Ah, Iceland, one of the most magical places on Earth and on this side of the Milky Way. The beauty of the country, however, goes deeper than the gorgeous fjords, (sometimes) slumbering volcanoes, and windswept tourists you’ll find on the covers of brochures (though the nature there is truly stunning and a large part of the draw).
Iceland embodies the essence of community, happiness, and health, and we hope to show this to you in this list, compiled by our travel-hungry Bored Panda team. As you’re scrolling down, upvote the Icelandic facts that caught your attention, and let us know what you think of the country in the comments. If you’ve ever been to Iceland yourselves, Pandas, then we’re itching to hear all about your adventures there!
If you’re in the mood for some more Icelandic awesomeness after this list, then you’ll want to check out Bored Panda’s earlier articles about the fabulous country here and here.

Iceland Has The World’s Highest Gender Equality
We need to do this with universal health care. Our politicians have a 'f you, I got mine' mentality when tens of thousands of us are declaring medical bankruptcy each year. Hell, a woman was just charged $700 for waiting in the ER for 7 hours waiting to be seen. She gave up and left and got that bill in the mail. She was seen by no one, just sat there waiting. This has to stop.
Agree wholeheartedly! The healthcare industry in the US is criminal.
Load More Replies...Honestly. The US is so f****d that all the trumplican women would vote against it. I'm GenX and had an argument with a young millennial about feminism. I said she can thank feminists for the job she had, her own bank account, her own apartment, being able to drive, for the pants she was wearing. Nothing got through to her. She said we have all these things so we don't need feminists. Yes, because of feminists. There's just have no logic between. Blows my mind.
Wow. I didn't know BP automatically censored replies.

Load More Replies...It isn’t an overstatement to say that the Icelandic people are some of the happiest on our planet. The 2021 World Happiness Report ranked Iceland as the fourth happiest country on Earth, right behind Denmark in second place, Switzerland in third, and just ahead of the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden.
Finland was given the number one spot in this year’s World Happiness Report update (its fourth consecutive year!) whereas Afghanistan was ranked as the unhappiest country in the world.

The difference between the overall happiness index in the top few countries is marginal at best, meaning that European, especially Northern European countries are consistently the best places to live. If happiness is your thing that is.
According to the World Population Review and the World Happiness Report, Iceland has the highest feeling of social support in the world, even ahead of such countries as Finland, Norway, and Denmark, which tied for second place in terms of this metric.

Elephant Rock - Don't Miss Out The Natural Statue Of Gaint Elephant Near Heimaey Island, Iceland
Currently, Iceland has a population of just 371k, according to Encyclopædia Britannica’s latest figures. That means the country is incredibly sparsely populated. Or, as Arctic Adventures puts it, that’s around 3 people per square kilometer (that’s roughly 8 people per square mile for our British and American Pandas).
They might be a small nation, but they’re tight-knit and really do know how to live a high-quality life. The proof is in the pudding, or in this case, the data, but it’s far better to experience the hospitality in person than to read about it or to look at just the stats and figures.

Load More Replies...I doubt that the waterfall makes the rainbow to support pride. In fact, I think that it doesn't care about human matters at all 😉 But the rainbow walks are neat idea.
Then rainbow represents God's desire not to judge, but we have used it to call what is evil good and what is good evil. One does not have to be a slave to same sex attraction to be whole.
When I went to Scandinavia and Iceland during the Trump administration, there was some sort of nationwide gay pride thing in all the countries. Rainbow flags in hotel lobbies etc. I was really amazed and pleased about being in First World countries for a change
When we talk about Iceland being magical, it’s not all just fantasy and evocative words. According to the Nordic Visitor Blog, around a third of Icelanders believe in the existence of elves. Meanwhile, there are even spokespeople for the elves present when constructions take place in certain lava fields in Iceland.

