Ah, Iceland, one of the most magical places on Earth and on this side of the Milky Way. The beauty of the country, however, goes deeper than the gorgeous fjords, (sometimes) slumbering volcanoes, and windswept tourists you’ll find on the covers of brochures (though the nature there is truly stunning and a large part of the draw).

Iceland embodies the essence of community, happiness, and health, and we hope to show this to you in this list, compiled by our travel-hungry Bored Panda team. As you’re scrolling down, upvote the Icelandic facts that caught your attention, and let us know what you think of the country in the comments. If you’ve ever been to Iceland yourselves, Pandas, then we’re itching to hear all about your adventures there!

If you’re in the mood for some more Icelandic awesomeness after this list, then you’ll want to check out Bored Panda’s earlier articles about the fabulous country here and here.

We need to do this with universal health care. Our politicians have a 'f you, I got mine' mentality when tens of thousands of us are declaring medical bankruptcy each year. Hell, a woman was just charged $700 for waiting in the ER for 7 hours waiting to be seen. She gave up and left and got that bill in the mail. She was seen by no one, just sat there waiting. This has to stop.

Honestly. The US is so f****d that all the trumplican women would vote against it. I'm GenX and had an argument with a young millennial about feminism. I said she can thank feminists for the job she had, her own bank account, her own apartment, being able to drive, for the pants she was wearing. Nothing got through to her. She said we have all these things so we don't need feminists. Yes, because of feminists. There's just have no logic between. Blows my mind.

This strike took place in Finland actually Just about every woman in the country took part. No cooking, cleaning, childcare...nada, nil, nothing. Finnish women call it the day of burning meat! ;>) The men took it to heart, god love 'em.

Women are generally suppressed in the middle east and Africa. In US, we have more power, and our entitled attitudes made us willing to fight.

It isn’t an overstatement to say that the Icelandic people are some of the happiest on our planet. The 2021 World Happiness Report ranked Iceland as the fourth happiest country on Earth, right behind Denmark in second place, Switzerland in third, and just ahead of the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden.

Finland was given the number one spot in this year’s World Happiness Report update (its fourth consecutive year!) whereas Afghanistan was ranked as the unhappiest country in the world.

My village has one postal worker who is born here, delivers post his whole live, and joins the pub every day after work. If you send post to this village addressed 'the idiot with the fat cat who moved in 12 years ago' there's a good change it'll be delivered right the first time.

The difference between the overall happiness index in the top few countries is marginal at best, meaning that European, especially Northern European countries are consistently the best places to live. If happiness is your thing that is.

According to the World Population Review and the World Happiness Report, Iceland has the highest feeling of social support in the world, even ahead of such countries as Finland, Norway, and Denmark, which tied for second place in terms of this metric.

Currently, Iceland has a population of just 371k, according to Encyclopædia Britannica’s latest figures. That means the country is incredibly sparsely populated. Or, as Arctic Adventures puts it, that’s around 3 people per square kilometer (that’s roughly 8 people per square mile for our British and American Pandas).

They might be a small nation, but they’re tight-knit and really do know how to live a high-quality life. The proof is in the pudding, or in this case, the data, but it’s far better to experience the hospitality in person than to read about it or to look at just the stats and figures.

When we talk about Iceland being magical, it’s not all just fantasy and evocative words. According to the Nordic Visitor Blog, around a third of Icelanders believe in the existence of elves. Meanwhile, there are even spokespeople for the elves present when constructions take place in certain lava fields in Iceland.

I like this. I’ve never understood why people throw coins into fountains. It’s kind of meaningless to throw coins in fountains.

The coins may be recovered from a fountain and given to a local charity.

I think its more a matter of symbolism than superstition. Much the same as when a bride carries something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue... I don't think anyone really believes it accomplishes anything, it just references the past. Where I live, coins thrown in fountains are raked up and given to charity, and since we have so many tourists, and so many fountains, a great deal of money is collected. In my opinion, coins thrown in fountains causes no harm and does a great deal of good. Coins thrown into springs is another matter entirely.

