I wish I could upvote this more. It's also too bad billionaires don't think like this; the world would be a better place.
He came from nothing. He knows what it's like. He has natural empathy. The vast majority of billionaires came from already rich backgrounds. They do not know what it's like. They do not have natural empathy. In fact, in a large majority of cases, how they/their family became rich in the first place was through a distinct lack of empathy. Some of them, in their later years, have learned that philanthropy is a good thing. Far too few.

They provide beehives, ducks, goats, and heifers, as well as livestock-husbandry classes to struggling families and communities around the globe. Last year, my friends and family raised two-thirds of a goat for someone for my birthday, which I think gets me a seat in the US Senate? IDK, my copy of the Constitution is in cursive. I'm pretty sure it said "goat."
Now that I'm not poor as a church mouse I give $ to charity and the homeless. I still don't have a lot of $ but enough to take care of my needs. I'm not going to forget where I came from.

Founded back in May 2020, the ‘WTF Facts’ Twitter account has been educating and entertaining internet users for nearly three years now. It’s carved out a sizeable niche for itself on the social media platform. At the time of writing, it had 270.8k followers.

The answer is in this quote. The implication here is that most comedians become comedians to bring people joy because they know what it feels like to have none.

In a recent interview , Sam Neill also made the same comment at seeing a sadness in Robin Williams. The English comedian Tony Hancock is the epitome of the sad clown, firing everyone in his orbit before taking his own life
This is a fairly common theme when you hear comedians talk about their personal lives. A similar one is that most therapists have endured trauma. I've had training that exposed me to a lot of therapists in pretty candid settings. Almost to a person they got into it because of "sh.t" they experienced in their own lives. One way to view it is their own trauma gave them more empathy for the trauma of others and a desire to ease it.
I keep wondering if he even suspected how much he would be missed, and with what sadness.

One surefire way to stand out on the internet is to find a mix between education and entertainment, just like the ‘WTF Facts’ account does.
Internet users end up learning a lot of things they’d otherwise probably never have heard about. Meanwhile, they also end up enjoying themselves and sending the facts to their friends, classmates, and coworkers. (Personally, we like to keep a list of cool and bizarre facts in our suits to wow guests at fancy dinner parties whenever there’s awkward silence.)

I’m someone who is equally happy in my own company as I am in the company of others—-whom I actually know and like, that is. If I don’t like them but have to be around them, I grit my teeth and am cordial, but don’t socialize with them. If I don’t like them and don’t have to be around them, then buh-bye.
I'm around people all the time and I don't want to deal with people. I'll take my chances at being alone.

Load More Replies...Please don't show the shooters picture. He doesn't deserve to be remembered
Absolutely, despite knowing about Dunblane and the fact that the losses are commemorated every year in Scotland I had, rightly, no idea who the shooter was.
Load More Replies...Australia had a similar thing happen in the 90s. The government instituted a "gun buy back" program for people to return their guns for money. It was in response the to Port Arthur massacre where someone killed i think 35 people. There was severe backlash to the Prime Minister at the time, John Howard, who knew it was (at the time) an unpopular decision but did it anyway for the good of the country. Edited for typo.
I never liked John Howard but for this I have always respected him, he acted so decisively and fast. Didn't agree with the decision at the time even though I had no personal interest in guns I felt people should have their own choice. I was wrong, he was right that's all.
Load More Replies...The right to bear arms was intended as a way to defend against the invading British. Now it's just twisted toward selfishness.
Just remember. One day these tortured students will be our law makers and the NRA is dwindling as Boomers pass away. The 2nd Amendment will be repealed when the children who grew up with active shooter drills are the law makers.
Load More Replies...Canada has some pretty strict gun laws, too, and getting tougher. We still get school shooting now and then, but nothing like what's happening in the State's. It's not like there are no guns and no gun violence, including among youth, but it's usually outside of school. There has to be a completely different factor, besides gun access, that is causing such a huge rise in school shootings in the USA that no one is looking at.
StrangeOne, my theory is bullying, online and in the school itself.
Load More Replies...As a UK poster it's worth noting that I had to google this man. I assumed this post referred to the Dunblane massacre (only because it's the only school gun massacre I can ever recall), but I genuinely had no knowledge of the name of the perpetrator. He has rightly been excised from our consciousness.
Yes, same. I remember Dunblane but never knew his name or saw his photo before.
Load More Replies...Even ONE school shooting is too much. Hide his face and name. Remember the children and teacher, not the cowardly bastard who killed them.
Plot twist: he was a time traveler and saving the baby was a purely selfish act
Way, way better than the doc reading his paper and seeing that the kid whose life he saved was a cereal killer, who stole and demolished whole pallets of Corn Kix.
At the same time, researching and double-checking absolutely every tiny tidbit of information can be incredibly time intensive. So you need to leave that for the fringe cases where your alarm bells are really ringing. In the meantime, try to evaluate the credibility of the source that’s publishing the information.
How trustworthy is the account, outlet, or reporter? How do they ensure the reliability of the information that they share? What does their track record look like?

