30 Doctors Share The Stupidest Thing They’ve Heard From People Who ‘Read It On The Internet’
From daily news to what our friends have been up to, from celebrity gossip to recipes to make for dinner, virtually anything can be learned on the internet.
Sometimes, however, we forget to take things with a pinch of salt and remind ourselves that not every piece of information that lives in the virtual world is legit and reliable.
Ask yourself what was the last time you googled some random symptoms only to find out you may have a very rare illness, and that time is ticking and so is your heartbeat, sending you into panic mode. Now think of all the doctors who hear these things retold by heart by their patients, and imagine the hilarity of it.
When someone asked doctors to share their ‘dumbest ‘I read on the internet…’ moment they had with a patient’ on Ask Reddit, it was destined to become an entertaining read. Read on below for the most eye roll-inducing stories!

I’m not a doctor, but I did take my very elderly Nana to the hospital after I showed up to her house and found her slurring her words and behaving very strange overall. Now, my Nana is a major hypochondriac and when she was admitted the first thing she told the doctor is that she believed she was experiencing the beginning signs of Parkinson’s.
It turned out that she had mixed up a bottle of non-alcoholic wine with a bottle of regular wine, had drank the entire bottle, and was completely hammered.
This was quite innocent and cute. I never drink alkohol and once had a glass of Ouzo thinking it was non alkoholic. It looked like milk so gulped half a glass and the whole room heaved after a while.
Milk? That can't have been Ouzo. Ouzo is clear, like water.
Load More Replies...My husband works for UPS and one of his coworkers went to an address and the elderly lady was on the floor unconscious with the door standing open. He went in, checked her vitals, called 911 and waited with her. When EMS arrived, they sniffed her breath, started laughing and said "Vodka"... she was just passed out drunk. They thought my husband's coworker needed EMS more than she did because he was freaking out so bad!
Hahaha, hilarious. Very nice of your husband to care so much for others.

A friend/Pharmacist told me a story about a 17 yo female patient who came in with her boyfriend to pick up birth control for the first time. They got a 28 day supply and had no questions, but returned 2 weeks later saying THEY ran out. The girl said she read on Facebook that if you both take the pill once a day it's twice as effective because it gets into the guys semen. My friend said it was a long conversation explaining why that doesn't make sense..We need better Sex Ed in the US lol
They’d have been better off using condoms if that was their goal. In many instances it’s not safe to take medication prescribed to someone else. There was no reason for them to believe the doctor meant for both of them to take it but prescribed it only to the girlfriend. It’s incredibly ignorant and arrogant for teens to think they have a better understanding of medication prescribed to them than the doctor does.
Load More Replies...In my experience most teachers in schools would be happy to teach a comprehensive curriculum of Sex Ed. The problems are caused by parents ("I don't want my baby learning that filth, I'll tell her when she needs to know"), politicians (who control what goes in the curriculum and get scared by protests from parents and religious leaders) and religious leaders (who lie to parents about what is going to be taught and stir up trouble).
If it gets any more explicit here, then my children will get to see a live demonstration. We practiced putting condoms on bananas, how to use tampons, what different kinds of contraceptives there are, what goes where etc etc etc. can't get much more detailed.
Load More Replies...This is like one of the funny patient House used to get on the show 'House' where a patient came in saying her nebulizer was clearly not working. So House asked her to show him how she used it and she was spraying it on her neck like perfume. There were always some *chef's kiss* patients on that show. PDQiCt-632...54d174.gif
No, by far the best was the one who argued that she COULDN'T be pregnant because she used "the jelly". Instead of a spermicidal jelly, she pulls out a jar of strawberry jam to show House. 😂 lol
Load More Replies...Very odd. Why didn't the doctor who wrote the prescription and/or the pharmacist make sure they knew what to do?
Probably did. But then she went on the internet....
Load More Replies...We definitely do. Just teaching abstinence is not enough. Kids to know everything about sexual education.
In my country the popular emergency pill used to have 2 tiny pills. The second had to be taken 12 hours after the first. Following this pattern made it effective. A newbie couple friend was too shy to buy it themselves so another friend picked it up for them and handed it to the girl when we were all chilling. She popped one of them and to our horror her boyfriend took the other. The pack had a 5-6 page leaflet that had all the details about the pill mentioned. They still did that. We were on the floor in tears.
I think that part of the problem is that its called "Sex Ed." It makes some goofy parents think, "I don't want some stranger teaching my kid how to have sex." They should call it "Reproductive Education," because that's what it really is. I remember Sex Ed. They didn't teach us anything about having sex at all; other than "Here's the parts of the anatomy. Tab A goes in Slot B, and 40 weeks later you have a baby."
Wait so if they both took it and ran out in 14 days, were they taking the pills everyday, and by extension, having sex everyday for 2 weeks? (Genuinely curious because I am not entirely sure if you need to take birth control pills everyday for them to work)
You need to take your birth control pills every day and do not miss one day. You also are not supposed to have sexual intercourse until you start your second set of birth control pills. Make sure the guy wears a new condom properly on his penis every time you have sexual intercourse. Birth control pills and condoms are not 100 percent effective. There is a chance of getting pregnant every time you have sexual intercourse. Birth control pills and condoms only lower the chance of getting pregnant. They will never keep you from getting pregnant. Many people have gotten pregnant while using birth control pills and condoms.

You'd be amazed at how many people tell me (type 1 diabetic) that I could could get out from big pharma and my dependency on insulin if I just eat right...
I'm skinny and otherwise healthy. Type 1 is autoimmune disorder that must always take insulin due to the pancreas no longer creating any on its own...
These conversations are often met with a blank stare by me.
Since insulin is a life giving medication it should be free I don't understand why in the US do you still have to pay for it
Recently, the House passed a bill to cap the price of insulin at $35, but only for Medicare users. So it's something, but still not nearly enough. Notably, it was passed with a unanimous vote from the Democrats, while 193 house Republicans voting AGAINST it.

