From ancient times to the present day, slavery was a part of many different cultures, nationalities, and religions. It was first mentioned in the earliest records, such as the Mesopotamian Code Of Hammurabi (c. 1860 BC), and it can, unfortunately still be found in some countries around the world. Although the legal positions of slaves have differed in different times and places, today, domestic slavery is no longer legal anywhere in the world. However, in some form or another, it still appears.
American history is not an exception here. In the USA, having black slaves, was a legal institution in most states during the 18th and 19th centuries. Before the law to prohibit the slave trade was enacted, they were treated like any other commodity you might buy. There were times when slaves were sold to the person who bid the most for them. Sometimes, chattel slavery also destroyed families since the bidder only wanted to buy the strongest and healthiest family member.
As shocking as these slavery facts sound, when the slave ship was about to arrive, the ads for auctions where slaves could be bought appeared all over the city in the form of posters. You can see some of these vintage ads below, but we must warn you – they’re not for the fainthearted, but you cannot erase historical facts. (h/t)

It's interesting to see where the issues with law enforcement started. It shows that this is nothing knew.
This was published by Abolitionists. This shows the roots and seeds of our beliefs today. It's both cringe-worthy and hopeful at the same time.
But this one was warning black people, right? The person who made it was looking out for their well-being at the time
Exactly. It's so hopeful but so sad at the same time. The fact they were even having to work them in the first place is awful.

I wish we never brought them here ,,just imagine a world where violent protest were rare ,and music wasn't bragging about fat a*s hoes ,baggy clothes, not to mention the left over 400 billon dollars social services would have to help pore white families out ..if only
Just so you all know "picinniny" was used as a slur for prepubescent black girls back then.
As if they were livestock! Sickening the depths people would sink to for profit.
They literally were livestock. Bought, sold, financed, and leased. They were tools and currency. Slaves were often repossessed and kept in banks because owners couldn't pay on their slave mortgages. That's how lots of black Americans learned their family history.
Load More Replies...We need to see these kinds of things to know why, as a society, we DO NOT want this now, and also to show as a society that we CAN grow and become better. Racism still exists, it always will, but it is so much smaller now. I see lots of interactions between people of different races, and 95% of the time, people are reasonably civil and mostly polite. So yes, this is AWFUL, but we are changing, quickly, too.
Load More Replies..."Picinniny" yes and it was used for babies too; even in this country
Crazy how they used "excellent cook" for Sallie. So they think she is great at something, yet not worth anything? shame.
I know this is history already, but even reading it now from the safety of my home still makes me fall sick.
Unfortunately, it wasn't back then. I'm glad it is today though.
Load More Replies...Wow. I don't generally use the term "buck" or "wench" but I will make sure never to use them again. This is disgraceful.
Of course. That was the norm for society and slave owners back then. Slavery in Europe probably dates back more than 2500 years. And it was white slaves that they had been using up until Europeans entered into the cheaper more lucrative blacks slave trade markets which lasted for about 300 years. Conversely, Africans entered Southern Europe and occupied/dominated and enslaved whites for approximately 800 years until they were pushed out by a Spaniard king.

$1200 back then would have been $1.2 million in today's money. It might be the most immoral thing in the world, and I agree with that, but to that guy, it was just business. We really have no place to judge today. Can't change the past. My ancestors fought for the North. We supported freedom.
Sorry Thomas I disagree. We have to judge this type of thing to make sure it never resurfaces again. There is no way the guy just thought it was "business". People know when something is wrong or right. Yes you can justify doing wrong but inside you just know. It's called having a soul.

