Living At Aukstieji Sanciai District In City Kaunas, Made Me To Create Garment Collection About Old Habits And Still Existing Soviet Union Mindset.
My project is about Aukstieji Sanciai (higher Sanciai) district in the city of Kaunas, Lithuania. A. Sanciai is a very central district that is situated alone on the hill between forests and parks alongside the river Nemunas. Economic situation, USSR occupation for nearly fifty years in the past, government and EU financing – all together shapes the daily life of local community of forgotten district. This place is unique, because there is a feel of evolution and cultural growth as European in forgotten ex-USSR district. This project shows sarcastic and positively illustrative point of view of forgotten people. With this project my aim is to highlight masculine trends, creamy jackets mostly worn by retired people or denim jeans, which was deficit fifty years ago and of course mind-set, which has not changed from the soviet union days. With my project I tried to challenge my own creative thinking and use district symbols in a new and contemporary way using mixed media textiles, creative pattern cutting, illustrations and sculpting skills.