God bless him, but my uncle was certain I would "Grow out of it". Type-1 diabetes. Nope 35 years later and it's still my constant companion.
I weighed 130lbs and walked 4miles a day, I couldn't afford to eat more than once-a-day when diagnosed with T2. All these people commenting are forgetting that genetics and meds that cause metabolic changes (such as psychotropics) can cause T2. My Navajo background screwed me.
People who say all of this stuff about "Big Pharma" need a gut punch.
It takes as little as a google search, a good dive into online forums, or a single click on a website, and you’re on the way to self-diagnosing yourself with an illness you don’t have and going into panic mode. And although we all know how pointless and even dangerous getting our medical information online can be, it’s still very tempting to find out what’s wrong with us and how to help it.
So to find out more about why we should never get our medical information from the internet, Bored Panda spoke with Daniel Markuson, the cybersecurity expert at NordVPN. Markuson was happy to share very useful insights with our readers.
My dad is an ER doc. One of my favourite recent stories of his of the teen girl with blue legs.
Teen girl and her mom had been waiting at the ER for 6 hours when he came on shift. He read the chart before he came into the room that she had blue legs and was otherwise normal. When he looked at her he didn’t see blue around her mouth etc that would indicate lack of oxygen and her levels were normal. Just bright blue legs.
He goes over to her with an alcohol swab and wipes some of the blue off her leg. Then asks her if she just bought new jeans.
Mom and daughter look at each other and burst out laughing - realizing they waited 6 hours in the ER for nothing. He said they had a good sense of humour about it and could see how ridiculous it all was.
Nice funny story that balances out all the c**p and sad stuff he’s seen over the years.
Edit: typo
My mother taught me to always wash new clothes before wearing them for the first time since there might be all sorts of chemicals in the cloth, which might cause rashes or other effects on your skin.
It always freaks me out when people DO NOT wash new clothing. Though with some indigo jeans even 10 washes the blue rubs off on leg, shoes, nice new white shirt... >_<
Load More Replies...Seriously. I was thinking the same thing, but then I also live in the US. This story would only be funny in another country.
Load More Replies...I always wash clothes before first use. I know people in retail and they often say I don't want to know where the clothes have been
I used to work in retail and did fitting room duty. People try on clothes when they're sweaty, sick, you name it. Wash everything!!
Load More Replies...A Paramedic friend of mine told me about a callout they had where a woman 'Woke up paralysed from the waist down'. Long story short, her knickers were far, far, far too tight and cut off her circulation.
i wanna know how she got them on if they were that tight!
Load More Replies...This happened to me - didn't go to hospital but was sitting in the tub and saw my blue legs. I anxiously called to my partner who is a doc and asked him if I was ok. He just laughed at me.
A trick I was told about that helps set colour into fabrics that bleed whenever washed was to soak it in salt water.
Not a doctor but someone told me I should drink bleach to cure diabetes. Ok yeah it would cure me because a corpse can’t have diabetes can it?
PLEASE DONT DO THAT. My friend attempted to commit su1c1de with it and it did not turn out well for her. I thank god that she is still alive. :(
Would you like to tell us what happened to her? Is she all right?
Load More Replies...A similar thing was started with people believing that drinking bleach “cures” autism as well. Does not work and can lead to death. MMS (miracle mineral supplement) is very bad.
I’m a special needs mom. I’ve seen parents believe in that “autism cure” and give their kids an autism bath in bleach. So sad. Luckily their kids lived (although got burned by the bleach.)
Load More Replies...I will never understand how people can believe these crazy "cures" especially enough to try them or force down their child's throat. What's even more insane is when you have a person in power, who people assume is smart and wise because they are wealthy and well known, spreading false information and questioning a Dr about injecting bleach to flush out disease. Those who believe in this line of thought shouldn't be able to vote either.
Not the 1st time i hear Bleach can cure some illnesses lol, apparently Bleach is also a superb anti-viral lololol......
It is a superb anti-viral. It kills everything it touches. That's why you use bleach to disinfect hard surfaces. Back home, we would use it to disinfect areas that had been contaminated with rat urine. But we wouldn't put it on people, and definitely not IN people.

As a general surgery resident on the colorectal surgery service, we do a lot of hemorrhoids, a**l fissures, etc. One of my colleagues prescribed a cream for a middle-aged woman and she later called back and asked if the cream would still work while she was on vacation in Hawaii. Uh, yes it will, why? She replied, “Bc I was told to apply it locally.”
Oh, did you forget to give her international version?! At lease one with roaming function, ffs!
Have you seen those roaming charges! Big pharma extortion rackets! And don't get me started on the 5G creams!
Load More Replies...To be fair to this woman "apply it locally" is not common. It's something you only hear from a doctor, and if you've not heard it before it probably wouldn't make much sense. Something like "put it to the painful area" is clearer.
I was also going to say that. My additional comment is that she might not have had to use a cream (or any other medication) before this. I've met lots of people who are (in my opinion lucky) not to have experienced any medical issues in their lives.
Load More Replies...A**s. Edit: nice. Add ānus to the list of basic body parts that are censored on BP.
As a NURSE, and you'd be surprised at how many medications we can't take, because of our PROFESSION!
“My main advice is to avoid getting medical information from the internet. It can be misleading,” Markuson warned. The cybersecurity expert continued: “You could google ‘Why does my back hurt?’ and find results that would suggest you have cancer or some other serious disease when in reality your problem is bad posture.”
Moreover, from the digital privacy perspective, that could also be dangerous, especially if you research the condition you have, Markuson argues.
My father saw a patient who was convinced that hospitals were a sham. She had cancer. She winds up on chemo for a bit but very quickly tells my father she isn't going to be taking her medication anymore because "she knows when she's being scammed" and the side effects of her medication were "proof". Apparently, the chemo my father was prescribing was a ploy by Big Pharma. Apparently, that was what was actually causing the "cancer" in the first place.
Well, she decides to go off her medication for a bit and starts feeling better as no chemo = no side effects from chemo. She takes this as further proof that hospitals are a sham and starts blogging about it. Posting online about how she's living proof that hospitals are fraudulent and telling people to stop buying Big Pharma's lies.
She was then sent back to my father, via ambulance, sometime later. The test results were back and, surprise surprise, stage four cancer. She died in the hospital later that week.
Internet lies have killed more people than any war. But how can you stop ignorance ?
This woman could be my MIL. The only difference is she died home when I was pregnant with her first grand child. We all tried to convince her take her meds but she just brushed it off every time. She had a healthy life, the cancer could only be a "faux positif". We even used our child to be and the fact she had been waiting for him for years but wouldn't e able to meet him. Nothing worked. I think she actes like that not by ignorance but by fear. If the cancer wasn't real, she wasn't going to die. Sad thing is, taken early stage, this cancer had more than 80% chance of being cured.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Sad thing too is that any of her anti-vaxx friends will probably attribute her death to something else, since it doesn't fit their narrative.

I am not in the medical field, but during my time as a student with acquaintances in the medical field, two stories marked me:
A woman kept getting pregnant within months of delivering the last baby, so her physician told her to take the pill. She comes back pregnant. The physician asks “But didn’t you take the pills?”
“Yes I added them to the food before serving the whole family”…
Another one was a woman who came with a baby suffering from a weird skin condition on this buttocks. After leaving no stone unturned the clueless intern asks her to show how she takes care of the baby. Let’s start by changing diapers. That’s when the mother asks for a glass of water, to pour it in the diaper like they show on TV ads, before fitting the diaper on the baby…
At my delivery ward a midwife explicity said it was impossible to get pregnant the first 6 months if you breastfed exclusively. Can assure you that was incorrect..
How in the world can a midwife believe and tell this?! They should know better.
Load More Replies...Oh, that poor woman! Nobody educated her on how to care proper care of her baby. I find that very, very sad.
Yes, very sad and very, very dangerous. Every person who's about to be a parent for the first time should be able to get parenting classes where they teach you the basics.
Load More Replies...I once had a colleague who (now that she’s older and a lot wiser) admitted to the following story: she was born in the 1950’s, fell pregnant when she was 16 (didn’t really understand why or how she got pregnant). The baby was underweight, so her health visitor told her to double the amount she fed her (for some reason, back in those days they thought formula was better than breast milk). Next visit, the baby had lost weight instead of putting on weight. The health visitor asked my colleague to show her how she prepared the bottles, and lo and behold, in order to double the amount, she used the same amount of formula and *doubled the water* she mixed it with. She also told me that after this first child she got married, and babies just kept arriving (she had 5 children in total) but she never really quite understood where they came from back then.
This makes me sad for all girls in that time period and before.