The fact of the matter is that there are no perfectly reliable sources; however, this doesn’t mean that all sources are equal. Though everyone makes mistakes, professional outlets make fewer of them, make corrections, and acknowledge if they’ve accidentally misled their readers.
So it’s always best to opt for reliable sources like Reuters, Associated Press, or The New York Times that employ fact-checkers and editors. These are always better choices than random, extremely biased, clickbaity websites that only care about getting views at any cost.
I have seen this in play. The person who points out the abuse / dysfunction / issues is a 'bad' person for rocking the boat

Does that, in any way, make his statement less true? Not saying that he should be absolved simply because of this statement. What I'm saying is that people, whether you like them or not, can and do speak truth from time to time and that truth is not made less true or more true based on whether or not you like the person.

Don't get me wrong, the work is excellent no matter what. I can see this being the most photorealistic for a painted work, but I have seen more photorealism in digital works. I dunno, this still has a painterly quality (in a good way). Not explaining this right but basically the realism is like a really nice bonus, not the sole point.

Rich people get praised for the good they do, but that's because they can afford it.
Load More Replies...You should also listen to your gut: if something sounds too good or too awful to be true, it might just be. Look for some other sources that might back up the claim before you repost it: it’s very easy for misinformation to spread in this day and age because there are more and more internet and social media users. Even doing some minimal Googling is better than blindly accepting everything as fact.
Especially for someone whose job forces them to be in the spotlight, and/or to face the general public their whole shift. Been there, done that, and prefer having an office with a door I can close. You can very easily get tired and stressed from the constant demands, often ridiculous and entitled, that people can make on you, and from many different sides (like customers and managers). You value your time to yourself, with nobody tugging at you to be here, do this, don’t do that, wear this, don’t wear that, look this way, smile smile smile (a particular pet peeve of mine, I’d rather be natural than paste a huge fake smile on my face—people easily pick up on that s**t), or rudely ordering you around like you’re a servant/expecting you to perform tasks immediately like a robot/anything else that comes into their f*****g tiny brains.
So kind and selfless of him to donate so much! So his last donation was in 2018 - does that mean he has passed, or that he is just plain too old to give anymore?
He's still alive. He is now 86. Australian policy prohibits blood donations from those past age 81.

A lot of satisfaction in his case, one of the people he was able to help was his own daughter. His own grandchild is alive because of his donations.
Load More Replies...What is criminal is that this blood (and blood in general) was/is sold (billed) at least $2000/pint. Yet it was/is DONATED. DONATED!
Per the FDA, only blood that is donated is allowed to be used for transfusions. Any paid donations are to be used for research or purchased by pharmaceutical companies only. I'm not sure what hospital charges $2000 for a pint of regular whole blood donation, generally the hospital pays the blood bank $500. The reason for that is that the blood, plasma or platelet you donate has to be processed and tested to be turned into a product that can be transfused into a patient. Those tests and lab work cost a significant amount of money. I worked as a lab tech in a blood bank for 14 years until I was unable to due to personal reasons. Blood Institutes that work with hospitals are Non-profit, meaning at the end of each fiscal year we cannot have ANY money leftover or turn a profit. Every penny goes towards lab equipment, courier vehicles, research, employee pay, etc.

