“Daily Educational Maps”: 40 Interesting And Informative Maps That Might Change The Way You Look At The World Forever
InterviewDo you remember the days of using physical maps on road trips? Dad's in the driver's seat yelling as mom's in the passenger seat frantically searching the map for the exit we need to take and- oh! We missed it already! Having apps like Google maps in the palm of our hands has made our lives so much easier (and road trips so much more pleasant). Within seconds, we can check how many miles there are between Texas and Lithuania and Taiwan. Although, I wouldn't recommend making that journey a road trip.
Thanks to one popular Instagram account, maps on our phones can now teach us much more than just distance and directions. Map Central is an Instagram page with over 130k followers that “provides a full perspective of our world” through sharing daily educational maps. These graphics are no simple maps; they share facts about countries’ demographics, information about climate change, examine population shifts and trends, compare countries by size and population and much more. We’ve gathered some of our favorite maps from the page for you to enjoy below, as well as an interview with the creator of Map Central.
Then if you’re looking to learn even more after finishing this list, we’ve got the perfect Bored Panda piece for you to check out next right here.

The nexus between geology and geography influenced a huge part in human history. I wish it was still commonly taught in school.
Geography both natural and man influenced has impacted many settlement patterns. Examples: steel and textile mill based towns/citys , the affluent he's are located upwind and at a higher elevation than the worker masses. In the Midwest likewise with the wrong side of the tracks. Prevailing winds blew all the nasty RR smoke and soot to one side or the other.
Load More Replies...Okay, so it created fertile soil, so people made farms there, worked by slaves, whose freed descends then later would vote progressive because they don't want to go back to "the good ol days"? That about the long and short of it?
always gotta have something to blame it on XD...but yeah, geography geek here and that's pretty insane
We reached out to the creator of Map Central on Instagram, and they gave us a bit of background on the page. "I created my account in 2017 because I wanted to make a collection of maps I saw across the Internet and enjoyed. Eventually other people saw my page and enjoyed the content, and I grew an audience." We also asked them about some of their favorite parts of the page. "My favorite post type are carousels I do on geopolitical stories, like how the Gambia became a country and how World War II hasn't technically ended. It's incredible to learn and teach others about unknown stories in history regarding geopolitics. I want to create more long-form content in which I explain the context behind a map or story."
Next, they explained why maps are so great for making information accessible. "Maps are a visual representation of data that can be difficult to understand. With a map, anyone can understand important data about the world. Maps are both great to look at and easy to understand, and that's why they are so popular." Lastly, they added, "If you are looking to map makes of your own, Canva and MapChart are great resources to start." While I personally will leave the map-making to the professionals, I'm very thankful that they run this account and that I'm now able to learn so much about the world from easily digestible graphics.
you have quite enough sun on other days methinks ;)
Load More Replies...What do you mean? Even the edges of the area where its dawn/ dusk, there's still sunlight.
Load More Replies...Learning facts and statistics can be pretty dry, but having visual aids in the form of bright maps is a great way to help retain information. Studies show that visual explanations yield greater benefits than relying solely on verbal explanations. Words are processed by our short term memory, which can only retain about seven bits of information, but images are directly processed by our long-term memory, according to eLearning Industry. In fact, about 65% of the population classifies themselves as “visual learners”. While all learning styles are beneficial to varying degrees, the general consensus is that images trump books, audio lessons and more.
Along with being easier to recall, visual information is also simpler to process. Images are processed in our brains 60,000 times faster than text, and 90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual. According to MIT News, our brains can even identify images after seeing them for as little as 13 milliseconds. It’s no wonder we love seeing these brightly colored, fascinating maps. Our brains are immediately stimulated and able to comprehend data much faster than if we read it in a book.
And they walked barefoot in the snow in the sweltering heat for 5 miles up the hill coming and going.
Load More Replies...this is the map of the longest continuous walk of Jesus
Load More Replies...Perhaps the most direct longest continuous walk, but it would be even longer if you zig-zagged all over Africa and Asia and detoured into Europe.
Given the number of war zones it crosses, probably not
Load More Replies...Not just any visual will do the trick, however. While captivating images such as the maps from Map Central are likely to catch our eyes, “boring” graphics will lead to a lack of motivation in learning the information presented. eLearning Industry’s website is careful to note that “the quality and relevance of visuals matters a lot”. Graphics to aid learning should simplify complex topics, be easy to digest visually and help readers “connect familiar materials with the unfamiliar”. The goal is to learn something new, so if an image is not serving that purpose, the material might as well be presented through another medium.

