It Took Me Two Months To Complete This Detailed Edinburgh Cityscape

My name is Carl Lavia, I go by the nickname ‘Sketch’ and together with my creative partner photographer Lorna Le Bredonchel, we are attempting an epic project – Sketching large-scale every single city within the UK. Yes, all 69!

I have just completed the city of Edinburgh and it’s displayed at the Edinburgh Central Library. I use a mix of technical and BIC pens on archival paper. The Edinburgh cityscape took 2 months to create, but each city is unique.

I once tried drawing a plane view of Blackwood (Wales). Small scale and much simplified. And it still took me a good while, and it was not easy. What I'm saying is, I know from experience that what this man's doing is amazing. Congratulations! *clap clap*

Wow! I live in Edinburgh (though it doesn't look like your sketch extends down quite as far as my actual house). Do you know how long it will be on display at the Library for? I'd love to go see it.

wow! Fantastic! It's hard to draw something like that. The details are all good. You are one of the few people with exceptional talent.

It is amazing from afar, but even more stunning close up! Has architectural style lines, the streets look alive with movement, and the varied value keeps the eye moving around. Amazing. The pictures too- wonderful depth :)

Gosh I wish I could afford to travel to the UK just to see this. Maybe Sketch could come here and do one of San Antonio TX.

This is fantastic, I love how the closeup has that beautiful personal touch of loose sketching. I'm curious, do you take photos and stitch them and project a basic outline on the paper, or what's the process?

The process is simple, just light pen touches on paper, no tracing lines etc, just pen straight to paper. A lot of research goes into where things are placed, for instance: google maps/areal viewpoints online/books etc...lots of mistakes are made, sometimes too many and a huge section, an entire panel gets trashed, but all in all, things are kept a lil scruffy and free-flowing and sketchy and that's what has worked.
