There’s so much information on the internet and social media out there that it feels like our attention spans have suffered. So in the Digital Age, it’s increasingly important to provide information in a compact way. Otherwise, your audience might not have the patience to read what you have to say—even if it’s brilliant.
One social media project that embraces this bite-sized format is the ‘Factologys’ Instagram page. The curator of the account collects and shares some of the most interesting facts about the world, and we’re here for it. We’ve compiled a list of the most intriguing facts to share with you, Pandas. Check them out below, upvote the ones that surprised you, and don’t forget to follow ‘Factologys’ if you enjoyed their content.

Another "feel-good-story" that is quite the opposite. He Is a kind of heroe, of course. But on the other side he should not have had to do this. The problem is the system that send people to debt for seeking education.
He didnt have to do this , he chose to do that and that’s the difference . Shame on the system for sure ! I believe loads of countries, defined rich or poor, would face the reality of students that cannot afford education. I’m not the one to believe in conspiracy theories, but I believe if education is hard/expensive/ only obtainable by a referral- it can cause: Poor health, Shorter life expectancy, Poverty, Unemployment, Lower salary, Gender inequality, Social isolation, Illegal activities. Awful Really
Load More Replies...Legend, or a tragic indictment of an education system that denies talented students access to higher education because of lack of access to finances?
Both. Two things can be true at the same time. The system is messed up, and this man did what he could to help with that problem.
Load More Replies...His jeans lasted that long?! I can hardly find a pair of Levi's that last 6 months!
Not a legend. Most legends are made up - in whole or in part. This guy is the real deal.
She wouldn’t have had the heart attack if she did
Load More Replies...This is supposedly true. A man had a heart attack and recovered. He sued the doctor (the article didn't say why). At court, he had another heart attack. He was saved by the doctor he was sueing.
I work with doctors, I can't get 4 of them to agree on something, if there were 15, the patient would be dying while they are arguing.
Does anyone else find it kind of crazy that airlines don’t have a medical professional on board planes in case someone has an emergency? I imagine the hassle is worth people not dying on your planes.
They keep a very advanced kit on board and statistically speaking there is likely at minimum a nurse on any flight of significant distance. Had them page a medical professional on a flight a few years ago. They pulled a huge kit down from the ceiling, it had IVs and all. The nurse was able to treat the patient successfully.
Load More Replies...Just read a book review in the paper (yes, I still read the paper) where it was claimed that when all the hot shot cardiac surgeons went to a convention, the mortality from heart attacks went down 15%. "Random Acts of Medicine" by Jena and Worsham.
My feeling is that whether there were cardiologists on board or not she would have survived...because there was no way they would have performed open heart surgery on a plane so she would have lived long enough for the plane to land & for her to get to a hospital. If a heart attack is going to be immediately fatal, you gonna die. 15 cardiologists present or not!
Can we just take all the women and children from Iran and Afghanistan (if they would like), and relocate them to any other country that treats them as equals please.
What country treats women as men's equals? I would like to move there.
Load More Replies...If it was a matter of race or colour, the world would be up in arms. Men abusing women is institutionalised and normalised in some countries.
This. How is the treatment of women in these countries any different than apartheid? Why isn't it treated as such?
Load More Replies...Ok if she doesn’t wanna wear a hijab don’t make her wear a hijab. It should be a personal choice not a requirement
This makes me so happy because I am Iranian. My dad, his brother, and his mom escaped from Iran during the war. His dad was caught and stayed behind. I still never get to see my grandpa, but it brings me hope for other children in countries like Iran. As a half Iranian girl myself, this makes me so proud to see.
Good on her! I have little problem with people wearing the hijab (I don't agree with the need for it personally, but I respect your right to chose!) As long as they aren't forced to wear one! Either by family or government!
Because she wouldn't bow to a religious patriarchy.
Load More Replies...The ‘Factologys’ Instagram page was created in May 2019. Over the past few years, the curator of the account has grown the project to nearly 55k followers. According to the digital creator, all of the facts that they post on the account are “true and verified.”
They also encourage all social media users to send them a message with their own questions that they’d like answered. Whether about history, science, psychology, or anything else.
In Ireland we get a text message telling us our blood was used and in what hospital, last time mine was used for new born babys 🥰
UK too. One of mine was used in the Radcliffe when a friend was in for heart surgery. I pretend to myself that she got it
Load More Replies...That's a good idea. More people would donate more often, if they can visualize the person they're helping.
I love this, it would make you feel happy to know you have helped someone.
Just by donating you are helping someone :) sometimes indirectly, but even if your blood is used for tests, it might contribute to discovering a medicine/ treatment that saves millions

His son crown prince Håkon did the same thing and married a divorced single mom for love. Rumour has it that he threatened to abdicate if they wouldn't let him marry her. Good on them I say.
Would have been hella hypocritical if they did, so yes. Agreed.

Such spelling errors always make me doubt the **FACTS** they are putting out there. Spelling does matter.