Iceland Does Not Want To Deal With Your Stupidity - And I Think That’s Beautiful
I like this. I’ve never understood why people throw coins into fountains. It’s kind of meaningless to throw coins in fountains.
The coins may be recovered from a fountain and given to a local charity.
Load More Replies...When the country that religiously believes in elves tells you that you are being stupid, you know you are being stupid!
I think its more a matter of symbolism than superstition. Much the same as when a bride carries something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue... I don't think anyone really believes it accomplishes anything, it just references the past. Where I live, coins thrown in fountains are raked up and given to charity, and since we have so many tourists, and so many fountains, a great deal of money is collected. In my opinion, coins thrown in fountains causes no harm and does a great deal of good. Coins thrown into springs is another matter entirely.
Too bad they don't have this in Yellowstone - but the idiots would probably not take heed anyway.
Some of the reasons why Icelanders are so happy include their strong sense of community, their focus on equality and inclusion, and their high levels of transparency. This means that the Icelandic people have very high levels of trust in their governments while they also boast a low crime rate. Statista notes that there were 167 prisoners in the entire country in 2010. This number fell to 136 in 2018.
Modern Icelandic Houses Are Built With Geothermally Heated Water Pipes Under Their Sidewalks So Icelanders Never Have To Shovel In Winter
You'd need an active volcano nearby to feed the pipes, but yeah it would be amazing if it was possible :)
Load More Replies...Anywhere you bury pipes in Iceland, you're going to get hot or warm water. The cold water is stored in a huge tank above ground, so it's cold. We had an active thermal vent in our back pasture, but that's not uncommon since a tectonic plate runs right through Iceland. Makes things convenient sometimes!
Town In Iceland Paints A 3D Pedestrian Crossing To Slow Traffic
That looks so cool, and I'm pretty sure I'd get pretty spooked if I drove down that road for the first time
They should do that here in the US, it would hopefully limit the ever increasing number of idiots treating stop signs as yield or just blowing them off

Quite literally everyone that we personally know who’s been to Iceland has expressed their deep love of the country and has promised to go back. Hey, it might be an amateurish scientific study, but the sentiment is real.

Some time ago, Bored Panda spoke about traveling etiquette and the importance of learning local costumes with Professor Christine Vogt from Arizona State University. She said that it’s vital that we do proper background research about the country we’re traveling to before setting out on the adventure itself. Analyze the customs, get to know the language. “More than likely that is what draws a person to visit a certain place. The more local knowledge a traveler has, the more a traveler can feel like a local and fit in," she said.

I told my family I want to be turned into a tree when I die, (they have pods that can do that). It they thought I'd be weird and creepy if a branched or leave touched them lol
Not weird or creepy at all - it is a beautiful idea! Unfortunately not allowed (yet) here in Germany as we still have cemetery obligation, but I intend to be cremated and buried in a forest without any special markings of the place if the regulations do not loosen up until I move on...

Went To A Beach In Iceland And Took A Full-Color Picture That Looks Entirely Grayscale
There is (Or was dunno if its still there) an island called Lanzarote, among the Canary Islands, that we went to as a field trip as a kid and the entire island looks like that. I don't even know if its an inhabited or not but that area certainly wasn't. I remember being told I got upset because I thought: all the naughty boys had knocked the buildings down. I was a weird kid.
Oh lord, someone could have made a revolutionary new photograph form by standing there.
Beautiful. Bundle up, and just stand there, taking it all in: the sounds, the spray, the wind.*sigh*
When I was little I thought every beach was like this but the white ones were rare and only on tropical islands! I believe I was wrong!
Why wouldn't you think that, growing up there (I assume)? 😂😂
Load More Replies...Meanwhile, Professor Vogt added that travelers should refrain from taking any historic artifacts home with them as souvenirs. Some of the ways that the locals can make sure nothing gets taken is to set up signs that discourage people from pocketing what they shouldn’t. If that doesn’t work, penalties for stealing and setting up cameras to catch rule-breakers might work. It’s also a good idea to set up a display of all the items that tourists had stolen and then returned later on.

so some etymology: Þ and ð are "th", so this is "thin hrathi" - in english, "thine rather". Rather originally meant 'faster' or 'quicker', as in "i'd rather eat pie", meaning "i'd sooner eat pie". So, "thy speed". It also appears in the name "roger", from Beowulf king Hrothgar, meaning "rapid spear". Gar = spear, compare to "gore" as in, "gored by a bull". You're welcome.

