If I asked you to picture an exotic country, you'd probably go with something like Australia or Japan. But after this exclusive list by Bored Panda, you'll probably consider South Korea one too.

To show how unique this country really is, we put together a collection of pictures that vividly illustrate its everyday life. We're talking solar-powered benches with USB and wireless charging, onion-flavored cereal, and pretty much everything else you can find there.

Continue scrolling to check out the images and the conversation I had with Hammer and Guillaume, A Fun Couple from Hong Kong and France respectively, who have been traveling the world and documenting their adventures on their blog and Instagram.

That's something I've seen in real life, some Asian women of a certain age and social class were put to work as soon as they were old enough, and never taught to read or write.

My Nonna came here to the US from Northern Italy with my grandfather right after the Second World War. She didn’t speak a word of English, and only had a third grade education. That is exactly why. In the third grade, she was pulled from school to go work in a factory, and earn money for her family (my relatives). My mom used to tell me, “If you want to learn to speak Italian, take a class. Your Nonna speaks it very poorly.” — To this day, I wish I had ignored my mother. She discouraged me from spending time with and learning from my Nonna. Who cares if she spoke it “poorly”. Who cares.

This is super sweet. Also, a Korean company Hancom made "grandma fonts" based on the handwtiting of students that learned hangeul later in life and were proud of their accomplishment. You can download them for free.

I wish more countries looked after the welfare of their elderly citizens more. I'm sure both the grandmas and christen get more out of this than just learning to read. Like the UK tv programme where they placed a nursery inside a care home. The results were amazing for both the children and elderly people.

Unfortunately, Korea lacks a lot of affordable care options for the elderly. There is an extremely high rate of working elderly living in squalor or homeless elderly. They need to bump up welfare payments and also help enroll the elderly, including destigmatizing welfare payments.

We in the Western "civilised" world take so much for granted - education being one of them. Many countries do not have state education - Cambodia, Laos, Afghanistan, Myannmar, to name but a few. I remember asking a young girl when I was in Cambodia, why she wasn't at school - her answer was simply that her parents couldn't afford to send her. It's tragic.

This Care Package The South Korean Government Sent Me While I’m In Quarantine Day 2

Translated letter that was attached to the package: “For people who are currently suffering from the Corona-19 virus, we send our regards and sympathy. We (the food ministry?) is sending this “environment-friendly health package” constructed with environment-friendly crops. We hope this helps you get energy for your daily routine. Furthermore, we hope you get well soon to return to your daily life. You can do it! Fight it! Go South Korea!”

My daughter's daycare had to shut down for 2 weeks because a teacher became infected. We ended up getting a care package as well since some families do rely on nutritionally balanced lunches and snacks from daycare. I didn't expect it at all!

This country in East Asia makes up about 45 percent of the Korean Peninsula and faces North Korea across a demilitarized zone (DMZ) that's 2.5 miles (4 km) wide. The DMZ was established by the terms of the 1953 armistice that ended fighting in the Korean War (1950–53) and runs for about 150 miles (240 km).

"We have been calling South Korea our home for 3.5 years now," A Fun Couple told Bored Panda. "What we liked about the idea of moving here was that this country is still not on most people's bucket list when traveling to Asia. Many travelers would rather prioritize neighboring countries such as Japan, China or Hong Kong when visiting the continent."

However, according to Hammer and Guillaume, South Korea has been making a name for itself over the last few years, with the K-phenomenon on the cultural side and large companies such as Samsung and LG on the business side.

"We were excited but also curious to live in a country that continues to develop fast yet remains a bit unknown to the Western world."

One aspect that really impressed the couple once they came to this country was the strong sense of solidarity amongst Koreans. "An aspect that's really astonishing and will help you understand what we mean by that is the gold collecting campaign."

"In 1998, South Korea was about $304 billion in debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). As a national sacrifice, 3.5 million Koreans donated their gold to the government to repay part of the debt. About 227 tons of gold were donated voluntarily during that event. Impressive, right?!"

"This sense of solidarity can be felt in everyday life in Korea. For example, during the pandemic, people were very supportive of each other. Koreans made a joint effort to keep social distancing rules and wear masks at all times. This is also why South Korea was seen as a benchmark when managing the COVID crisis in its early stage."

Of course, settling in another culture takes time. Hammer and Guillaume said the 'work hard, play hard' concept was probably the trickiest thing to adjust to.

"Koreans are very hard working. The maximum number of working hours per week recently changed from 63 to 52, but it's still a lot. Although the work-life balance got better over the last few years, working overtime (and not being paid for it) is still pretty common."

"It is also very common to go out with colleagues multiple times a week after work and have dinner and drinks until late at night. We definitely had to cut down on our sleeping hours, but it's a lot of fun to live and work in South Korea!"

This is a great idea. S. Korea excels are preventative medicine. It costs less money to provide the resources that allow someone sick to stay home than if they went to the grocery store and got two other people sick, and then they got 4 people sick, they got 8 sick, etc. On top of that, it increases happiness and lowers anxiety because someone made an effort to help you out. A bowl of soup usually makes me feel better when I'm sick even if it has no real effect.