CNN reports that people’s attention spans have taken a huge hit over the past two decades. Back in 2004, the average attention that people could focus on a screen was around 2.5 minutes. These days, it’s barely 47 seconds.
As we’ve explained on Bored Panda recently, the way that people consume the news has been changing quite a bit in recent years and decades. For one, folks read and watch the news from a far broader selection of sources and platforms than before. However, the downside is that there’s so much information that it has to be presented in small bits.
I find they look like common palms, as nobody cuts the dead leaves, it stacks up
I think I'll add this to my ever expanding bucket list! This are amazing.
All of these men employed women to work out the math. These women were called "calculators" and you'll almost never know their names.
Wrong timing between your comment and the picture. What you describe is mainly related to 19th century astronomy, a discipline that involve a LOT of numeric calculus. The picture here depicts the 1927 Solvay congress members. 1920/1930 physics involves algebric calculus, and very few numeric calculus.

This is the conference on quantum mechanics where Einstein, in an argument with Nils Bohr famously said, "God does not play dice." Less famous is Bohr's response, "Einstein, don't tell God what to do."

In the Digital Age, news and other outlets have adapted to this shortening attention span by writing catchy (and sometimes clickbaity) headlines. They also use images and different formats on different platforms to present the news in a fun, engaging, but brief manner. When everyone’s fighting over your attention, it becomes crucial that you stand out from the crowd without compromising the quality of the information. That might involve using photos, videos, cool graphics, quirky quizzes, or even maps alongside the text.
Now that I know this, as I look at the picture of the screwdriver, all I can say is, DUH
For the screw driver in the picture I'd say it's more of a happy coincidence than a design feature. There is not really much of anything bracing the shank of the driver in the plastic handle so too much torque, as would be applied by a wrench, would likely break the handle.
Ugh, this does work. I did it working on my first car, a badly engineered '82 Chevette. Why are commenters today so sure something they know nothing about is fake? We're not speculating on an ancient culture, this is real life. And it's not a coincidence, they absolutely did this one purpose.
Load More Replies...*Some* screwdrivers are designed so you can use another tool to increase torque. Besides the hexagonal handles, some have a shaft that's square and many have a hole in the handle. You can use pliers on any screwdriver, but I wouldn't call that a design to allow using another tool.
I would have asked for 10,000 and then mucked about looking for stings, well that is if I wasn't allergic to bees. Sighs....another non starter.
Load More Replies...Sort of a sad way to go. Still, honey bees look more scary than fuzzy lil bumble bees
Load More Replies...Thank you, Mr. Todd, for cutting that deal and enduring the pain: that movie is awesome.
I love Tony Todd, I love Candyman. His voice calling Helen's name both terrifies and arouses me lol
Good movie though. Social commentary and horror all rolled into one. The newest sequel is also good. (My only complaint about the original is that Trevor only says Helen's name 4 times before she appears and kills him.)
IDC if it’s a million per sting. I would not let bees sting me.
Probably how I'm going to die. Petting something I shouldn't be petting.
They are Both very Handsome! We humans are Supposed to Look After & Cherish all God's special Creatures!! The Four Legged or Finned or Animal World!!
However, that doesn’t mean that long-form content has gone the way of the dodo. In-depth reporting and analyses still have their place in the world because not everything can be summarized into a punchy headline with a cool photo. And consuming the news this way helps lengthen your attention span.

Load More Replies...I see colored flashing and swirling geometric patterns when I close my eyes
i see explosions of bright glowing colors when i close my eyes...what is that called?
Phosphenes. Cells inside your own eyes produce biophotons (light particles) as part of the normal process for how light is absorbed by the atoms in your eyes - it's complicated but basically atoms in your eyes create and emit particles of light, as well as absorbing them from outside. So the swirly colours you see are actually being generated by cells inside your own eyeball.
Load More Replies...Me who sees brownish-red and purple and pink and green: ...
Yes. (See above). You mean tiny, tiny little dots that collectively form bigger pink and purple and brownish-red spots?
Load More Replies...The bee dies after leaving its stinger and the stinger will pulse and bury itself deeper after the bee is gone.
I fact checked this. Aparantly only honey bee workers die after stinging. Other species of bee, such as the bumble bee can sting repeatedly without dying.
Load More Replies...I've been stung alot - the last time , it flew into my helmet, had visor up, I got a fright jerked my head and it flew up my nose and stung me - felt like a hammer to the face - I was screaming as rode home - snot and tears falling - I had to get a torch to look up my nose to tweeze it out - face swollen for 3 days
Holy freaking OW!!! Worst I got was several wasp stings right between the eyes. I can't imagine the pain of inside the nose!

