How do you define 'interesting'? What is interesting? After writing a surplus of articles about interesting facts and mildly interesting stuff, we can tell you that it's all about gut feeling. Humans know humans, just like we know that we will never be tired of looking at previously unseen, fluffy animals from exotic corners of the Earth.

Today's r/interesting, then, is a rather normal cousin to 'Mildly Interesting'. Not bound by a specific timeline or subject matter, this community describes itself as "a place to share something interesting." And as you'll see on today's list, it sure does that, bringing bite-size infotainment like a cooler version of 'Encyclopedia Britannica' where people vote on what's hot and what's, well, less interesting. Buckle up, pandas, because it's going to get interesting!

The Half-life of Facts. It's one of the reasons Doctors, and Surgeons have to keep learning. What they were taught, gets surpassed, or even disproven. My first job out of school, a guy, three times my age, that I worked with (a very interesting, smart guy) asked if I believed in this, "Tectonic Plate theory thing". He had simply never been taught about them. 20 years later, on a Photographic Expedition, I come to find out that there are a LOT more than the seven Tectonic Plates I was taught about, in my own school days.

To be fair about it, using only internet resources to research many topics is a huge mistake, Book publishers are always very careful to print accurate information. Getting a reputation for printing sketchy information would put them out of business. Furthermore, there is so much information in books pre-digital that the chance of all books being entered on the internet is exceedingly slim. Finally, a lot of information is regional or local, meaning 99.999999% of the world population has no interest in it, but that tiny fraction of the population who would treasure that information would never get to see it if the books all disappeared and it didn't make it to digital.

In the early 1980s, at the dawn of the age of the personal computer, people were afraid of the darn machines. 'Computerphobia' was spreading like wildfire. And the idea that one day we'd all be chronically obsessed with computers, in as much with the internet, seemed as ridiculous as having all tomes of Encyclopedia Britannica and much more at the tip of your finger.

Today, however, we'd be pretty much lost without going online. According to one study, more than half of Americans admit to learning most of what they know thanks to the internet. When the pandemic happened and we were all collectively locked inside our homes, God knows how bad things could have gotten if not for the ability to have online classrooms.

BP, you reached a real low with this entry. The title looks like a 4 year old’s birthday party invitation that their parents put an eye roll emoji on to amuse the other parents. This is a woman who accomplished 100 times what the rest of us could only dream of doing. She was in high school at age 10, ffs. The average age of a 9th grader is 14 or 15, add another year for a 10th grader (back in the day, before the middle school thing, after elementary school you went to junior high for 7th, 8th, and 9th grades, so didn’t start high school until 10th grade). She would’ve graduated high school at 13 or 14, and if they let her go right to college, she would’ve had her Bachelors by18, when most people are graduating high school, and already started Grad School when other kids in her age group were nothing more than incoming freshmen. She probably had to fight hard to take the classes for her field, as they were full of men who wouldn’t like a woman, especially a genius like her, as competition. Same thing entering her field. The guys probably kept trying to turn her into their secretary. I won’t even go into all the sexual harassment she no doubt had to face. But she did it, and earned the high respect of NASA and all the astronauts and engineers there. I doubt you advanced that far in school, BP, so have some f*****g respect for Katherine G Johnson.

" When NASA began to use computers" this not correct, should read electronic machines as computers. Because before the machines they had rooms full of women doing the calculations, and they were called computers.

"You can learn anything on the internet, so why do I so often learn things I don’t want to know?" Daniel T. Willingham, author of 'Outsmart Your Brain,' ponders in his article. It's a valid question, particularly when we consider just how much information we are constantly bombarded with.

According to the latest estimates, 328.77 million terabytes of data are pumped into the web each day. Of course, it's not clear how much of it is new information unseen on the net before. But considering that it takes around 5-6 hours (or two Avengers films) to read a single, unfiltered terabyte of data - and two more hours to stop your addicted fingers from scrolling friends' feeds on Insta - we're kind of happy there's r/interesting to filter out the most curious bits of it.

It's an art installation in the UK. The windows came from a disused church that was being torn down. It's not uncommon for churches to fall out of use as demographics change and congregations come and go. There is a church near me that lost its stained glass windows when it was converted into a restaurant decades ago.

