I remember it too. I was in the gym where it was on tv... took me a few seconds to realise it wasn't a movie (I live in Belgium, Europe)

I was at School at the time. I think we did not get around to much learning.... it really was a shock all over the world. (Germany for me)

I remember specifically it was the first day of the school season in my country! I came back early of course and the first tower had already collapsed! My parents were shocked when i came in and had no idea what had happened until i saw the shocking moment on tv!

Lord, me too. Ninth grade, I hear my mom in the living room (west coast time zone) say "what the..." "OH MY GOD!!!"

It was late evening in Australia, and I was up feeding my newborn at the time. I just remember sinking back into the chair after the second hit, and thinking, "This is no accident, this is an act of war. What kind of world have a just brought life into?". Dramatic? Probably, but it was my first child. I was a solo parent, and I had no idea what our future would be. I just knew that if the US went to war, Australia would follow.

This year marks 20 years. There are a lot of twenty-somethings and younger who have no clue.

I wasn’t alive then, I live in the UK but my mom was born and raised in the US so I have American family and I always hear them talking about it

I was living in Spain, just coming out of the shower when my husband told me what happened, I thought he was kidding. It was surreal when we put on the news.

I remember. I was on a train, going to work from Brooklyn to Manhattan. The train stopped when the first tower fell as no one knew what was happening and did not know if it was safe to go into the tunnel. Police officer told everyone on the train to "go home and stay home" but instead my husband and I walked over to the East River and saw lower Manhattan engulfed in smoke and people walking over Brooklyn bridge, all covered in ash.

Really? That was your take-away from that scene? Many Americans at that time had cable access to CNN, BBC, and other sources of world news. THAT event in the US that day changed everything for them, for you, for countries all around the world! I am shocked that you didn’t get that....what did you want them to do that day? Rush off to see the changing of the Guard, again?

Another opportunity to post a negative reaction about the US. Consider the population and size of the United States compared to other nations, except China and India. The US has approximately 331 million people in 50 states. All those states have their own government, in addition to the Federal government. The UK has about 67 million, Italy 61 million. Try to do the math. The US is also known as "the melting pot" because dating back to the 1600s, immigrants have been settling here. It is truly a splendid part of this country, but it can create dissension and a great deal of news. Huge population, vast number of news stories. And by the way, we do learn of international events on national news shows, not local news.

I was younger than that and it is still burnt into my memory. It was a terrible, heart wrenching day. I remember I was in fifth grade, my teachers name, how he reacted everything.

American here. I was at work too. One of my vendors came in and asked, "Did you see where those planes hit the twin towers?!". I remember saying, "Planes? As in, more than ONE?!". I knew then it was intentional, but in my mind I was picturing those small, single engine Cessna-type planes, not commercial aircrafts. I got the shock of my life when I turned on the news.

Because some pictures are either too intense in color, or color would be distracting... A picture in b/w makes you focus on what's important.

Back then, there is a slight chance that the photographer was shooting with a film camera and they were using black and white film. Digital cameras were still pretty expensive in 2001, especially high-quality ones.

There are MANY reasons to use B&W instead of color. Dramatic effect, for one. Artistic impression/ expression for another (reason). Maybe the photographer was experimenting with B&W film at the time. The list goes on...

The majority of American newspapers, if not all, were printed in black and white during the time of MLK.

You'll be one of the few alive at the time but have no memory of the event. :)

For the next two weeks.Ticket agents were calling in needing help. From time to time an agent from NYC would call in. Sometimes they had to put us on hold. The hold music was different it was a radio station giving out information on where people could find their loved ones who died on 9/11. The people who tragically lost their lives were waiting to be claimed in massive buildings at the ports. Here back home, just like ecerywy else on America. Everyone was nice to one another. Helping one another, trying to find ways to raise money or collect anything for those who lost their loved ones. My brother's birthday is on 9/11. He didn't celebrate his birthday for the next ten years.
