It’s said that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. And it only takes a visit to a secondhand store to see just how true this really is. I remember once going to a book tent at a carnival and picking up loads of great reads. It was only when I got home and started paging through them that I realized one of the books (a collection of Madiba quotes) had been autographed by none other than the man himself, South Africa's late president Nelson Mandela. It cost me the equivalent of 11 cents. Yes, Really.

Thrifting is literally a cheap thrill. It can even get a bit addictive rummaging through someone else’s “junk” to hit the jackpot. But it isn’t just good for your pocket, it helps save the planet, too, by reducing waste and cutting back on your carbon footprint.

There's a hugely popular online community called Thrift Store Hauls. It has an incredible 4 million members. They love garage sales, flea markets, pawn shops, thrift stores, and more. They've been sharing their best secondhand finds, and we must admit, we’re just a little jealous. Bored Panda has put together an inspiring list of the top times people won gold in the thrifting Olympics. From a $6 red velvet kitty couch to a $10 SMEG toaster, some of these treasures might make you want to drop what you're doing and run to the nearest secondhand store.

It's obvious that the poster couldn't wait to have her darling cat try out the new furniture because the other shopping bags have been dumped on the floor. That's a great find and I would do exactly the same thing.

Thrifting has become wildly popular in recent years, especially among the younger generations. People are buying more consciously, and secondhand stores are the place to be when it comes to sustainable fashion.

There might have been a stigma attached to buying second-hand clothes a few decades ago. It was seen as "less-than." But nowadays, thrifters are considered cool, socially conscious, and fashion-forward. For some, it’s more than just shopping… It’s a lifestyle.

Bought our 13 year old daughter a purse for Christmas at a Big Box Store. She unwrapped it and later that day was filling it up when she said, "Mom, there's money in here." I heard change jingle and figured someone dumped some pocket change in. There was over $600 in that bag- and odd mix of bills and change. No explanation. It had tags on it and was still stuffed with the paper they put in them for shape.

This is actually quite sad. I know people are talking about keeping it, but typically when something like this happens, it's because an elderly person has been put in a nursing home, or passed away, and their family is selling their furniture. It's not uncommon for older people, especially those with dementia or alzheimers, to hide money away in furniture from a distrust of banks. If you EVER find something like this, try contacting the thrift store (or yard sale) and ask if they can put you in contact with whoever sold the furniture originally. It's the right thing to do to return it.

Thrifting goes hand-in-hand with sustainable living, say the environmentalists at the University of Colorado Boulder. And there are several reasons why buying secondhand goods is good for the planet.

“Most clothes are made from synthetic materials, which take hundreds of years to decompose in landfills,” reads the university’s site. “When you thrift, you help extend the life of clothes, which can reduce the volume of clothing sent to landfills each year.”

According to the activist group Greenpeace, 1.92 million tonnes of textile waste is produced every year. And a staggering 92 million tonnes of discarded garments find their way into dumps around the world—out of the 100 billion produced annually.

We have estate sales here and it is amazing what you can get from them. Found a chair with a cow hide seat and hand carved hooves. Nice chair, but uncomfortable. Still had its tag under the chair. Turns out it was made by a high end designer in Los Angeles in the 1960s. I'm using it as a tv stand. Also got some cute little rock sculptures made by kindergartners for $1.50. Figured they were made for grandpa and they should be carried on.

The clothing industry—especially fast fashion—and its consumers also contribute to wasted resources. Making clothes takes a whole lot of water. Like, a lot of water. According to the University of Colorado, one pair of jeans is estimated to consume about 1,800 gallons of water during the manufacturing process and the cotton growth stage. Greenpeace adds that 2 billion pairs of jeans are produced every year.

Meanwhile, that t-shirt you're wearing probably took around 700 gallons of water to produce. To put it into perspective, that's the amount of water an average person drinks over the course of 900 days.

