"you wanna go outside" could console a child also- kids love to play outside. "Sh it's ok" could apply to a fight- make an amicable gesture, say "shh it's ok" then sucker punch. Sounds plausible but maybe just in my head lol

When busses go where and when people need to, without an hour wait for the next bus, without having to go into the city center then back out so as to reach a neighboring area, when they run late enough, they might be a viable option.

Who's so confused that they downvoted Kim? When I travel between the Hudson Valley and Long Island I usually take the train because it fits my somewhat flexible schedule. A bus and a train could do the same thing. For most of my local travel. OTOH buses don't work well when they work at all. Buying frozen foods when I shop? There's waiting before and after shopping or I risk waiting for the next bus while stuff thaws, and then it's 1/4 mile walk home from the stop. Most of the places I want to go a bus won't get me closer than 2 to 5 miles or more. On some buses I can take a bike, but there's no bus that will let me bring my kayak.

I don't have a car (don't really need one), sometimes catch a bus (one every ten minutes), but mostly, if the time-distance is within an hour, I walk. Trains are prolific in the UK. The network is massive. Sadly, the UK trains are incredibly expensive due to our Govt selling them off to private concerns (not the tracks, though, WE still have to pay for their maintenance!), and the bus services, which aren't cheap. Thatcher sold off around 90%+ of our public services, the absolute ghoul. Europe's public transport network is also massive, but theirs is publicly owned. I often think about moving over there, tbh.)

It is sad that most people in the comments seem to never have experienced a good running public transport. Our city has bus routes on dedicated tracks and some of the routes depart every 2 to 3 minutes at rush hours. If less cars would clutter the cities the busses would have an easier time to pass through traffic. But sadly many cities especially on the american continent sacrificed their infrastructure to car dependency. If no one uses public transport the situation remains dire, and because the situation is so bad no one uses public transport.

I live a less than 10 minute drive from my work place. If I caught a bus it will take me more than 90 minutes. And doesn’t go past my kids school so I can drop them off on the way. I would LOVE to save the environment with a bus but unfortunately my local government can’t draw straight lines.

Walk? Or cycle? There are other options for such a short distance. Understand that the infrastructure might not be there for you to do so safely. In walk my son to school and then cycle to work. It takes 20 mins in the car, 30 min cycling

A lot of valid complaints about public transportation. In Anaheim Ca. the busses are expensive and only run frequently on a few routes during specific times. But cars aren't very practical either due to the obscene traffic (I could actually walk faster than the 91 freeway moves most of the day), not to mention all the pollution. The larger the population gets (9.7 billion worldwide by 2050) the more impractical everyone owning a car becomes. My point is that we're going to have to demand public transportation solutions eventually (it's in the math) so we should probably start now.

I would say busses here holds up to 50 - 60 persons, for bosses on longer trips. In cities I'm guessing it's less. But train cars here hold up to 76 on the largest of the long distance version for SJ.

Don't stop doing whatever you're doing. It is working. When your weight plateaus (as it 100% will), don't give up and ditch the diet. Go even harder. As you lose weight, your body does not need as many calories to maintain itself. Eventually, your calorie deficient diet becomes ideal for your slimmer body to keep itself as it is. That is why your weight will plateau. To continue losing weight, you need to restrict the calories even MORE. Until you reach your target weight. Then you can keep your calorie intake as it is, as long as your weight is stable. Note: Keeping the weight *off* is the biggest challenge. Everyone can lose weight, but hardly anybody can maintain that weight for long. Whatever works for your weight loss - keep it going over time.

The US really need to dump that fixation on two parties. In a solid democracy there are 20 parties to choose from, every vote is counting directly for the result without filters, no winner-takes-it-all and a % bar that prevents a tunnel view. This results in a coalition of 2 to 3 parties in power of governing a coumtry and 3 to 4 i opposition = the sound of reason is always present.

4 years Jimmy Carter (Blue) 8 years Reagan (Red) 4 years Bush Sr. (Red) 8 years Clinton (Blue) 8 years Bush Jr. (Red) 8 years Obama (Blue) 4 years Trump ( Red) 4 years Biden (Blue) 4 years Trump #2 (Red).....Please explain to me how Red ALWAYS wins since 20 years starting with Carter was Blue and 28 was Red. The ONLY reason it's 28 years Red, is Bush Sr. was elected for 4 years after Reagan, because he ran against Michael Dukakis. No one wanted him in office, especially when Operation Desert Storm kicked off and Dukakis had ZERO experience. That was NOT the time to be learning on the job experience. So, yes it's really close to being equal, so the Red hasn't stolen s**t.

