Indonesia Street Portraits

I took this series of photographs in Indonesia, while travelling from Jakarta, crossing Java and ending up in Bali. While travelling, I met many interesting people. I felt drawn to capture their uniqueness. Sometimes only getting a brief moment to get their attention and look for approval to take my photo. In that split second focusing on their eyes as they met my camera.

I didn’t get to talk to most of them. I didn’t get to find out anything unique about their lives. We didn’t share the same language, our cultures and life conditions were profoundly different. I was so genuinely interested in the people there. They were so kind, so honest and so different than the ones I normally photograph. I found it challenging but deeply rewarding.

They have not spoken a word to you, yet I believe the images tell so much about them. They are uniquely human not vastly different from you or I.

We waited for the same train in Yogyacarta. I offered him a cigarette so I could take a photo of him. He nodded with approval, took my cigarette and gave my one of his.

One of the most interesting faces I photographed while travelling in Indonesia. We was a gate keeper in one of many temples we visited. So much wisdom and kindness in those eyes.

The quality of these photographs is magnificent, and you captured the spirit of Jakarta really well. I enjoyed these very much (especially the "Young guy in Jakarta") and hope to see more from you!
