal for 3 years. I had a great time making it, but I wanted to try creating other comics as well. Coincidentally, my fiancé and I got engaged this year, so I thought it’s a good time to start a relationship comic.” And since Bonnie has been documenting their little moments in sketchbooks since they started dating, she had a lot of cute couple material to work with.
“In Roar Street Journal, even though all of the characters were animals, most had stories inspired by my personal experiences. But IT Guy & ART Girl rely on them 100%. Sometimes, however, I exaggerate things a bit to make the story funnier. So please, don’t believe that every story in the series had happened exactly the same way in real life, too!”
According to the cartoonist, the best thing about creating comics is having all of the creative freedom and being able to interact with the readers. “While I enjoy illustrating books and it supports my life, I still make comics even though they’re free. It’s a medium where I can freely share my values and thoughts, and connect with readers from all over the world.”
“When I started IT Guy & ART Girl, I thought no one would read it because there already had been so many great relationship comics out there,” she added. “I didn’t expect so many people would relate to the series and the fact that there are quite a lot of other IT guy and ART girl couples. Thank you, everyone, for reading!”