Republican ideas for governing are antiquated, unpopular and regressive so they have to do heaps of shady shìt to attain and keep power. Despite this being obvious as fück, me posting this will somehow be controversial. It boggles the mind.

Except states dont have level distribution by income, religion, or employment type. Local communities should not be absorbed by a larger dissimilar or adjacent population just to perpetuate one party rule. Which is what most states have had for nearly a century.

There’s also a logarithmic formula that’s been around a while now: human age equivalent = {16 * ln(dog’s age) + 31}. → Also, apart from size, a very important consideration is that development is much faster in the first two years; age 2 = about 25 in human years. https://www.brookfarmveterinarycenter.com/post/human-years-vs-dog-years-calculate-your-pets-age-today

In the present it seems like there are more silver or gray cars than any other color. Any other old-heads remember the purple Gremlins?

On a holiday in Iceland, we rented a car. It was white. I found out: rental cars are, apparently, always white because white is the cheapest car paint and therefore easiest to replace. (In a small-population country like Iceland, I had the feeling there are more white cars than any other colour.)

Well, in Japan black cars are the default for most brands. If you want another color, you have to pay for it. White is expensive. Red is very expensive. 2 tons, like red and black, veeery expensive.

I love these pop-psychology claims, because they either treat everything and inherent, treat everything as learned, AND they always ignore the effects of culture. They're basic assumption is that the way that the people around them behave is universal human behavior. They're also abysmally ignorant of any other culture but their own.

This isn't entirely accurate. Gun access varies significantly in the US by state. In MA it is much harder to get a gun than in neighboring NH. In MA our fatalities and gun violence are the lowest in the nation, likely because it is so restrictive.

curious about the rodents one, it seams like a lot of effort for not a lot of meat so they would have to kill more of them so they would be higher on the list. (im not saying kill more im saying not a lot of meat) also what are other camelids they would eat?

That also means that approximately that many are being raised annually. If people just stopped eating meat, the farmers would likely "dispose" of all of those animals and transition to doing something else to raise income/food.

6% of Americans are insane, or have absolutely no idea what a bear is. There is nothing wrong with wanting to appear tough, or being willing to try defending yourself even against superior force, but thinking you could beat a grizzly is a level of delusion I don't understand. So, for context, the average weight (varying by gender and age) of a grizzly is 450/850lb or 207/389kg. The average human weighs (etc etc) 60-120kg. They are around 6.5ft-10ft in length (on all fours) compared to a human 5-7ft. Totally discounting the ability of grizzlies to outrun, outclimb and outswim most humans, AND totally discounting their paws with claws the length of human fingers, grizzlies are notorious for shrugging off bullet wounds. Early American settlers blasted them with long rifles and got torn apart for their trouble. But sure, your punches will work.

What most annoys me here is how the perspective on the timeline view makes it nearly impossible to compare the “balls” except when the variance is huge. I mean, in the timeline, the Black Death looks only a little larger than the smallpox outbreak, when in reality, it’s nearly four times the size.

Lake Baikal, in the lower-right is the most voluminous. IIRC, it's equal in volume to all but two of those combined. I'm going to guess that the inclusion critera is volume, actually, because some of those lakes are downright tiny by surface area. In which case, I am kinda surprised Erie and Winnipeg still make the list, since they're shallow. (UPDATE: Caspian Sea is more voluminous than Lake Baikal, but it's excluded from what I had seen because it's not freshwater.) (Also kinda neat: Lake Toba should be on this list at #24; it's a lake on an island.)

I would agree on blue - Not for the racism, but it would get way easier for a government to label opinions they don't like racist and suppress an opposition that way. The discussion about immigration from the Middle East here in Germany is a good example, if the " true democrats" (self claimed term from politicians) run out of arguments they throw racism claims all around.

domestication is more complex then people taking them out of nature and using them for labor but them still being wild. domestication actually changes not only behavior but parts of the body, ears, eyes, ect. its a really fascinating subject. another part of it is how many generations it would take for it to become wild again. cats are not considered fully domesticated. they are in a quasi group .

