The coronavirus doesn’t care who you are. It doesn’t discriminate—it targets everyone who isn’t taking the necessary precautions and isn’t being safe.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of iffy “facts” and bits of fake news floating around the internet about Covid-19. Some people wholeheartedly believe these hoaxes and even help spread them. And that can have dangerous (and sometimes even deadly) consequences.

The internet is full of stories about how the same people who claimed that the coronavirus was a hoax ended up catching the virus, got very sick, and some even lost their lives. Scroll down and have a read. Just to make it clear, dear Pandas, we don’t think that anyone “deserves” catching this horrible disease. Read on for Bored Panda’s interview with Dr. Claudia Pastides from Babylon Health about why so many people believe conspiracy theories about the coronavirus and why this is dangerous.

One person who thought that the coronavirus was fake changed their tune after they got sick

According to the Johns Hopkins University coronavirus map, there are over 2.49 million confirmed cases of infected around the globe, at the time of writing. The illness has claimed the lives of more than 171k people and the virus continues to spread, even though some countries are already relaxing lockdown measures.

Despite these numbers, some people still believe numerous hoaxes and dangerous pieces of misinformation. According to the BBC, even educated people can fall prey to coronavirus myths. This has a lot to do with information overload making it very difficult to fact-check every bit of news that we’re bombarded with each day. Another thing to consider is that some people are naturally better at overriding their reflexive reactions to information. That means that some people are better at resisting fake news than others.

Here’s what she posted about the coronavirus before getting sick

“Because the coronavirus is entirely new, there is currently a certain lack of substantial and verified research and evidence to explain why the virus operates as it does. As a result, it is easy to fill this void with untruths about the virus’s effects and the prevention of its symptoms,” Dr. Pastides explained to Bored Panda.

“As people are desperate for more knowledge and information about the virus, they are more prone to believe these misconceptions. It is instinctive in humans to seek solutions to problems, and when there is a crisis, such as this pandemic, they might be willing to believe anything they hear without verifying it first.”

Another person who thought that the coronavirus was a hoax died while receiving treatment for the virus

However, what’s the best way to check if a piece of information is correct? Especially considering the amount of information we’re exposed to every single day.

“The World Health Organization has a dedicated coronavirus myth-busting page on their website, where they sum up the majority of the misconceptions flourishing on the internet at the minute. This is a great place to start to verify whether what you’ve heard is correct,” the doctor pointed out.

“Babylon Health also has a dedicated coronavirus page, which they update daily with information about the virus. This is another trustworthy site to verify information and you can access it here.”

She added: “A third option is to contact a medical professional, who will be able to tell you quickly if the theories you’ve heard are false or not. Do not call the emergency service unless you have Covid-19 symptoms, as they are already overwhelmed, but Babylon Health has medical professionals available to answer questions through their online app. They have a dedicated Covid-19 Care Assistant as part of their app, which also includes a symptom checker.”

According to Dr. Pastides, checking trusted news websites can also help determine whether something is true or false. She recommends reading the BBC or CNN.

“Not only will believing in coronavirus hoaxes not prevent you from catching the virus or cure you of it if you do catch it, but it could potentially be more harmful to your body. Gargling bleach, for instance, can be very damaging to your organs, or taking a scalding hot bath can severely hurt your skin. In turn, this could put more and unnecessary pressure on an already overwhelmed health service,” the health professional warned.

Pastor Spradlin who decried coronavirus “mass hysteria” died after attending Mardi Gras

Pastor Landon Spradlin, who was 66 years old, shared a misleading post on Facebook that compared swine flu and coronavirus deaths and suggested that the Covid-19 “hysteria” was politically motivated to harm President Donald Trump.

However, the pastor’s son Landon Isaac noted that his father didn’t think that the actual virus was a hoax; he thought it was real but believed it was blown out of proportion.

Spradlin died 8 days after being in intensive care when doctors discovered he had double pneumonia (in both of his lungs) and also tested positive for Covid-19. Earlier, he had visited New Orleans for Mardi Gras and it’s likely that he caught the coronavirus there.

Here’s the pastor and his wife

Dr. Pastides debunked 6 common myths about the coronavirus that are flourishing online. According to her, the coronavirus isn’t manmade but originated in animals. What’s more, the doctor pointed out that hand sanitizers that contain at least 60 percent alcohol will kill the coronavirus, despite some hoaxers stating otherwise.

