Another "feel-good-story" that is quite the opposite. He Is a kind of heroe, of course. But on the other side he should not have had to do this. The problem is the system that send people to debt for seeking education.

He didnt have to do this , he chose to do that and that’s the difference . Shame on the system for sure ! I believe loads of countries, defined rich or poor, would face the reality of students that cannot afford education. I’m not the one to believe in conspiracy theories, but I believe if education is hard/expensive/ only obtainable by a referral- it can cause: Poor health, Shorter life expectancy, Poverty, Unemployment, Lower salary, Gender inequality, Social isolation, Illegal activities. Awful Really

It's sad that somebody has to spent their life savings (even if done voluntarily) so other people don't go into debt for getting an education.

The real legend here is the two pairs of jeans. Unless he just never wore jeans. Good ones last but they don't last 70+ years if you wear them. Edit: - also - "/S" for anyone who doesn't get that I'm joking and of course what the guy did was very nice.

Legend, or a tragic indictment of an education system that denies talented students access to higher education because of lack of access to finances?

Both. Two things can be true at the same time. The system is messed up, and this man did what he could to help with that problem.

This is supposedly true. A man had a heart attack and recovered. He sued the doctor (the article didn't say why). At court, he had another heart attack. He was saved by the doctor he was sueing.

I work with doctors, I can't get 4 of them to agree on something, if there were 15, the patient would be dying while they are arguing.

Does anyone else find it kind of crazy that airlines don’t have a medical professional on board planes in case someone has an emergency? I imagine the hassle is worth people not dying on your planes.

They keep a very advanced kit on board and statistically speaking there is likely at minimum a nurse on any flight of significant distance. Had them page a medical professional on a flight a few years ago. They pulled a huge kit down from the ceiling, it had IVs and all. The nurse was able to treat the patient successfully.

Just read a book review in the paper (yes, I still read the paper) where it was claimed that when all the hot shot cardiac surgeons went to a convention, the mortality from heart attacks went down 15%. "Random Acts of Medicine" by Jena and Worsham.

My feeling is that whether there were cardiologists on board or not she would have survived...because there was no way they would have performed open heart surgery on a plane so she would have lived long enough for the plane to land & for her to get to a hospital. If a heart attack is going to be immediately fatal, you gonna die. 15 cardiologists present or not!

CNN reports that people’s attention spans have taken a huge hit over the past two decades. Back in 2004, the average attention that people could focus on a screen was around 2.5 minutes. These days, it’s barely 47 seconds.

As we’ve explained on Bored Panda recently, the way that people consume the news has been changing quite a bit in recent years and decades. For one, folks read and watch the news from a far broader selection of sources and platforms than before. However, the downside is that there’s so much information that it has to be presented in small bits.

Wrong timing between your comment and the picture. What you describe is mainly related to 19th century astronomy, a discipline that involve a LOT of numeric calculus. The picture here depicts the 1927 Solvay congress members. 1920/1930 physics involves algebric calculus, and very few numeric calculus.

In the Digital Age, news and other outlets have adapted to this shortening attention span by writing catchy (and sometimes clickbaity) headlines. They also use images and different formats on different platforms to present the news in a fun, engaging, but brief manner. When everyone’s fighting over your attention, it becomes crucial that you stand out from the crowd without compromising the quality of the information. That might involve using photos, videos, cool graphics, quirky quizzes, or even maps alongside the text.

For the screw driver in the picture I'd say it's more of a happy coincidence than a design feature. There is not really much of anything bracing the shank of the driver in the plastic handle so too much torque, as would be applied by a wrench, would likely break the handle.

Ugh, this does work. I did it working on my first car, a badly engineered '82 Chevette. Why are commenters today so sure something they know nothing about is fake? We're not speculating on an ancient culture, this is real life. And it's not a coincidence, they absolutely did this one purpose.

*Some* screwdrivers are designed so you can use another tool to increase torque. Besides the hexagonal handles, some have a shaft that's square and many have a hole in the handle. You can use pliers on any screwdriver, but I wouldn't call that a design to allow using another tool.

I'm pretty sure that's just a benefit of design.

Phosphenes. Cells inside your own eyes produce biophotons (light particles) as part of the normal process for how light is absorbed by the atoms in your eyes - it's complicated but basically atoms in your eyes create and emit particles of light, as well as absorbing them from outside. So the swirly colours you see are actually being generated by cells inside your own eyeball.

It’s not just the format of the news that’s important. You have to know what sources you can rely on the most because, in this day and age, very few people have the time and energy to double-check every single claim in an article.

According to the BBC, start off by checking who wrote the piece, and how reliable they are. Take a peek at the other articles they’ve worked on, and check for bias and (in)accuracy.

Very similar thing happened to D**k Shawn (comedian and actor.) (He played the burned-out lifeguard in "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World") On April 17, 1987, during a performance at University of California, San Diego's Mandeville Hall, Shawn suffered a heart attack and collapsed face-down on the stage. The audience initially assumed that it was part of his act; but after he had remained motionless on the stage for several minutes, a stage hand examined him and asked if a physician was present. After CPR had been initiated, the audience was asked to leave the auditorium. Most in attendance remained, still assuming that it was all part of Shawn's act and only began leaving after paramedics arrived. A notice in the following day's San Diego Union newspaper announced that Shawn had died during the performance at the age of 63.

In the meantime, try to rely on more than just one source for your news. Though it feels wonderful to have our worldview affirmed by an outlet, this can lead to a very warped perspective on global events. It’s usually a good idea to read a variety of sources.