This is the one ring's fault. Governor Bilbo is totally corrupted by the power of the ring. And as stated I quote " powerless to prevent it "
I know I shouldn't be surprised of any atrocities done by humans, but I still am. A man is going to be handed over to a murderous mob so he can be burned. How civilised.
No, you should be surprised. Surprised, in shock and appalled. That's your ethics at work there, your sense of morality. The thing that allows us to bring positive changes. ^_-

Load More Replies...OMG! THEY LITERALLY ARE TREATING THEM LIKE TOOLS! JUST FARM TOOLS!
Wait till you learn that people used to finance their slaves as well through the bank. If you were late on your "slave mortgage" they'd literally repossess them. Many black scholars discovered their family history by researching old bank records. People also refinanced their slaves.
Load More Replies...Slavery was the result of war, colonization, debt etc. for generations, among many, many cultures. The Transatlantic Slave Trade to The Americas was purely commercial. It was the largest scale subjugation of people in human history. Though only wealthy/comparatively wealthy white families or individuals owned slaves, all white people in slave states benefited from the forced labor of captive humans. We, as a nation, won the struggle to end slavery in the U.S. Racism in US society lessens with every generation. Sadly, we have seen a surge in racist language and activity these past 2 years. The horrible fact is that slavery is still present in many countries today.
Came to buy a wagon but, ya know what, might as well buy a couple human beings while I'm here.
the sentance likely young women with three children (CHILDREN) also at the same time on the SAME TERMS three Mules. THEY ARE ACTING AS IF HUMAN SLAVES ARE THE SAME VALUE AS HORSES OR 'MULES'
I think the mules and horses were treated better then the slaves.

This says nothing for the morals of those people and it is still rubbing off.
You know what’s REALLY sick? The 94 were very likely over 200 originally. Find information about the mortality rate on slave galleys and the way the dead (mostly infants and children) were treated and thén you’ll be réally sick...

Slavery is terrible. These folks are from Sierra-Leon that means that their posterity got to be born here. Imagine what it would be like being born in Sierra-Leon in this day and age. I thank my ancestors everyday for enduring hardship so that I don't have to.
Slavery not good, it's terrible! These folks are from Sierra-Leon, it's lucky their posterity got to be born in the U.S., imagine being born in Sierra-Leon today with what's going on in that part of the world. I thank my ancestors everyday for enduring hardship so that I, now, don't have to.
A "cargo"! Imagine your entire race being referred to like you're non living farm equipment! How absolutely violating would that feel?!
It's sickening, really. They used words like "men", "women", "boys" - things they would call themselves, so they recognised that black people were humans as well, and still...
"which will be at the purchaser's option" how could people be so cynical and cruel?
It baffles me too. They weren't even seen as humans. I dont understand it. Animals treat their young better than we treated and STILL treat most humans.
Load More Replies...Horrific. What happened if the purchaser chose not to take the baby? I suppose he/she would stay behind and be raised by the other slaves. I don't think we can fully appreciate how this kind of treatment would affect families for generations to come. Never knowing your ancestry, families torn apart, no records to trace them again one day. No "old money" in these families whereas, if their ancestors had never been stolen out of Africa, they may well have been living prosperous lives. If so many of the intelligent, strong, healthy young people hadn't been stolen, Africa would probably be a very different place today - as would the US and other slave-owning countries.
Poor woman - and if the purchaser didnt want a 9 month old child?? what would happen to it?
Basically, "Feel free to separate the child from the mother if you wish."
Dont downvote these - they need to be seen as a sample of how men treat fellow men
Are you aware that Guinea was called Negroland? On the maps of 1747 it shows that the Kingdom of Whida, Iuda, Juda and the kingdom of Benjamin was located there and was a major slave hub. They were stealing the tribe of Judah and Benjamin. Yes the same ones mentioned in the Bible. Now they want to forget about it, but the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob hasn’t forgotten. He keeps very accurate notes and no one will escape His judgment.
The only positive (and I find it hard to use the term at all) is that they appear to be keeping families together. It is so sad to think people lived their entire lives like this, never knowing freedom, never having any real hope to.
Full hand meaning full time worker. 3-4 hand was like a small child, be it male or female.
And I was guessing. Not a bad guess understanding the horrific tragedy..
Load More Replies...Really??!! "London...50, full hand, COMPLAINS" That they would include this as part of the description- well I'd complain too you bastards if I were a slave. This is so profoundly horrifying it makes me physically ill.
Since they were sold in families, I wonder why some have lines separating them or like Jacob is crossed out. I'm guessing they split the families and maybe Jacob was bought separately or died. What a horrid way to treat living beings, I'm glad they managed to make their point and we learned and continue learning.
it breaks my heart to see how these poor people were treated..cant even imagine what they went through