Load More Replies...But let's go ahead and force kids to become parents by outlawing abortion 😂
Does she do that with maxi pads, too, and wonder why she's got a wicked irritation down there?
Quick question: when I gave birth (2 different hospitals), the nurses/ midwifes showed me how to do stuff like this. How to change a diaper, how to dress Baby, how to feed it.... and later at home my midwife came and showed me how to bathe them, took measurements, looked at my own body (if the uterus was behaving all right, how the scar of my c-section was etc).... Don't they do that wherever this is?
Unfortunately that would lead down an evil Road There have been times in recent history when people gave themselves the control to decide who would not be able to breed Not only would it be evil to make a decision like that for somebody else it would quickly get out of control because who is qualified to make that decision? Donald Trump? The pope? Your doctor? Nazi Germany? China? Who? Nobody it’s everybody’s own right to decide.

Was recommending the COVID vaccine to a patient at a routine office visit. He said he read on the internet that they “put a microchip” in the vaccine and that it was “made by the Illuminati”. I pointed at his cellphone and told him you’re already being tracked buddy, not sure about that Illuminati 5G family plan though.
My best friend's dad was heavily anti-vax. He stopped speaking to her after she vaxxed her son who was 12. He told her she was poisoning his grandson and would never forgive her. Cut to: 3 months later he gets covid. He's in his 70's so it was really bad and he wound up in the hospital on a ventilator. He asked them if he could get the vax now and they said it was too late to help him. He ended up dying :( My friend had lost her mom to cancer the year before and her dad died with bad blood between them and it devastated her. My in-laws refuse to get it as well, and it terrifies me. I've tried so hard to warn them but they believe in all of the conspiracy theories about it and almost got into my husband's head with it, but I talked sense into him and he got it.
One of my mom's stupid friends was a massive anti-vaxxer until her son gave her an ultimatum - that she would no longer be able to have ANY contact with her grandchildren until she was fully vaccinated. Guess who couldn't make an appointment fast enough?

Load More Replies...My neighbor and several relatives believed the vaccine = tracking microchip. My standard response became "You aren't interesting enough for them to track"
I believe that some people are anti-vax because it's the most harm they can do to society with the least amount of effort.
When I got my Covid vaccine, the nurse asked if we wanted to know possible side effects. I said no thanks, I already had the 5g microchip implant. She was not amused.
I know it sounds harsh but I really think the antivaxxers should have been much lower priorities during triage. Aren't ppl rejected from transplant lists if they aren't going to be responsible? Same idea
I said the same thing. If they refuse to be vaccinated then they also need to sign an official document stating that they will not accept any medical aid for covid related health issues. They also shouldn't be allowed to go out in public, shopping, work, even dropping off their children at school. Children should be homeschooled and the unvaccinated parents are only allowed to work from home. Sad to say I didn't get anyone agreeing with me
Load More Replies...I can't imagine being this self important that you think that the government is putting a microchip in you.
One of my friends refused the covid vaccine and VERY nearly died. She's 40.
It’s important to remember that nothing that you google remains private. “It can later be used to target you with ads, your search history can be seen by someone who gets access to your device, or your information may even be stolen by malware,” he explained.
Markuson argues that the only way to check medical facts on the internet is to ask your general practitioner about it. “The information is more reliable on government or official hospital websites.” Having said that, the cybersecurity expert added that you still should consult with your doctor before deciding to use any medication.
When I was a medical student I met a woman who was heavily interested in homeopathy and natural healing, who started drinking her own urine. You can often drink small amounts with no issue, but she was drinking *only* urine. Urine has a high salt concentration, and she ended up dehydrated with an acute kidney injury.
Urine has all the toxins that the kidneys filter out of the blood, no? So she's basically trying to poison herself, keeping her kidneys hyperactive until death.
Not only toxins but also other waste products like -as mentioned here- excess salt.
Load More Replies...When I was younger, my grandma advised me to wash my eyes with my morning urine everyday, to cure my shortsightedness. It was genetic and everyone had it...including grandma.
Some especially stupid antivaxxers have recently been promoting "urine therapy" so.... there's that.
When I first heard about urine therapy, I was blown away. People drink it, pour it in their eyes, etc, it's absolutely crazy!
Load More Replies...I saw a Facebook post once where somebody was trying urine therapy.. ew. Do not drink your urine as it’s not only disgusting but something produced by your body.
"Something produced by your body"? What about breastmilk?

My family has a history of kidney disease and the thing that we have been told the most is to take our medication, eat a proper diet, and drink lots of water.
I'm just an accountant. Once I talked with a diabetic who read on the internet that cinnamon controlled blood sugar. So he stopped taking his medication, and relied on cinnamon instead.
It cost him his big toe, which he lost to diabetic amputation.
Why do I think the guy was probably from the US and couldn't afford his live-saving medicine so he tried to find an affordable substitute? I don't think he was dumb, I think he was desperate.
You've too much faith in humanity... I'm not from the US - we have healthcare for everyone (more or less...) and meds for diabetics is refunded. Still, tons of people do things like the person from the post (and much worse).
Load More Replies...Fun fact: 1 in 40 men will get an erection just from smelling Cinnamon! In most men it increases blood flow to the penis by around 20%. I'm one of those 1 in 40.
Honest question, why did he need to have his toe amputated? Was something wrong with it?
Untreated diabetes can lead to untreatable sores, then amputation. https://khn.org/news/diabetic-amputations-a-shameful-metric-of-inadequate-care/
Load More Replies...Actually Cinnamon can help with blood sugar levels. Some of this work shows it may curb blood sugar by lowering insulin resistance. In one study, volunteers ate from 1 to 6 grams of cinnamon for 40 days. (One gram of ground cinnamon is about half a teaspoon.) The researchers found that cinnamon cut cholesterol by about 18% and blood sugar levels by 24%. It comes in capsules, do not try to take the powder by mouth, it wont end well. lol.
Now I'm intrigued. What will happen if you try to eat the powder? I hate the taste of cinnamon, so I will not try it myself.

Medicine doctor here; clinic incident a while ago - discussing preventative medicine with one of the patients and encouraging them to get covid vaccine. They refused and I offered to discuss their concerns and hopefully answer any doubts. After talking a while they finally said I am not going to be getting the vaccine. Told them I respect their opinion and I am available if they have any questions that come up in the future and then told them that if it makes them feel better I got the vaccine in December 2020 and am very grateful for it because it kept me safe and allowed me to care for all the covid patients. They looked at me blankly for a full 30 seconds and then said that I should start getting my affairs in order and that I am going to die in dec 2022 because they read online that anyone who gets the vaccine will die within 2 years of getting it. Tried to have a more informed conversation with them and provide evidence but I realized I wasn’t getting anywhere.
One of my family members thinks that covid vaccine causes infertility. I asked him how many doses do I need to take to be sure it'll work. He wasn't amused.
That would certainly be a cheaper option than 30ish years of birth control or sterilization surgery!