There’s also no evidence that the coronavirus can be spread by your pets. Dr. Pastides also pointed out that hot baths or hot drinks won’t kill the virus because it’s inside the cells of your body. But if you’ve come into contact with the virus and it’s on your skin, wash it off with soap and warm water or use hand sanitizer.

There’s also a very dangerous myth out there that gargling bleach can stop the spread of the coronavirus. This is wrong and you should not do this. Ever. Gargling bleach can lead to internal burns and land you in the hospital.

Much the same way, garlic isn’t a cure-all for the coronavirus. Dr. Pastides explains that eating a healthy and balanced diet is important, but there’s nothing to suggest that garlic can prevent you from catching the virus.

I can't wish people dead, but I'm also struggling to find my normal compassion for people who risk their lives and everybody else's at the same time, and then die from the thing they refuse to acknowledge as real.

I understand people not wanting to live in fear and wanting to get back to their normal lives. But the measures were put in place to save lives not to ruin them, dead people cant run business or care for their loved ones. And as much as there is a need to take politics out of these, lets be honest had the politicians who had knowledge of this had acted early on a lot of deaths could of possibly been avoided. Seeing all the protest is really a slap in the face to those on the front line risking their lives to save ours. I hope everyone stays safe.

I 1000% agree with you that all of these protests are just like a massive gut punch to those who have been working so hard to take care of people. If going to restaurants and hanging out with their friends is this important to these people, it's easy to see what human life is worth to them.

First things first are these true. If so they are powerful reminders that 1. The COVID-19 is as easy or easier to contract than the flu or the common cold. 2. It is far deadlier than the flu. 3. If we do not keep quarantine and social distancing measures in place the death toll will skyrocket! There is no political agenda.

Problem is, these deniers aren't just affecting their own lives, they are spreading the disease to people. It's akin to a drunk driver getting on the road when 3 sheets to the wind.

I want to say they're getting their just deserts, but each one of them probably infected at least five other (presumably innocent) people, who went on to infect five more, etc, leading to a long and unnecessary chain of illness and death. Like, if drunk drivers only put THEMSELVES at risk and never killed/maimed other people, I'd be like, "serves you right, idiot".

It saddens me that there are people who think the Covid 19 is just a hoax, just tell that to the families who have lost loved ones to this virus of which scientists know very little about. SO far, over 17,000 have died in the UK and over 42,000 in the USA, over 18,000 in New York alone.

Something like a Hollywood movie where people turn yellow and green by the dozens, cough up some blood and fall down dead. And than a man in scrubs passes by and yells: "Oh, Golly Gee It's Corona. We have a pandemic." Something like that, I think.

Has anyone seen the pictures floating around of the Trump supporters/lockdown protesters in Michigan with actual assault rifles in their hands? Those who should go aren't very affected by this virus and wouldn't have been affected by selection either, since they were making the rules. Some even say they released it. These deaths are a simple and pale act of justice compared to the much more numerous cases where the infection was intended. It's good on one hand that it wasn't much worse, but that's only the second level - at the first one, the things were arranged as the evil wanted - even without the virus!!!

I'm so glad that Pastor Spradlin was included because he was the most callous stupid of all of them. He attended the Mardi Gras travelling over 900 miles there and Travelled back despite having the virus then. For a man of 'God' he certainly was beyond callous, the deaths of many on his (lack of) conscious, plus severe illness spread all around by his behaviour in a country where health care is not free. I'm not Christian but I Really want for him to be refused to enter the pearly gates and sent to hell instead for deliberately infecting so many. His family claimed to have no evidence or reason to believe covid19 was so bad.... The WORLD is in Pandemic, and the scientific data is there, along with the none scientific data, but I think the Death rate was a bloody clue 😤😤😤

I understand what you are trying to achieve, but I doubt if the message would be less strong if you would have greyed out names or blurred faces. Everybody deserves a little respect for his or her privacy. Families are grieving, and these people were loved in spite of what they stated. Someone convinced these people that they were right. So blame these people - Fox News, Alex Jones, your own president - for feeding these people wrong, dishonest and in these cases even deadly "information." I guess everyone knows at least a friend or family member that also propagates these kind of statements. And we might hate them for what they are saying, pity them even for their stupidity - but they are still family or friend because of their other many, many qualities. We own them some common decency - otherwise we are just as bad as the other side.