Some of the reasons why Icelanders are so happy include their strong sense of community, their focus on equality and inclusion, and their high levels of transparency. This means that the Icelandic people have very high levels of trust in their governments while they also boast a low crime rate. Statista notes that there were 167 prisoners in the entire country in 2010. This number fell to 136 in 2018.

Anywhere you bury pipes in Iceland, you're going to get hot or warm water. The cold water is stored in a huge tank above ground, so it's cold. We had an active thermal vent in our back pasture, but that's not uncommon since a tectonic plate runs right through Iceland. Makes things convenient sometimes!

Unless it’s done properly...we had that too, but they were so well isolated that we still had snow and frost there. Only a few bigger distribution point, like at a school or bigger settlements, they would clear the pathways due to heat.

I saw some people ages ago from America complaining about how dangerous these are, and basically stating they would never work over there because the general driving habits don't leave potential space to allow for the possibility of accidents or having to stop quickly.

Of course, all the natural beauty, stunning settings, and fresh air don’t help your chances of wanting to settle down in Iceland, either. Quite literally everyone that we personally know who’s been to Iceland has expressed their deep love of the country and has promised to go back. Hey, it might be an amateurish scientific study, but the sentiment is real.

We are very aware of our nature here in Iceland and try to keep it clean ourselves. Just our rivers all over have the most clean water in the world and we like to keep it that way. I have a river behind my house and it's so refreshing and even has some awesome salmon to fish if you want. Maybe 15 meters behind the house 🏠 🥰

Some time ago, Bored Panda spoke about traveling etiquette and the importance of learning local costumes with Professor Christine Vogt from Arizona State University. She said that it’s vital that we do proper background research about the country we’re traveling to before setting out on the adventure itself. Analyze the customs, get to know the language. “More than likely that is what draws a person to visit a certain place. The more local knowledge a traveler has, the more a traveler can feel like a local and fit in," she said.

"Local customs can include how a traveler dresses, eats, uses a cell phone, etc. When a traveler is out in a community such as walking in a downtown area or eating in a restaurant, these local customs can come into play. There is (Or was dunno if its still there) an island called Lanzarote, among the Canary Islands, that we went to as a field trip as a kid and the entire island looks like that. I don't even know if its an inhabited or not but that area certainly wasn't. I remember being told I got upset because I thought: all the naughty boys had knocked the buildings down. I was a weird kid.

Meanwhile, Professor Vogt added that travelers should refrain from taking any historic artifacts home with them as souvenirs. Some of the ways that the locals can make sure nothing gets taken is to set up signs that discourage people from pocketing what they shouldn’t. If that doesn’t work, penalties for stealing and setting up cameras to catch rule-breakers might work. It’s also a good idea to set up a display of all the items that tourists had stolen and then returned later on.

While there we stumbled across a place where there is "a bridge between two continents." On one side is the European plate and on the other is the North American plate, separating at the rate of 2 cm per year.

In New Zealand, when we drive from Christchurch through the Southern Alps to the West Coast, there is a point, on the west side of the Alps, where we leave the Pacific plate and move on to the Australian plate. During a scenic train ride from Christchurch to the West Coast, several years ago, the guy on the microphone told us that we were now on the Australian plate, so when we arrived in Greymouth – town on the West Coast – please have our Passports ready. Two young tourists in the seat next to me started rummaging through their packs...

Life is too short to not enjoy good food. I'll deal with the extra 20+ pounds, but at least I'll be happier than those "Housewives" (of Beverly Hills, of Atlanta, of Orange County, etc) who weigh all their food, basically live on grilled fish and salad, and exercise obsessively - all while drinking copious amounts of alcohol (yeah, wine is alcohol). No thanks.