FWIW, my wife and I recently moved and we needed to find a new pediatrician. When talking to them we ask them if they are willing to treat patients who refuse vaccines. If they say YES, then we will not use that office. I do not want our kids to be exposed to some other kid's measles because their parents are psychotic. My 5 year old and wife both have immunological issues, and I cannot risk their health because some wack-job has facebook.

It is no secret that many people turn to the internet to find out information about their symptoms and complaints. Similarly, they look for nonexistent drugs and may even fall into the trap of scammers.
“It is never a good idea to buy medications online. A lot of scammers try to make money out of people’s naivety,” Markuson explained. “Some of them may even have fake websites for selling their products easier and look pretty reliable at first glance.”
That’s why it is always important to either buy medication physically in a pharmacy or consult your doctor about trusted online resources.
Literally in the elevator the other day I had a woman look straight at my badge and then tell me “you know these blue hospital masks are only good for 30 seconds right? After that might as well not be wearing one”
I honestly didn’t know how to respond.
I don’t think it is useless to tell people like this that they’re terribly misinformed. Not if they seem threatening, of course, but otherwise there is no reason to pretend they are saying something sensible when they aren’t.

Respiratory therapist here. Mostly I have enjoyed reading the public comments on articles relating to COVID. Highlights have included:
"The ventilators are killing people! If people can breath on their own, they do better on high flow oxygen" Right. Believe it or not, we don't intubate people because it's a slow Tuesday, it's because (in the case of COVID) their oxygen demands have exceeded other mean of delivery (BiPAP, usually)
"COVID isn't a lung issue! It's a gas exchange issue!" Sure. And where does the primary source of gas exchange occur? Yep. That's the lungs.
Also had a patient that didn't believe he had COVID. Even went so far as to ask if the q-tip we used for the test came from the bottom of the box where it could be contaminated by actual COVID positive tests, since he heard that can happen. (All our lab tests are individually packaged of course)
We had an older (60s) couple that ended up with COVID, and we had them together in the same room. Most of us thought the man was going to die, as he was pretty bad. Their daughter was there almost around the clock. Many of us had long conversations with her about various treatments and expectations. Even she had mentioned it was just so different living thru it than what she had been expecting thru social media.
When they had first came in, we had them in separate, smaller rooms since that's what we had available. After a week or so, one opened up where we could put them together. The daughter asked me point blank "So, are these rooms opening up because the people in them died?" I was honest. "Yes. That exactly what's happening". She just nodded her head. I don't think she was expecting that answer.
Luckily, for most people (myself included) it really is/was much like a bad cold or a flu. It's that small percentage of unlucky people where it's worse. More vaccinations mean less of those people dying.

I had a conversation with a friend who said that hospitals were committing fraud by listing causes of death as COVID when they weren't. I keep seeing articles saying that's not true and some experts think it's undercounted. The convo goes on and she starts talking about underlying health issues and I pointed out that like with AIDS many people died because they got things such as pneumonia but these were young people who wouldn't have gotten those diseases or died from them but did because they also had AIDS so it was AIDS. This has more information about the underreporting of AIDS as cause of death: https://www.thinkglobalhealth.org/article/wrong-code
Yup. Both of my parents died of cancer--yet that's not what's listed on the death certificates. IIRC my father's lists the cancer as a secondary cause (it appears the cancer blocked his remaining kidney, thus the immediate cause of death was the imbalances that happen in kidney failure--IIRC there was no autopsy) and I don't think my mother's even lists the cancer at all (she died from an infection that got out of hand because of the chemo.) AIDS is the extreme example--nobody dies of AIDS. AIDS opens the door for something else to kill you.

I regularly have to explain to junior detectives and families that an autopsy does not function as it does on CSI and I can't just speculate wildly about the sex, height, hand dominance and motive of a murderer except in very specific instances. But I don't blame them, I blame f*****g CSI.
I do blame them and their educators for thinking that every movie, TV program and internet meme is a documentary, not entertainment.
Hell yes. Cartoons teach us that TV isn't real life very very early on.

this is actually becoming a real-world problem in criminal trials; the so-called CSI effect
Can they also identify any white powder by dipping a finger in it and touch it to the tip of their tongue?
Battery acid leaves a white powder. I suppose you can identify it by putting it on your tongue but I do not recommend. Also potassium cyanide. Fentanyl. LSD. Yes, go ahead. Lick all the white powders. I shall stand here with the 9 and the 1 already dialed, okay?

She always knows the dirt under the nails came from a specific train yard in a specific state and she magically has that information an hour after the autopsy is performed. And she can tell by the weight on the victims right hip that he was from a remote village in Scandinavia.
I blame them, particularly the detectives. They're in an incredibly important and responsible job in which critical thinking is absolutely crucial to their success. If they can't understand that TV shows and reality are different then how do they expect to catch real criminals.
CSI and the like are literally science fiction. A story doesn't have to be set in space or in the future to be sci-fi, it just has to have fictional science. Almost everything in shows like CSI, from the "zoom and enhance" cliche to the "DNA results in minutes solves everything" is pure fictional science.
By the way this is a question that has puzzled me for years. How do they keep all the flies out of a mortuary? Please, if there are any mortuary assistants reading this give me an answer as it’s really bugging me! It’s bad enough with left over cat food attracting bluebottles so how do mortuaries manage?
Everything (everyone) is kept refrigerated until embalmed. Once embalmed there is no putrefaction to draw flies. Everything fly attractive is cleaned up and disposed of.

I had a friend about 10 years ago go to a "faith healer" for wrist pain from drumming and asked me to go with him. It was the dumbest s**t I have ever seen. He paid her £200 to literally just wave her hands over his wrist for 20 minutes while some pan-pipe music played.
Funnily enough, it didn't cure his carpal tunnel syndrome. Who would have thought??
It did make me wonder whether I'm missing out on an easy scam if people are THAT gullible, though XD
I had severe endometriosis for over 10 years. I had a friend who told me that all I needed to do was take herbs and eliminate certain foods to be cured of it.. she just didn't get it. I finally told her to kindly stop talking to me about it. I ended up having a hysterectomy (I had to fight my insurance company tooth and nail to cover it because they deemed it "elective") When they went to do the surgery, it was one of the worst cases they had seen and they also found tumors and a bunch of other things that would've eventually kill me. I listen to my body and knew something was horribly wrong.
Endo is no joke, but insurance companies are. Every CEO of every insurance company should have to live with endometriosis for at least one year. Dumbasses.

