How do you define 'interesting'? What is interesting? After writing a surplus of articles about interesting facts and mildly interesting stuff, we can tell you that it's all about gut feeling. Humans know humans, just like we know that we will never be tired of looking at previously unseen, fluffy animals from exotic corners of the Earth.
Today's r/interesting, then, is a rather normal cousin to 'Mildly Interesting'. Not bound by a specific timeline or subject matter, this community describes itself as "a place to share something interesting." And as you'll see on today's list, it sure does that, bringing bite-size infotainment like a cooler version of 'Encyclopedia Britannica' where people vote on what's hot and what's, well, less interesting. Buckle up, pandas, because it's going to get interesting!

My first job out of school, a guy, three times my age, that I worked with (a very interesting, smart guy) asked if I believed in this, "Tectonic Plate theory thing". He had simply never been taught about them. 20 years later, on a Photographic Expedition, I come to find out that there are a LOT more than the seven Tectonic Plates I was taught about, in my own school days.
How I used to have to wait till I got to the library in order to research ANYTHING. Didn't have the world's entire knowledge in my pocket.... and survived.
To be fair about it, using only internet resources to research many topics is a huge mistake, Book publishers are always very careful to print accurate information. Getting a reputation for printing sketchy information would put them out of business. Furthermore, there is so much information in books pre-digital that the chance of all books being entered on the internet is exceedingly slim. Finally, a lot of information is regional or local, meaning 99.999999% of the world population has no interest in it, but that tiny fraction of the population who would treasure that information would never get to see it if the books all disappeared and it didn't make it to digital.

In the early 1980s, at the dawn of the age of the personal computer, people were afraid of the darn machines. 'Computerphobia' was spreading like wildfire. And the idea that one day we'd all be chronically obsessed with computers, in as much with the internet, seemed as ridiculous as having all tomes of Encyclopedia Britannica and much more at the tip of your finger.
Today, however, we'd be pretty much lost without going online. According to one study, more than half of Americans admit to learning most of what they know thanks to the internet. When the pandemic happened and we were all collectively locked inside our homes, God knows how bad things could have gotten if not for the ability to have online classrooms.

BP, you reached a real low with this entry. The title looks like a 4 year old’s birthday party invitation that their parents put an eye roll emoji on to amuse the other parents. This is a woman who accomplished 100 times what the rest of us could only dream of doing. She was in high school at age 10, ffs. The average age of a 9th grader is 14 or 15, add another year for a 10th grader (back in the day, before the middle school thing, after elementary school you went to junior high for 7th, 8th, and 9th grades, so didn’t start high school until 10th grade). She would’ve graduated high school at 13 or 14, and if they let her go right to college, she would’ve had her Bachelors by18, when most people are graduating high school, and already started Grad School when other kids in her age group were nothing more than incoming freshmen. She probably had to fight hard to take the classes for her field, as they were full of men who wouldn’t like a woman, especially a genius like her, as competition. Same thing entering her field. The guys probably kept trying to turn her into their secretary. I won’t even go into all the sexual harassment she no doubt had to face. But she did it, and earned the high respect of NASA and all the astronauts and engineers there. I doubt you advanced that far in school, BP, so have some f*****g respect for Katherine G Johnson.
" When NASA began to use computers" this not correct, should read electronic machines as computers. Because before the machines they had rooms full of women doing the calculations, and they were called computers.
She has an incredible story. I'm glad she has become more widely known due to the film hidden figures.
There is a movie about her and the other incredibly intelligent woman that worked for NASA, called Hidden Figures! It's one of my absolute FAVORITE movies!
That might be an interesting one, thank you! :)