In Barbados, McDonald's packed their all beef patties into a suitcase and left. The islanders simply weren't interested. Considering how popular Maccie D's is in the UK, if it failed... well I dunno. Wimpy failed as did Wendy's, while Burger King is struggling. Wonder if any of these managed to make it in Iceland.

It seems little less impressive when living in a town which has the old part from 13th century still intact with more than one church 🙃

The Cool Originals are the Ranch flavor in the USA. It comes from salad dressing of the same flavor that is called Ranch Dressing. The name was created when the original creator bought a ranch that he named Hidden Valley Ranch...and the rest is USA artery-clogging history.

so some etymology: Þ and ð are "th", so this is "thin hrathi" - in english, "thine rather". Rather originally meant 'faster' or 'quicker', as in "i'd rather eat pie", meaning "i'd sooner eat pie". So, "thy speed". It also appears in the name "roger", from Beowulf king Hrothgar, meaning "rapid spear". Gar = spear, compare to "gore" as in, "gored by a bull". You're welcome.

It is located by the farm Varmahlíð and the sea lake Holtsós and the cave Steinahellir. Some local started this tradition to put bras on the fence couple of years back, as they were having a party and stole some bras from a local lady nearby. Since then people passing by have donated bras to the fence.

Perhaps just needs a re-topping. If that were in my area, it would probably be a 'built-up' roof consisting of several layers of synthetic felt with liquid asphalt mopped over it. The gray bit is fine gravel spread over it before the final asphalt dries. The gravel is there to protect the asphalt from degradation by UV light, and to reflect light in general so the roof doesn't get hot enough to melt.

Ingredients 4 1/2 cups (477g) medium rye flour 2 teaspoons salt 1 tablespoon baking powder 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 2 cups (454g) buttermilk 1/2 cup (168g) honey 1/2 cup (170g) molasses Instructions Preheat the oven to 325°F with a rack in the center position. Weigh your flour or measure it by gently spooning into a cup, then sweeping off any excess. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, honey, and molasses. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring to combine. Transfer the batter to a lightly greased 9” pain de mie (pullman) pan and smooth the top. Lightly grease the lid, and place the lid on the pan. Bake the bread for 2 hours. Turn off the oven and remove the lid from the pan. Leave the loaf in the turned-off oven for another 15 minutes, then remove from the oven and turn out of the pan onto a cooling rack

Cool completely before slicing thinly and serving with butter or your favorite savory toppings. Pickled herring and smoked salmon are traditional, but cheese (anything from salty aged to soft mild) certainly wouldn’t be amiss, either. Store leftover bread tightly wrapped at room temperature for several days. Freeze for longer storage.

Most people think that satellite dishes are aimed in a direction perpendicular to the plane formed by the rim of the dish, this isn't so. The dish surface is angled to reflect radio waves toward the antenna itself. If someone didn't know that, they would assume that these dishes were pointing down instead of at almost 90°

You can tell it's a small country...so many of these posts are repeats of previous posts, or duplicates of things other countries also have. Canada, Germany so far have a lot of these same things, so they aren't really "unique from the rest of the world items". Don't get me wrong, I still admire Iceland and its culture and so forth. Just poking fun at the list.

Last I knew they were called Tilt 'n Turn windows. I had them growing up in Scotland, brilliant windows. Triple glazed, blocks most noise and insulates like crazy, moves in 3 directions so you can clean the outside glass, and it has a locking system where you can tilt the top of the window inwards to allow air to circulate, but burglers can't push the window further and break in. Brilliant window design. American needs these.

In the UK, cold and hot water faucets are traditionally separate because you could drink the cold water - which came from a mains supply - but not the warm water, which usually came from a cistern. The warm water was often contaminated and by keeping the faucets separate, there was no cross contamination.

But you would have to fill the sink multiple times to get your hands clean since the water will get dirty and also soapy. Also, you would never get your hands clean like that in a dirty sink like that