Okay, I am a super skeptic, BUT... About 6 years ago I got this terrible cramp in my back. I woke up in the middle of night in massive pain, couldn't walk, couldn't lay down, or sit up. Just constant pain. I took pain killers, a muscle relaxer, got a massage, but nothing worked. After about 6 days of this, and on my second trip to the doctor, she suggested that I try acupuncture. The doctor was taking learning it from her grandmother, lol. At this point I was desperate, and so she did it herself, right there in her office. It totally worked, and worked right away. It was amazing. I was laying on my belly in massive amounts of pain, she poked me with a needle and BOOM, it was completely gone. I had some soreness that lasted a couple of days caused by the muscle being strained, but the cramp was over. So, when somebody tells me they are using alternative medicine, I have nothing negative to say. Just so long as they also are seeing an actual doctor.
Acupuncture at least has some solid evidence of effectiveness. And as long as the alternative medicine isn't harmful, it's worth a shot since some of it does seem to be helpful and simply hasn't been studied. But agree that it should be done in conjunction with seeing a medical doctor rather than instead of.

I didn't want to have to miss 3 months of work for surgery again, so I tried to just live with it. One day my wife came home with one of those cheap magnetic bracelets; because it claimed to help with migraines. It didn't help. So she suggested I try it for my carpal tunnel since she had already bought them. Unbelievably, it really did help. It hasn't cured the problem; but as long as I keep wearing it most of the time I don't have numbness and tingling.
Yes, people are that gullible. Just look at how many people think that Trump is the second coming.
Not a doc (nurse) but my doctor friend who works in the ER had a patient with a few garlic cloves stuck deep in her vagina because she had read on the internet it helps with certain infections and yeast. (I realize garlic does have antibacterial properties but needs to be used *appropriately* and with caution)
If you treat a yeast infection with a clove of garlic, can you, hypothetically...produce a loaf of garlic bread?
Wait. Hold the phone. You can somehow appropriately use garlic to deal with that? Elaborate.
Yes, I believe it is 3-5 knuckle sized cloves a day. They have antibiotic properties, can lower blood pressure, and is also anticarcinogenic. Plus some other benefits. Just an amazing and tasty plant. Also: black garlic, fermented and all that jazz, tastes sweet, almost fruity with none of the burn, but all of the benefits.

Also note that it is possible to be infected by someone with a yeast infection: ex- during a heavy petting session a female grinding her exposed lady bits on your exposed thigh can transfer the candida fungus to your skin (cutaneous candida). This is not the only way though as it's a fungus, and anyone can be infected by a fungus when in contact.
I’m an RN. Patient w/diabetic foot ulcers read on the internet that salt would dry them up. He put his foot in two plastic shopping bags w/rock salt & turned his foot into prosciutto basically. Had to “carve/amputate” most of his foot. He has forever been nicknamed “hammy” by me.
Diabetics at that stage often can't feel their feet due to poor circulation and nerve damage.

I'm a nurse practitioner. When I worked in urgent care I had a patient tell me he spent 5k of his own money (because insurance wouldn't cover it) on getting an MRI of his shoulder because when he held his arm above his head for a long time it went numb and tingly. I just stared at him dumbfounded for about 5 seconds before moving on.
Dear OP: Read about Cubital Tunnel and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. I know you are an NP and I am just a Graphic Designer, but had I not had surgery to treat both of these syndromes after a few dumfounded NPs looked at me like I was crazy, I would have had half of my hand amputated and lost my ability to create art. The thoracic surgeon who saved my life told me "nerves hold grudges after damage, their way of telling you they are upset is to stop working - hence numbness and tingling." JUST SAYIN
5k on an MRI? Sounds like a ripoff, MRI doesn't cost more than 100€ if paid out of pocket.
There is actually a condition that will cause those symptoms, though I don't know how long he held up his arm.
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Had my left first rib removed in February because of it. Had one doctor tell me that it was all in my head and I should probably stop trying to make my hand go numb. I hadn't had feeling in my ring and pinky finger for over 20 years. Turns out my version was a birth defect.

I remember she probably had fibromyalgia, admittedly a very difficult condition to manage. She presented me with a report written by a complete quack (and I use this term very rarely but it applies here). This “practitioner” had taken a strand of hair and run a “DNA” test on it for some significant amount of money. The whole report went through all her symptoms, and decided that because the patient had lived in a mouldy house 10 years ago, all her symptoms were caused by residual mould in her body. Specifically named her kidneys, heart, nervous system, and brain as having mould in. Then recommended a homeopathic remedy to fix it. The patient had swallowed this story hook, line and sinker, and nothing I could say would dissuade her. It’s the only time I have tried to track down a therapist of any kind to try to report them. Funnily enough, they chose not to respond to my e-mails or telephone messages.
A freind of mine has fibromyalgia. It is a very difficult condition to live with because it fluctuates so much and so many regular docotrs think you are imagining it all. She also tried a lot fo alternative remedies, diet changes etc etc simply to keep her hope up and not go crazy
This is worse than believing the internet. This person presumably paid money for someone to tell her some b******t that she thought was legitimate and wanted the doctor to help follow that treatment. Plus the fact that fibromyalgia is debilitating and the longer it is untreated the harder it is to get on top of. This just makes me mad!
My husband went to a therapist before I met him for over 10 years who told him he had a shyness syndrome and just being around normal people would cure him. I took him to a specialist after going through several other miss diagnosis including prescription drug addiction-but wait he wasn't taking enough to get addicted. He has stage 3 brain cancer. Classic textbook symptoms.
The combination of idiots who believe anything they read on facebook and morally bankrupt snakeoil salesman is a frightening one.