It's no coincidence that they're mostly in one area. It must be easy to keep a recessive gene/mutation going if every animal you breed has it.

'Pence' is the plural of 'penny'. So 'one penny', 'ten pence, fifty pence'. Sometimes when I pay by cash my change is one penny (because things are often 99 pence) and I have to bite my lip because the cashier says "One pence change," instead of "One penny".

I live in Flathead County, MT we have amazing things here including being the entrance to Glacier National Park. It is a rural county almost the size of the state of CT with a few "cities". Over the summer we are inundated with tourists flocking here in giant RV's and trashing our beautiful lakes and mountains. We are more likely to be nice to you if you just try to not litter, stop trying to pet wildlife, always be prepared for bears, National parks are not playgrounds there is no safety net to catch you, do not be rude to service employees. The locals are all polite and neighborly in public even when we do not know each other but come tourist time we keep our heads down and lose our neighborlyness. Also, remember you are in rural NW Montana you will see many signs and flags with "f" Biden, open carry (and concealed since it is legal here) but do know there are lots of us trying to fight the good fight like our state Senator Jon Tester.

But what exactly drives us to seek information which may not be necessary or actively sought after? There's no one simple explanation, Daniel Willingham, a Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia and the author of 'Outsmart Your Brain,' explained to Bored Panda.

"Curiosity is a desire to gain more information," he said. "We expect ourselves to be curious about things that are either a topic that's interesting or have some utility for us in the long term." Apparently, neither of that is 100% true. Instead, Willingham argues that "curiosity seems to be to have a very short time scale it cares about."

Yes, they introduced the hole as the previous version was a potential airways hazard, notably for young children. You can get the one with a hole caught in your airway and there will still be a flow of air into your lungs.

NOT completely the same - it used to have a solid top until some people choked on it, and they were forced to put a hole in the cap from 1991.

This isn't quite accurate. In the early 1990s, Bic changed the design on the lids. This was to ensure children could still breathe if they swallowed a pen lid.

Let's say, for example, that you're an ardent stamp collector and stumble upon a conversation where someone claims to possess intriguing insights about the World War II postage stamps that graced France. Your initial reaction? Nonchalance. Why? "You would not feel any curiosity exactly because you feel like you already know pretty much everything, even though it's of great interest to you," Willingham argued.

Now, let's flip the script. Imagine a scenario where someone, unaware of your stamp-collecting prowess, suggests sharing the very knowledge you hold dear. They entice you with the prospect of uncovering a treasure trove of information, as you stand on the precipice of ignorance. Curious, right?

Well, not quite, it turns out. "You wouldn't feel any curiosity [in the subject] because the information wouldn't feel meaningful to you," he explained. "In order for information to feel meaningful, you have to have something to connect it to."

The majority of the people in every country just want to live their lives, and bear no ill will toward anybody else. Only they have try to to survive while the miniscule minority group who have tiny brains and loud mouths, can’t live in peace, always have to have an enemy—-a them for the us to hate—-but have absolutely NO clue about the long term effects of what they’re doing, just f**k it up for the rest of us.

it wasnt inspired by this house but by a woman's house named Edith Macfield. they were planning to build a shopping mall in a town but the place they were planning had people's houses. so they offered them 1 million dollars to help them move and for compensation, etc. everyone accepted except Edith Macfield. they tried everything but she refused to move so they built the mall around the house. she died in 2008 but her house is still standing and right now is being auctioned off by an anonymous seller

What’ll really boggle your mind is that, just like in UP, when the original owners built/bought the house, they were probably surrounded by woods and pastures, then maybe a small neighborhood, long before the greedy developers built—-correction, OVERBUILT—-the skyscrapers that have bulldozed all the greenery and trees, replaced them with concrete, and f****d everything up.

The old (19th C) cemetery behind my house has many graves with 3-4 kids on per family who didn't live past the age of 10. These were the wealthy families too, the working class kids are buried in the unmarked common grave mounds. All of these families would have loved to receive diphtheria, polio and measles vaccinations that could have saved their kids.

I have no problem with REAL vaccines. The covid "vaccine" was created in less than a year and is a load of horses**t. I've been vaccinated from measles, mumps, whooping cough, et al. I have not been stuck with the Fauci sh** and I have had the virus and I've only gotten sick once each year with a common flu like every other year before the scamdemic. My niece and nephews have all gotten stuck and keep getting covid. Yeah, it's a real vaccine...BULLS**T!