Meanwhile, keep in mind that as our attention spans are shortening, content creators and news outlets are having to adapt to the changing needs of their audiences. People prefer short-form content these days because that’s what they’ve been consuming. It’s all a bit circular.

At the same time, long-form content and in-depth analyses still have a place in the world for those who want to learn things in a nuanced way, instead of having a very black-and-white perspective on life. Long-form content also has the added bonus—it can help restore our attention spans and ability to focus.
There's a photo out there of a bear ripping into a tent. The photographer inside took a photo right before the bear killed him. It is the most terrifying photo I've ever seen. This may be #2.

All he needed was a chance, a leg up, a little help to launch, which can be expensive. Deposits on an apartment plus first and last months rent, deposits for utilities, etc can wipe out savings fast—-if you have savings at all. If not, you have to save them up—-but still have to live somewhere and somehow in the meantime. A little bit if assistance is all some people need to flourish. Yes, there are those who will take advantage, and others who couldn’t cope, but there are so many who just need to catch a break. Don’t dismiss someone just because they’ve fallen on hard times—-because tomorrow it could be YOU needing someone to help YOU.

Yes, I remember reading about someone patenting some sort of device for exactly this sort of scenario. Maybe a bit more rigor is needed in determining if someone really is dead (cue the Monty Python and the Holy Grail scene...)
Load More Replies...That’s where the term “dead ringer” comes from. Back in the middle 1800’s people were terrified of being buried alive. Reasonable. So when they were buried a bell was placed on a post at their grave. It had a string that ran underground, through the casket and placed into the hand of the deceased. That way, if they woke up in the coffin, they could ring the bell to let someone know they were alive. They would be a “dead ringer”.
Also where the term “saved by the bell” originated

This is actually somewhat fake. The image went viral (mislabelled as being the "Alaskan Tree Frog" which does not exist) but it's actually an image of a garden ornament. It is however true that there's a type of wood frog native to Alaska that can use cryoprotectants in its blood to survive winter.
Why not include a picture of an actual alaskan wood frog instead of a garden ornament?
A wood frog friend of mine said that his grandpa woke up in some kind of fortress after thawing. Some kid apparently told him to stop thawing out
Sorry, but he was cremated, not (ahem!) frozen.
Load More Replies...I met this guy! It was actually a grain elevator that cut his arms off (according to him). He waited for the ambulance in the bathtub so he wouldn’t bleed on his mom’s carpet.
That would be a grain auger running off a PTO with no cover. Fairly standard on a farm. Not everything has a functioning shaft cover or really anything safety related. His shirt snagged on the PTO, twisting his arms off. The fact that his arms came off saved his life. If they hadn't , he just would have been twisted up like taffy around the shaft. PTOs want to kill you. Augers want to kill you. Open belts want to kill you. Leaving your shirt untucked will kill you. Grain bins will kill you. Combines want to kill you with knives, pokey things, and crushy things. Then they sift you out the back. If you're lucky, you'll get pulled in head first so it's quick. Everything you touch is poison. And the end is but the grave. Farming wants to kill you.

They immediately turned their lights on and arrest her. It's just that simple, I guess. Can you blame them, though? Shelters don't always have space to provide a bed, have early curfews and I've heard some require a small fee that not every person in need is able to pay. They get kicked out of bus shelters, the skywalks are locked by 11-12pm, and not even one cafe is open past 9pm downtown, except for some Tim Hortons, but some of them have a 20 minute stay limit. We see a lot of them drinking, huffing during the day and by night a lot of ambulances and police are tending to them. Many have made "tent cities" just for the city to come and take them down.

True. So sad how he was pretty much destroyed by Edison (who stole and plagiarized everything) and, like so many tortured geniuses, was not recognized for his brilliance until long after his death.
That Edison “stole and plagiarized” from Tesla has been pretty much debunked. Yes, Edison was an a-hole … but the whole story of stealing and plagiarism is more nuanced and not so cut and dry - a simple Google search will turn up information re: it.