17 years old oh my god 17 years old already separated from her family not allowed at school just because of her skin colour I am crying now!
Most woman did not go to school back then, regardless of race. Also, most woman from poor white families (the majority of southern America at the time) would be married by the time they where 18. Only rich woman where educated.

Load More Replies...Hmmnnn...I wonder how so many are described as "mulatress and mulatroo" - I'm afraid they may be products of master/slave rape since whites and blacks did not inter-marry at the time. So heartbreaking to see a little family listed as 5, 6 & 7.
Whatever. Those mutts think they are all that now. I'm sure the did then as well.
Load More Replies...can anyone explain why "f" is used in some places ('reafonable') instead of 's' ? i've noticed this in other posts on here as well.
It was a British style of writing widely used at the time. The first "s" in a word was often replaced by a letter looking very much like "f". (But it wasn't identical, if you look really closely, the horizontal line on the s substitute doesn't travel all the way through as it does an f.)

I heard that children as young as 4 were taken from the UK to Australia during the first and second world war. to work as slaves! They were beaten, threatened, starved and scared beyond words!
Yes, that is true, but do not forget our Aussie history also had a 'black' slave trade in Aboriginals who were forcibly taken, and done with what the owners so chose. It is not just USA which had this problem.
Load More Replies...All I can say is god help all those long gone. What a dreadful blot on the history of America and other countries who stole these people from their homes and forced them into slavery. The early Americans ( past poms) have nothing to be proud of as today there are still many who have not. The Poms (british) were the cause of all this with their blackbirding ships they did not care what they did or who they did it to. An the early Americans were more than happy to have someone else do the work while they took all the credit for making America great! NO indeed not, the slaves made America great they were the backbone of the country and that has never been addressed EVER!
I'd like to add here Elizabeth Gardner....yes of course you're right about much of that but in an earlier post you said that Americans have NOTHING to be proud of AT ALL. That's a silly thing to say of course. I'm assuming you're Australian since you're using the term "blackbirding". That's an Australian term. That means Australians ALSO did these heinous things. Need I also remind you about Australians indigenous peoples? Forced labor didn't end until the 70's in Australia so please do not throw stones. Yes it's disgusting but this is not confined to one small area. It's everywhere and that is something we cannot forget. This was a global issue and to pretend that it wasn't is minimizing it. To pretend that it was only the U.S. is to diminish the issue. Don't forget the country you came from isn't without blood on it's hands.

because western printing originated in Germany - the f and the s distinguished between between hard and soft pronunciation. the f was used in the beginning and middle of words - the s at the end. This gradually died out from the early 1800's onward
Load More Replies...One is called Hardtimes? I hope it was because he gave those slave owners a very hard time.
It was because no white man could pronounce their real names so they were “given new names” (eg: also robbed of their names).

The ad basically means this woman cannot give birth anymore, so no free slaves. Fun fact: J. I just hate this. Yes I know it is history. And there were people trying to be fair and humane, and we still have work to do , there are still people kidnapped and taken into slavery. Find a charity/ change non gov. organization ,do some research and put some money and / or effort into helping. Think about some of the original orgs. like Red Cross.
thank you Hidreley, you have opened a window to the past, it was intense.
yet in my country the majority still thinks Blackface is not even an issue
Then I think you live in the same country as I do, The Netherlands.
