“Instagram vs Reality” Exposes The Truth About Those Unrealistically “Perfect” Pics

We all know that most people share an idealized version of themselves on social media, cherry-picking only the best images, thoughts, and experiences to share with the world. But some Instagram celebrities have taken this concept to the extreme, creating Instagram vs reality versions of themselves.

They bombard their followers with photoshopped images that are so far from reality that they can sow seeds of doubt in some people’s minds, leading them to strive for an unrealistic body image at great cost to their self-esteem and mental health.

Those “perfect” celebrity pics you see on Instagram are far from the casual snaps they appear to be

Instagram vs Reality Trend Comes to the Rescue

Luckily, some people see the problem in this and are trying to uncover the fakery that goes on behind the scenes of infamous Instagram photos. Previously, we featured Swiss blogger the_truth_is_not_pretty, who posts honest, real images side-by-side with ones that have been given the ‘Instagram treatment.’ This time, Bored Panda has an amusing and quite shocking “Instagram vs Reality” funny video by YouTube star Ethan Klein, who exposes the ugly truth of fake Instagram pictures behind some of the more famous influencers.

“I can’t get over the difference! Don’t believe what you see on Instagram folks”

Delivered with his usual comedic flair, Ethan skewers the obvious trickery that some of these influencers get up to on a regular basis in their Instagram posts. It all goes to show that everything you see online has to be taken with a pinch of salt, and under no circumstances should you compare yourself unfavorably to these people. They aren’t what they want you to think they are!

Why Do We Enjoy Reality vs Instagram Photos?

Away from the buffed and polished images we are presented with daily, it can actually be refreshing to see the human side of the famous people we admire. Social media initially gave us this opportunity to look behind the curtain. Sadly, though, most social media accounts of celebrities are now run by teams of advisors and managers who don’t allow anything to be shown unless it has been carefully vetted first.

While we admire, respect, and even idolize some celebrities, setting high expectations for ourselves, we somehow crave reassurance that they are human, too. It helps us to relate to them on a deeper level. Magazines with headlines screaming “Cameron Diaz without Make-Up” or “Beyonce’s Acne Problem” always sell well because they give people a little peek behind the perfectly-curated curtain of an Instagram filter vs reality. Still, perhaps it would be easier if there was less fakery, illusion, and lies in the first place.

If you’ve doubted yourself because of the seemingly perfect things you’ve seen on social media, watch the video below to see how Instagram vs reality body images distort our perception of ourselves. Share this article with your friends so that more people can see through the fakery and start appreciating their image!

I'm glad I saw this. I know a lot of what's out there is fake but I didn't realise the extent of the fakery I was seeing across multiple platforms. Everyone needs to see this

Agreed. At 40 years old, I;ve been in search of that perfect "poreless" look that foundation commercials show off for decades. I had no idea... I feel like a fool.

Sometimes less is more. Only a bit of make-up is mostly enough for a good and natural look. When it is overdone it makes this unnatural alien appearance.

Because its a competition. Women compete against each other all the time. Ever wonder why Dad bod is a thing? Mostly because men know and can call out the unrealistic body image that is attempted to be forced on us. We dont have time for that s**t. Exercise and eat good... thats it. No gym rats or reps reps reps. Meanwhile, women seem to have zero ability to call b******t where it is. The ONLY reason why this stuff becomes so prevalent is women keep giving attention to these fakers. Stop following them, looking at their posts, and buying their products. If you do that, they go away.

It’s sad that a generation who has the access to deconstruct this nonsense and affect real change (compared to all the commercial streamed mags and media of their parents youth) not only get sucked, but perpetuate it and perpetrate this c**p to shill and shill mindlessly chasing a phony dream. Astounding.

I feel like, why should I photoshop myself, when people who have met me won't be fooled. Then again, celebrities don't meet most of their followers. But there is the internet, which has other articles like this (I hope). I hate that women think they need to look perfect to be loved and accepted. One book said that if you think about your friends, you didn't choose them based on how attractive they look, and you don't hate family just because they're not perfect-looking. So that's how you know you have worth beyond how you look.

Why don't people show what they actually look like? It would be much more relatable and real. More people could help you with the problems that you don't want to face alone. There maybe people who will try to tear you down but we will always have someone to depend on no matter what. So everyone have a great day and just be you.

This is why a generation of young girls will grow up feeling inadequate! If all of these “influencers” would just show the world what they REALLY looked like, and be honest about themselves, we wouldn’t have such ridiculous body standards to compare ourselves to! The problem is, no one wants to risk losing their followers by being the change. What’s more important, a generation of young girls feeling good about themselves, or some silly instagram followers? :(

My best friend and I LOVE to rant about celebrities, mainly how they're so shallow and the public blindly follows them. Also how celebrities SHOULD SET A GOOD EXAMPLE FOR THE PUBLIC. ESPECIALLY KIDS. but no. They don't set a good example, and I think we should either stop glorifying celebrities (at least the Kardashians for sure) or pursue them to set a good example, or put this in widespread Media Education.

So long as people are insecure & aren't raised by their parents to love & respect themselves, they will continue to seek self-worth outside. People need to grow up & start working on their childhood traumas. This will then allow them to start loving themselves. Once they do that, they will have no need to worship others & the fake actors will just fade away. So long as there are people who worship them, the evils of the world will use them to control society. You have no idea how harmed people in Hollywood are. It would shock you if you knew what really goes on.