"You can learn anything on the internet, so why do I so often learn things I don’t want to know?" Daniel T. Willingham, author of 'Outsmart Your Brain,' ponders in his article. It's a valid question, particularly when we consider just how much information we are constantly bombarded with.
According to the latest estimates, 328.77 million terabytes of data are pumped into the web each day. Of course, it's not clear how much of it is new information unseen on the net before. But what exactly drives us to seek information which may not be necessary or actively sought after? There's no one simple explanation, Daniel Willingham, a Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia and the author of 'Outsmart Your Brain,' explained to Bored Panda.
"Curiosity is a desire to gain more information," he said. "We expect ourselves to be curious about things that are either a topic that's interesting or have some utility for us in the long term." Let's say, for example, that you're an ardent stamp collector and stumble upon a conversation where someone claims to possess intriguing insights about the World War II postage stamps that graced France. Your initial reaction? Nonchalance. Why? "You would not feel any curiosity exactly because you feel like you already know pretty much everything, even though it's of great interest to you," Willingham argued.
Now, let's flip the script. Imagine a scenario where someone, unaware of your stamp-collecting prowess, suggests sharing the very knowledge you hold dear. They entice you with the prospect of uncovering a treasure trove of information, as you stand on the precipice of ignorance. Curious, right?
Well, not quite, it turns out. "You wouldn't feel any curiosity [in the subject] because the information wouldn't feel meaningful to you," he explained. "In order for information to feel meaningful, you have to have something to connect it to."

It's this very notion that subreddits like r/interesting thrive upon, constantly offering users a stream of captivating tidbits. However, this is why traditional educational institutions often struggle to evoke a sense of curiosity in students.
"It's so difficult for teachers to make children feel curious about school content because some of them already know it. A lot of them don't know anything at all about it, so they can't connect with anything." Unlike the boundless realm of the internet, where we have the freedom to indulge our curiosity by delving deep into topics that pique our interest, the educational system presents a different reality.
In school, we are bound to follow a structured curriculum that encompasses a wide range of subjects. We don't have the luxury of cherry-picking only the areas that intrigue us. Instead, we must navigate the entire breadth of the curriculum.

Recent statistics show that 1-in-5 Americans admit to feeling overloaded by information - a phenomenon that runs counter to the very essence of curiosity. "There should always be something that we're eager to learn about or at least enjoy. And if we're not, we don't see why we should be bored, right?"

Topography Of USA - Pretty Cool
It's crazy seeing how tall the western U.S. is. I've been to the tallest natural point in Wisconsin, Tim's Hill, and it doesn't even compare to being in the mountains.

Considering that it could really help babies born prematurely, maybe we should?
Load More Replies...As someone who have lost several kids in the womb, this is a miracle. Hopefully, if the cord is big enough to attach, this can save much more premature kids then today, maybe down to week 10-12.
I did a research: The lambs didn’t grow in the bags from conception; they were taken from their mothers’ wombs by caesarean section, then submerged in the Biobag, at a gestational age equivalent to 23-24 weeks in humans. 🤮
Which means that if a baby is being born prematurely because they'll definitely die otherwise, they can be put "back" into a womb to finish growing. That could be incredible. Thank you for the the clarification - they aren't just growing entire embryos from scratch in there. That would be a bit more freaky, although I can't fully explain why I feel that way

Every year 30 000 American babies are born prematurely at 26 weeks or younger and as soon as they take their first breath, their lungs stop developing and as a result they suffer long term health problems. Autopsies of these lambs later showed that their organs developed properly.

That's not his last words. He said this when he was condemned, but he was executed the next day. He is also known for taking a long time to dictate his will and making everybody at his execution wait for 4 hours.
Me being a martyr: Mhm, yep, your essay on why you hate me and want me dead has quite a few mistakes in it. For instance, your second point needs to be more connected to your thesis statement, it strayed a little bit. Secondly, you have a never ending amount of comma splices AND run-on sentences… I suggest you refresh yourself on proper grammar rules and revisit your punctuation. Lastly, the f word is used far too much as a filler. I suggest using substitutions or completely omitting it, as the sentences would read just as well, if not better, without them. Otherwise, it’s only a rough draft, and I’m sure you’re aware of some obvious ways to improve it for your second draft. Good work for the first draft though!
Once received an email at work from a boss, complaining that our office was making too many mistakes. We counted twelve mistakes in her email.

"Amazingly"? It's of cool, of course, that these days we are able to make such pictures and can really *see* how well theory and reality match up - but it's not like this is a lucky accident! Lot's of lab work and analysis was done to determine the arrangement of atoms in a molecule. You needed the background knowledge to interpret them (and the creative inspiration - it took scientists a while to come up with the ring form of benzol)... but the data were there.
Aren't we seeing individual atoms in these molecules? If so, this is incredibly!

