As a stop-motion animator, I am always paying attention to materials and their properties. The more experience I got with fiber and needle felting, the more determined I became to make an animation out of wool. There’s Claymation, so why not Wool…motion? mation?

When HansenCrafts hired me to show the evolution of handspinning, I jumped at the opportunity to try out my idea. Everything you see on the screen is natural fiber (sheep, goat, llama, silk, cotton and grass) in various stages of processing. Within the needle felted wool you will find wire and toothpick frames, secured onto rigid blue foam.

Three and half months later, I emerged from my studio with tufts of fiber clinging to my clothes, and two minutes of woolly animation.