I think in the case of the Pastor - he is a public figure, and publicized his beliefs. So no right to privacy. In the case of the Sehlke family, they are publicizing their family member's death in order to get money via Go Fund Me - so graying out their names would turn off the money. As for the first person (not sure their name), they were tweeting their opinions. That makes it public. I think once you make yourself a public figure, you no longer have an expectation of privacy? I believe that is how the law works, and how the families whose children died in the Newtown school shootings can be continually harassed by Alex Jones - because they are "public" figures, advocating for gun control. Anyone on here have more expertise on this??

hmmm this wasn't a wise choice for a story. It seems ghoulish and freakishly like you were cheering for their deaths. Any person has the right to free speech, many MANY people traveled to Mardi Gras and other places as those things took place in Jan and Feb, and you look like you think you are a god or something. Karma tells us all not to make fun or wish ill on others or it comes back to you in spades. So I guess if bad choices continue in the stories selected, we shall be able to look forward to your demise? I really dont wish you well, I really wish you would convert this energy into something more productive than making fun of others after they have died. Learn better, do better.

So true. These people don't trust the media, or their government...like many, many other people. And who can blame them for that? I don't understand how the distrust makes them swing so far right or chose Trump as their hero, and I never will...but they hardly deserve to die and have their deaths marked with glee and goading. I'm scundered for the people who are happy to see this news, how can they act like they have a moral high ground when being so callous? It's sickening. If you want to change the minds of ignorant people maybe don't wish them death then wonder why they don't share your point of view.

How sad we live in a time with ignorant blockheads. Things are just getting worse especially with the protests against quarantine adding to the fuel. What makes it terrible is that in these protests, they are blocking nurses from going into the hospitals to treat patients. What will end up happening is the patients in the hospitals will die, all these dumb protesters will get sick and flood the hospitals, some of them will get treated because the previous patients died (i wish not for these mf to be saved..), a lot of people will suffer in the coming weeks and then it'll be a rinse and repeat with new ignorant people trying to blame something. Government can't even do anything about it cause they don't want to make things worse by angering the people. Health workers are risking their lives everyday but these people sitting at home crying because they can't watch sports or get a haircut are "victims" and should be entitled to their every right to run around and spread a virus. Sigh..

These people were warned not to go out or expose them and look what has happened. This is a tragedy, but hopefully a good learning experience for others who are thinking like them. The COVID19 is a very real and serious thing and instead of arguing that it is a hoax and that we should have the right to do what we want, think of the people who are putting their lives on the line every single day to get people over this illness. Health professionals know a lot more about illnesses than politicians. It's really quite simple:Just stay home and stay safe.

When this all first started my sister was one to call this a hoax. I told her in the nicest, sisterly way that it was to be taken seriously. The following weekend she saw her best friend, who she had physical contact. She later found out the babysitter who watched her best friend's children got COVID-19. My sister started feeling sick and freaked out. Luckily she didn't end up getting it but it was a big wake up call for her!

Ignorant people blow my mind.. this might sound harsh but I strongly feel that if you want to "live your life" "be free" and not take this thing seriously for yourself and others, then do so, get the virus, get sick or die and be gone so that the rest of us who are actually protecting ourselves can get back to our lives and our jobs. I don't have any compassion for these people that ended up getting it.. good riddens, less ignorant people in the world. If this was such a "hoax" or a "joke" companies worldwide wouldn't stop running and millions of people wouldn't have lost their jobs in one day. That's just my opinion, hate it or don't.. positive vibes to everyone staying inside, thank you.

I think that ship has sailed. I think that if there were a god who wanted to punish this human pustule, he set in motion a perfect storm that laid bare his racism, elitism, incompetence and self aggrandizing (all of which are indeed, sins of the 10 commandment variety) along with destroying the only rationale (the economy) for his re-election in such a way that recovery before the election will be impossible. Mysterious ways indeed. Of course, God can't do s**t without sacrificing a few thousand innocents but that's the nature of divine intervention. Gotta have those pillars of salt.

