American author Nathaniel Hawthorne once said: "Time flies over us, but leaves its shadow behind." Let's explore that tail, shall we? It's not an easy task, but Bored Panda put together a list of photos that capture this elusive silhouette quite well.

From a meatball that has spent decades in epoxy to 1,800-year-old Roman leather sandals, the things you're going to see below have all faced the biggest battle in the universe — the passage of time — but took different wounds. Continue scrolling to compare them and if you want more of the same, fire up our similar publications here, here, and here.

If the manufacturer offers a lifetime warranty, it doesn't matter how or where you got it. Kingston offers a lifetime warranty on their computer memory modules. They replaced memory modules from donated computers and laptops after I applied for RMA.

Once the outer "skin" of the brick is pierced, bricks are quite soft. Its only the outer cm of a brick that is hard and waterproof, the rest is dried mud. Mortar is effectively concrete.

Do you reckon there's a correlation between handedness and approaching a step? I never thought about this but next time I go over a step or a flight of steps I'll be mindful whether my right foot goes first or not (I'm right handed) haha

I think it may be rubber 'soft fall' made from old tyres usually. We get that a lot in newer playgrounds in Australia. Otherwise we have tanbark (mulch) which is also softer to fall on but you can't walk over barefoot as easily :) It was only when I read your comment that I remembered that they used to use sand here too, until maybe the 80s/90s

Oh man, did you guys hear about the journalist who found an apple when returning to the office, and ATE it? It wasn't even hers, she doesn't know what happened to it BEFORE being in an empty building for a year. Then it sat rotting for a year... and she got some friends and they all ate it together. The questions were all about texture and taste... none of the other journalists even bothered to ask her WHY.

There was a time, in the ‘50s and ‘60s, when a lot of beautiful architectural features were covered up with paint, crap linoleum, and awful drop ceilings, and entire historic buildings razed—-in favor of putting up the bland concrete box buildings we all hate in their place. They thought it was progressive and futuristic, when it was actually just fugly.

That is NOT biodegrading. Biodegrading would mean it would decompose and essentially turn into dirt. This is simple degradation, so the plastic bits are getting smaller and smaller, but still plastic bits. This is a BAD thing, not a good thing.

Just make sure the wiring is safe. I have old lamps and other electric stuff too, and have had to replace sketchy antique wiring that looked like reliable firestarters myself.

My first reaction was men are taller so naturally push on the door higher than the positioned "plate". Then I re read the title and sadly realised that females are still grossly under represented in most engineering departments.

@Andrew- OR, they (women) are cleaner than their male counterparts and actually use the "handle area" to push the door open? ....Nope! I side with you on this one! Your comment is sad but true.

I agree with you all that this is MOST LIKELY because there are more men than women. Could it also not be that it's because people are more commonly right handed, so the women's washroom allows them to easily use their right hand to push open on the plate, where the men's is worn out beside the plate because it's awkward to reach across your body to push directly on the plate?

Hey..at least there was a women's restroom. My sister was the first woman to take HVAC classes at her technical college. If that wasn't proof that HVAC is mostly a male populated career, the fact that she had to go across campus to find a women's restroom between classes should have been a clue.

Interesting that this pic is causing so much stir. Bobert Robertson makes a good point. Most people are right handed, so the women’s bathroom door protector is in a better place than the men’s bathroom door protector. Second, yes the engineering field is mostly men, but that is simply due to less women applying for engineering degrees. It has nothing to do with gender bias so can we stop getting upset about this? Less women engineering applicants = fewer women graduating as engineers. Simple math. It has nothing to do with ability or some sort of gender bias. Should we tack on the % of men who fail to get their engineering degree? It’s a very difficult degree for anyone to earn. Also, there are fields dominated by women (healthcare, education), so let’s ease up on assumptions that there are biases happening that are preventing women from becoming engineers just because of this picture. We all have the same opportunities if we are determined enough.

Your point about gender bias I think is an incorrect analysis of the issue. Are universities not accepting female engineering applicants, No quite the opposite. Infact due to the imbalance I believe female applicants may have a slight advantage over male applicants if there is a surplus of engineering applicants. The gender bias starts long before university applications begin. It is a societal bias. I wouldn't necessarily expect females to ever outnumber male applicants but I believe it should be far higher than it is today.

