Humor helps us learn far more about the world than if we were super serious all the time. Grab some facts and social insights, throw in a bunch of comedy, add a good dash of current events, mold everything into the shape of a meme, and you have something truly special.

That’s where the r/2westerneurope4u online community comes in. It’s a popular subreddit that encourages people to post memes about life in Western Europe. They encourage users to make and share ironic memes about the countries in the region, and they are absolutely hilarious. You’re bound to enjoy them whether you’re living in Europe or just went to visit the Old World on holiday. We’ve collected some of their funniest memes to share with you, Pandas, so scroll down to check them out.

We got in touch with the friendly team running r/2westerneurope4u. The head moderator, u/rex-ac, explained to Bored Panda that the subreddit is a "European oasis," shed some light on the community's "rough past," and how the members still have regular discussions about what countries should be added to the list of Western European ones. Read on for our interview with u/rex-ac.

Ever consider the reason why there's a 300 gap? Hard to invent anything when you're being occupied, murdered, and systematically genocided with famines.

I think the most interesting part was that the Irish invented chocolate milk in the 1680s.

Just saying. Researchers now believe the desire for a stable supply of alcohol could have motivated the beginnings of agriculture and non-nomadic civilization. It´s amazing we get any work done at all.

The head moderator, u/rex-ac, told Bored Panda about the community and its goals. "2westerneurope4u started about a year ago as a place to share ironic ultranationalistic memes. Before someone can participate in our subreddit, we require that the user chooses a 'country flair' and thereby aligns himself to a certain country or region within a country. Once a user chooses a flair, we encourage him to defend his country/region and talk smack about others."

According to the mod, the subreddit is "a place for European fun," even if it can sometimes seem like the opposite to an outside visitor. "Even if our users are 'insulting' each other, they are all in on the fun. We encourage insults to be clever/witty and not too hurtful," they explained.

Ballsy! One also can experience this in Cologne/Germany. The waiter (Köbes) is usually loud and cheeky and everyone loves it. Except one time ... I was drinking (as usual) and some businessmen walked in. One asked for the wine list but the Köbes said, that there is no wine list - there is only beer. He didn't even asked what kind of beer - he just asked how many. They sat down and had their beer. Minutes later two women walked in and asked for the wine list. He braught the wine list and waited patiently for the ladies to choose. Then he served the wine. Typically Köbes! 😉

Conversely, in Fontainebleau France, I went out for a "girls night" with 4 Brits and they're asking if I can tell which part of London they're from by their accent, and as I've never been to London England, I obviously can't tell the difference in their accents, or as Brits speaking to an American, what they're actually saying.

I was in Manchester just over a month ago (I'm from Canada, and I'm terrible at hearing the difference between the many different accents here haha), one of the train stops was a weird name that neither me or my Cornish boyfriend could pronounce correctly and we kept saying it wrong when we were reminding each other which stop to get off at, we literally had someone butt into our conversation to tell us we'll get death threats soon if we don't start pronouncing it right lmao. I just stopped speaking altogether hahaha, we laughed about it after. You get all sorts here.

The head mod was candid that r/2westerneurope4u has had a rough past. They revealed that the subreddit was started up by redditor u/prinsgezinde who "suddenly disappeared from the platform." That was when Reddit decided to close the community down for having no moderator.

"I was a user of the subreddit and missed the fun I was having here, so in November 2022, I requested to become a moderator for this subreddit to get it reopened again. My idea was to make 2westerneurope4u a 'European oasis' inside the American platform that is Reddit. I wanted to have a place where we could be edgy, talk about each other's positives and negatives, and generally have fun. A place where our European norms and values would come first," u/rex-ac shared their vision for the subreddit with Bored Panda.

"I think this 'European oasis' idea is one of the reasons why the sub is so successful. We now have a place within Reddit where all Europeans come together to make fun of each other, but where we will also band together if an outsider makes fun of us," the head mod explained what the dynamics of the group look like. What stands out as well is that r/2westerneurope4u has a sense of community that you'd be hard-pressed to find in many other subreddits.

The title was created in 1876 for Victoria. The rumour was she didn't like that her daughter had become the German Empress and therefor outranked her. Vicky wanted to be an Empress too. When she died the title went to her son, Edward VIII. Then it was passed to his son, George V (the guy in the photograph on the left). He was 'Emperor of India' between 1910 and 1936. .... Victoria was 'empress' in 1892, and George in 1922. The title was discontinued in 1947 with the independence of India.

