My Photo Project Shows That Stuttering Should Not Be Ashamed Of

If you’ve ever talked to a person who stutters, you’ve probably noticed the personal and often unique tics and movements people use to get through a difficult sound or sentence. Those who stutter often feel self conscious about these expressions, and I believe one of the big factors in why is because they are never represented anywhere.

Representation matters, and that’s why I was thrilled when members of Málbjörg, the National Stuttering Association in Iceland, contacted me about shooting pictures for a calendar for them. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to get enough people who were willing to stutter in front of the camera to make a full calendar from these pictures, but thankfully, we did them anyway. I think showing these unique expressions is an important step towards normalising them, and towards promoting awareness about stuttering.

Multilingual photographer and visual artist currently residing in Reykjavík, Iceland. I graduated with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art Photography from Kingston University in 2011. I tend to get interested in things quickly and intensely, then forget about it when a new thing captures my interest. My work is therefore quite varied and can seem to lack coherency, but at the core of it there is always an exploration of the Self in relation to the Other.

As a stutter, I appreciate these people allowing themselves to be photographed while stuttering. I doubt I would have that much courage.