Seriously, some of those can be worth a lot of money. Some collectors compete to have the lowest graded set of coins, and if it is a modern coin still with the date and mintmark in that condition they can be worth a lot. I know it sounds dumb, but the owner should make sure to get these valued.

Depends on the type of bacteria around when it was encased in epoxy, there's two types aerobic and anaerobic, need oxygen and doesn't need oxygen. Also, the decay may have been short lived because epoxy tends to heat up which may have helped cook off some of the bacteria and when they ran out of oxygen or poisoned themselves it would have halted the process.

As for the reason why, taken verbatim from OP at reddit "As a retiree, my grandfather worked for a small town grocery making Swedish meatballs. At some point in 1990 or 1991 he decided to encase one in epoxy. It's been passed around the family as a gag gift ever since, and I just re-discovered it visiting family last weekend. I'm kind of amazed it hasn't turned green by now."

I have a+25 year old unopened Miller Lite bottle with a Coors Light cap. Came out of the case like that at a bar I worked at. I bought it immediately. Someone offered me $20 for it. No idea if it's worth anything but it's a funny conversation piece.

Hundreds of old cars like this in Hawaii. They have no place to put them, and apparently nobody cares. In some areas, they are just stacked on both sides of a road. They need to clean it up and get those cars out of there instead of ignoring them.

That's by design, so you buy another one. They can actually be revived most of the time. Take the screws out, remove the rotor from the motor and clean up the bearing surfaces with steel wool, oil with a light machine oil and reassemble. I've saved a number of fans from the trash that way.

Folks, this is why, if you absolutely must attach something to a tree, use screws. As the trunk increases in diameter, you can just unscrew the screws a bit, keeping whatever it is on the surface of the trunk.

    Memere

Mainly because a pack of frozen peas (or corn) is much cheaper than an actual ice pack, especially if you buy a generic brand. Sometimes the bag of peas also conforms better to your body, and can also be refrozen as long as the bag stays intact. I'm cheap enough to put that 'holey' bag into a ziploc freezer bag & keep using it!

Put the old one in a pillow case and close it with a tie-wrap. Wash on low temperature (max 40C°) and add fabric softener. Then put it in the wash dryer. The pillow case will protect the plush. With a very fine comb you can get the plushie almost as new ;-)

Yeah, stuff that is salty, loses a lot of water while being cooked, and subsequently kept away from moisture will do this. Maccas goes green just fine if you're not having it dry out to make a bull point about it.

This is so hateful and shaming and twisted. Can you imagine being a kid who is overweight, or being a teen patient with body image issues, or a parent trying to adjust to their post-partum body, and being confronted with THIS at the pediatrician's office? The holier-than-thou condescending meanness of it is just so totally unnecessary, especially in a setting that's supposed to feel safe and respectful so people can be open about sensitive topics. McDonald's is perfectly fine if you have it every so often as part of a varied flexible diet and as part of a lifestyle that includes movement and general self-care. And not everyone has the financial freedom or the nutrition education to care for their bodies as they should have the right to do. Food injustice is very real.

Having the fat Ronald McDonald clown is unnecessary. Showing the food intact is sending the message that it has too many preservatives to eat frequently, and that's enough to get their point across. Why heap on the fat clown to imply eating fast food is going to make you fat, too?

I don't think that's patina, that's Damascus steel. Patina is something else altogether. It is the oxidisation on the surface of a metal resulting in a browning or greening or aged look on the surface of the object.

Reminds me of used college textbooks. Half of the first chapter pages are yellow. Last half of the book never has ANY highlighting in it. :)

Usually orthodontists are reluctant to make them for kids, because they mess with the growth of the jaws. They act just like braces.

They are not "well worn", they are destroyed by a lack of maintenance.

No. The filter tissue gets clogged with micro particles. You could wash the old one and it would look like new, but in reality the airflow through that filter would be minimal so it also wouldn't really filter the air.

My most comfortable winter socks for the house have small holes by now... but they have foxes in Santa hats, so obviously I cannot get rid of them.

You could patch them, or learn darning! Darning is fun, and if you use different colored threads, it'd make the socks more colorful!
