CT Scan Of 1,000-Year-Old Buddha Sculpture Reveals Mummified Monk Hidden Inside

The researchers did not expect a real person in the statue, the results of the CT scan were a total surprise for them. Based on scrolls in the bottom of the statue they discoverd the name of the buddhist monk; Liuquan who may have practiced "self-mummification" to prepare for life after death. The process of self-mummification is a known tradition in countries like Japan, China and Thailand, and was practiced more than a thousand years ago. The elaborate and arduous process includes eating a special diet and drinking a poisonous tea so the body would be too toxic to be eaten by maggots. The few monks that were able to successfully complete the process were highly revered. At this moment two Chinese villages claim to be the owner of the statue, and claim it was stolen. But there are no strong facts to support this claim. Since then the statue has been in hiding.

The statue has a scrape of paper inside with his real name on it. The name was the same as the ancestor the villagers had been worshiping for a thousand years. The statue now looks somewhat different from what the villagers' description of how it looked when stolen in 1995, because it normally had cloths on, and the exposed portion was darkened by a millennia worth of ceremonial incise smoke. He was treated as a god back then and was not allowed to be photographed. In Vietnam we also have mummified statues of 2 buddhist monks from the 17th century. This is called Full Body Relics. The two statues are considered sacred national treasures and receive the same reverence as the living Buddha.

Opal is a form of silica and forms when water runs through rock and earth. It picks up silica, which later on gets deposited in voids or sometimes cracks when the water evaporates. Here it filled the openings in the Ammonite shell.

When we think of interesting things inside of other things, our minds usually wander to one thing. Don’t deny it, you probably had the same thought, too. That’s right! Matryoshka dolls, also known as Babushka or nesting dolls!
According to the Nesting Dolls website, the very first set of Russian nesting dolls was crafted by woodworker Vasilii Zvyozdochkin and painted by artist Sergei Malyutin in 1890. They named their creation “matryoshka” which means “little matron” but also known as the Rooster Girl because of the traditionally depicted black rooster she holds in her arms.
Matryoshka dolls became widely popular in 1900 after they won a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, France. Their rise to stardom meant that they started to be exported all over the world. They continue to be popular to this day.

I can imagine there are a lot of random things growing inside tree trunks. Things buried where the tree grew, or on top of where the seedling broke through. Something thrown or stuck in small branches then enveloped as the branches become limbs. Two trees growing close together become one tree and absorb anything between them. Sorry, just following a train of thought.

Speaking of Russian nesting dolls, Bored Panda spoke about them with Cassie Burgess of the Golden Cockerel shop that specializes in Russian gifts and souvenirs. We wanted to hear their opinion about why so many people continue to be fascinated by Nesting Dolls.
Here's what she Burgess had to say: "We hear everyday from our visitors that mom, grandma, or a dear friend had a set of Matryoshkas that was a favorite toy from their childhood, so when they walk into our Gallery they feel again the sheer delight of that cherished playtime. Seems today the fascination has changed over the years to include folks with a true love for the handmade nature of the craft and the carvers and artists still creating this type of art."
The Golden Cockerel shop is over two decades old now. "Having grown up during the Cold War, owner Walton Conway traveled to Russia in the early 1990s to create friendships with Russians and break down Russian-American barriers. He opened the business to strengthen ties between the two countries and to share Russian talents and delights with the rest of the world. It has been a fascinating journey over 25 years," Burgess told Bored Panda about the history of the store.
"Bringing New World business standards to an Old World cottage industry continues to provide constant challenges. Getting the turners and artisans to fill orders consistently and reliably can be vexing! Through it all, Matryoshka keeps her handmade charm and continues to delight young and old, as one doll opens to another and other. We like to think of the Russian doll as an onion with many layers that makes one smile instead of cry."
According to Burgess, the most elaborate set of custom Nesting Dolls they've done is the Hong Kong Celebrity Matryoshka made up of 76 pieces! It was so big that the first doll stood at just over 3 feet. "Owner Roman Karkachev traveled to Hong Kong for the presentation of this master work," Burgess said.

It's called a counter-peristalsis contraction. When one egg passes through the oviduct and then in stead of passing further, goes back. It then can become part of another egg forming in the hen.

Me and my husband were walking on the beach, picking up shells and pretty rocks, and he put them in his pocket. He emptied everything out on the table that night and we were stunned when one of the shells started moving.... It was still occupied. So we made the walk back to the beach and put him back where we found him. Always double check when you go shell hunting on the beach! lol

I've found little crabs like this inside oysters before. I shucked oysters at a bar as a teenager and used to find pearls all the time. They were never pretty, but usually funky grey little egg shaped pearls. Occasionally, a little crab would make an appearance.

It's a one-time charger because the batteries inside are non-rechargeable. Yes, you can replace the battery inside it, but the batteries are most of the cost of this charger anyway.

I mean, the whole point of a bocce ball is to throw it at other bocce balls. Usually on a soft-ish surface like grass or gravel or sand, but I've seen people play on asphalt or concrete. If you're throwing objects at objects and maybe on top of concrete, after enough years of use, they could break.

I MAKE THESE for my doggo, he's a teething pupper, 12 weeks old. Discard the lid, step on a water bottle (has to be thin plastic type). Cut a sleeve off of a no-longer-wanted long sleeve t-shirt, insert smashed bottle, tie a knot in each end of sleeve. Get down on the floor and have a good time showing your pup how much fun it is.

Now this is VERY common. The bottle is what makes it crinkle!! Some toys come unloaded so you can add your own used water bottles inside.

of course there's writing inside! that's how pens work! they are prefilled with all possible words symbols and numbers, and they flow out of the pen onto the paper when you use them! the fact that there are only Chinese letters left in the pen shows that you already used up all the American words in it. probably it broke because you tried to write American with an almost empty pen that had no American words left...

You should cut them in half for kids under 7 year old avoid choking. A small child's throat is just the right size to get a whole grape lodged in it and sometimes even the Heimlich can't get it out.

saw some video on yt, apparently they advertise almost double power on the power bank itself while in reality it's half of that (ie advertised 20000mah while 10000mah real) and a cell or two as in this case filled with sand or dirt to mimic the weight of other real batteries inside.

Yup, that's exactly how it always worked. One 1.5V battery is also called a "cell" and they come in different sizes, from "AAAA" (smallest) to "F (largest), so you can see how you can group these cells together to give you desired voltage and amperage - for example two cells of any size will give you 3v, but bigger cells will have more "oomph". So, a standard 4.5V battery contains 3 "B" cells, even though single "B" batteries have been discontinued, and a 9v "E" rectangular battery (like that in the photo) contains six "AAAA" cells, etc.