I think it was about the 7th week of lockdown here in the UK when I got a food parcel from our local council ( I'm determined 'vulnerable to covid cause of complications from previous chemo affecting my lungs and nervous system)........ it had in it a couple of tins of soup, and some veg that was waaaay past it's use by date.... in fact one item was a bag of carrots that had gone so far past it, they had liquified. I asked them not to send me any more, because whilst not wanting to be ungrateful it was truly more of a hassle getting rid of it than any benefit it provided.

In the US, we didn’t even get government cheese (which is pretty good, actually. My family used to be on food stamps for a while, when I was little, and my parents had to wait in line to get our monthly box of cheese and pantry items. I found out years later that that particular food program ended). But I’m glad we didn’t get liquified carrots during lockdowns, either. So sorry you got useless stuff like that.

"Since there are much fewer expats in South Korea than other Asian countries we've lived in, things are not always fully catered to foreigners. Opening a bank account, getting a local driver's license, getting a phone plan, using different apps; these things weren't always easy," A Fun Couple said.

"Besides there is still a language barrier and most of the documents are rarely translated into English. However, we've noticed that it has become easier for a foreigner to go about their daily life than when we arrived here 3.5 years ago. So we hope that this trend will continue in the future as well!"

It is actually quite clever, as cats tend to get into engine space of cars when it is cold, to get warm. You starting the engine will terribly injure or even kill the cat. I suppose the sign warns you about that.

the reason they are able to do this is by darkening all the edges, and having a lot of lights everywhere. that way there aren’t many shadows making it look 2D. our brains actually see everything in 2D and only assume things are 3D due to shadows. that’s why things like this are possible, as well as hyper realistic drawings. there’s a whole ton of videos on yt that go way more into depth on this. i definitely recommend looking into it!

I also got one (we call it a popsicle mold) from Amazon a few years ago. We grow our own blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries. We usually put all the fruit in the blender with a little honey, but sometimes we leave a few slices whole to make it cute like that. Definitely try it. So worth it!

This isn't solid organization though. This is simply color-coding. Real organization is like with like. On this display you could have potato chips, tortilla chips, and popcorn over and over bc of the colors, instead of each type together for ease of purchase. Conversely, as Arran Walker said, in the States we put brands together. Which is also a better form of organization than by color. I'm currently on the lookout for All Dressed chips from Ruffles. I know to go to the Ruffles section to find them.

Unless you're lying in the sun to get a tan your body temp wouldn't actually change enough to turn the sticker yellow. Hot sun and cold ocean water will balance each other out. Plus this is a pretty neat way to avoid heatstroke on a really hot day.

They are to detect fever for COVID control. You have to register when you arrive at the beach and they place this sticker on you. If it turns yellow (usually right away) then you're to report to the health clinic tent they have on site for another temp check & if it's high, a covid test.

There is an issue with the design of this passage. The escalator is closer than the stairs which makes it a decision between taking the escalator now or the stairs later. It also doesn't help that the stairs are partially blocked by the column. Moving the stairs closer and to the right while relocating the escalator behind the column would greatly improve the situation without a need for the signs. Speaking of the signs, if it would work and make many people healthier at a cost of several people getting unreasonably offended, it is a good trade off. Unfortunately, the photo is an evidence of a failure, therefore, the signs are no good.

Yes. I have seen signs showing how many calories you are burning while walking up stairs, which is FAR more supportive and effective than these stickers

If you read the caption, it says "Remember to be healthy at all times!" It isn't used to body-shame someone into using the stairs.

In Baku, the street cleaners are old ladies with makeshift brooms. They need to find a new way to clean streets. (keep in mind, Baku drivers are the worst, they can turn a 2 lane road into a 4 lane road. They drive on the sidewalk. so this would be crushed.)

Hm. Maybe a more effective strategy would be to have better driving classes, or more penalties for poor driving? What is is the root of the bad driving in Baku?

Not all supermarkets and not only toilet paper. You can taste food and drinks as well, cosmetics too, and you have samples of menstrual pads as well. But only some brands, not all of the products.

Great idea. When its in package, its difficult to see how thick or rough it is. The sample allows you to grab a piece and examine it. That 12 pack for 14,800 feels like a pine tree and you can see through 3 sheet of it so a roll's not going to last long. Maybe buy the 19,900 one that is serviceable texture and only needs one sheet and is pretty similar to the 25,900 one. You can decide it you want to spend the extra 6,000 for fluffiness.

No, not usually. Sometimes that is. Usually, you only get a free plastic knife, but the rest depends on the shops individually. In bakeries they will, however, ask you if you need candles and how many, these are free and come with a free match as well. Unless you bought the fancy ones separately. Still, you'd get a free match to light them.

You pay for water in almost everything in a bottle/plastic container. Liquor/beer is 99% water, as is shampoo, conditioner, liquid soap, cleaners [facial/Fantastik], &c. Your time doesn't sound valuable as you make paste? From baking soda? Yech.