Jeez. America needs to step its game up in nearly every aspect of modern culture. we're essentially moving backward what with the abortion debate.
Load More Replies...What are we considering as lead? Because despite the fact Australia has a queen it has an extremely toxic environment for women in politics where they are constantly verbally abused and undermined.
However you judge 'leader', Australia can claim female leadership. Australia has had a female head of state for decades (the Queen), and a female representative of the Queen (Governor General Quintin Brice), and a female prime minister (Julia Gillard). Although I do agree that women in Australian politics are often treated fairly poorly.

Yeah I live where "Maine" is. Friends ring me about floods in Italy.
Could be the difference between different types of map projections, that may give you this illusion. No 2D map is correct (because it is a globe), depending on the projection it just preserves some parameters. "equal-area map projections such as the Sinusoidal projection and the Gall–Peters projection show the correct sizes of countries relative to each other, but distort angles."

One of the best parts of the Map Central page is how it allows people to better understand their place in this massive world. As humans, we tend to have a hard time conceptualizing what we cannot see. I mean, seeing is believing. So Map Central is a great way to bridge the gap between knowing you’re from a massive country or state to actually seeing on a map how many other countries could fit inside of yours. We can get so caught up in our own little worlds that we forget how vast the planet actually is. Did you know that the Mediterranean Sea could fit perfectly inside of Australia? I didn’t either, but knowing this now makes me feel like I have a better understanding of geography!
No road between Denmark and Norway. You have to drive through Sweden. And No road to or from Ireland and the islands in the North Sea. And no rad to Sardinia and Korsika, "just beside" Rome
Load More Replies...Ah yes, that famous road across the English Channel, It's called the 'Ah shite, I'm drowning road'!
Actually, there is a tunnel underneath the Channel. For trucks and trains I believe.
Load More Replies...This is because at one point the Roman empire controlled most of this area. Yes including across the English Channel, but nit so much Russian.
Yes they do. They built a good percentage of them to do exactly that originally.
This one is easily identifiable if you’re into geography and/or cartography. A quick glance will narrow it down to: greenish grid = La Plata, BA; or a sienna hue with a big square in the middle = Central Madrid. Sorry. I’m a map geek.
Any cool stories about why it was designed this way? I assume the symmetry was planned and not coincidental.
Load More Replies...I keep saying that if Mickey Mouse had designed our street system, we’d all be better off!
Where I am in the UK is about 30 mins from the coast and predictions have estimated that one day my village will be able to add 'by the sea' to its name.
The melting of all Earth's ice sheets, especially Antarctica and Greenland, would raise the average sea level by about 70 meters
Yeah, I was definitely wondering where all that water would come from. The 10m sea rise maps are a lot more scary to me because they show how much trouble we are really in.
Load More Replies...Climate change and rising seas are a big problem but even if all the ice and snow on the entire planet melted, there isnt enough water for the seas to rise a thousand metres. This map is science fiction, so keep that in mind. Its still gonna be really bad over the next few hundred years. There will be climate refugees because their land is underwater and there will be climate refugees because it will be too hot to sustain life in some areas.
I was just wondering why most of Europe disappeared with its mountains way higher than that.
Load More Replies...I dont think the sea level was EVER "1000 meters" higher in the past. Not even when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and there were no polar ice caps
Aside from the geography facts we can harness from Map Central, we can learn plenty of information through the demographics of other nations, or our own, as well. Gaining a better understanding of other cultures helps us feel connected to the world, minimize the spread of stereotypes, have more sympathy for global issues and enhance communication between nations. Do you ever go on business trips to other parts of the world? It’s great to have some knowledge about the culture you’re stepping into. Understanding a country's history provides some insight into why the people are the way they are. How common is alcohol consumption there? Has the nation ever had a female leader? These tiny tidbits of information are fun to learn and can be very beneficial when traveling.
Never go full communist. Social democracy, that's what you want to aim for
Load More Replies...I'm assuming this is based on land area. B/c the one percent woud want all that Texas oil. Believe me, they'd be allllll on that. The majority would get the wide-open Badlands, salt flats, Sonoran Desert, and, oh, yeah, probably the swamps....

