More than half of the world now uses social media. That’s around 5 billion people posting whatever they want, whenever they want. While a lot of the content out there is entertaining, informative and interesting, there’s also some that might make you question why certain individuals don’t have their devices confiscated while they sit in the naughty corner. From misinformation, to sheer stupidity, to a lack of critical thinking, there’s no shortage of unsharp tools in the proverbial digital shed.

Thankfully, there’s an online community that makes it their mission to shame those who refuse to think before they type, speak or act. The Facepalm subreddit has more than 8.2 million members, calling out people who have proven themselves to be fools without fear or favor. Bigotry is not tolerated, states the page, though facepalming at it is welcome. We've put together a list of the most cringey, awkward and downright dumb things shared on the page that shine a light on humanity’s beacon of stupidity. Bored Panda also reached out to William DiAntonio, founder and CEO of Reputation911 for some advice on how to conduct oneself online and what to do if or when things fall apart.

And it's no joke. I once talked to my grandmother (who had still seen things like diphtheria in her youth) about vaccinations and she had absolutely no effs to give about anti-vaxxers. She said no one in their right mind would refuse protection against those diseases.

In a world where we are bombarded with information left, right, and center, critical thinking is just that: critical. If we were to believe everything we read online, watch on tv, or hear in person, the consequences could be fatal.

Monash University defines critical thinking as “a kind of thinking in which you question, analyse, interpret, evaluate, and make a judgment about what you read, hear, say, or write.” Good critical thinking is about making reliable judgements based on reliable information, notes the university.

When you lack the ability to think critically, and believe everything you read or hear, you run the risk of doing or posting some very stupid or questionable things online. And in turn, ripping your reputation to shreds. What you put out there influences the way people perceive you.

And while you can’t control everything others say, you can manage the content you publish, your responses to feedback, and address defamation to influence the public conversation, warns online reputation management firm Reputation911.

"Online reputation management (ORM) is the process of shaping how individuals or companies are perceived online. It involves monitoring digital presence, addressing negative content, and proactively building a strong, credible brand across search engines and social media platforms," DiAntonio tells us during our interview. Reputation911 cautions that social media can be a double-edged sword. Things can go either way, depending on what's posted. As we've seen time and again, content can go viral in a flash on social media, and this isn't always a good thing. Managing your content on social media is critical, warns the agency, and using socials strategically can help with your online image.

"One of the biggest mistakes people make on social media is posting impulsively, without considering how their words or images may be perceived in different contexts. Avoid sharing controversial opinions in a way that invites backlash, disclosing too much personal information, or engaging in heated arguments that can escalate," DiAntonio told Bored Panda.

The expert adds that it's important to remember that even deleted posts can be screenshotted and resurface later. He says it’s always best to pause before posting and ask "Would I be comfortable seeing this on the front page of a news site?"

I am on the fence about this, transgender M2F are physically still males and that would be an unfair advantage over females, F2M transgenders would be no competition for males , just introduce a 3rd and 4th competition level for transgenders and you are all set.

Not disagreeing that there are bigger issues. But saying that this only affects 100 trans athletes is exactly why this is a problem. It's not a problem for those 100 people, is a problem for the cis female athletes who unfairly have to compete with people who may identify as female but have the body of a man. If trans M2F athletes compete with women, then there is no point in any women leagues at all.

Trophy Husband. You really don't understand the transition process at all do you? M2F trans women do NOT have "men's bodies". They take female hormones (just like many women take birth control pills) that make their bodies express as female. Their musculature is adjusted. Depending on when they transitioned, they MIGHT have denser bones, but the hormones make them female just like cis women's hormones make THEM female. This is such an invented issue. You people just need to get a bigger problem, because this is NOT it.

