I Photographed Black Cats For Halloween

I am an animal advocate and pet photographer in Los Angeles who uses animal photography to help them get adopted.

For this Halloween-themed series, I photographed black cats against a black background to emphasize their beauty and showcase their personalities.

Black cats have the lowest cat adoption rates and the highest euthanasia rates, in part because they typically don’t photograph well. I wanted to show that it is possible to get great pictures of these adorable cats. I hope my photos inspire people to adopt such beautiful cats and to volunteer for their local animal shelter.

The cats featured below are from West Los Angeles Animal Services and Milo’s Sanctuary.

"Some believe that Celts and witches would sacrifice cats by throwing them into a fire, often in wicker cages, and that people still do this today. Because of this fear, many animal shelters refuse to allow cats to be adopted during the Halloween season, fearing that the cats could be killed, and people are advised to keep their black pets indoors."

I’m more of a dog person, but would love a black cat if I wasn’t allergic cats in general. Rita’s eyes are beautiful.

Amateur photographer..how would this be achieved with limited resources? I work at an open intake shelter and the black cats *and dogs always fall wayside.

Hi. I use a flash on my camera and that is the most important thing for me, especially when shooting black cats/dogs. Also when I edit the photos, I make the shadows lighter so you can see more detail in their faces/fur.

I love all cats. Two of our four are black (all were stray cats we took in). I appreciate you taking the time to photograph these beautiful animals and hope it improves their chances of being adopted. All animals deserve a chance for a happy life!

Some are not 'black cats', but the photos are great. My Mom's cat is black with green eyes. Her name is Jade.

Black kitties´re adorable, some of Gizzy, Thori and Sisi, da second hand kittehz & my best(est) furriends´re black, like angel Homer Blind WonderCat & his siblings Clayton & F***y, Cole & Marmalade (only Cole), Tumbelina, Peculiar Panther (sorry but I can´t tag him), Salem The Cat, SALEM Ireton. The Adventures of Harley & Salem, SALEM KITTY, and our family had a black Bombay mix too once, but only for 2 years, then he disappeared around Halloween of 1988 at the age of only 4 years, my "sister" (she´s nuts now somehow, was really mean to me and ended all contacts 3 days before Catmas in 2013) and her then boyfriend had bottle-raised Mutz after he had found him abandoned in their garage, with his eyes still closed, in 1984, but when both had to work longer again he started marking the whole appartment in spite of having been neutered, so our family adopted him, and he stopped doing it immediately in our appartment because there´s always someone been home.... He was my first cat for real,

Sorry but my comment was too long, here´s the rest: slept on my legs on my bed at night, came to me to be petted, cuddled & brushed and also to play with me, but only accepted our mum as "can opener & litterbox service" and ignored my brother and our "father" more or less, we - especially I - did everything trying to find him again, but we never found out what happened to him, while searching for our Mutz I found one semi-longhaired black cat from a close farm and a dark grey cat dead (or what´s been left of them, no details here) that´ve probably been killed after having been abused by some occult group that´s been in our quarter those days, so Mutz probably became a victim fo them either, I´ll never forget him!!! 😭😭😭 The only one who had bad luck from the colour of his fur was Mutz himself....