Tax billionaires out of existence, and while we're at it, transfer the excessive assets that they have into the hands of the workers
Tax wealth not income. Use the additional tax income to increase government programs. Free Healthcare, free college, better public transportation, better incentives for renewable energy...etc. I think that would work better.

It makes no sense to have that kind of money just to spend it on missions to Mars (I mean, come on now, for what?), when there's so many people who could benefit from a tiny fraction of that number right here on this planet. So many things can be done to help every single person here.
Musk is over $60 billion richer now than he was when this map was made.
Comparing the wealth of a person, accumulated over a lifetime, compared to what a country makes in a year. Didn't pay attention during maths, did we?
Curiosity also has a bit of an inertia effect. Once we start learning, we want to continue finding out more and more. Following Map Central and finding out a tiny bit about the Earth every day can inspire followers to do more research. Maybe you’ll catch a travel bug from following the page. If this page inspires you to embark on a journey in your own life, you’re likely to experience some life-changing adventures. Cabinzero shared an article titled “15 Benefits Of Traveling And Why Travel Is Good For You”, and reading the title alone makes me want to pack my suitcase.
They’re not saying the animals in the regions came from there originally

Load More Replies...I am Belgian: The Belgian federal state is a democracy with a lot of states/region that have overlapping authority and all these states and regions can block decisions in the parliaments with alarm bell procedures, community commissions and shared community commissions. It results in no decisions and a non transparent democracy. There have been remarks by OECD, European court of justice, UN that the Belgian state has several serious flaws.
Load More Replies...The free market decided that. America unlike Europe has abundance of resources to manufacture cars cheaply and abundance of gas. Cars are more convenient.

One reason Cabinzero notes for promoting travel is the improvement it can have on our communication and language skills. Learning Japanese is definitely more challenging when living in Missouri than it would be in Tokyo when the pressure to communicate is on and you’re surrounded by the language constantly. Learning other languages is a great exercise for our brains as well, and it gives us a new perspective to better understand our own language and culture.
Huh, guess everyone loves him. He sounds like a great guy! It's not like he could have those results any other way. /s
Me thinks this is more land creation than land reclamation.
It is. Many ecosystems were lost forever and native wildlife became endangered to the point where to this day we have to work really hard to rebuild it. Unfortunately some species were lost (as far as we know so far at least 13) permanently.
Load More Replies...Yeah go Holland go! God created the world but the Dutch created their own country.
And destroyed countless ecosystems and personally caused native wildlife to become endangered because we just had to fill up the sea. Yay us.
Load More Replies...It’s worth mentioning that creating this land destroyed countless ecosystems and endangered or eradicated native animal and plant systems. The damage that this caused still makes our ecosystem very vulnerable today which is why we have a lot of problems with invasive exotic animals wiping out the native animal/plant population we spent decades rebuilding.

Another great benefit of traveling is the boost in creativity and confidence we can experience. As comfortable as it is to stay at home, we need to be exposed to new stimuli to expand our creativity. Traveling also inevitably places us in situations we have never experienced before, sometimes requiring spontaneous decision making. Dealing with last minute train cancellations and figuring out how to communicate with locals who speak another language are just a couple examples of the infinite challenges one can expect when visiting a new place. But once these tasks have been completed successfully, travelers feel so much more confident in their abilities. Being in another country presents difficulties we don’t encounter at home, but it simultaneously allows for growth we could never experience in the comfort of our own cities.
This is a good example of why our Senate is not representational. With only two Senators per state, the underpopulated areas get far more of a say than the highly populated areas.
It was set up this way on purpose. The House of Representatives is allocated according to population, but the Senate is an equal allocation so that small states aren't held hostage to the will of the larger ones. Whether this is a good system for the modern USA is up for debate, but this is the system the founders set up.

Another benefit many experience after traveling abroad is an increase in tolerance and understanding of other cultures. Cabinzero’s CEO, Neil Varden, gave the example of his travels to India that opened up his mind and made him realize how fortunate he is. He noted one situation where he was hungry during a bus ride and a woman offered him some cookies, although she might not have had enough food for herself and her children that day. There is a notion in India that “Guest is God”, Varden explained, which led to many people showing him great generosity and hospitality.
Chile is near the top of my bucket list. It may have just moved up a notch or two. (Sorry Norway and Netherlands!)
Actually, there used to be a Northern Hemisphere penguin called the Auk. There are records of them. But they are now extinct.