I worked for a tableware company in Seattle. The owner (the company is named for her) was the most narcissistic person I've ever worked with - she actually insisted that SHE invented cherry blossoms for use on dishware. I was like, "Um, cherry blossoms have been used in Asian countries for centuries ..." Yeah, I was not her favorite employee, but because I was the bookkeeper I answered to her husband, and he loved me.

The Chinese also avoid having a 4th floor. The reason is the same the sound for 4 and the sound for death are homonyms. $ is the unluckiest number in China as is 7. 7 is because the Japanese attacked China from Manchuria on July 7th 1937. Funny they do not memorialize the day in 1931 when the Japanese attacked the northeastern provinces and created Manchuria out of the area they conquered.

Manchuria changed hands several times through the centuries between Mongolia, Japan, and Russia. It isn't core Chinese land, plus in 1931 the rest of China was partially occupied by European powers.

Here in Belgium you can also buy eggs and vegetables like that. (Outside the city though) love it! The owner even once told me there is more cash because people can't get change, but nobody minds to pay a bit more door super fresh produce.

This is common in rural areas of the US too. Usually we have corn, fresh veggies, and eggs.

We have these too in Germany! They're usually in well lit areas and close to exits so women can feel safer especially at night. They're not legally binding though (like e.g. handicapped spots) so in theory men can park there too.

Recycle your eyeglasses if you can. I keep an old pair that still work for my old 'boyfriend' Justin Case, but the others I donate. We also make sure to buy the old glasses that sometimes appear at yard sales in order to donate them. Lots of eye doctors have boxes for donations of old eyeglasses. IDK about prescription sunglasses, though.

This reminds me of a story. In front of Target there are large cement balls as bollards. My brother went to a store that had them for the first time when he was 5. This is in fact a "premium" bus, not a train. The seat is similar to business class in planes I'd say. You can lie almost flat and the seat is really comfortable. Also, bus or train tickets are always the same amount, even if you buy it an hour before. I personally prefer travelling with these buses, because they are more comfortable than trains, sometimes even faster, and they stop at highway rest areas where you can get great food!

What's the ettiquette for removing someone else's property from your car? Does the car-owner tear it off and throw it away, or fold it neatly and return it to the construction foreman?

Well you can't move the car if you aren't there. And most of us don't have our phone numbers written on our cars so they can't just call us. My guess is these are re-usable too, since you just slot it over the car and it's open at the bottom so you just slide it off and return it.

There are some good independently run bakeries in Korea and many more good desert shops where the chefs are Korean. Bread and baking are just not part of Korean culinary history so you can’t really expect it to be widespread, but some are learning the craft, and doing it well.

Food Theory did an episode on this, there's a funny story behind it. They did a competition for a new flavour and this was the joke option. But although the joke option won the popular vote they still released the other flavour as the winner. There was so many complaints they later released this as a limited edition flavour.

In U.S., Krispy Kreme [& everyone else] calls it Vanilla ice cream. All pricey ice cream is rich & sweet. We hate yogurt & no company adds yogurt to ice cream [unless it's in large print on pckg] in U.S. "Milk-flavored frozen milk"~~good one, Kristin Ingersoll.

    Jackie Johnson

4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Z Alexi, vanilla is vanilla flavored, 'milk flavor' is different. All pricey ice cream is not rich and sweet. A lot of ice cream of any price is rich and sweet. Also, I think most people in the U.S. enjoy yogurt (have you seen a yogurt section in a grocery store in the U.S.? So many kinds of every variety and Greek yogurt is extremely popular now), we even have frozen yogurt and chains devoted to it. Only thing here is most people are not familiar with 'milk flavor' things unless they get something from a foreign market. That is where I was introduced to 'milk flavor' candy. I thought it was funny at first, but when I tried it it was so good! Sweet and rich with the zestiness of yogurt. I think if that flavor caught on here it would maybe be called yogurt flavor. I think if it was available normally here, many people would enjoy it. I'd love to try the milk flavor ice cream!

Honestly, a lot of tea bags have plastic in them, even ones that appear to be just paper often have plastic to seal them. At least the aluminum can be recycled in many places, although i'm not sure many recycling facilities would recycle a piece that small or empty it of tea, so it might end up in the garbage anyway. Not sure which is worse really.

North America ships it’s waste to poorer Asiatic nations. THATS the reason there is so much plastic waste in those nations. It truly has very minimal to do with the people living in those nations. Your comment show how little you understand about the plastic waste problems

Most new cars don't have any fluids in them. They are only added when the car is actually sold. Source: My new car was totalled because they forgot to fill it with oil and braking and cooling fluid.

Being that it's Korea, those are not massive cups of iced coffee they're normal-sized. That would make those little buns easily manageable with 1 hand and would probably only need a few bites to finish :)

We have similar ones in Finland. No it's not horrible and it's not abuse. Though here they're big cages and you have to put a coin in so you can lock it and get the key. They're super useful, you can walk your dog and get your groceries done at the same time.