The memorization would be a little harder not speaking it, but honestly he's probably got superb recall for this to have worked and you'd pick up a lot of patterns/spellings/root words going through the Dictionary. There is no harm in believing in a Cosmic Creator but when you add Christian dogma it portrays the world as an unrealistic nightmare with a Creator as a petty, vengeful tyrant. This destroyes a person's ability to believe. Humanity would do well to remember religions are fanfiction and IF a benevolent Creator existed it would accept the myths humans create until we learn enough to change it.
Amen to that! I believe RIchard Bach said, "God created man in his own image, then man returned the favor." Humans, especially humans in positions of power, attribute flawed human characteristics to God, jealousy, hate, vengeance. I know many people hate the idea of an omnipotent being because of the horrors inflicted on us all by those who presume to "represent" God, as if that were possible. For me, the absolute perfection of design in creation tells me there is someone/something responsible. The ability to feel love and empathy is my proof. I know it doesn't end here. This is just a chapter in a much larger book.

100% correct. The only reason this is a thing is because people are expected to not leave the office before the boss does and if that’s 10pm, well it’s 10 pm. You shouldn't be tired enough to need a nap at work so often that you have a bed there. Let me work normal hours and I'll sleep at home, thank you
Although Japan seems to have a reputation for a high suicide rate, the suicide rate in the USA is higher. Japan is currently #25, with a rate of about 15 per 100,000. The USA is #23, with a rate of about 16 per 100,000. Many of the countries ranked 1-23 do not have reputations for overwork. Japan simply talks about the effects of overwork, and actually made a word for it.

I used to take a nap when I working at home. Desk jobs are so mentally draining rather than physically that it's pretty much necessary to replenish your mind to successfully complete tasks. Even when I was working at the office I would take a short nap or just rest my eyes and mind on my breaks. Idgaf. What was super annoying was co-workers walking by trying to get my attention asking "Are you okay? Are you sick?" Like, f**k off let me rest.
I can barely sleep in my own bed. I would never be able to fall asleep around my colleagues, or even alone in my office.
I want to work somewhere where I take occasional working breaks during my nap.

False. Mariana causes many deaths from paranoia related activities and delayed reaction times of the users. Colorado did several stories on this when the state traffic incident rate went up noticably after they passed medical marijuana use.
HurlWurk: You state a strong opinion without any supporting evidence. BP readers would appreciate the name and circumstances of even one of the so called, "many deaths" you refer to. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Fact: According to an investigation conducted by Colorado Public Radio, "There have been numerous false reports of young adults overdosing from edibles, but while those have garnered national headlines in many anti-pot publications, even the D.E.A. says there have been no overdoses tied to THC" ... (Source ... https://www.cpr.org/show-segment/when-it-comes-to-colorados-marijuana-industry-congress-view-is-clouded-by-myth/ ) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Note: As far as traffic accidents ... "Those claims beg the question of where lawmakers are getting their data. In 2017, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released a study showing accidents were up by three percent in Colorado since voters allowed recreational marijuana, while the American Journal of Public Health released a study showing no increase in auto accidents due to marijuana. Critics also say the tests showing marijuana in drivers are flawed because THC stays in people’s bodies for as long as a month. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Agreed. I'm sure marijuana can cause problems but there seems to be a massive difference in likelihood of aggression. I watched a documentary years ago in which a British (I think) woman tried a driving exercise sober, drunk, and stoned, respectively, in which she was to reach a certain speed before hitting the brakes in time not to hit a collection of dolls sitting on the road. She succeeded sober, took out the dolls drunk, and couldn't get up to the required speed when high to successfully complete the task. While not scientific, it certainly seemed to match what I've seen all my life.