Next time you plan a trip, maybe you’ll choose your destination based on the information you learn on Map Central. If you’re looking for a mountainous country to visit, the best place to check out would be Bhutan, with 98.8% of the nation including mountains. Although if your destination doesn’t need to be the most mountainous nation, Tajikistan, Montenegro, Armenia, Switzerland and Nepal aren’t too far behind with plenty of gorgeous mountains to see. Maybe you’re a vegetarian looking for an easy time enjoying local cuisine. Have no fear visiting India then, Map Central reports that India has the most vegetarians in the world, with 38% of their total population avoiding meat. India may not have been at the top of my bucket list before, but now I’m dying to sample all of the veggie options the nation has to offer!
because they have socialised health... the horror. next they'll say communism must be brought to usa. /s/
Also because they do not stuff everything with sugar and workers can afford decent food.

Hey, let's take a vote to show Russia who condemns their actions! That'll make them stop.
Wondering myself. Most of google was pointing to Robert's Rules of Order that there is no difference. But I think they're using it more the sense of "One abstains from voting when one has the opportunity to vote but chooses not to." ie Choose not to vote, vs not being there to vote.
Load More Replies...The US has donated more money to Ukrain, than Russia's yearly military budget.
So they asked Russians to condemn Russia, and they refused. How shocking!
for those who are still confused, india and china and south africa kept quiet because we're part of BRICS so there's lots of financial entanglement. I am surprised about Brazil, but maybe tehy were pressured by the americans. As for the rest of africa, the yellow patches were generally liberated by the support of soviets helping the freedom movements so... they feel obliged to be nice to moscow. This does NOT entail that we endorse it, just that we have our balls in their hands.
Frankly speaking we can't afford to have Putin as an enemy, because we know the rich countries aren't going to help us should he turn his ire on us.

Load More Replies...All of those man-made islands are made using sand to make the concrete. The process has devastated beaches and coastlines all over the world, just so that rich people can live in a skyscraper apartment in an artificial palm tree. Disgusting.

it looks like a virus thats slowly spreading. kinda like what humans are.
I'm not surprised by West Virginia. I'm really not. As far as I can tell, the only thing illegal there is a living wage. Grrrrr.
As an Australian I can say that I wouldn't want a kangaroo and don't know why others would.
No-one's going to question why Alaska (and others) saw it necessary to prohibit owning kangaroos?
... or that Maine (for instance) must have a form you need to fill out in order to purchase a kangaroo?
Load More Replies...Sorry but no one should own a kangaroo as they belong in the bush of Australia. They are not pets.
This saddens me. Kangaroos live in highly evolved communities. They do not fare well on their own.
So not even in 19,000 B.C.E. was my neck of the woods covered with snow. Why am I not surprised?
They‘ve been to every continent including Antarctica for an unspecified amount of time in „A totally fun thing Bart will never do again“
The most unrealistic part: A middle class American family that travels regularly.
The plane that crashed in Pennsylvania was highjacked, then re-highjacked by the passengers who casted a vote upon the decision to try to gain back control. Sadly, in the process, all of the passengers passed, but they saved so may people lives.
Those folks were amazing. They knew full well what was going on with the other planes and took matters into their own hands to prevent more murders.

That was when you could take things like box cutters onto the plane. You could walk right up to the gate and meet people exiting ethe plane. It was a different time.

I think it's more to do with what the government allows Google to do. If they don't want Streetview for whatever reason, it won't get done.
Load More Replies...Sadly crossing through China is also a huge risk as you can be caught and sent back to North Korea but if you make it, it's so worth it. One time a group of defectors tried to swim their way to South Korea and it actually worked. The lengths people go through to escape really shows the terrible living conditions of North Korea
wow, the fact that they have to travel to Mongolia and thailand, multiple countries over to get into a country that is next-door. this goes to show how terrible it is in NK
I had a friend who's parents had her smuggled out of NK in a sack of rice as a baby. She eventually was brought to the US and adopted. She has no clue if her birth family is alive or dead she just has the letter her mom sent with her in the sack of rice. We lost touch but I think of her a lot. She's part of the reason I became a foster mom and then ended up adopting my first foster.
A bit more perspective: China is sending N. Korean defectors back where they will be tortured and killed.
Anyone else mildly irritated by the term "defector" here? I'm not a native english speaker, though. But wouldn't "refugee" be more appropriate?
A defector is fleeing from a country. A refugee is fleeing to a country.

