At the grocery store, we crossed paths with the lady in white shopping and loading her cart. We go to check out, and she is there, making the self-checkout attendant unload her cart, scan, and bag each item. Then she had the attendant place the bags in her cart. Note that she had way more items than you should for self-checkout, and a recommendation was made by the employee that she consider going to the standard checkout, which had nobody in line, and she refused. Poor attendant had to stop every so often to go to every other self-checkout and do overrides and I'd checks. The customer was perfectly capable of doing all this herself.

Not that I've seen. And I'm not at all excusing this woman's actions, but sometimes when I have a cart full of groceries I still have to use self checkout because they don't have any manned cash registers. Or they have one and it's got a line out the door with other people's full carts. I've never, and will never, make the self-checkout person ring up my items for me though. That's a new level of entitlement I've never seen.

My mother works what they call the bullpen at Wally World (self checkout). She has customers demand she check them out as well, but she always refuses. Her logic is if Wally World wants her to check people out, they need to put her on an individual register and if the customer wants that experience, they need to go to a manned register.

I can understand this sentiment, but the shop manager also probably dont want to spend those resources on people like this. Because it disrupts the shopping experience for many other people there as well. And they will be backnand act just as entiteled time and again. This is a time drain when they probably would want them doing other tasks. Its also wear and tear on their employees physical abilities, as something like this easily excasberates tendinitis, bad backs etc. We have a mindset that often give room for people to act like this, but noone actually wants it. At least nobody but that one person.

Look, the attendant is just a worker and doesn't make enough to deal with this s**t. A manager should've told the lady to go to a standard checkout. But why even agree to do this in the first place? I guess the threat of losing her job might be the reason but not shutting this level entitlement down is why it happens, and keeps happens, in the first place. Why are we allowing this completely ridiculous things to happen?

I saw someone at a WalMart self check a couple of years ago - the husband, at the front of the cart was scanning the small items and bagging them, his wife was at the back of the cart bagging the big items.. I told the guy as they went thru and he just shrugged his shoulders at me. And we wonder why the prices keep going up.

The concept of the customer is always right needs to end. Empower the people who work in customer service to say no to unreasonable requests. Karen culture exists because of this nonsense. Employee probably would have gotten in trouble if they told this customer self check out is a literal definition.

The attendant may have offered to assist. (I’ve had that happen many times) We don’t know the whole story. Perhaps the customer is trying to protest that the store doesn’t have an option to have a tradition store clerk.

So, one of my customers came in today with the gift of a bag of morels. I was pretty happy and grateful for their finding and thinking of me. I gave him a free dessert and my thanks. As he was leaving, I got a gut feeling that he'd picked them up on my property! I work a lot, so I was waiting until my weekend to get them myself. I don't even want to think about how many I could have had, but I'm still grateful for the gift. Truly, a mixed blessing.