I would think by now the lacy trim would be deteriorating or at least yellowed and almost brown, plus the black material would be fading to brown in spots where the dye job was weak, and have small tears in the weaker threaded areas of the cloth. So my guess is a very well-researched reproduction, maybe a costume made for a relatively recent stage production. I could be wrong. Also, take what the salesperson at the thrift store says about a piece of vintage clothing’s age, unless they’re a verified expert in vintage clothing (and since most are merely volunteers, their info can be sketchy). I had one try to tell me a particular dropped waist dress was from the 1920s. It was not only in suspiciously perfect shape for a nearly 70 year old party dress (this was in the 1990s), it was also made of polyester, so not the 1920s, and dropped waist dresses were popular in both the 1960s and 1980s. The 1960s were the decade when polyester cloth was getting to be almost comfortable (it was itchy, didn’t keep you warm in winter, and was a damned blanket on hot summer days), and it didn’t wrinkle, so polyester clothing started being mass produced. I know this because I wore both dropped waist dresses and polyester clothing in both decades (as a child in the sixties and a young adult in the eighties). Had I not known that, I might’ve believed this mid-sixties dropped waist dress had been worn by a flapper back in the Roaring Twenties. Good idea to do some homework before shopping for vintage clothing.

I 100% guarantee that is haunted. You'll wake up on day and it'll be draped over your sofa. You'll put it away but then it'll suddenly be back in it's favourite spot. Then one day you'll dream that the dress was hovering over you on the bed. Blood will drip from the neck line and arms and it will slowly descend until it covers you in it's icy caress. Then you'll wake up and realise you are wearing the dress and your family were butchered during the night. Hopefully not because this is an epic dress!

Studies have shown that many people don't keep the same clothes in the cupboard for more than a year. And one study found that a lot of garments are chucked out after no more than 10 wearings.

“Thrifting keeps clothing in use for longer, which can help limit wasted resources through decreased demand for new products,” say the university's experts. The Geneva Environment Network adds that the fashion industry is the second-biggest consumer of water and is responsible for 2-8% of global carbon emissions.

I have a pigskin jacket I'm holding onto even though my shoulders are really too broad for it now, because it looks so good and the quality is great. I bought it second hand for about $20. I probably should just give in and admit it deserves to be with someone who can wear it. Might see if my mum wants it because she is smaller than me.

'Waste not, want not' is a good rule to live by. "In today’s society of consumerism, people often buy things without realizing they don’t really need them, and with items that are cheap and accessible people tend to throw them away," notes Goodwill International.

"To help lessen the impact that this has on the environment, you can choose to donate things instead of tossing them and consider looking for an item secondhand next time you need something."

Get a fabric shaver for any pills (the little round nubby things, not sure it's the correct spelling for that meaning but..) you might get from washing and as Cool crow said, lay flat to dry. After it's completely dry you can tumble it on low heat with clean laundry only tennis balls for 10-15 min and that will take that stiff crunchy feeling away. If you find that not enough wet and ring out a dryer sheet and add that to the dryer with tennis balls and tumble on medium heat for no more than 15 min.

This, My Friends, Is Why I Drive 45 Minutes To The Rich People Goodwill

A Dyson vacuum cleaner found while thrifting, partially wrapped in plastic in a store aisle.

The thrift gods smiled upon me. I found a Dyson V8 Animal stick vacuum in a bin waiting to be unloaded at Goodwill…for 20 bucks. I feel like I’ve gotten away with a crime!

Got home and tested it, and it works great. There was some debris stuck in the vacuum head, mainly pine needles, which makes me think someone vacuumed up their Christmas tree debris, clogged up the head, and then assumed the vacuum was no longer working, so they took it to Goodwill and got a new one. Welp, my cat and I are endlessly grateful!

These were everywhere in the 1980s. Funny that. Something that was in everyone’s apartment and house, at least every young person’s home, and was so massively mass produced only 40 years ago, and now you only find one once in a while at a thrift shop. I suppose most of them ended up breaking when people moved, or they threw them out for some reason (redecorating, updating lighting fixtures, simply can’t stand the sight of them anymore, etc) at some point, and they’re now buried deep in the 1990s or 2000s layer of landfills across the country.

There's a couple issues with the design of that thing. 1) The cord is a bit too stiff where it goes into the plastic housing of the hair dryer, meaning unless you pay real close attention to how you handle and store the thing, it's very possible for the cord to break, or disconnect from the internal electronics. 2) If that happens, the thing is damn near impossible to repair, lots of plastic clips and glue, so even if you manage to take it apart without breaking any of those clips getting it put back together without breaking any of them (or anything else) is almost blind luck. Worth it at $5, but not worth replacing at full price.