Well, much of the Netherlands is ALREADY below sea level, so... (See map of Netherlands hundreds of years ago.)
Not exactly a surprise - 2050 is when it is currently predicted the planet will hit the maximum population sustainable. Yet look at what we are doing to it now. 😢
It's not about sustainable population, it's that in some places it's become so expensive to have children that population growth will soon slow and go negative. Already happening in Japan, and China's regretting/reversing their one child policy and are having to import women for all those men to marry. Major government programs starting up all over the world to try to convince people to have children because the trend in developed nations is to have a smaller family. Our economies can't handle such a proportion of elderly to younger people.
Load More Replies...This is why abortion needs to be legal and people need better access to birth control and healthcare. Maybe we need to have a limit on how many spawn a person can have. At least till we get the overcrowding under control. And you need to pass a psych evaluation and intelligence test before being allowed to procreate.
Huh? Rather the opposite. Who in JYP's Fish Tank would speed up the decrease of population when it's already causing problems?
Load More Replies...The US increase must be based on immigration because women are either postponing having children indefinitely or saying no directly.
This is very dubious. If we judge only by people born in each country, then the whole world apart from Africa and parts of South Asia already has a fertility rate (babies per woman) below sustainability levels leading to decreasing populations 20 years from now. The increase in North and South America, Australia, and the rest of Europe and central Asia, if any, would have to be due to immigration.
It actually should based on the HDI (human development index).
Load More Replies...In case you are wondering: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Development_Index
HDI doesn't use the terminology first, second and third world. Those terms refer to the political alignment after WWII First world = allies Second World = USSR Third world = unaligned
I really dislike the first, second and third world designations. They reek of elitist colonial stereotypes.
The whole concept of third world or first world countries is b******t because it's purpose was to define who sided with communism, capitalism, or abstained from the Cold War, and nothing about quality of life. It's somewhat accurate, with the exception of the United States (and honestly Serbia doesn't have that bad a reputation.)
It's 2022, we shouldn't be referring to countries as 'third world' considering the term was coined thanks to the colonial and racist mentality of imperialist nations. We can refer to them as either developed or developing countries.
I thought 'third world' was a term we werent supposed to use any more. 'Developing country', I think is the 'proper' term. I wonder what makes a country '2nd world'....
This isn't what it means. First World is aligned to the 'West' whilst Second World is aligned to the 'East' ie Russia, China and Third World simply means unaligned - the countries the the first two fight over and have their proxy wars in..
that was the old meaning, it now has come to mean poverty index.

ISIS sucks at naming, i know most of these are historical but seriously, what kind of name is QOQZAZ? or OROBPA? did they just bang their headon a keyboard? also i find it hilarious how one is named Sham because that's exactly what this whole thing was: a sham, pretending they were doing it for God when they were really doing it for probably the top hat wearing Dorito Demon
Some are old Empire names like Maghreb. Makes me laugh because I play Crusader Kings III which is fairly historically accurate and a lot of these names I'm familiar with. Who says games can't teach you anything.

My maternal grandparents & mother are US & Dutch/EU. As am I. I don’t have US consular representation in the EU as an American, because I have freedom of movement as Dutch. In the US, I have all freedoms of an American with representation and Dutch consular representation. I had to register for Selective Service in the US, but I wouldn’t be drafted if it came to that. I can only enter/exit US or EU on one passport. I’ve made that mistake. I left US on US passport via British Air to Schipol w/layover in London. Entering Netherlands I used Dutch passport. Exited with my US passport in Netherlands with no issue. Upon landing in San Francisco, automatic held me for half a day to verify my multiple citizenship because I had no entry stamp into EU/Netherlands.
I'd say most of Europe is a bit more complicated than one or the other. For example, In the UK, if you were born while your parents were on a visit, you would not be given citizenship. However if at least one of your parents were here on a working visa, you would most likely be given a British birth certificate, giving you entitlement to a UK passport (but not your parents). The EU made thing a little more complicated with the whole open borders thing meaning some people would qualify just by being born there, whereas others would not.