WIND?! An EF3 would flip that hoses roof, and an EF4 would scatter the entire house over half of Europe. BTW, a Hurricane is also "wind", and wind speeds in an EF3 tornado are faster than those of a hurricane.

It is very curious how spanish people are thought to be lazy and going on party everyday, while the REALITY is turists getting to Spain to party hard, drink, sleep and enjoy the country while spaniards are the ones working non stop. Siesta is something only babies and old people do, not everybody. And shops don´t close at mid day because of siesta... people go home to have lunch. It is ridiculous how estereotipycal siesta has become.

Meanwhile, Bored Panda was incredibly interested to get to grips with how the subreddit itself defines what is and isn't a Western European country, keeping in mind that there are many different ways to classify the region.

"We are going by the list of countries that u/prinsgezinde [the original founder] made when he started the sub. The original list included the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Switzerland, and Austria. Over time, we have made some adjustments to add some nations that we feel belong on the list. The list now includes, for example, Gibraltar, Malta, Greenland, and other micronations that weren't in the original list," u/rex-ac explained that the list isn't set in stone.

"We have regular discussions about whether countries should be added to the list or not. Many Czechs, Croats, and Estonians have argued that their countries should be part of the sub, because they share the same Western European values that we all have. As of today, the Czechs and Croats haven't been able to convince the rest of the community to be added to our definition of Western Europe, but we do give them special treatment by giving them their own flairs so they can join in on the fun."

This naming methods are common. Only usually you just add "-zeug" ("stuff"). It flies? it's a "Flugzeug" ("flying stuff"). Can you play with it? then it's a "Spielzeug" ("playing stuff"). Can you work with it? You guess it: "Werkzeug" ("working stuff"). Can you drive it? It's a "Fahrzeug" ("driving stuff"). You bridle a horse with "Zaumzeug" ("bridling stuff"), the piece of salad on you steak is "Grünzeug" ("green stuff"), the bedding on your bed is "Bettzeug" ("bed stuff"). This list could go on endlessly.

The ‘2 Western Europe 4 U’ community is actually pretty new to the internet. It was founded just under a year ago, and will be celebrating its first birthday on April 9.

Over the past year, the subreddit has drawn in quite a big following. At the time of writing, the online group has just over 100k members, which the sub calls ‘trolls.’ Meanwhile, the members who are currently online are referred to as ‘Fr*nch users.’ (Yes, with the asterisk, joking that being French is something so shameful that the word ought to be censored).

The subreddit describes itself as a place for “ironic ultranationalistic memes about Western European countries.” The moderator team running the whole project points out that, “You will learn more about European culture here than anywhere else on Reddit.”

And they're not wrong about that. Humor helps us remember information far better because it activates our brain's reward system.

“Be proud of your country! Defend it with all your heart and play/fight along with all our battles. Please don’t be a hater though,” they encourage people to have fun on the sub while still remembering that any bickering about whose country is better is all done for show. It’s ironic play-acting for the sake of giggles, so don’t forget that while you’re enjoying the memes.

The r/2westerneurope4u subreddit defines Western Europe in their sidebar as comprising the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, the UK, Ireland, Denmark (including Greenland), Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Switzerland, Austria, Flanders, and Wallonia.

However, this isn’t the only way to look at the region. How you define Western Europe will depend on a range of factors, like geography and cultural values. There are slight differences in classification depending on what organization or political body you listen to.

So, for instance, the United Nations classifies Western Europe as being made up of Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. This isn’t how other organizations describe the region.

The CIA, for example, classifies the region of Western Europe as comprising Belgium, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

Andorra, Portugal, and Spain make up the Southwestern European region, according to the CIA.

Prague is a particularly pretty city. However, most European cities are walkable, and very pleasantly walkable. They have good public transport, and lots of parks. They have a greater population density, and there's lots of mixed use space. At the street level there might well be shops, businesses, hair dressers, supermarkets... they on the upper floors there's apartments.

I get the “joke” but let’s get real. A nice, panoramic shot of Prague versus a zoomed in shot of Columbus, Ohio. Not real fair. European and American cities were not built the same but that’s what you get when one had 900 years to develop while the other is just a shade over 200 years old and came to life during the Industrial Revolution.

