For the two other comments posted here -"fixing the f*** male culture" and " more people reporting the assault" To fix the male culture - that takes time, where as an assault takes seconds.To report an assault means that an assault already occurred. That's corrective, not preventative. Can you tell just be looking at a guy if he's likely to assault you? Think date rape. Why do we take self-defense classes, carry pepper spray, avoid walking alone, etc. To protect ourselves. If changing my behavior keeps me safe, I'll do that rather than being in police station while my assault is photographed for the record.

Cases of groping, men sitting right up beside a female passenger when there are other seats available and other awful behaviour are high in the big cities, especially in packed cars during commuter hours when people are already stuffed close together. Women-only cars only operate during these rush hours and have reduced both the incidents of groping accusations and also incidents of wrongful accusations that were only an accident in an overly crowded car, so fewer innocent people being accused of abhorrent behaviour. I agree with other posters that said this is an unfortunately necessary system. Most guys are probably fine but the actions of a minority of people spoil things for everyone. Don't knock the system, knock the male-dominated culture and politics that allows so many men to believe that this assault is ok thattbarassauagainsiswomen

This really is good for women. I have only very rarely witnessed sexual harassment or perving on women on the train, particularly compared to places like NYC or Chicago, but it certainly does happen. The major downside (for me) is that I wasn't aware of them when I first arrived in Japan, and accidentally boarded one without paying very close attention. It took me a few minutes to realize why everybody was staring, and made a quick and embarrassed exit to the next car (despite the obvious pink-and-white signs in the photo, you don't always notice that sort of thing when you're in a human crush on a busy platform, especially when you're already trying to filter and interpret hundreds of Chinese characters). On the other hand, I sometimes notice men, usually older kaishain, that get on and sit in these cars with full knowledge without giving two effs.

most men are taught this isn't ok but there are evil people that don't care. Its not only women that get unwanted harassment i am happy that these are a thing to protect women but i hate how people think that men don't know better or need be taught better that's not really the case the men that do this are just evil and don't care.

We have this in Indonesia. What we dont have sometimes are men with common sense that they still hop into this train anyway. Probably illiterate, too.

So does all the local trains in Indian cities. That's for women safety. But no one's gonna acknowledge that.

They have these in India, too, for the same reason, unfortunately. It's just shocking that men can't keep their hands to themselves! But it doesn't happen everywhere. Riding the Fukuoka subway at morning rush hour, I was totally ignored and nobody's hands came near me (except my husband's). I don't know if I received special treatment because I was a gaijin (foreigner) or I was just lucky, but that's my experience.
