A big part of it was Wilder's willingness, even eagerness, to actually mess with the other actors. In his introductory scene, none of the kids were had ever met him before, nor were they told anything about what to expect. So the horrified looks on their faces when he fell were genuine, because they honestly, truly, thought he had fallen over. All done at Wilder's specific request.

The original was best. Not only because Wilder's performance was so captivating, but the story and visuals were far better. Burton's version was strange and eerie, lacking all the comedy and soul of the book, Depp's portrayal of Wonka was awkward and forced, whole movie felt like Burton having a therapy session for his angst with his own father. That movie was when I knew Burton had lost his touch.

My little cousins had only seen the remake. One day I babysat and brought the ORIGINAL. They wanted to know what movie I brought. I told them, only to be informed that they'd seen it and didn't like it. I told them this was a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT movie and to trust me. They LOVED it.

Oooh yes! I like Depp, but not for this role. Gene Wilder's character was more like a regular person that was eccentric & unpredictable, while Depp was like...I'm sorry, I probably won't explain this well, but he felt like he was playing a caricature of someone who was eccentric & unpredictable. It felt "real"-ish in the Wilder version vs 100% fantasy in the Depp version. That probably didn't make sense, but that's the best I can describe it.

Both the original W***y Wonka and then Wizard of Oz were shown one Christmas on TV as a child... I was left traumatised!!! Flying monkeys and having horrific things happen to you if you eat to many sweeties??? 😭😭😭 ... I'm surprised I'm a somewhat relatively 'normal' person after that!!! 😄

I agree. I grew up with that show and I LOVED it. My own home life being what it was, I adored the Huxtables. They were firm but caring parents. I used to wish so much that they were my parents. It really sucked when the things came out about Cosby. Not only did my own dad let me down, but so did my fictional dad. I was also a fan of Little Bill, another show about family that highlights good parenting. It's hard to fathom Cosby can be behind such wholesome content, being who he is. But I'd still recommend both shows.

The original play was French (La Cage aux Folles), I saw it in the 70s with the original actors, Jean Poiret (who wrote the play) and Michel Serrault. To me, they're indissociable from those roles, though I would love to see Robin Williams in the rôle of Albin. Just like Michel Serrault, he was mad enough to carry it.

Maggie Smith as Minerva McGonagall. I don't have a very detailed imaginatione when it comes to visualizing characters, but that one was 12/10! And if they had ever managed to make a Discworld movie with a witches plot she would have been my one and only Granny Weatherwax! With the penchant of just remaking old movies, Clint Eastwood was the definitive Harry Callahan in the Dirty Harry movies, and The Man with No Name in the Sergio Leone films. Also as William Munny in Unforgiven, and Josey Wales. Those parts were all him, and he was all those parts and more.

I agree. I grew up with that show and I LOVED it. My own home life being what it was, I adored the Huxtables. They were firm but caring parents. I used to wish so much that they were my parents. It really sucked when the things came out about Cosby. Not only did my own dad let me down, but so did my fictional dad. I was also a fan of Little Bill, another show about family that highlights good parenting. It's hard to fathom Cosby can be behind such wholesome content, being who he is. But I'd still recommend both shows.

The original play was French (La Cage aux Folles), I saw it in the 70s with the original actors, Jean Poiret (who wrote the play) and Michel Serrault. To me, they're indissociable from those roles, though I would love to see Robin Williams in the rôle of Albin. Just like Michel Serrault, he was mad enough to carry it.

And if they had ever managed to make a Discworld movie with a witches plot she would have been my one and only Granny Weatherwax!