You have your opinion, which has been heavily Protestant-ized. I grew up in those barren churches. Now I am Greek Orthodox. When I walk into the church and light my candle, every time I thank God for the beauty of the place. The high ceiling, the large, colorful icons. In Orthodoxy, it is meant to be heaven on earth, for that time of the liturgy. You think providing an ugly, bland space in which to worship God and honor Jesus is best. Weird.

France has the most tourists. But if you read the fine print, “tourist” qualifies as someone who stays for a couple days or stops driving a couple times. Most tourists are actually passing through to get to Portugal or somewhere.

Before you start booking your tickets and packing your suitcase, do some background research about the country’s history and culture. If you can, take the time to learn a few basic phrases that you could use to communicate with the locals. It’s easy to make friends when someone sees that you’re putting in the effort to respect their language and customs.

I know many people who only look for the cheapest and fast cooking foods. Some of them do appreciate good food, when they get it, but many really don't care and just want it to fill the stomach. But I think it is the case in many countries. Time and money decides not food quality.

Dutch is something in between English, German and Frisian (Frisian is the closest relative to the English language). We are basically speaking all those languages combined, but with a very strange accent and our own set of rules (Dutch).

"North Sea Germanic" is a sub-category of the West Germanic language family that includes Old-English, Old-Saxon, Old-Frisian and their descendants. Once upon a time English, the Frisian languages and Low Saxon were all dialects of the same language.

Absolutely off topic, my first time visiting my step-father's family in a tiny town on the border of the Netherlands - I went with the patriarch of the family ( I spoke only English, he only Flemish) to take care of a neighbor's farm. I am in my pajamas, no ID, no money. He pushes me into a truck with 2 men I don't know who spoke limited English. I thought they were driving me back to the house. But no, me, in my pajamas, went to a nuclear plant, watched huge ships coming into the harbor, was on a bird watching tower, was in a beautiful a forest, on a very rickety fishing boat and a bar. Since the patriarch didn't go back home, my mother was quite worried. Its now known in the family as the time X and Y kidnapped me in my pajamas. These men gave me my favorite memory of Europe ever.

The meme is about Europe. They aren’t being compared to the U.S., so our length of existence is irrelevant. Also, our history goes back far longer than 247 years. That’s just when we declared independence. Regardless, the “short” history compared to Europe is true of the entire Western Hemisphere. Nothing anyone can do about it and it’s rather ridiculous to use it as an insult. You going to drag Australia and New Zealand into this, too? They are younger than the U.S. No? There are plenty of things wrong in America, but dragging us into a discussion that has nothing to do with us (and insulting how long ago Europeans “discovered” the land) is just lame.

never mentioned by the brits : " The Battle of Patay, fought on 18 June 1429 during the Hundred Years' War. the horsemen of the French vanguard inflicted heavy casualties on an English army. A victory often credited to Joan of Arc, she was in fact not present for the battle as she had remained with the main body of the French army. The battle was a disastrous blow to English aspirations in France. Consequences : The virtual destruction of the English field army in central France and the loss of many of their principal veteran commanders." Mettre la Patay " is a french expression meaning " Kicking A** " . KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ! LOL

Interesting take. As a French who's lived in GB, I would say there is absolutely no specific hate towards the British, it's more of an old joke based on history than a fact. People have more issues with Germans, Dutch somehow, and Americans. For eg. there is no equivalent of UK tabloids "French bashing" in our media against the British, it simply does not exist. People are completely oblivious to what happens in GB, and tensions are more happening with our direct territorial neighbors.

Yeah, I volunteered to help migrants in France, and let me tell you we treat them like s**t. They have the right to be treated as human being, paper or not. And they are right to protest for it. Here the police harrass them, cut their tents, beat them. "No gathering policy" they call it. They are forbidden to work, even if they want to, we put them in "CRA" (basically prisons) without trial, we tell minor they are too old to benefit from school or help, etc... The title is missleading and make them look like Karens. The people I helped and pissed off by our government weren't Karens, they were enslaved in Libya, almost died many times during their journey, fleed political assassinations. All of that to be disposed of in a prison and then sent back to die in a plane.

Lots of negative comments on here about immigration and other comments we can't reply to because they've been down-voted so much. Countries such as France and Britain historically made a fortune by making empires, invading countries, taking natural resources. But when people from these countries come back to the "mother land" they're often viewed negatively. Bring on the down votes if necessary but people need to realise this is part of the legacy of empire, just one that is not in the favour on the the empire builders.