According to Willingham, one of the most important ingredients for the sake of our curiosity is being surrounded by new juicy information that we're not particularly interested in already. It's this very notion that subreddits like r/interesting thrive upon, constantly offering users a stream of captivating tidbits. However, this is why traditional educational institutions often struggle to evoke a sense of curiosity in students.

"It's so difficult for teachers to make children feel curious about school content because some of them already know it. A lot of them don't know anything at all about it, so they can't connect with anything." Unlike the boundless realm of the internet, where we have the freedom to indulge our curiosity by delving deep into topics that pique our interest, the educational system presents a different reality.

In school, we are bound to follow a structured curriculum that encompasses a wide range of subjects. We don't have the luxury of cherry-picking only the areas that intrigue us. Instead, we must navigate the entire breadth of the curriculum.

The average banana is 18-20 cm long. For ease of math, we'll go on the high end and say 20 cm per banana. There are 100,000 cm in a km; divided by 20 gives you 5,000 bananas per km. Multiply that by 10,000 and we're talking 50,000,000 bananas. Presuming my math is correct, of course.

With the advent of Google and the ability to access an infinite pool of information at our fingertips, the landscape of curiosity has undergone a profound transformation. "The expectation [nowadays] is that we should feel curious sort of all the time," Willingham said, noting that this perpetual state of curiosity can be both exhilarating and draining.

Recent statistics show that 1-in-5 Americans admit to feeling overloaded by information - a phenomenon that runs counter to the very essence of curiosity. "There should always be something that we're eager to learn about or at least enjoy. And if we're not, we don't see why we should be bored, right?"

Colorado is interesting because it is 50/50. West half of state is mountains, Eastern half is flat. I used to live in Broomfield which is almost on that line. Broomfield area is pretty flat but a short drive to Boulder starts taking you up into the mountains.

I did a research: The lambs didn’t grow in the bags from conception; they were taken from their mothers’ wombs by caesarean section, then submerged in the Biobag, at a gestational age equivalent to 23-24 weeks in humans. 🤮

Which means that if a baby is being born prematurely because they'll definitely die otherwise, they can be put "back" into a womb to finish growing. That could be incredible. Thank you for the the clarification - they aren't just growing entire embryos from scratch in there. That would be a bit more freaky, although I can't fully explain why I feel that way

These lambs were born prematurely and put into these artificial wombs. The experiment is from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Every year 30 000 American babies are born prematurely at 26 weeks or younger and as soon as they take their first breath, their lungs stop developing and as a result they suffer long term health problems. Autopsies of these lambs later showed that their organs developed properly.

Downvoting folks for their opinions like this is disappointing. A lot of people are thinking the same thing. Like me. This is disturbing and I can't put my finger on exactly why but we as an imperfect society shouldn't do things to artificially create life so that we can then exploit that life since we haven't figured out how to honor ALL of ones already here accidentally and quite naturally. Something like that.

Meteora Monasteries have 300 steps. It's universally known that women aren't allowed in any of the 20 monasteries of Mt Athos or anywhere on the mountain itself [a rule strictly applied since the 4th century, when the 1st monastery was built in the area]. That's 20 centuries of women-hating by generations of Greeks. Aaack!

People, just leave wildlife TF alone! Quit decimating their habitats, quit trafficking in them and their fur and other body parts, quit trying to take a close up selfie with them then blame them when they hurt you, who didn’t belong there anyway, FFS. Just admire them from a distance and leave them be. Let’s just refurbish existing buildings and neighborhoods instead of bulldozing nature and building new further out. Let’s learn to live with nature, and forget the old idea of controlling it. You’d think we’d have learned by now. Yeah, I know there’s a percentage that never learn.

biofacts don't necessarily come from killed animals. biofacts (biological artifacts) are used by many educational institutions to engage the public. At the zoo i volunteered at for 9 years, i was one of many biofact workers. We handled skins, skulls, bones, tracks, teeth, ivory, feathers, full mounts, etc. Some biological artifacts are on permanent loan from US fish and wildlife, some from donations, some from confiscations by Customs, and many from animals in the zoo that died of old age or illness.