And here I am having wasted time and energy with an onslaught of tests to find out I have fibromyalgia. Kicking myself (/s)
That people with negative blood group are born genetically stronger and more immune to diseases.
For f**k's sake, Brad.
Oh God I've been made to sit through YouTube videos explaining how my then-friend's rhesus negative blood meant "She hasn't evolved from monkeys and is descended from alien life". Psychic etc, whatever you can think of they will have it 🙄 NB Musta been the meanest "super-empath" I've had the displeasure of knowing. I blame the rhesus factor entirely, without proof or irony 😆
Oh yes, why didn't I think of that! And then my rhesus positive children (who ecolved from monkeys) can't be my descentants since I (rhesus negative) am an alien life form. I know that my great grandmother's blood type was the reason she had a long series of miscarriages and triggered a serious depression that lasted for years.
Load More Replies...I have the A- blood type, which only about 14% of the population have (the majority are O+). I am definitely NOT immune to disease. Had every single childhood disease there wasn’t a vaccination for back in the sixties. Suspect I had COVID also, but it was the end of February 2020, and it wasn’t the only topic in the news for another couple weeks. In fact, the news that winter was how the predicted flu bug that that year’s flu shot was formulated for wasn’t the one people were getting. When I finally felt up to going to the doctor, and they did a swab, she didn’t recognize the results—-which is why, in hindsight, I believe it was COVID, though not an extreme case. So negative blood type does NOT give you superhuman immunity.
I'm AB+ and you should hear the c**p people tell me about my rare blood type.
I don't know about the negative blood group, but some studies are apparently showing that certain blood types are less likely to become seriously I'll from certain pathogens like Covid.
There is actually some truth to this (I am a veterinarian with a lot of scientific/medical curiosity). Though it is not as simple as negatives or positives. It's actually a bit too complicated to fully explain here, as there are multiple mechanisms for how blood type can affect susceptibility/resistance to diseases. But one way to put it is that the antigens on red blood cells (ABO, Rh, several others) can be found on a lot of different tissues beyond blood cells (in most people; non-secretors is an interesting subject to google) and those antigens have multiple functions. For example with COVID, me having type O - meant I do not have certain molecules/receptors on my lung cells = lower risk. But there are other diseases (some infectiious and some not) where other blood types fare better. I don't know details about which blood types vs diseases, I only know enough about the molecular basis of blood types and pathophysiology of certain diseases to understand the research.. mostly.
I’m rh- & so is my son. My husband is rh+ & I have the antibodies that the rhogam shot is supposed to prevent in critical levels. So every pregnancy I have will be high risk cuz if the baby is rh+ blood type my body will attack their white blood cells causing anemia & eventually death. I had a miscarriage a year before my son was born. He’s 5 months & healthy & happy 🥰
So much COVID disinformation! I enjoy teaching my patients about their health. It took me countless hours of studying in medical school and many more hours than that in residency to figure out how the body works, so I’m not usually surprised if patients are confused about things. However, since the start of the pandemic, I’ve actually had to keep current on the latest disinformation just so I know where these questions are actually coming from. I had a guy a few weeks ago come in with a Post-It Note with the word “Ivermectin” written on it. I felt like I knew where this conversation was going, but I asked: “Why do you want a prescription for ivermectin?” “Just to have it…” “Is this some treatment for COVID?” “Yeah, I read online from some doctors (WHO???) that it can boost the immune system and treat COVID.” “Sir, ivermectin is a treatment for intestinal parasites. It does nothing against a virus like the coronavirus. Further, I actually treated people in the hospital with COVID and rounded in our ICU and none of us have ever prescribed ivermectin to treat seriously ill COVID patients.” “But I read online from these guys—and they’re doctors—who said it works…” After five minutes of back and forth like this, you just need to stop, cut them off and tell them you’re not prescribing their medication and move on. There’s 20 other patients on the schedule today and I can’t fight this battle right now. Good luck, man.
It really scares me that some "doctors" out there are anti-vax. There's some in the Los Angeles area that fill people's heads with misinformation about "curing" covid.
No, sir. You have to drink the tapeworm smoothie first, wait a few weeks, and THEN the Ivermectin will help you feel better.
Ivermectin is great! For my horses. :) So far none of them have caught covid! That must mean it works right? /s
Unfortunately doctors in India were using it to treat Covid-19 long after the WHO debunked its efficacy
"I heard on Joe Rogan-" I DONT GIVE A S**T WHAT JOE ROGAINE SAID ABOUT ANYTHING MEDICINE RELATED
I was quite familiar with ivermectin. I used it to deworm my horses.
Not a doctor. As a transplant recipient, I have to take immunosuppressant medication for the rest of my life. There are studies that some people do come off them completely, but it’s such a huge risk to take that it may trigger organ rejection.
A family member of mine still can’t grasp how a life saving surgery provided by western medicine which initially saved my life, is still keeping me back from living my life. He suggested that I get off my immune suppressants because I am a cash cow for big pharma.
I had cancer and had chemo. My family member was completely against chemo. Said it was my bad diet and if I fixed that I would be fine. She is no longer my emergency contact
Well, to be fair, if you do stop taking them there’s a good chance that nobody will be able to make any more money off you. I mean, the funeral director will, but after that you should be fine.
"A family member of mine still can’t grasp how a life saving surgery provided by western medicine which initially saved my life, is still keeping me back from living my life." I can see why he'd have trouble wrapping his head around it, TBH. OP was deathly ill, had a major, complicated, expensive medical procedure--and is still seriously ill. It doesn't seem like it *should* work that way--it isn't fair. Nevertheless, it *is* how it works: being seriously ill, instead of "about to die," is the best that medical science can do for this person. The relative has the luxury of denying this harsh and unpleasant reality in favor of a fantasy; OP, on the other hand, has to face up to it if they want to continue living.
Oh very sorry to the OP, I know (to an extent) how it feels as i also take these meds and i hope that the OP will be able to safely get off the medication soon
I get so annoyed when Americans play the "big pharma" card, but call anyone who suggests universal healthcare (IE, lack of corporate for-profit health companies like "big pharma") evil socialism.
Two main contenders: Young adult woman comes in with garden variety UTI symptoms. She's terrified and distraught. Apparently good old Dr. Google told her SHE has prostate cancer. A different young woman comes into the ER complaining of painful urination and blood in the urine. This time Dr. Google informed her she most certainly has bladder cancer. (Dis?)honorable mention: "healthy" adult guy, refused Covid vaccination, who I'm admitting for hypoxia from Covid. Demanding I treat him with ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine. Because the internet says they are magical cures. Almost forgot about one from residency. Fellow has severe heart failure (functioning at 5%) and a giant blood clot in his heart that could cause a stroke/death at any time. Refuses an implanted defibrillator because "electromagnetic waves will poison his brain and heart". Refused to take warfarin (a blood thinner to dissolve the dangerous clot) because it's "rat poison" and demanded to be prescribed Coumadin instead. For those who didn't know, Coumadin IS warfarin. He also subjected me to a long rant once about the horrible doctors who wanted him to take "chemotherapy" for a UTI. The "chemotherapy" was ciprofloxacin, a commonly used antibiotic for, among other things, UTIs.

Hah! My doctor up-front told me Warafin was rat poison. I think he knew it would make me more willing to take it.
It's not rat poison, but it is used to kill rats. Basically, the normal human dosage is enough to cause internal bleeding and death in small animals. Saying it's rat poison is like saying chocolate is dog poison.

I’m sorry but the cancer one for bladder cancer is legit. I had an aunt almost died from it and that was her only symptom. Now if they came in screaming I have cancer fix it that’s different but if they’re peeing blood and having painful urination that is a telltale sign of bladder cancer.
and a few other potential conditions, as well. It wouldn't be #1 at the top of most doctors' lists, basically.

Your body stays in Ph balance on its own because anything outside of 7.35-7.45 is a steep quick slope to death.
So many people believe this pH nonsense. Like all of these insane beliefs they just aren't interested in listening or changing their minds.

Load More Replies...My cousin believes this, but strangely thinks that pineapple is alkaline and hamburgers are acidic. According to him, all junk food is acidic and all fruit is alkaline. At least his weird belief is giving him a healthy diet.
This is also just bad math. pH 8 water added to pH 2 stomach acid will result in something quite near to what you would get if you added pH 7.2 water which is somewhere around what your tap is probably putting out. It is a logarithmic scale. pH2 stomach acid literally dissolves and reacts away any base you add.... like a nice piece of bread.....
My husband got sucked into drinking alkaline water from a friend who was a distributor. He ended up with a severe case of diarrhea and horrible stomach cramps.
I have had several people patiently explain to me that lemons are alkali along with coffee. I still don't really understand what they are talking about when they tell me that yes they are acid when you measure it but not when they are part of your food intake
I guess they didn't pay attention to the pH scale in school or they just ignore it.

