I’m On A Quest To Draw Groups Of Pokémon From All 18 Types By The End Of The Year, And I’m Halfway Through
Hello! I’m Grey and I’m a mixed media illustrator who loves Pokémon! Since this February, I’ve been drawing group shots of a trainer with eleven Pokémon from each of the series’ 18 Pokémon types. This drawing challenge has been an amazing journey!
The series came about due to a situation that I feel most of us on this website can relate to… being bored at work! This past winter I was working an office job as a customer service representative in a very slow location where there were frequent periods of over 45 minutes between customers. Surfing the internet during downtime was allowed, so it was easy to look up art references and drawing ideas. I hadn’t been able to draw much outside of work, so I began using the extra time to doodle some Pokémon monsters.
One day I had an idea for a piece in which a trainer was caring for her grass-type Pokémon character by watering them. I drew a plethora of these cool Pokémon characters, trying for a variation of sizes and features to give the piece interest. I had so much fun with the concept that I continued to explore what ways a trainer could interact with their Pokémon that would be relevant to each type’s characteristics. Would a trainer of rock-type Pokémon go mountain climbing with them? That creative idea became the subject of the second piece. After doing several drawings, I noticed that each one had been unintentionally created with 11 Pokémon, and I decided to keep the number for consistency’s sake. With the trainer included, it’s a nice even dozen per piece!
I’ve had SO much fun drawing this series – though I have since left the office job and started full-time college studies, I’m still dedicating time on my weekends to continuing the famous characters' series with the goal of posting the final piece on New Year’s Eve!
