Man Discovers Stranded Dog On Remote Island And Changes His Life Forever
InterviewFive years ago, a photographer named Wesley White unexpectedly came across a starving puppy in the middle of the waters off the coast of Belize. The dog was left alone near an abandoned fishing shack, so Wesley took it upon himself to bring the dog back to safety in his kayak.
Since Wesley was only visiting, his flight home was scheduled for 36 hours later. To ensure the safety and care of the dog, whom he named Winston, Wesley found a vet and arranged for foster care to nurse Winston back to health. A couple of months later, Wesley and Winston were reunited, and fast forward to today, Winston lives the happy life he deserves.

We interviewed Wesley to learn more about his story with Winston. He described their initial meeting in the middle of the open waters.
“The moment I found the puppy was surreal. Resting in the shade of mangroves, I suddenly noticed a sweet, wiggling puppy on an abandoned fishing shack.”
“Seeing him without food or water, I felt an overwhelming urge to help. The thought of leaving him to fend for himself, knowing survival was impossible, was unbearable,” wrote Wesley

Determined to save Winston, Wesley brought the dog into his kayak and paddled back to the mainland. With only 36 hours left in Belize, Wesley had to act quickly to ensure Winston’s safety

We were wondering what motivated Wesley to take immediate action to help the starving puppy, knowing he only had 36 hours left in Belize.
“My motivation stemmed from the belief that, in today’s interconnected world, I could reach out to a global community of animal lovers for support. Despite the time constraint of only 36 hours, I knew I had to act quickly to give him a fighting chance,” wrote Wesley.

“The rescue effort came together seamlessly with the help of friends on social media and the locals, particularly employees at the resort I was photographing”

“They connected me with Dr. Mia and a local humane society. With their support, a network of helpers—including Dr. Mia and resort staff—rallied to ensure the puppy, later named Winston, received the care he needed.”

After Wesley left Belize, he stayed committed to reuniting with Winston once the dog was healthy and cleared for travel

In the meantime, Winston was taken care of by Melanie, a foster mom at a humane society in Belize. She kept Wesley updated with photos and messages about Winston’s recovery

Wesley also shared what it was like to receive updates from Dr. Mia about Winston’s recovery.
He wrote: “The first update was unforgettable—learning Winston’s blood test results were positive and that he would survive was a huge relief. Updates from Dr. Mia and his foster mother, Melanie, were constant reminders of his progress. Watching Winston gain weight and grow healthier was heartwarming, and the speed of his transformation was astonishing.”

“Reuniting with Winston was emotional and heartwarming. Since then, he has become a cherished member of our family”

“His excitement to be with us each morning and his affectionate kisses remind me daily of the incredible journey we’ve shared. Winston’s love and gratitude have only deepened our bond.”

Amen! The world should treat us the way we treat animals.
Load More Replies...I'm amazed Winston was still alive, being that malnourished. *Someone* wanted Wesley to find Winston. Great story + so glad Winston has a great forever home.
Now if only we would show our fellow humans who are in need such compassion. Instead someone sees a needy immigrant and thinks it's not their problem, heartless
I am so happy Winston was saved. Bless Wesley and family for their compassion
Oh my heart! Winston, Wesley, and the entire family are so blessed! And Winston’s ears—too cute!!
I'm crying. Best story I've ever read on here. Winston, you stole my whole heart and I'm ok with that.
Thank you for this lovely story, Hidrėlėy. It warms my heart as I sit here snuggling with my kittens from our local shelter. Bless anyone who takes care of an animal in need.
THIS is why I come to this site. What a good boi and good on the photographer. WInston is a gem...
In our "throw away" society it's comforting to know there's still good people out there to love the beautiful souls I call God's Creatures!
Omg can I just say I love Winston and thise ears are so cute. This story made my heart ache and rejoice. Those photos told this amazing story as hard as it was to see some of them. Winston is a fighter! It was no consequence that you stopped there for lunch. Winston was meant to be in your family.
Wonderful human being who has given this animal another chance to thrive 👏
Thank you for being the person you are. Tears fill my eyes but for a great reason. To think someone would put a puppy/dog/animal in the middle of nowhere (of course to die) should be left there for a month to feel what Winston went through. I absolutely love your heart. God Bless!!🫶🏽
I'm crying there is always someone that cares about these babies like I do God bless you!
You have a beautiful little family there, thank you for saving him
Beautiful story dude, that is the most amazing and beautiful dog I have ever seen; I am delighted by your amazing heart, in giving this pooch not only a second chance, but also a beautiful family and by the looks of it a very beautiful LIFE!

Wonderful to give Winston a new adventure for life!! Lucky fur baby!! Thanks Wesley for your kind, compassionate & loving heart! 🐾❤️🙏🤩🤗
Your a good man, so many people would have walked away, animal are not much different from humans , there are basic needs that apply to us all & the world would be a better place if more people realized that.
I love that story so many people put their dog somewhere and thank God for people rescuing them. I love dogs. I don’t have a dog at this time, but it is so sad sometimes when I see a dog so skinny, it breaks my heart.
Give that man a lifetime supply of dog food for that wonderful act of love!
Amazing people! Great job Wesley, Mia and Melanie. Wonderful team effort for Winston… God bless you.
did we ever find out how sweet winston ended up on that island?
There are just some moments in life that are so God. Those moments when you can't turn a blind eye to suffering a.d you are there in the right moment and place. This is what amazes me about the hand of God. He cares about His creation. Am so thankful for Winston that he was rescued. There is nothing greater than love. As an animal loverI appreciate that you and family stepped up. Just a small amount of compassion can.move mountains and change lives. We had 4 Angilolian shepherds dumped in our community. I could not turn a blind eye. Beautiful dogs. My husband and I took them in until a rescue could come for them. They were starving. All have families now except one is fostered until he can find a permanent home. He is like 120lbs so I couldn't keep any of them as we live in a small mobile. But we did what we could and helped take them off the streets. I appreciate seeing others who step up. I don't want to live with regret and miss those supernatural moments presented to me.
Wow!! wat a Great person that guy!! People are so cruel to animals and they should find the old owner who left him stranded and take his a*s to an island and leave him!!!!!! Wat a beautiful dog with those radar ears!!!!!