Or you could NOT F*****G CARE! The president of the NCAA got up in front of congress and confirmed that there are about 10 trans athletes that are competing at the national level. That's it. You're concerned about 10 kids out of thousands. If you want "fairness" there are height and weight classes. That's how you can balance things out. But people don't want that, they want to find ways to exclude trans people because they don't know trans people and they don't want to learn about them. All you people wringing your hands and claiming you care about fairness are exhausting because no, you don't. You just want to target some kids who have it hard enough already. Seriously! You want it fair? Okay! Height/weight classes and the playing field is fair! But no one actually wants it fair, they want THEIR kids to have the advantage, and they DON'T want to see or hear from trans kids

@UKGrandad. It's more to do with the sheer amount of time, energy, and pure hatred that is poured into a 'problem' that affects a tiny minority of people when such huge issues exist all around. It would be like saying "Well 100 athletes are using d***s so let's use that as an excuse to dehumanise all d**g addicts and at the same time deflect funding, care and research from the issues".

Becky, you say that it only affects a tiny minority but that is ignoring the ~50% of the population who are being told that they have to accept female-identifying males into their single-s*x spaces, sports, organisations, etc. in the name of inclusion. You're not thinking about how in schools, for example, the girls might be affected if they have to allow female-identifying boys into their changing rooms. Yes, it might just be one or two trans girls in there, but how many girls will have lost their privacy in order to accommodate them?

How’s the single-s*x bathroom situation working out in your home? Let’s be honest: women and girls face far greater risks from men they already know—partners, exes, authority figures like priests, police officers, pastors, doctors, or dentists—than from the imagined threat of transgender individuals. The idea that transgender people pose a significant danger is not only unfounded but distracts from the real issues at hand. If you’re genuinely concerned about safety, the most impactful step you can take is to challenge your own biases and ensure you’re not passing those prejudices on to the next generation. Education and empathy, not fearmongering, are the keys to creating a safer, more inclusive world.

My experience with those who transition is that they don't do it for sports participation. They do it to become who they feel themselves to be. Human notions of gender and sexuality have been stuffed into psychiatric 'straight' jackets for centuries, largely due to the influence of churches and their armies.

If trans women have been undergoing hormone therapy for a long time, their muscle mass advantages are just about nil. There are other advantages of course, but you actually don't see trans women consistently winning over cis women. More importantly, this sports debate is always the excuse to deny and fear-monger about trans people. Tbh i don't care all that much about sports medals when compared with human rights and all that...

Instead of just making stuff up that sounds right to you, try looking for the actual facts. Trans women retain a large advantage over women regardless of how long they've been on hormone therapy. A recent U.N. report has stated that nearly 900 medals in women's sports have been won by M2F athletes. This debate is not about fear-mongering; sport is just one part of a much larger issue about women retaining their rights as women. You might not care about medals but women who train hard for years to reach the top of their game certainly do.

There's a solution for this. Puberty blockers would limit the amount of testosterone produced in a M2F transition. Simply test athletes for testosterone. The instead of male or female, athletes are judged based on their hormones

When M2F begin their treatment, their muscle mass pretty much stays the same, but as they continue their treatment, their muscle mass decreases making competition more equitable. However, the small percentage of M2F sports participation should be a very minor concern of our government. They should be focusing on housing, food prices, and health coverage that's rampant throughout the nation.

at least when i grew up there (the 80s-90s), in the state of florida, if there is/was not an equivalent girl's sports team at a high school, any girl who tried out and met the qualifications to make the team was legally allowed to play. not to say it all went perfectly and there wasn't a lot of social discrimination. but i made the wrestling team at my school and one of my female friends was the most petite, blonde junior varsity quarterback. we both surpassed guys to qualify for our respective teams. we were not the only girls competing on teams comprised primarily of boys. so yeah, while there are some physiological differences, there are sports/individuals/situations where women and men can absolutely out compete each other in sports.

So how many f2m athletes are beating men in competitions? How many m2f athletes are beating women in competitions? There is a very good reason that we hear demands for m2f inclusion in women's sports but not for f2m inclusion in men's sports, and that reason is that the latter know that they cannot compete against men on a level playing field, whereas the former are aware of the massive advantage they retain against women, so please don't pretend that it works both ways.