A study in Europe estimated 67% of cancer deaths were caused by genetics, 16-2/3% by smoking, and 16-2/3% by environmental exposure. American medical organizations push higher numbers and collect distorted numbers.
Aren't these "facts" meant to be moderated by BP? It's not hard to fact check content that is swiped from other sites!!
Now some of the scare stories about cannabis come from a few events. One, is that it is true the THC content of cannabis is higher now then in the past, and those who are new to either smoking, or ingesting it in either tea or edible form my not be ready for it. But that is why there are different strains. Indica is known to have different effects then Sativa. Hybrids balance the two out..Two kids get into some adults stash, and before anybody boohoos that. Kids have been getting into their parents liquor cabinets, since the invention of liquor cabinets. Or been nicking cigarettes to smoke behind the school after the bell rings. So, these kids now ingest something they weren't supposed to in the first place and end up getting sick. Now I've never know anyone in my long life of knowing smokers and smoking myself, known anyone to take a hit off a joint, or a rip off a bong and all of a sudden tear their clothes off and go rampaging into the night claiming they are the second coming.
You can get a heart attack from edibles. It’s happened to a couple of people. I looked it up once when I fell asleep after eating an edible and waking up to my chest pounding harder than it ever had on cocaine (which was scary enough). I almost called 911 but I was eventually able to get my heart rate down. I googled around and there were a couple entries in medical journals where people had heart attacks and died from edibles. Mine wasn’t even a big dose. Just a normal dose, and I hadn’t done other drugs.
Oh and what is a "normal" dose. What was the THC content, and how used to eating said edibles were you. Because it sounds a lot to me like, you one have never tried it before, or are making it up. To actually sit behind your keyboard and declare that cannabis is more dangerous then cocaine means you don't know what you are talking about.
Load More Replies...That is horribly sad. I wonder what was going through her mind as she was going through that.
My understanding, and I could be very wrong here, was that it was considered an honor to be chosen for sacrifice, and that the person being sacrificed was given a nicer afterlife. The sacrifices were to strengthen the gods and to postpone the end of the world. I seriously doubt any of that comforted the victims as they were dying, particularly the children. The people doing it felt they had a good reason to kill, but many horrific acts are committed in the name of religion.
Load More Replies...I have heard that there was another, a young girl and boy, who were found hugging, as they were chosen to be sacrificed - like this girl was.
It's not clear why the other two were there. Her diet changed drastically a year before her death, suggesting she had been selected and prepared for the "honor", but not the other two.
Load More Replies...Can you imagine being a parent and your child being chosen as a sacrifice? How did these people cope? Did they have babies for this reason? Because that would be one of the ultimate reasons to go child-free.
It was often an honor to be chosen for a sacrifice to the gods, depending on the beliefs of the culture. The parents may have believed that the child would be well cared for, honored, and respected in the afterlife. None of this justifies our modern conceptions or sensibilities towards how we would feel about child sacrifice, but we cannot force a modern lens onto history or cultures of the past. They had entirely different beliefs than we did, and should not be condemned for things they thought were good/beneficial. I disagree with human sacrifice for ANY reason, but I know some cultures in the past viewed it differently, and I cannot judge them by my modern standards.

I know this was a joke, but as it happens, orcas really are helicopter moms! They're one of the only animals besides us that goes through menopause, and scientists spent years trying to figure out the evolutionary advantage of survival past the ability to reproduce. It turns out that orca mothers maintain strong bonds with their male calves for their whole lives, even bringing them extra food, because male orcas are bigger and less agile and not as good at hunting. By caring for their sons, they maximize the odds of becoming grandmothers, which is the ultimate goal of evolution - for your children to live long enough to have more children. An orca grandma is so important that after she dies, her sons frequently decline and die within a year or so.

Looks like a computer chip. The lack of greenery is actually kind of sad, but I guess that's because I've never lived in a huge city
There's actually a lot of greenery. Besides Central Park, which is huge, there are neighborhood parks, smaller greenspaces full of flowers, trees along many of the streets, rooftop gardens. And lots of green areas reclaimed from former industrial areas, like The High Line and Riverside Park.
Load More Replies...It lacks greenery. Down here, the cities are so green, not only in the countless parks, but flanking roads, in car parks, every where.