Nice try, but Great Britain countered by 1. encouraging an Industrial Revolution not fully controlled by the political elites as was done in France and 2. when that created a population explosion of desperate poor, they made the most trivial crimes punishable by death…. with sentences commuted to transportation to the colonies. by 1759, millions of British Americans took the continent from ten thousand Frenchmen and their native allies
I wonder how many died of malaria; it was endemic in Louisiana back then
So England sent its prisoners to Australia, France sent them to America. That explains a lot.
Great Britain sent them to America, especially Virgina, too. France sent “nice” young women (voluntarily) to Quebec; and “bad” women and jailbird men to malarial Louisiana. In the next century, France would send its undesirables to even worse Guiana. One oddball theory holds that Brits were willing to emigrate because you can brew beer pretty much anywhere, while wine; good, drinkable wine, could only be produced in France. Life elsewhere was not worth living.

My High School Was Designed By A Guy Who Designs Prisons
Every h.s. classroom needs to have windows or you'll have millions of tween/tween claustrophobics. There's no other way to build a big school or prison than like this so every room gets a window. Otherwise, you need more land & build separate buildings, separate entrances, more security staff & equipment [cameras, tape, monitors, computers to view & database room to store]. More land requires more gardeners, landscapers, lawnmowers & ppl to water lawns & pull weeds & worms, perhaps plant flowers, trees, bushes (& trim)...See why it's cheaper & more compact to build just 1 bldg?
That makes sense to me. I used to live in a flat where the bathroom had no window, and I was terrified the light-bulb would blow while I was in the bath, leaving me in pitch darkness. Based on the state's modeling for future years, officials expect electric vehicles by 2035 will account for only about 10% of the total system hour load. The electric cars are NOT what is straining our grid. In 2022 EVs only accounted for about 1% of the power drain.

Luckily, he managed to shoot him before he got within slashing/stabbing range. Nevertheless, not a pleasant experience. (He never could workout why the Japanese soldier didn't use the element of surprise and just shoot him before he could shoot back)
maybe he wanted to give your Grandfather the opportunity to shoot him, my Dad served in Guam during WW2 and he was so thankful that he didn't have to kill anyone, he said he didn't think he could if the opportunity arose. It's possible death was preferable to killing to the Japanese soldier.

Yes, the stairs were built first and then they needed to add a wheelchair ramp which reduced the space available for the stairs, and it was cheaper to just make the new handrail further along than remove the end portion of the steps.
That's a h*ll of a steep ramp for a chair. And the rails look too high for pulling oneself up. This setup would be a nightmare. Useless and aesthetically odd as f*ck.

Nobody seems to have understood what "PandaGoPanda" said, Additionally, the ramp may also need a handrail, so they "elegantly" joined the two handrails...
I was confused because we can't see enough of the proper flight of stairs, maybe that confused other people as well.

Just in case America decides it wants to invade again, the nation is ready
Because Bored Panda has a capital letter at the start of each word - even if it's not a work but initials - before seeing the photo I read the heading as "AKS" (as in yaks). I'm like, I wonder what Aks are?
Yes, me too. Also because I'm not very familiar with the names of weapons.

This was a propaganda map produced to show what the US might end up looking like if they didn't enter WW1 against the Germans. Basically portraying America as part of a global German Empire.
And yet, during WW1 Japan was on the Allied side...

I Got A 2017, $2 Bill In My Tips!
A 2017 $2 bill is worth about $2.00. "The common misconception that the $2 note is no longer being produced also remains, though $2 notes have been printed since 1862, except for a 10-year hiatus between 1966 and 1976. The U.S. Treasury reports that $1,549,052,714 worth of $2 bills were in circulation worldwide as of April 30, 2007 - Wikipedia Note: 3 billion dollars worth of $2-bills in circulation in 2022 according to the Federal Reserve.
They even print Christmas themed $2 bills before the holidays.
Load More Replies...They are quite uncommon. Nearly all the $2 bills I have ever seen were in birthday or Christmas cards from relatives when I was a child.