I got to pet a penguin being transported down the East Coast. (I worked in a pet-friendly hotel, so we got to pet 2 penguins & a sloth! Best day ever!!!) Penguins are incredibly soft! IMO they're softer than any fleece/fur blanket I've ever touched. The handler said they have 1000 feathers per square centimeter. Craziness!!!

If it was smooth like shown in the recreation picture then a lot of limestone must have eroded away. I've been their in person and up close the huge stone blocks are stair stepped. People can climb p them even though they are not supposed to. The recreation pic looks like it was just one steep slope nobody could climb on.

It's likely that there is access from the back through a tunnel. Other similar but not-quite-so-vertical outposts were accessed using a 'via ferrata', basically a climbing path with fixed ladders and a cable to which you clip yourself for safety.

Me being a martyr: Mhm, yep, your essay on why you hate me and want me dead has quite a few mistakes in it. For instance, your second point needs to be more connected to your thesis statement, it strayed a little bit. Secondly, you have a never ending amount of comma splices AND run-on sentences… I suggest you refresh yourself on proper grammar rules and revisit your punctuation. Lastly, the f word is used far too much as a filler. I suggest using substitutions or completely omitting it, as the sentences would read just as well, if not better, without them. Otherwise, it’s only a rough draft, and I’m sure you’re aware of some obvious ways to improve it for your second draft. Good work for the first draft though!

I can totally relate. At least he was spared from living in an age when people said things like 'he graduated high school' and 'when I graduate college.' Folks back then mebbe dint always use ta spell corect, but at least they'd mastered the use of the word 'from.'

"Amazingly"? It's of cool, of course, that these days we are able to make such pictures and can really *see* how well theory and reality match up - but it's not like this is a lucky accident! Lot's of lab work and analysis was done to determine the arrangement of atoms in a molecule. You needed the background knowledge to interpret them (and the creative inspiration - it took scientists a while to come up with the ring form of benzol)... but the data were there.

Had one like this in a bushfire once. The tree was close to an unburnt house so we were keen to extinguish the fire. Poured 4 truck-loads of water in the top and up from the hole in the base. Made a heap of steam but otherwise had no effect at all - just kept on burning like blast furnace. Two years later I drove past and it was covered in green shoots.

Nice try, but Great Britain countered by 1. encouraging an Industrial Revolution not fully controlled by the political elites as was done in France and 2. when that created a population explosion of desperate poor, they made the most trivial crimes punishable by death…. with sentences commuted to transportation to the colonies. by 1759, millions of British Americans took the continent from ten thousand Frenchmen and their native allies

Great Britain sent them to America, especially Virgina, too. France sent “nice” young women (voluntarily) to Quebec; and “bad” women and jailbird men to malarial Louisiana. In the next century, France would send its undesirables to even worse Guiana. One oddball theory holds that Brits were willing to emigrate because you can brew beer pretty much anywhere, while wine; good, drinkable wine, could only be produced in France. Life elsewhere was not worth living.

In high school, we had one muslim girl. She was wearing al- amira and long-sleeved dress over her regular clothes. Usually in black and white colour. But people kept mistaking her for a nun, so she started to wear colouful headscarves over her al-amira.

I think it’s social norms that vary from region to region and family to family. In Java, Indonesia. Hijabs are fairly common and other styles are a relatively rare sight on adults. (I did see Khimars being worn apparently as uniforms for some schools but that varies from school to school as there are a large variety of Muslim schools, secular schools, Catholic schools , and everything in between in most cities.)

Yeah in Europe we don't go for max size when the product is not healthy, bigger is not always better people. Who needs more than half a litre of sugary fluid at one go? No one.

It's baffling, then, how a 2019 study found that 52.7% of the adult population of the EU member states is overweight! How on earth could the EU and UK have rising obesity rates if their Arizona teas are 180mL LESS than America's Arizona teas?!!? /s because I am really sick of "hurr hurr look at America's huge product and portion sizes that's why u all r fat hurr hurr, in EUROPE we don't have such huge portion sizes!!!11" when obesity rates are rising WORLDWIDE. Yeah, America is rampantly obese, but so are the rest of the first world countries.

