I Made These Chameleons Out Of Thousands Of Glass Beads

I created this piece originally in college as part of my advanced drawing course. The assignment was to create a drawing made up of an object.

I chose chameleons as my subject to serve as a metaphor for the inner/outer self.

Despite popular belief, chameleons change color according to mood/mental state. The chameleon on the below is a metaphor for the ideal. Its coloring and position represent a content and pleasant state.

The chameleon above is the opposite state. The two represent different facets of the self in flux, presented in a balancing-act sort of scenario.

Constructing the chameleons entirely out of tiny colored glass beads was a very tedious, meditative process that allowed for much introspection.

Each glass bead was individually selected and glued.

The result is an allegorical self-portrait for different facets of the self, created at a time when I was still discovering and developing myself.

Your work is beautiful, and I can imagine the finished product hanging on someone's wall! It looks like very intricate bead embroidery. Did you work from a preliminary drawing, or did you have to "wing it?"

Thanks so much :) I had a preliminary sketch I referenced so I could maintain the anatomy.

In my art class in college , we had the same type of assignment . Of course , my work was not as successful as yours. Beautiful & detailed , requiring a lot of patience. My family had a chameleon when we were growing up. It was a lot of fun to watch it change colors.

"created at a time when I was still discovering and developing myself." = You're now dead inside. Literally, there is never a time nor age when you shouldn't still be discovering and developing yourself. Stand Not Still Unless Your Meditation Makes You Forget You Are Standing... which is why most people choose to sit down, because falling over can cause head trauma, lol.