I don't understand why people in this comment section are arguing so much about this issue. This isn't about who is included or not, or who is saying what, or who is insinuating what. The post is literally talking about how there's bigger problems than this. And look, a transgender person recreationally playing sport with someone of their gender is quite honestly none of our business. At the professional level, we have height and weight classes. Genuine studies have proven that trans females don't have significant advantages over cis females, and certainly do not consistently win. I understand that some less ethical cis men might take advantage of this and try to underhandedly cut the competition, but rules and regulations can be put into place to avoid this, and present an inclusive atmosphere for all. There really isn't much to argue about here. Everyone deserves to play sport, and everyone deserves an equal chance to win. Can we please just agree on that?

2 additional competition levels is not going to get you anywhere. Within the male population the difference in levels of testosterone is already making it an unfair fight. Same for female. Some females naturally have higher levels of testosterone and those are the ones that usually win. So it is already unfair. Winning is not completely due to dedication, training and talent...

I agree... I'm not saying this is the biggest issue we have, but M2F trans who completed as an F in the past were cheating and using discomfort to get their way. The records should be stripped and titles revoked. Teams that allowed it were cheating too. And going forward either they all compete against the men or there are new leagues like you suggested. So many things follow this pattern. Racism is a huge problem, but reverse discrimination isn't the answer. Service animals need to be allowed in stores, but ESAs should stay home. And I'm all about letting people earn more of they work harder, but set limits, no one should be worth a billion dollars!

The research does not support what you are saying. Transgender females are NOT physically equivalent to cis males. Do they still have physical advantage over cis females in sports? The research is mixed but it is leaning toward "not significantly."

Jesus Christ. No. In fact, everything you just posted is wrong. Recent studies have shown that the hormone treatments taken during M2F transitions often leave the user in a disadvantaged state for women's sports. Likewise a simple google search can show you plenty of F3M trans folks who can easily hold their own against other men. H**l, women's sports was pretty much invented because men are afraid of losing to women. The whole "women are weaker than men" thing is a d**n myth.

Please, find one - just one - event from the last Olympics in which the woman who won gold would have beaten the gold medalist in the equivalent men's event. Just one. Track, field, swimming, weightlifting, cycling, rowing: any discipline that has an equivalent men's and women's competition.

What I find chafing is there is NO mention in all this falderal about F2M. Trans doesn't mean "used to be a guy". It means "used to be opposite. And, as LB mentions, the percentage of trans Americans is well under 10%, across all age groups. The percentage that actually want to play sports is miniscule.

I'm also on the fence about this. I have always believed that people have the right to live their lives as they choose, as long as what they do doesn't affect the lives of people around them in a negative way. The transgirls/women in sports issue is a tough one. On the one hand, I agree that all people should have the right to compete in sports, but on the other hand, I can certainly understand how some women would feel that a man who became a woman might have some unfair advantages. And while there has been at least one study that says this isn't true, I think more research is needed in this area. Is it possible that transgirls/women have some advantages over cisgendered girls/women? I think it depends on the sport.

I'm not a trans person, and I don't know a lot about this, but I do know that once someone starts taking hormones, their body physically changes. Stuff like muscle mass, smell, and probably other things that I'm forgetting. So if a trans athlete has taken hormones, they do not have a 'biological advantage' over cis competitors. And even if they did, why in the world should something like CHESS be divided by s*x?

Actually they do still retain a physical advantage. This is all down to how testosterone exposure during puberty. Lowering testosterone levels will decrease their existing muscle mass but they will still be proportionally stronger than women. As for chess, I believe that women are actually allowed to compete in male games however a separate women's class was created due to issues with harassment and to encourage more women to play at a professional level. It wasn't due to gender differences impacting play.

Obviously intellectual games are not in the category as physical sports. Hormones chemically change your body not physically. They don't produce a 6'2" stature, or let someone be more muscularly flexible. The game of golf is called golf for men and women, but they start at different tees and use b***s with a different compression rating. Because men and women so physically different. Baseball/softball. Men's gymnastics does not look like women's gymnastics. I have heard of no one having qualms about a trans kid joining model UN. Knock it off.