Conversation I had with a doctor a few days ago:
Me: "So I was told that if I can identify what food I am eating that is giving me gout I can avoid it and won't have as many flare-ups, is that right?"
Doctor: Literally laughs out loud "aaaaaaaaaaa no. Evidence for dietary based management of gout is very sketchy at best. Take the pills. Where did you even hear that?"
Me: "Your nurse said it to me...?"
Gout can be managed for many by avoiding high purine goods. No shellfish, limited seafood, less processed meat, less red meat, less/no beer, no aspirin. Adding cherries / cherry extract to your diet also helps to flush purines, drink lots of water. After a couple incredibly painful debilitating flare ups I got very good at looking up purine content of my foods and my condition is under control. I miss sushi but I prefer walking without screaming.
Gout is caused by uric acid buildup. If I limit intake of pork, peas, oatmeal and especially seafood, I'm fine
There are certain foods to avoid with gout, there’s a whole list of them. https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/gout-diet/art-20048524

Not a doctor, but work at a doctors office. One of our patients said “I do my own research. I know more than the doctor!”
It's important for both sides to do their research. My nephews were both diagnosed with FPIES (Food Protein Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome), which is a rare food allergy. None of the doctors that my sister brought them to had any idea what it was. She brought in all of the research she had done and that was what led to the official diagnosis. Doctors don't know everything medical. There's a lot that is still being discovered.
But did your sister do her research in actual medical journals, or in the YouTube comment section? The former can be very productive to discussing your case with a GP. The latter is useless and kills people.

Doctors may know more than you but they don't know everything.
I was born with hirschsprung's disease and I can count on one hand how many doctors I have had that have even heard of it. So I have to give them research. The other day I was in the ER and the doctor there actually knew what it was. That was awesome!

Not a doctor but went to an urgent care for concerns about an unusually high resting heart rate and just high heart rate in general which was very worrisome but kind of expected (as well as feeling kind of unwell overall) after being on 50mg strattera for ADHD and depression. The NP said that it was likely from strattera being a stimulant, to which I replied that it was a non-stimulant that I was prescribed for both depression and ADHD symptoms but was curious about if my increase was normal. She looked annoyed and said “look I think I know that ADHD medications are stimulants mmkay? And I’ve read about strattera online: it’s not an antidepressant” and I said “okay well my psychiatrist specifically put me on this medication to help depression and ADHD as a non-stimulant.” She responded with “I’ll get you a printout of your visit and info to know about your stimulant.” She returned without info about my “stimulant”, so I asked innocently about the strattera printout and she responded “have a nice day” with some attitude LMAO
HA! Yes, Concerta and Strattera are non-stimulants. Ritalin and Adderall are stimulants.
Concerta is absolutely a stimulant. It's an extended release form of methylphenidate (aka Ritalin). Clonidine is not a stimulant, though, and is sometimes used to treat ADHD.

Then I took a few breaths of air, took some time to Google possible causes, and low and behold, several types of berries can have this effect as well. Never felt such relief, as my baby had had berries for the first time in her life the day before.
hah! I recently bought a box of Cap'n Crunch All berries, and it turns it that baby sh*t green. 😂
Not a doctor, but I have had an instance where somebody told me something stupid that they read on the internet. A couple of years ago, I was dealing with some mild back pain. I texted a friend about it, and after 30 seconds she replies telling me that I have spine cancer. After telling her that there was no way that I had "spine cancer" she continued to insist that she was correct and that her mom was a doctor so she knew these things. smh
My parents have been on planes, I'm genetically predisposed to being excellent at passenger-ing. Free tickets, yes? 😁

Load More Replies...Not a doctor, but a relative of a doctor. One set of distant cousins live across the street from us, and they know my sister is a doctor. Two members of that household got diagnosed with some form of cancer: my cousin's wife and one of the people she employed in her business (business was set up in her home). Both of them consulted with my sister (note: oncology is not her specialty, but she's got a good network of fellow doctors whom she could refer people to), who advised them to see an oncologist that she knows. Our cousin's wife decided that that was too expensive and went on some kind of holistic/herbal medical route, *despite my sister's warnings*. The employee wanted to see the oncologist, but she was worried that she could not afford it; she also had a family to support, and she was scared to leave them. My sister managed to get the employee to her oncologist friend and get her the treatment she needed and have the expenses paid. Not sure if she paid out of pocket or rallied somewhere for financial support, but the help was given (and I'm so proud of my sister). The employee survived; our cousin's wife passed away almost a year later.
65% of all US bankruptcies involve medical bills. How many people are dying because they they can't afford treatment ? We are not the greatest nation on the earth..... not even close.
My life is shot from unpaid medical bills.

Im not a doctor but I asked a doctor a really dumb question once. My stepndaughter is very Underweight. She is in 1 percent for age and height. We have been trying hard to help her gain weight while being healthy and developing good eating habits. We dont want to encourage over eating or eating nothing but junk food so that if it turns out her weight is health related or her metabolism changes she doesnt end up over weight. One set of grandparents revelaed to us they were helping her stretch her stomach. She would eat until full and then they would force her to keep eating so her stomach would get bigger. This sounded like nonsense to me and even the internet didn't support it as being real outside of fringe weight lifting forums. To shut them up about it I asked the doctor. The doctor gave me a look of disbelief like I had just asked if unicorns could be utilized in the process and said that wasn't a thing. The doctor did say to give the kid Pediasure which the grandparents logically recuse to do.
That's not a dumb question. It's gathering medical evidence to protect your child and to proof the grandparents were in the wrong.
Seriously, please do not ever leave your daughter with your grandparents again until they snap out of that c**p.
Recently. 5 year old boy brought in by mum with a sore ear. Diagnosed with an ear (otitis media) infection, given backpocket antibiotics to start if getting worse or ongoing in another 36 hours (as they often go away on their own).
Mum declined, is going to take the kid to a naturopath for treatment instead.
Unlikely to have a poor outcome (but still possible), but why the f**k did you come and see me?
Not a "doctor" but a veterinary technician. We had people come in with a dog that was heartworm positive. Did not want to do treatment because what we use to kill the heartworms is poison. They were going to give the dog Guinness beer cause they read on an animal rescue page it is a safe treatment. The amount to kill the heartworms was also a dangerous amount for the dog. These so called animal "rescues" amaze me with their ignorance.
Because they hope the vets to agree with the treatment. If not then obviously they will still go with what they wanted any way.