The sugar coating prevents them from melting in the hand and therefor doesn't make a mess. It wasn't designed for useage at the front, it was just an effect that was benefitial and so the US army bought them

The WW2 ration chocolate was made to deliberately not taste so good. It was meant to be 'emergency only' food, and the Army feared that soldiers would eat it first, and have no standby snack (it also had a higher melting point than regular chocolate). Some soldiers found it so awful that they called it 'Hitler's secret weapon', but perhaps so many became habituated to the taste that they came to prefer it, and maybe that's why modern American chocolate isn't like chocolate elsewhere.

M&Ms were created to replicate the British smarties made by rowntree. it was a small easy to carry ration supplement. Due to wartime in early Ww2 no court challenge occurred for intellectual property theft. US product was sent to the uk due to supply shortages also.

Smarties were created in 1937 – before then Rowntree's sold Chocolate Beans. SMARTIES have undergone several changes over their 75 years to the colourful chocolate sweets that are known today, with the brand now selling over 50million tubes a year in the UK alone. _____________________________________________________ The design was patented on March 3, 1941. That year, M&M®, Ltd. began production in Newark, New Jersey, and the first M&Ms® went on sale. At first they were sold in cardboard tubes and marketed to the military as a snack that could travel well in different climates. Many soldiers in World War II ate these candies.

Because there have been cases of the crowned eagle attacking small children to the point of gouging their chest and throat with their talons and apparently a case of a missing girl whose severed arm was found in a tall tree occupied by a crowned eagle's nest.

Another good idea is to check where the outlet got its news from. The odds are that if a claim sounds too outlandish or your gut tells you that something is off, it’s too good (or bad!) to be true. It’s often a bad idea to blindly trust any single source. Especially if the facts it shares appear iffy and wobbly. On the flip side, information that is sourced from experts, eyewitnesses, and officials is more reliable.

Books would not have you think that. In (biology/science) books, red is used to show arteries that carry oxygenated blood away from the heart, and blue for veins that carry de-oxygenated blood back to the heart.

I was in a chess club when i was at school. I was terrible. I played this really pretty girl once, I beat her in 3 moves. I didn't want her to leave, so we reset the board really quickly. Then I beat her in two moves. I didn't want to be condescending, so I shook her hand and walked away. I was terrible at more than chess.

I'm not a chess player so sorry to bother but it's it called "fool mates" because it's not an legal turn? I thought the king is only allowed one step (but in all directions).... How did he got so far on this picture in just two turns? (And yes I see he would be thrown by the queen - if I interpret the symbols correct)

This is often claimed, but I've also read Augustus/Octavian Caesar was the richest, by quite a bit more - he "owned" something like 25% of the Roman empire... I'd be happy with a small fraction of either's wealth, though. I'm a simple man.

There is a lot of talk about how great Rome and the Romans were. But if you study history, you'll actually see that Rome was almost a backwater when compared to others (Mughal, Chinese, Mayan). Just because our society has its roots in Greece and Rome, doesn't mean it's automatically the best.

Everyone tends to have at least some biases. So it helps if we’re aware of our own political, cultural, and ideological leanings. If you encounter a source that confirms all of your opinions without offering a broader, more nuanced perspective, you should probably read a few more sources. Life is rarely black and white; there are lots of shades of gray to consider.

If he were that bitter and hung up on it he could have spent the $40k on a lot better options. Humanitarian Approach: spend $40k on soupkitchen and Name it after her (like Lynyrd Skynyrd) get the local news to do a piece on it/advertise OG: find her local pub/restaurant and hire it out, fill it full of people and pick up the tab. Comical: get a billboard, adverts, and merchandise to advertise her sh*tty behaviour

It's a contest. If you are randomly selected from all the entries, you agree to legally change your name to Subway in exchange for $50,000 in Subway gift cards.

A Taqueria in SF's Mission District offered free tacos for life if anyone got the restaurant tattooed on their body. So many got tattoos that the restaurant went out of business.

They sold the restaurant to a pupusa shop but had it written in the lease that anyone showing the tattoo still eats for free.

Is it worth it to find out what Subway might consider, “LIFE”, compared to what you might consider ,”LIFE “? (And, could you still use coupons ???) And those gift cards would probably expire on 1/1/2024!

Subway gift cards never expire, and you can still use coupons. Gift cards are simply the method of payment.

So what you're saying is that while it isn't the greatest, it's still pretty good despite the fact that people like to hate on it.

First or last? Just because I know a Charlotte and I'd like to confuse North Carolina internet users by insisting to them that there is a Charlotte Subway.

And 1.5 billion of that will be spent on online. The people who prefer offline single player (like myself) will have to suffer with minimal content.

GTA 5 Online has made roughly $7B since 2013. I think they can afford it.

To put this in perspective for younger pandas - I can still remember the marketing for King's Quest 5 ( 1990 ) bragging about it costing a million dollars to produce. === "King's Quest V was the first adventure game to be released on CD-ROM in MPC (Multimedia PC) format, the first to have digitized voiceovers, the first to use digitized hand painted backgrounds, and the first title to cost over one million U.S. dollar to produce."

And could fail because Rockstar said that they are going to orientate the game more towards "modern standards" - probably the first time GTA tries to copy Saints Row...

Thus proving there is no limit to conspicuous consumption. $2,000,000,000 on a GAME? That's a lot of zeros for a plaything.