That would explain why bee stings hurt much more than getting pricked with a needle!!
It’s not just the format of the news that’s important. You have to know what sources you can rely on the most because, in this day and age, very few people have the time and energy to double-check every single claim in an article.
According to the BBC, start off by checking who wrote the piece, and how reliable they are. Take a peek at the other articles they’ve worked on, and check for bias and (in)accuracy.
I hate this 'fact' though. There's a reason matches were always more popular than lighters until recently. Bc the first practical, affordable lighter didn't come out until much later.
I would have used a "Zippo" type lighter rather than a "Bic disposable' in this example ... maybe more believable

Load More Replies...Very similar thing happened to D**k Shawn (comedian and actor.) (He played the burned-out lifeguard in "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World") On April 17, 1987, during a performance at University of California, San Diego's Mandeville Hall, Shawn suffered a heart attack and collapsed face-down on the stage. The audience initially assumed that it was part of his act; but after he had remained motionless on the stage for several minutes, a stage hand examined him and asked if a physician was present. After CPR had been initiated, the audience was asked to leave the auditorium. Most in attendance remained, still assuming that it was all part of Shawn's act and only began leaving after paramedics arrived. A notice in the following day's San Diego Union newspaper announced that Shawn had died during the performance at the age of 63.
In the meantime, try to rely on more than just one source for your news. Though it feels wonderful to have our worldview affirmed by an outlet, this can lead to a very warped perspective on global events. It’s usually a good idea to read a variety of sources.

Load More Replies...Not quite true. Were inspired by British soldiers eating smarties during the Spanish civil war (I think) and M&Ms first customers was the US army but weren't made specifically for them.
It doesn't claim it was made for the US military though?
Load More Replies...The sugar coating prevents them from melting in the hand and therefor doesn't make a mess. It wasn't designed for useage at the front, it was just an effect that was benefitial and so the US army bought them
The WW2 ration chocolate was made to deliberately not taste so good. It was meant to be 'emergency only' food, and the Army feared that soldiers would eat it first, and have no standby snack (it also had a higher melting point than regular chocolate). Some soldiers found it so awful that they called it 'Hitler's secret weapon', but perhaps so many became habituated to the taste that they came to prefer it, and maybe that's why modern American chocolate isn't like chocolate elsewhere.
M&Ms were created to replicate the British smarties made by rowntree. it was a small easy to carry ration supplement. Due to wartime in early Ww2 no court challenge occurred for intellectual property theft. US product was sent to the uk due to supply shortages also.
We had an endless supply of them but they were modified for the sandbox and had a soap aftertaste. I could not eat them for years after. Yuck.
Smarties were created in 1937 – before then Rowntree's sold Chocolate Beans. SMARTIES have undergone several changes over their 75 years to the colourful chocolate sweets that are known today, with the brand now selling over 50million tubes a year in the UK alone. _____________________________________________________ The design was patented on March 3, 1941. That year, M&M®, Ltd. began production in Newark, New Jersey, and the first M&Ms® went on sale. At first they were sold in cardboard tubes and marketed to the military as a snack that could travel well in different climates. Many soldiers in World War II ate these candies.
Galaxy minstrals were made first and they dont melt in the pack or the hand, they were advertised as the chocolate that melted in the mouth not the hand
We asked 100 Crowned Eagles if they view humans as prey. Survey says!?!?
Because there have been cases of the crowned eagle attacking small children to the point of gouging their chest and throat with their talons and apparently a case of a missing girl whose severed arm was found in a tall tree occupied by a crowned eagle's nest.

Another good idea is to check where the outlet got its news from. The odds are that if a claim sounds too outlandish or your gut tells you that something is off, it’s too good (or bad!) to be true. It’s often a bad idea to blindly trust any single source. Especially if the facts it shares appear iffy and wobbly. On the flip side, information that is sourced from experts, eyewitnesses, and officials is more reliable.
Ketchup vs BBQ sauce. 1st thing I think on Bored Panda is of this being some bizarre way to serve sauces at a restaurant lol

I was in a chess club when i was at school. I was terrible. I played this really pretty girl once, I beat her in 3 moves. I didn't want her to leave, so we reset the board really quickly. Then I beat her in two moves. I didn't want to be condescending, so I shook her hand and walked away. I was terrible at more than chess.
Load More Replies...I'm not a chess player so sorry to bother but it's it called "fool mates" because it's not an legal turn? I thought the king is only allowed one step (but in all directions).... Magnus Carlsen, the current world no 1 chess grandmaster did that last year in an actual tournament.
Load More Replies...That looks like it would take allot of chance to do that though. One would have to depend on the other player to move the right pawns.

The most reliable sources will have a very strong code of ethics, and high journalistic standards, and will employ fact-checkers and good editors. They’ll also avoid publishing unverified rumors and will always own up to any mistakes that they correct. Some of the most reliable and unbiased news sources include The New York Times, the BBC, Reuters, and the Associated Press.

There is a lot of talk about how great Rome and the Romans were. But if you study history, you'll actually see that Rome was almost a backwater when compared to others (Mughal, Chinese, Mayan). Just because our society has its roots in Greece and Rome, doesn't mean it's automatically the best.

It's a contest. If you are randomly selected from all the entries, you agree to legally change your name to Subway in exchange for $50,000 in Subway gift cards.
A Taqueria in SF's Mission District offered free tacos for life if anyone got the restaurant tattooed on their body. So many got tattoos that the restaurant went out of business.