America's perception of all natural seems to be a little different than in Europe. Cowboy cocktail fruit punch would probably cause a little aggravation in certain groups. I'll have to look if I can find this because I'd like to taste it and the can is amazing too.

What actual Americans perceive as "all natural" is also very different than whatever marketing b******t is splayed across the front of a can. Would it be appropriate if I made assumptions about what all Europeans believe by reading whatever manufacturers choose to put on their product labels?

Every h.s. classroom needs to have windows or you'll have millions of tween/tween claustrophobics. There's no other way to build a big school or prison than like this so every room gets a window. Otherwise, you need more land & build separate buildings, separate entrances, more security staff & equipment [cameras, tape, monitors, computers to view & database room to store]. More land requires more gardeners, landscapers, lawnmowers & ppl to water lawns & pull weeds & worms, perhaps plant flowers, trees, bushes (& trim)...See why it's cheaper & more compact to build just 1 bldg?

That makes sense to me. I used to live in a flat where the bathroom had no window, and I was terrified the light-bulb would blow while I was in the bath, leaving me in pitch darkness. I lived alone and had no way to call for help. Sorry that's a bit off-topic, just thinking of rooms without windows,

Energy drinks can be dangerous. My coworker had a heart attack recently. When I asked his son, what happened he told me that he warned him that drinking 4 or 5 a day was dangerous. Knew another guy that got a red bull sponsorship and he was always drinking them, like soda. He dropped dead of a heart attack in his 50's a few years later. They ARE DANGEROUS...

Written on the can of Monster it says not to drink more than 2 a day and one can is 2 servings. Personal responsibility. Check the sugar substitutes in energy drinks. Monster uses ERYTHRITOL which can cause strokes. Red Bull is the safest if you drink them.

Based on the state's modeling for future years, officials expect electric vehicles by 2035 will account for only about 10% of the total system hour load. The electric cars are NOT what is straining our grid. In 2022 EVs only accounted for about 1% of the power drain.

I remember being told by my Grandad about when he was attacked by a fella with one of these Japanese swords whist in the jungle in Burma in the Royal Scots Regiment in WW2. Luckily, he managed to shoot him before he got within slashing/stabbing range. Nevertheless, not a pleasant experience. (He never could workout why the Japanese soldier didn't use the element of surprise and just shoot him before he could shoot back)

maybe he wanted to give your Grandfather the opportunity to shoot him, my Dad served in Guam during WW2 and he was so thankful that he didn't have to kill anyone, he said he didn't think he could if the opportunity arose. It's possible death was preferable to killing to the Japanese soldier.

Yes, the stairs were built first and then they needed to add a wheelchair ramp which reduced the space available for the stairs, and it was cheaper to just make the new handrail further along than remove the end portion of the steps.

That's a h*ll of a steep ramp for a chair. And the rails look too high for pulling oneself up. This setup would be a nightmare. Useless and aesthetically odd as f*ck.

Nobody seems to have understood what "PandaGoPanda" said, Additionally, the ramp may also need a handrail, so they "elegantly" joined the two handrails...

I was confused because we can't see enough of the proper flight of stairs, maybe that confused other people as well.

I learned the Bren gun in high-school. Toronto, 1962. We had a group of .22-converted Enfield rifles for target practice and learning military exercises. No harm done.

Because Bored Panda has a capital letter at the start of each word - even if it's not a work but initials - before seeing the photo I read the heading as "AKS" (as in yaks). I'm like, I wonder what Aks are?

Yes, me too. Also because I'm not very familiar with the names of weapons.

This was a propaganda map produced to show what the US might end up looking like if they didn't enter WW1 against the Germans. Basically portraying America as part of a global German Empire.

"Seen it"? Try reading the book. Much better. The TV show adaptation is a shitshow, comparatively.

A 2017 $2 bill is worth about $2.00. "The common misconception that the $2 note is no longer being produced also remains, though $2 notes have been printed since 1862, except for a 10-year hiatus between 1966 and 1976. The U.S. Treasury reports that $1,549,052,714 worth of $2 bills were in circulation worldwide as of April 30, 2007 - Wikipedia Note: 3 billion dollars worth of $2-bills in circulation in 2022 according to the Federal Reserve.

They are quite uncommon. Nearly all the $2 bills I have ever seen were in birthday or Christmas cards from relatives when I was a child.