To all those pearl cluthing, hand-wringing 'where is your compassion??' bleeding hearts comments here - I suspect that every single one of us here is full of compassion for our fellow humans. HOWEVER....that compassion, as well as sympathy....goes out the window when we are discussing pond scum such as this individual who clearly gave zero f***s about her fellow humans. Forgive me but I find it impossible to scrape together one iota of compassion for such selfish, ignorant and stupid individuals. They don't deserve compassion. How much compassion do you think they would have for all the innocent people they could have infected by their careless behaviour? There is an element of society which carries the 'screw you - I'll do whatever I want and to hell with the consequences' attitude. And those individuals deserve what comes back to them. I'm trying to feel sorry for their families but you know what? ....I see the entire family behaving in exactly the same way. So no - f**k all compassion.

Why would the Sehlke family use GoFundMe? If that woman was SO smart, why didn't she have an insurance policy to take care of her family? The survivors weren't even shy about taking precautions after her death. That seems like they had no respect for her opinions.

I am really sorry that these people died (I hope the first person is still alive and, hopefully, not with severe symptoms). In other circumstances I like the idea of karma and justice, but not when it takes lives. Apart from that, there are protests against the quarantine in Europe as well and many people who do not believe in COVID. I am wondering if it’s just a pure coincidence that most of them consider themselves patriots. Sadly, democracy and patriotism got widely misunderstood over the time and this is the reason why there are so many inconsiderate people. On top of that, in the US, most of these people really seems to be Trump voters...As an European I am both surprised and not that this is true...At some point I was thinking that all jokes about his electorate are exaggerated.

Tabitha L

But as long as there is a "leader" telling people to listen to him as he makes up his own lies as facts & shuts down the experts, there are people that worship him & will do & repeat whatever he says. Until he is shut down by the experts & Congress this mess will continue.

This is the only thing I like about viruses, they kill all the bad idiots (it’s very sad when they kill the good people though)

I said on Facebook about 3 weeks ago that if the Orange one said that chlorine killed the virus that there would be a shortage of Clorox and a load of dead dummies! Now people are actually gargling with it??? Lord help us. Maybe tell them that carbolic acid kills the virus and watch idiots bathe in it... well, for a few seconds maybe.

This silly cow Karen writes a lot of dumb and false things about Covid, then she dies of it, and her relatives create a GoFundMe... Some nerve! They wouldn't get a penny from me, my money would be better spent helping sensible people who protect themselves and quarantine.

On top of that, in the US, most of these people really seems to be Trump voters...As an European I am both surprised and not that this is true...At some point I was thinking that all jokes about his electorate are exaggerated.

what a stupid article - surely Covid-19 is a fake-story - we face a normal flu and there are not more people dying than normally - what a huge hoax - just open your mind for the way propaganda works - Corona is about a lot of money and a reflection of deep ignorance - do not like such stories in bored pandy - they are part of the big division media are trying to put upon the population - the writer of the article is one of the many victims we have to face which is a nuisance in itself.

It's not just them dying. There is a chance that they spread it to family members. Also this means that there are widowed spouses and parentless children. Let's have compassion for them.

Now we know they won't go where the sheep go, rather where their soul trading beliefs will send them. Rebel without a cause was just another product of the revolution, the real american ideology, and its filming set made more victims than the horror movies, because this is the true horror - the chaotic evil.

That is how this should be done. Suggest isolation. Don't want to do it? then if your immune system can't cut it, you die. Simple. Oh, "but life must be saved at any cost". Darwin, lol

Internet use does not get much worse than this! These people were lead to believe false info and paid with their lives for it. They have family. They have children, parents, siblings, and friends. It is NOT OK to behave like gluttons, celebrating their demise!

Since when did BoredPanda become so unbelievably cruel? I used to enjoy coming here for funny articles and artwork, now it seems every other post is about calling people out for being uneducated, or right wing, or for bad parenting. Yes these people were misinformed, but you can tell they aren't that intelligent just from the spelling. And can you really blame them with all the lies that are peddled these days? Where's the f*****g compassion?

This site is not all about entertainment. It's articles posted by real people on real issues. Sometimes articles like this get posted as a kind of public service announcement. If you are looking for funny and humorous perhaps try the comedy network.