I'm kind of on the fence too, but the problem with this argument is that it's not fair to start with. People are born with random mutations all the time that make them better at certain sports. Longer arms make you better at rock climbing. More testosterone makes you better at weightlifting - and men have varying amounts depending on genetics, so we don't even need to bring gender into it and it's already unfair. Michael Phelps is clearly miles better than everyone else at swimming, but they're not talking about banning him to give others a chance. Maybe what we SHOULD be looking at is some sort of "weight class" categories in all sports that put you in a bracket based on your talent and/or physical characteristics and then you compete within that bracket. I don't know if that's the solution, but I do think we should use this discussion to reconsider sports and competition in general and think outside the box while we do. It's doesn't have to be black or white.

Im generally pro trans rights but I think it’s ok to separate sports by biological gender. We separate them by age already, and I’ve never heard anyone argue against that. My example I use is if a 12 foot tall alien came down and wanted to play basketball it would probably ruin the sport. Yes shaq had a size advantage but it’s not like the lakers won every game by 100 points. The goal should be fair competition and unfortunately biological s*x can create a large enough advantage in some situations that I just don’t personally want to see it the same way I don’t want to see shaq post up a 12 year old.

This is a man's perspective. Allowing transgender women to compete is not fair. Biologically their physique is male and therefore not fair to the females. To be inclusive, I suggest adding the group transgenders.

'Labeled' as transgender? Transgender people *are* transgender. Actual bigots aside the problem isn't that they're trans, it's that they're demanding inclusion in women's sports (and all aspects of women's single-s*x facilities, etc.). I have seen the idea of separate trans categories floated many times and every time it has been massively objected to on various grounds but which all come down to one thing; they want to be in the women's category. Just as with the bathroom issue, they claim that they just want to able to play their sports and there is nothing stopping them from doing just that. There is already an international Gay Games competition and there's nothing stopping trans people from organising their own leagues and competitions - just as women had to. But they reject this option because they don't 'just want to play sports', they specifically want to play in the women's games.

People shouldn't have to decide between insulin and removing men from women's sport, both are important and women rights shouldn't ever be sacrificed or used as a bargening chip, I hate this whataboutery, Is he saying women and girls should give up their sporting places, dreams and scholarships so people can have insulin? Female athletes have lost nearly 900 medals to transgender rivals competing against them in women’s sporting categories, an eye-opening United Nations report has revealed. The study — titled “Violence against women and girls in sports” — stated that more than 600 female athletes have been bested at various events by competitors who were born male. “According to information received, by 30 March 2024, over 600 female athletes in more than 400 competitions have lost more than 890 medals in 29 different sports,” the report said.

Despite your best attempts, sometimes the things will still hit the fan. If this happens and you find your reputation rapidly heading for the drain, the experts advise that you do damage control as fast as possible. Here's what Reputation911 suggests you do when things go south...

First, do some research to figure out the extent of the damage so you know what you're dealing with. "If a post leads to unexpected backlash, the first step is to assess whether removing it is the best course of action. Deleting a post doesn’t erase screenshots, but it can help de-escalate the situation," says DiAntonio.

"If the reaction is minor, it may be best to let it pass. However, if the post has gone viral, addressing it head-on, through an apology or clarification, may be necessary. The key is to avoid defensive responses that fuel further criticism. Seeking professional reputation management guidance can also help in cases where significant damage control is needed."

The agency advises that if you are at fault for the situation, you need to make amends. This means issuing a statement apologizing for any wrongdoings that have affected customers, stakeholders, and others.

But the experts say simply issuing an apology is not enough. You need to create a long-term recovery plan. If you just say that you will do better, people won’t trust you. Instead, you have to show them that you are doing better, warns Reputation911.

The company says the next step is to proactively communicate any changes you have made to address the issues with your audience. And then to make it a priority to follow through on any commitments you have made. Consistency helps to rebuild trust with your audience, adds the team. But be patient because the recovery process doesn’t happen overnight, and can often take a long time.
