I started pouring earlier this year as a way to create new backgrounds for my paintings. During the process, I wondered how the paint would look on 3-dimensional objects.
I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do but I did know that whatever I made needed to have a playful feel. Something that people would look at and remember the fun they had as a little kid. Like hide and seek, tag, dancing, dolls, playing with action figures and toy cars.
In my head, I saw a face but thought it might look too creepy. I contemplated my usual go to of newspaper to create Papier-mâché sculptures on the canvas, but it didn’t seem like that would bring the energy needed for the pieces. A doll with a full body would be better. I needed real toys.
After pondering how I would attach the toy to the canvas, I headed to the thrift shop and began my assembling of toys to pour. I got to work planning, cleaning, priming, testing, and pouring each piece. They’re all fairly time intensive due to prep work, attachment process, and refinishing some of the frames.
Even though I got the doll, she wasn’t the first toy to get transformed. I was more excited about the animals, so the collection has started with them. This is an ongoing art series that I’ve aptly titled Playtime. Here are the first few images. Enjoy!