Colonizers are long dead. The current population have every legitimacy to the land.

It's a dessert because the bees felt unwelcome. 😋 (sarcasm incase you don't know)
Load More Replies...Because of the Sahara desert, there's nothing there for the bees.
Load More Replies...I've heard it said that there is not one species on the whole of the Earth whose pollination relies solely on honeybees.
Bees all over the worlds oceans, but they avoid the Sahara... allrighty then
NOT TRUE!!! At least not the NATURAL RANGE! Honey bees are STRICTLY Old-World creatures. They are generally beneficial in the New World, so yes, support your honey producers, but some care should take place that we don't simply replace New-World bumble bees with Old-World honey bees! The map above, I believe, includes the introduced range of Apis mellifera.

I think it is about the most common word on the country's Wikipedia page (which is about history and culture in most cases)

Just off the top of my head, I can think of Biblical names for India, Ethiopia, Iraq, Iran, Egypt, and Jordan — Hodu, Kush, Bavel, Paras, Mitzrayim, and Yarden.
In the Book of Esther. Esther was forced to marry King Ahasuerus (Xerxes I) of Persia (Iran today). The Book says he ruled from Hodu to Kush, which some interpret as India to Ethiopia.

The UK is 70 million. The US has some of the largest diasporas representing more nations than anywhere else. The differences between American communities is more vast than the differences between Slovakians and Scots.
And each one of those countries, and many more, are represented in the general population.
When I was a kid, after Nixon was elected, my parents had a bumper sticker in the shape of Massachusetts that read "Don't blame us!"
Which is ridiculous considering they have a larger population than many other states.

oh look at that - the rich countries. Strange. Almost like there's a correlation between indifference to the poor and having money.
Really??? China's a poor country now is it? Sweden is poor? India? Indonesia? Russia? All in the top 20 richest countries. The next 20 on the rich list consist mostly of the Arab states and countries that support Palestine. It's not about money, it's about politics, religion, and legitimacy.

Both starting and end points are north of the equator, while the tips of both South America and Africa are -way- south ouf the equator. So this line -has- to be curved.
Earth is a sphere you know. Mentally roll that map "north" until you look at the "lowest" point of the blue line. Then the blue line is a straight one from left to right.

I understand why MI & OH hate each other and it involves football, primarily the yearly playoff of the Buckeyes versus the wolverines. Imagine grown children fighting over a rivalry of who’s better….other more important things to ponder than that c**p!
Connecticut doesn't hate New Jersey, Nutmeggers are way more competitive with Massholes. And Mass is more competitive with CT and NH. In fact, nothing on this chart even makes sense.
According to my own experience, which I don't claim to be authoritative over whatever source this map has, West Virginia vs Pennsylvania and Florida vs Alabama is a big thing. Texas and Connecticut (and probably most other states) hate New York. Virginia (or at least Northern Virginia) hates Florida, with the rest of the internet. (Florida Man is a thing because journalists are legally allowed to listen to police radio, and therefore can find out about all the bizarre encounters.) South Carolina's hatred of Ohio is strictly due to sports, and they probably hate Alabama more; their real hatred is New York, along with most of the deep South.
Trust me, Texas does NOT hate New York because New York really hasn't done anything offensive toward Texas. California is a completely different story. Also, Texans appreciate people from states where the general modus operandi is to be kind and a TON of people from New York, including/possibly especially NYC, are very, very kind, whereas Californians tend to be cold, rude people. Load More Replies...I seriously doubt Nigeria has shortest people... those guys are huge.
Here's the paradox: the smaller you make the units of measurement, the longer the coastline is. In fact, the length of the coastline grows proportionally at a faster rate than the unit of measurement shrinks, with no obvious limit to this growth, suggesting that only the quanta-ization of the universe limits the length of a coastline to a finite distance.
It's just a piece-wise linear approximation. It's not a paradox that you get a more accurate result, the more precise you measure. A coast is a natural thing, so the most precise measurement would be on (sub)atomic level. What's unexpected or unusual about that?