Alas my love you do me wrong To cast me off discourteously; And I have loved you oh so long Delighting in your company. Greensleeves was my delight, Greensleeves my heart of gold Greensleeves was my heart of joy And who but my lady Greensleeves. I have been ready at your hand To grant whatever thou would'st crave; I have waged both life and land Your love and goodwill for to have. Greensleeves was my delight, Greensleeves my heart of gold Greensleeves was my heart of joy And who but my lady Greensleeves. Thy petticoat of slender white With gold embroidered gorgeously; Thy petticoat of silk and white And these I bought gladly. Greensleeves was my delight, Greensleeves my heart of gold Greensleeves was my heart of joy And who but my lady Greensleeves.

This is actually a real problem in Iceland. Tourists are peeing and pooping all over and leaving their s**t and toilet paper laying around the side of the road. Not even buried or covered:(
A Bra Fence In Iceland
It is located by the farm Varmahlíð and the sea lake Holtsós and the cave Steinahellir. Some local started this tradition to put bras on the fence couple of years back, as they were having a party and stole some bras from a local lady nearby. Since then people passing by have donated bras to the fence.

Perhaps just needs a re-topping. If that were in my area, it would probably be a 'built-up' roof consisting of several layers of synthetic felt with liquid asphalt mopped over it. The gray bit is fine gravel spread over it before the final asphalt dries. The gravel is there to protect the asphalt from degradation by UV light, and to reflect light in general so the roof doesn't get hot enough to melt.

Ingredients 4 1/2 cups (477g) medium rye flour 2 teaspoons salt 1 tablespoon baking powder 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 2 cups (454g) buttermilk 1/2 cup (168g) honey 1/2 cup (170g) molasses Instructions Preheat the oven to 325°F with a rack in the center position. Weigh your flour or measure it by gently spooning into a cup, then sweeping off any excess. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, honey, and molasses. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring to combine. Transfer the batter to a lightly greased 9” pain de mie (pullman) pan and smooth the top. Lightly grease the lid, and place the lid on the pan. Bake the bread for 2 hours. Turn off the oven and remove the lid from the pan. Leave the loaf in the turned-off oven for another 15 minutes, then remove from the oven and turn out of the pan onto a cooling rack
Cool completely before slicing thinly and serving with butter or your favorite savory toppings. Pickled herring and smoked salmon are traditional, but cheese (anything from salty aged to soft mild) certainly wouldn’t be amiss, either. Store leftover bread tightly wrapped at room temperature for several days. Freeze for longer storage.

We have these in Sweden too, so that gypsies don't have to throw all the garbage out when looking for recyclable bottes (which are worth about 15 cents each).

The Windows In Iceland - What Is The Story Behind Them?
I don't understand the question.. did this person never see these window things (I'm not English, I don't know the name) before? They are very common in all of Europe
Last I knew they were called Tilt 'n Turn windows. I had them growing up in Scotland, brilliant windows. Triple glazed, blocks most noise and insulates like crazy, moves in 3 directions so you can clean the outside glass, and it has a locking system where you can tilt the top of the window inwards to allow air to circulate, but burglers can't push the window further and break in. Brilliant window design. American needs these.

In the UK, cold and hot water faucets are traditionally separate because you could drink the cold water - which came from a mains supply - but not the warm water, which usually came from a cistern. The warm water was often contaminated and by keeping the faucets separate, there was no cross contamination.

That’s what the plug (see the chain behind the soap) is for: just plug the sink, fill it with both, hot and cold water and wash your hands. It’s not that difficult.
But you would have to fill the sink multiple times to get your hands clean since the water will get dirty and also soapy. Also, you would never get your hands clean like that in a dirty sink like that

Everytime I had to go outside, wether to get the mail or left something in the car, I had to suite up like I was going on an Mt Everest expedition. I like cold until it hits 10 f or below. After that it becomes a pain. Three years of this and decided that was enough and moved back to Colorado.
