I Paint Realistic Animal Portraits On Delicate Feathers

I have always been madly in love with creating art and painting feathers has become my newest obsession. The challenge of building up layers of paint on such a fragile surface is both exciting and arduous. With such a small, delicate canvas, I have to make sure my brush strokes are gentle and precise. I use acrylic paints and tiny paint brushes, and all of the feathers I use were naturally molted – many of which were donated to me by parrot owners, or were shed from my own five pet birds.

I have been making a name for myself as an artist over the past few years, specializing in colored pencil and charcoal pet portraiture, and am very pleased to now be accepting commissions for custom painted feathers as well. I love what I do and am so excited to see what the future has in store for me on this artistic journey.

You re-purposed nature's feathers into something beautiful. Your work is stunning. I am a new fan. <3

You are amazing. Any chance you could make earrings out of these and sell them? I know I would buy them and be proud to rock them!!

Your skill is amazing and the final artwork is very very beautiful. But I'm curious, where do you get the feathers from? I know feathers can be found by chance in the parks, but I guess, if you're a collector, you'd have a safer source for your painting material. Also, I exclude the chance you're hunting those birds down, oh my, not! So... I'm curious.

Thanks, Daria! It explains where I get my feathers in the first part of the article. Most are donated to me from parrot owners, and I have used feathers from my own birds as well. They are all naturally molted.

This is amazing. I love feathers and your work makes them even more precious. Do you preserve them somehow?

They are absolutely beautiful and obviously made with a lot of skill, but what are you supposed to do with a loose painted feather. So easy to damage or ruffle. If only it came in some kind of glass display or something.

Thank you! And yes, they are framed behind glass for display (more often done by the purchaser).

Unfortunately, another commenter here was correct. These feather paintings were originally done by artist Jamie Homeister. She posted them here on Boredpanda 2 years ago and they are almost identical in style and subject. Not saying anyone can't paint on feathers as well, but this certainly not her original idea or style : (

As I said to the other commenter, she gave me feathers and encouraged me to paint years ago. It is not her original style or idea, as plenty of other artists do feather painting, as well as her and my painting styles are very different.