English is a germanic based language. My secret as an anglophone to understanding German, French, Italian and Spanish IS that I listen intently to the speaker in the foreign language as most of the vocabulary is the same but with accents on different syllables. Verbs and their tenses are the biggest issues, but if you are listening, you'll understand the implied meaning. Unfortunately, with German, you really have to listen closely as the verb modifier is in the beginning of the sentence, but the verb it modifies ends the sentence, so don't interrupt a German until they've finished.

10% is not even customary, it would be considered generous in Germany. Rule of thumb is 5-10%, and with a 700$ check you would defintitely tend to the lower percentage. Also, hanging around after a meal is absolutely normal here. The american unkindness of bringing the check immediately when you are finished eating would be considered very rude in most of Europe. This is the difference when you actually pay your waiters a living wage instead of making them dependent on tips.

Also if you look at this with per capita in mind, it's the Netherlands and Denmark who give the most, not Germany, and per capita, Poland is not even in the top five beneficiaries, it goes like this: Luxembourg, Lithuania, Hungary, Latvia, Estonia), so, I think it is a more fair view - there is simply a lot of Germans and a lot of Polish, these are big countries with a lot of people, and looking at per capita would be fairer.

I often found that latin does indeed have its advantages. No matter which country you are in, usually even in the smallest village you will find someone who speaks latin (most times it will be the village priest). Saved my neck more than one time in Poland or Slovakia.

The nice part thing about French being the standard is because it's so well "guarded". Don't get me wrong, I am pro-living breathing language, but if the French want to be standard bearer, let them.

I think the confusion comes because "the French" pretend nothing of the sort - you only have to see the respect that british veterans are/were held in in France. This is rightwing lying, misreporting and click bait.

The french lost 90k men guarding British arses as we ran. Dunkirk was no victory, it was an ignominious defeat that the French paid dearly for. The battle of Britain had not yet begun, the channel ports were defended because they allowed us a (very necessary) escape route, not out of kindness to the French. it is perfectly possible to honour our ancestors without denigrating our allies, especially those whose sacrifice enable us to live and fight another day.

THE REAL FACTS and the reason why I don't believe that this hate post is from British people : SIEGE OF LILLE : The German commander, General Alfred Wäger, allowed the French the honours of war; the garrison paraded through the Grand Place, as German troops stood to attention, a compliment for which Wäger was reprimanded by Hitler. Winston Churchill described the Allied defence of Lille as a "splendid contribution" that delayed the German advance for four days and allowed the escape of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk. William L. Shirer wrote in 1969 that the "gallant" defence of Lille "helped the beleaguered Anglo-French forces around the port to hold out for an additional two to three days and thus save at least 100,000 more troops"

THE REAL FACTS : SIEGE OF LIILE : The siege of Lille, or Lille pocket, (28–31 May 1940) took place during the Battle of France in the Second World War. french forces : 6 divisions 40,000 men 50 tanks. German forces : 4 infantry divisions, 3 panzer divisions, 160,000 men, 800 tanks. the French defence of Lille enabled the BEF and the rest of the First Army to retreat into the Dunkirk perimeter and in 2013, Douglas Fermer wrote that the Battle of Lille diverted about seven German divisions during the evacuation of Dunkirk.

THE REAL FACTS : BATTLE OF FRANCE : The British Expeditionary Force alone lost some 68,000 soldiers during the French campaign. German casualties are hard to determine but commonly accepted figures are: 27,074 killed, 111,034 wounded and 18,384 missing. 85,310 French military personnel were killed ; 12,000 were reported missing, 120,000 were wounded .

THE REAL FACTS : DUNKIRK : While more than 330,000 Allied troops were rescued, the British and French sustained heavy casualties and were forced to abandon nearly all their equipment. Around 16,000 French soldiers and 1,000 British soldiers died during the evacuation. 90% of Dunkirk was destroyed during the battle. Although Churchill had promised the French that the British would cover their escape, on the ground it was the French who held the line whilst the last remaining British soldiers were evacuated. Enduring concentrated German artillery fire and Luftwaffe strafing and bombs, the outnumbered French stood their ground. The resistance of Allied forces, especially the French forces, including the French 12th Motorised Infantry Division from the Fort des Dunes, had bought time for the evacuation of the bulk of the troops. The Wehrmacht captured some 35,000 soldiers, almost all of them French. These men had protected the evacuation until the last moment and were unable to embark.