At age 90 she sold her apartment for the right of occupancy and 2,500 francs a month. She outlived the purchaser by 2 years and received more than twice the value of her apt. She quit smoking at age 117, she stopped bicycling at age 100 after breaking her leg - she recovered and continued walking - she lived alone from age 88 until she was 110 and was forced into a nursing home because that winter the pipes froze in her apt (her hands became frost-bitten)
There is a suggestion that she died when in her twenties and that her much younger teenage sister took over her identity in order to avoid death duty taxes. A sensible thing to do at the time.
And she only died then because she was shot while climbing out a bedroom window by a jealous wife.
That's not a thing, but a very regional tradition. I've only heard about incidents like that some places in Jutland. Depends on the culture in the friend group.

Investigators tried 400 times to replicate someone locking themselves inside a similar bag. They couldn't make it work. A 2015 update indicates that he may have run afowl of Russian spy handlers by threatening to reveal a agent that they had planted in an intelligence agency.
I watched a documentary about it. MI6 said he had a sexual fetish about very enclosed spaces and it was an "accident" during sexual play. So investigators tried with regular people roughly the same body built as Gareth, escapologists, contortionists, no one was able to replicate it.

let's see. In my country, an iPhone goes for about 11-16 000 ZAR, or about $611-$889. Assuming the top-end model, that would be ZAR 320 000. About enough to pay for half a flat in my city, but you can probably find a house in a rural area that would sell for that.

No. This has nothing to do with desire for sex; it's purely biological. Sex reduces the production of stress-related hormones like cortisol, and increases the production of dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and prolactin. It doesn't matter in the slightest whether you're asexual or sexual.

I’ve heard of this bear. She’s a spectacled bear who was rescued after being burned in a circus. She lived the rest of her life at a wildlife sanctuary, but I think she died recently. I heard the story a long time ago, so I forgot most of the details.
Did more research. Got the story completely wrong. Nothing right. Turns out all of the female spectacled bears at a zoo in Germany mysteriously lost their hair for unknown reasons a few years ago. Some believe that it’s a genetic issue, because most of the bears at the zoo are related. Others say it was due to malnutrition.

With growing overpopulation, this might just be a glimpse of the future for all of us, but urgh…!
Overpopulation of an area can only occur artificially via immigration. Humans and animals stop mating if they sense a lack of land or resources, this is why animals in captivity won't breed if they have less area than their normal hunting territory. Immigration CAUSES increased population by removing population from already underpopulated areas. If you are worried about population first ban immigration and travel.

Okay, so it's "loosely based on true events." It's "Netflix's scariest movie made", although of all time is up for debate. The real story is a teenager, Estefania Lazaro, tried a Ouija board to contact a dead boyfriend of one her friend's (not hers), who did die in a motorcycle accident. She was at her school (not at home). She got caught by a teacher, and her friends described a smoke like substance entering Estefania's nose and mouth. Over the next 6 months, Estefania suffered seizures and hallucinated evil creatures in her bedroom at night. She died in a hospital from unknown causes. After she died her parent's home became haunted, as "verified by police". Her case has never been solved as to what was really wrong with her.

Watched it, enjoyed it. Wouldn't have walked out of the theatre at any point. It wasn't so much scary as spooky. The suspense was great and the last half hour was quite intense. There were scenes that should've been jumpscares but instead they were tense. Two things: don't play with Ouija boards, and f*ck children who don't listen to older siblings. I'm looking at you, Antonito. You had ONE job. LOL Also, the movie is in Spanish, Spain Spanish, I found it with Hungarian subtitles. You might be able to find it with English subs if you don't speak Spanish. It was a good movie, honestly.

Hate this. But because it's happening to women it's ok. If a trans man started winning all men sports, men would lose their minds and this would have ended a long time ago.
There is no controversy here for those of us who think success in sports is completely unimportant.
Thankfully, the pendulum is swinging back towards common sense. Nothing against trans people whatsoever, but it's clearly unfair in a sporting context and dangerous in women-only spaces (which are there for a reason). The worry is that so many people saw this as a problem long before the issues arose, but the loud minority got their way - it's taken some unfortunate incidents to redress the balance.
