I Photographed A Sighthound For Dia De Muertos

I travelled to Oaxaca Mexico for the Day of the Dead celebrations some years ago and I have to say it was one of the most fascinating and memorable experiences I have ever had. If you do not know what the Dia de Muertos is, it’s a celebration of lost friends and relatives. It takes place over 3 days, from October 31 to November 2nd and there are parades, night processions, candlelight vigils in cemeteries (and mariachi bands playing next to some graves, with tequila!) and of course lots of good food! The gorgeous colonial city is decorated with flowers and skulls and it’s people costumed, and friendly. It’s a feast for the senses!

I had this idea in my head to do a styled doggy shoot in homage to Dia de Muertos. I unlisted the help of the best groomer in town who did an amazing job at drawing the skeleton on the italian greyhound. All we needed was a flower crown and a break in the rainfall that day and everything was just perfect!

I also had a bunch of “dancing” shots so I just had to make a Dance Macabre montage.