Broyhill is a very good brand. I can't believe you got it for $35, the people in that store had no idea of what they had.

I think the size is a big issue. Most people who shop thrift stores don't have huge houses with formal dining rooms, so they probably don't have room. OP got lucky!

Broyhill will last forever if you care for it properly. We had a really heavy one in our kitchen that had a leaf for the middle to extend it and chairs that came with it. If we weren't all eating at the same time, Mom could take the leaf out to give us more room in the kitchen. We could have 7-11 people packed like sardines around one of those tables.

Our local Goodwill is so very proud of their items. I can buy stuff from Walmart, or anywhere else, for less than Goodwill's prices. This set would probably be a couple hundred here at Goodwill. Still worth it probably, but I wouldn't pay it.

My Niece was new at her job and was only able to take a day off for a courthouse wedding. They couldn't afford to do anything, since money was so tight even with me helping them out. It took forever for both to get the same days off and build enough PTO to take anything close to a vacation. So, I surprised them with a week long stay at a Fancy hotel downtown. They got the full package, Honeymoon Suite with room service included, spa treatments, hotel restaurants, boutique and a $1000 Visa gift card to use anywhere that they wanted. I've always preferred to do Staycations. My "Slush Fund" had built up over time and I decided to use it for them instead, since I wasn't strapped for cash and my emergency funds was stacked up. I helped raise my Niece and she was the closest thing that I had to a daughter, so I would pretty much do anything that I could for her. The relationship that we have now is completely f****d up, which sucks and hurts like hell.

One of my favorite things to do (because I was not a normal child) was take the impression/rubbing of only one half of the body... and draw in my own weird stuff for the other half XD So there were a lot of pretty ladies' skirts/dress lower halves with weird neon dog heads drawn on top, or dragons XD I would also do a rubbing of the head/torso of the human and draw in bizarre centaur bodies. Just one more way that I was the despair of my mother for not being a typical girl child XD

Not really. That's an orange gun NES, so it's from after 1989, when a US law required all toy guns to have obvious colors (orange being the most common) on them to mark them as toys. The more valuable NES console sets are the ones from before 89, when the zapper/gun was gray. Also, the games with that set aren't rare, though a black box hogan's alley and black box tennis are worth about twenty bucks each in the box, given the overall condition we see.

My grandmother had one of the originals from 1928, her siblings used it, than it went to my grandmother during her first (failed) pregnancy in 1947, eventually using it with my mom when she was born in 1950 and used for each of her 5 siblings then it went to my mom when i was born in 1983, then it was passed between two of my aunts when their kids were born, my younger cousin got it when her daughter was born in 2014 (second daughter in 2018) my other cousins wife just had a baby...two days ago, and they already posted pictures with the kid in the thing.

Saranac Lake NY is your best be for loons. N NH and N Maine is your best bet on moose, but I will warn you, the locals in those two do not like animal tourists. Just be careful and respectful. I lived up in N NY and traveled those parts. Also, bring a high caliber gun because they have bears who are tyring to fatten up and you will get in their way. Hope you can climb a tree.

We see and hear loons whenever we go camping . (We live in British Columbia and camp at lots of different lakes). From our kayak we often see a loon swimming with babies. I've never heard of them being shot--I think they are a protected species. Our friends ,who we sometimes camp with, fish. Sometimes a loon will follow them and snatch any fish they catch.

Thrifted My First Authentic Louis Vuitton For $5! Gifting To My Beautiful Wife

Person holding a designer handbag found while thrifting, with a skeleton and Halloween decor in the background.

I thrifted this Louis Vuitton Speedy 35 (June, 2005) at my local thrift store for $5. It only took me 3 years of constant thrifting to finally find one 😭
I normally assume all LV products are fake but inspect them anyway in order to learn what fakes look like but this bag felt and looked entirely different from bags I have handled before. I have never purchased a fake Louis bag before but decided to take a chance on this.
I am super glad I took the chance because I had it authenticated and it passed 😍