Really disbelieve this for Switzerland. Apart from English, you also have to learn a different national language in school. The German speaking part is by far the biggest part and we learn French. The Italian part can choose if they want to learn German or French, I think? So, all the Spanish learners would either have to attended a special school or learn Spanish in their spare time.

Yep, that's how Elon, er Trump, got elected. We had 2 not great choices, and too many people didn't want a brown woman in office so they voted against her. 😡 Only like 1% of people vote for 3rd parties do everyone considers that a wasted vote so all we get is trash in our government while everyone argues that their trash is better.

I read something the other day that China's population has peaked and started to decline. It listed the top 10 most populated countries and what year in the next 100 years the population would peak. Surprisingly (to me at least) they anticipated that the US population would not decline in the next 100 years, but both China and India would see significant declines. Estimates of course, but kind of interesting.

You're right, but in terms of history, it's also true. Europe, Asia, and N. Africa/E. Mediterranean have tons of preserved writings that help track the rise and fall of rulers and states. Archaeology, oral history, and a lot of cross-connecting are the only real tools for other regions until after 1500 CE.

Until 2019? So pre-Covid. You'll find, I think, that real wages fall off a cliff after (2020 onwards) because "times are hard, the economy is bad, etc" so the companies make their products more expensive and pay the workers less and, gee, I wonder where the difference goes.

In 1864, Black Americans were promised '40 Acres and a Mule' which included land and resources to formerly enslaved African Americans after the Civil War. It was the first major attempt to provide reparations to this population. An attempt to rectify virtually free labor for 400 years. As we all no president Andrew Johnson overturned the order and returned the land to white land owners. Effectively providing generational wealth for whites for centuries to come and cutting blacks out of their fair share.

And Euros will cry and say NO IT'S ALL AMERICA!!!!!!! Sorry Euros, you created and caused the slave trade in the US when you moved all of your agriculture to the colonies to be run by slavery. The US flag at the bottom there didn't exist until the last century of that chart, and it was still being funded by European countries. Ships built in England and Spain, manacles and stocks made in Sweden and Switzerland, crews from all over Europe. But yeah, it was the US. hahahahahahah

This chart was created by somebody who doesn't even know when the birth range of each generation is, and is likely 10 years out of date. Boomers were born between 1946 and 1964, making the 61-80 year old, NOT 55 to 64. Gen-X is roughly between 1965 and 1980, making them 45 to 60 years old, NOT 35-54, Millennials are 30 to 45 years old, and Gen-Z are between 15 and 29 years old, so Gen-Z/Millennial are between 15 and 45, NOT 18 and 34. Good job with the lack of math skills and reading comprehension, Bored Panda writers and creators!!

Your eye has its own special immune system (because white blood cells aren't very useful in a thing that isn't full of blood) and a special immunity privilege so the body's regular immune system doesn't attack it; however severe eye trauma can put eye antibodies into the blood which will, then, get a drastic immune response: drastic as in trying to kill off the other, working, eye. It's called sympathetic ophthalmitis.

School shootings would be a negligible number compared to overall shooting deaths. Less than 600 people have died in all school shootings since 2000. There's 10s of thousands of total gun violence deaths per years in the US, the vast majority of which are suic*des, followed by gang violence.

Somewhat more realistic, but not very. I've seen angry chimps. They come across as able to rip your arm off and beat you to death with it. If it's human vs chimp, the human loses. I'd much rather have to tackle a big dog - I mean, I wouldn't bet on me surviving, but I'd have some sort of a chance.

Looks good as long as you don't then consider other factors such as lead exposure, parental and individual education and other socioeconomic factors. Never mind that the number of executions is graded by 10s while the number of murders is graded by 5,000s. And are they really suggesting there were essentially no executions before the 1980s, or is this range simply more convenient for the point they're trying to make?

Compare it to any European country without the death penalty: all Western European countries have a lower murder rate, which surely suggests a negative correlation between executions and murder? Except it doesn't. Apparently, it's the risk of being caught rather than the details of the punishment that's the real deterrent - or so I have read.
