I think they are tiny sea shells. If not, the amount of detail and shading is extremely realistic.

None of this armor protects against pesticides, does it? So where does the modern world protection come in?

You don't need an excuse to make things. Also insects will outlive humans by a fair bit, they are really resilient. Also your work is beautiful. :)