When someone cares more about their looks then themselves, they are very insecure. Be yourself, you are great just the way you are. Yes we should always strive to improve ourselves, but what's most important is improving: 1. Our intelligence & learning what is going on out there & who's trying to control us 2. Our empathy towards others 3. Our love for ourselves so we can love others 4. Growing as a person, & I DON'T mean by working out at the gym, although yes, exercise (natural) is needed for the body & mind. Hugs

I too thought pore free makeup was a thing. No matter how "smooth" I thought my foundation look was a closer look showed pores. I now know it's just cheating with a filter. I'm to the point where I feel certain filters and photoshop should just be banned. They create a literal unrealistic look for people and they just cause many people to have low self-esteem. The Kardashians are the worse for this, especially Kylie and Khloe it seems.

Not to go off here or insult anyone, but a lot of this is the influence of societal standards. Admittedly, that's not the only cause, but from what I've seen through my limited worldview there is a lot of beauty ideas forced on men and women alike, as well as any other gender people might identify as. As for the pictures themselves, some of them did look better photoshopped. But it's ok for people- especially celebrities- to have an off day sometimes. You don't need to look instagram-worthy every minute of every day.

Some of these are inaccurate, for example, the first actually isn't the same person and you can tell if you look at the face and hair color, and the one where she is laying down and there is a mirror is reflecting the front of her stomach as well (not just her back). People shouldn't care about how people look in magazines, though, it matters what's inside, but hey what would we be if we didn't atleast try to look great?

The saddest part of all is that this photoshopping leaves young kids all over the world unrealistic expectations on how they shoud look to be accepted and succesfull. It's estimated that this year the cosmetic make-up market will reach sales up to 70 billion dollars worldwide. That's enough to pay off the American national debt 3 times and still have enough money to give teachers a 100% salary raise.

Egos beyond comprehension is the simple explanation for all of this wasted effort. And if you say, "Got it, I can understand how a big ego would lead to this kind of behavior", you don't "got it" yet. You only get it when you understand it's impossible to understand the size of these peoples' egos.

It's very sick. A sickness that's been around for a long time. The pain women will go through to do this to themselves. Chinese women whiten their faces (Koreans too) & stuff their feet into shoots that are too small. It's terrible what society has become.

How insecure do you have to be that something like this makes you feel better, everyone takes good and bad pictures, Bieber or Harry Styles having an outbreak of spotty skin or some random Instagram model deciding to post the picture that does not make her stomach look fat is not going to change the way you look. No one looks good all the time and we all want to publicly show ourselves at our best, realistically who posts bad pictures online and judging by the popularity of filters with teens, it's the norm now a days. Shocking random woman in full make-up does not look the same first thing in the morning.

Loren CLEARLY smooths out her pictures and edits them. Poor Tana too like everyone has tummy “flab” it helps if you flex and learn how to put your body right. The photo of Trisha with the flower in her hair... clearly she has no makeup on in the seconds picture... no one looks like the one on the left... if you think they do you’re an idiot. The only thing wrong with photoshop is if you edit it heavily and change everything or say you didn’t edit when you did.

Look, if you're going t photoshop your waist or whatever to be thinner, cut out your body, move it to a new layer, hide it for now. Now, fill the emptiness with the background by repeating it or clonebrushing it into the empty space. You don't have to do the whole area, just the couple of inches worth of space that you want your body to no longer take up. Now make your body layer visible again. Adjust as you please, you won't break the background now.

Why do women put makeup on so thick? I understand those who want to change their lip colour or add a bit of colour to their cheeks or even a bit of eye makeup BUT to wear makeup that looks like gloss paint has been applied directly to their skin - why?

I hope this wakes people UP!!! People have to STOP worshipping other people & start worshipping themselves. Stars, musicians, actors, models are all just people. Most of them are f****d up. This is all done on purpose. The evils of the world want you to hate yourself just the way you are so you have no self confidence. I'm actually NOT joking. I study how they brainwash society. You don't want to be like them, you want to be like yourself. All this garbage you put on your face, the tattoos, the bulging muscles, it's all superficial. It actually harms you in more ways than one. Please take some alternative therapy courses (I have a list if you want them) & work on getting rid of your childhood trauma that has caused you to adore others & dislike or hate yourself. Our world will become much better if people do this. Peace, Love & Serenity

Our intelligence & learning what is going on out there & who's trying to control us 2. Our empathy towards others 3. Our love for ourselves so we can love others 4.

I saw a similar post about Korean girls wearing fake pointy noses and chins, big color lenses, chin tape, false eyelashes and what not. It's crazy but to know it is a relief =)

It's very sick. A sickness that's been around for a long time. The pain women will go through to do this to themselves. Chinese women whiten their faces (Koreans too) & stuff their feet into shoots that are too small. It's terrible what society has become.

The photos of men arn’t so bad but the instagramed women are horrible! Who on earth would actually want to look like that? 🤔

Haha! Wow, excuse my candidness, but som' dees bitches is uuuugly. Like the Jenners? WOOF. But I gotta say, Melania is prettier with her smiley wrinkles visible. That brushed look isn't good on any one. Beauty is in the structure of the face it self, not the make-up applied.

I sent this to 3 of my family members as well as sharing it on facebook. Seriously, I think is so sad. How impossible is it to attain this beauty because it is a fraud. Yet yound men and women want to look like this. I am glad there are people out there exposing it.

Look at how many people on this article downvoted people speaking the truth. Or you got not votes at all. Just terrible. This is a sickness in society.

Some of them look like a completely different person, like if you saw them IRL you would not even know who they were!! O_O

A friend of mine once said, he thinks women who wear tons of make up to the point they look like a completely different person, should come with a disclosure as it's essentially lying *chuckles*

It's not just lying, it's a sign of huge insecurity & lack of self love. So yes, in a way they are even lying to themselves, by hiding who they really are.

Sounds like you're the one who needs therapy judging others harshly for things that aren't even part of this post

"I thought the “no pore look” was just excellent makeup". The no pore look is terrible, makeup or no. These girls look like they were shot with Homer's makeup gun. There are people that actively work to try to achieve this clownshow look?