My grandpa, before the internet, heard through the grapevine that putting warm oil plus garlic in the ear can make your ears squeaky clean.....Add the habit of cleaning with a toothpick, now he has no eardrum in one ear and partial hearing in [the other].
Some people just produce more earwax than others, so that could be what he was trying to clean.
Load More Replies...I used to have a problem with excessive wax buildup in one of my ears and the nurse suggested putting a little dab of olive oil on some cotton wool and stick in in my ear overnight. It did make a massive difference and it saved me having to get my ear syringed every few weeks.
All these people having extreme life changing accidents because of s**t they've heard of been told or read on the internet. People please stop and think. Then see a doctor.
I have tried this. Simmered minced garlic in olive oil, strained, and used the oil on my kids when they have ear infections. It does actually work. This guy’s issue was stabbing his ear with a tooth pick. What the hell is that?
Having had the garlic oil in my ear for an infection: can confirm this works. But dang, even thinking about it I can still smell it

Im not a doctor but I did witness a doctor trying to help a child during my daughters soccer game in grade school The child dropped to the ground with leg cramps and the doctor immediately came from the stands and was tending to her when a "Karen" began shouting to him to give her a banana because they have phosphorus in them.
So Karen was sort of right. Lack of potassium will cause leg cramps and bananas are a good source of potassium.
Karen was shouting they had phosphorus in though.
Load More Replies...Not me but my friend who has a doctor of pharmacy works in a pharmacy said that once she had a female patient who came in with a vaginal yeast infection (symptoms include thick white discharge resembling cottage cheese). She was prescribed a vaginal cream. Then she proceeded to ask with a serious face whether her boyfriend can “lick her pussy” later that day since google told her that this infection isn’t serious.
In all seriousness, it's a bad idea. For multiple reasons. But also because it can lead to the infection being passed back to the first partner after they finish the course of treatment.
Right. A yeast infection in the throat is called thrush.

I was on night watch at the ER and a patient had cut his finger with a knife while cooking. There was a weird powder on the wound mixed with blood, so I asked what it was and he told me he put paprika on it to 'stop the bleeding.
No, mustard for burns! That burning feeling is how you know it's "pulling the burn out." /s
Load More Replies...I've seen (more than once) coffee grounds used for this purpose. Both dry and used.
It's turmeric. It helps to stop bleeding and is also an antiseptic that will prevent infections. Very commonly used in developing countries.
Had a patient come in with horrid cellulitis bc they thought they read that putting dirt in a cut would help stimulate their immune system. It did for all the wrong reasons.
not a doctor or nurse or anything, but my friend once cut himself and he said that he read on the intenet if he rubbed dirt in it he wouldn't get cancer... LIKE WTF
Read the news. Apparently everything causes cancer these days.
Load More Replies...A weird lady at a shop once said that all you needed to get rid of sickness was belief. She said that if someone with cancer believed that eating a spoonful of dirt a day would cure it, it would.
But if he still hasn't gotten cancer in that cut, technically he's not wrong
When I was a student I had a patient come into the ER past midnight one night complaining about a rash that had been so itchy that he can’t sleep. I asked if he’s seen a dermatologist because it had been going on for a while and he said yes. The dermatologist prescribed a med that had stopped the itching, but the patient doesn’t take it anymore because it makes him feel sleepy.
Not funny, had a similar problem few years ago. The problem is the medicine makes you sleepy all the time, not just when you want to sleep. I almost fainted at work before we figured out the right product without this side-effect.
I think this is fairly common but my dad was a psychiatrist and more then once after he gave a diagnosis and therapy to a patient they would correct him saying that he was wrong because they read on the internet that they had another condition and so he had to give them the therapy they were suggesting instead. So they were basically just expecting him to sign the prescription they were asking (needless to say he didn't)
I can't stand doctor Google. You start with a mild headache and by the time you're done you are dead.
As a medical student, on day in ER I met a young man (30s) who told me that his knees were different one from another. He was having a shower when he saw that and decided to go to the hospital. I looked at his knees and there were normal, not swollen at all. I made him move the legs, touched the knees to see if he had pain. Nothing. Nothing at all. His knees were perfect, maybe one different from the other one, but human body is not perfect. Right and left sides are different. I made my job with care while I was wondering what to tell to this guy. The situation was really weird, but this guy looked okay, no psychiatric patient. At the end I told him that it was all right, then I called the ER doctor and went to visit another patient (my job was to listen and visit one patient, write down and wait the doctor in charge for the official medical examination or go to another patient). There are a lot of people who come to ER for problems than can be resolved with a normal medical visit outside of the hospital
People who do this make me insane. It clogs up the ER when a visit to your family doctor or walk-in clinic would have been completely sufficient. I was watching one of those shows where they follow Paramedics around the other night and was shocked by some of the things people will call an ambulance for! Some guy literally called 911 because he stubbed his toe. And they still drove him to the hospital! What a waste of resources! Another woman called 911 because her kid stuck something up his nose. And then there was the guy who had a toothpick in his skin. Sorry people, but those are NOT emergencies. I'd be a terrible medic or 911 operator because I'd probably just tell those people to f**k off and go see their regular doctor.
I avoid the ER like it's the plague. It's such a waste of time if there's an urgent care center or appointment available. If I were worried about something like this (which I can't imagine being worried about, but if I were...) it *might* warrant a message to my doc via the online portal. And that's about it.
[One of my patients] said she read on the internet that one dark beer a day before going to bed helps the baby stay healthy while breastfeeding
It's called milk stout and was created and designed to contain large amounts of vitamins B and D to help women who were malnourished during and after WWI in the UK because of rationing and food shortages. It had very little alcohol and a lot of calories. NO ONE "needs" it now. For any woman with a relatively normal diet, it's not going to improve milk production.
Load More Replies...Yes, that has some truth in it. Guinness contains iron, which helps the mother not to become anaemic (it used to be prescribed by doctors in the UK to pregnant women - a glass of stout stirred with a heated iron poker), and stimulates milk, so overall baby is likely to be better nourished.
My mother did this in the 80's, as recommended by her doctor for helping with lactation (she didn't even like beer). Nowadays science has shown this is bogus but back then it wasn't
Assuming it's mom drinking the beer, not baby right? This is a pretty common old wives tale that may or may not have a kernel of truth to it, but at least it's harmless. There is nothing wrong with a breastfeeding woman having the occasional drink, as the amount of alcohol that transfers in the milk is miniscule.
Noo, please don't drink alcohol while breastfeeding! Try malt beer (Malzbier / Vitamalz....) instead!!! It's a non-alcoholic very caramelly sweet tasting kind of beer sold in the same brown bottles. Really curbs the lactation.
Best friend is ER doctor and someone came into ER because they couldn’t get an erection
I mean, depending on the situation it might have been an emergency! ;-)
Yeah, I gotta say a lot of these read like Darwinism in action.

I'm a retired hospital nurse. I had a patient with a badly infected wound on his leg. His girlfriend came to the hospital with something she printed from social media that said infections can be treated by exercise because it increases blood flow to the infected area. I’m certainly in favor of being physically active, but this patient desperately needed IV antibiotics. The doctor and I tried to convince him to stay, but the patient signed himself out. And the girlfriend said “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure he gets lots of exercise.” The patient returned to the hospital by ambulance a few days later and died in the emergency department.
I can imagine. Also, thank you for all you do

I was a nurse on a COVID unit for 1.5 years. My favorite story is my one patient who was insistent that he did not have COVID. He kept trying to leave against medical advice, which I'm usually fine with as long as the patient understands the risk. However, this guy was on 10L of oxygen (a high amount). I finally told him that he can claim he has whatever disease he wants to, but if he tries to leave, he's not going to die before he reaches the lobby. That got his attention, thankfully. He still claimed he didn't have COVID, but he stopped trying to leave.
