Over the last 7 years I have made more than 3500 birdhouses in various projects all over the world. Birds are some of the few animals still living in our cities, and I began this project because I thought that it was important to make sure that they can continue living here.
People always ask me if birds use the houses. My answer is that birds move into the houses if there are birds in the area, so birds will not move into the houses if they are hung on a light pole next to a noisy road. But they will do it in a tree in a park. The project is both about creating a shelter for birds, and also about reminding us that it’s important to leave room for birds in the urban world.

Over the last 7 years I have made more than 3500 birdhouses in various projects all over the world
Birds are some of the few animals still living in our cities
I began this because I thought that it was important to make sure that they can continue living here
It’s about creating a shelter for birds…
…and also about reminding us that it’s important to leave room for birds in the urban world
The totem was created as part of a recycle workshop involving the local community
I made this recycle birdhouse decoration for the nordic counsel during culture night in Copenhagen
The houses are all made from scrapwood, and painted in colors matching the flags of the nordic countries
The birdhouse totem is a part of my ongoing Happy City Birds project and consists of 300 birdhouses put together on a tree
This collection was made from broken skateboards in 2012
All boards were donated by local skateboarders around Copenhagen.
I also made a house for ducks
Small holes were made for smaller birds in the towers to befriend the ducks. I also planted a small tree in a hidden pot on the island close to the castle.
These look like birds
This was around 600 birdhouses for an installation in a festival
After the festival I gave all the birdhouses to people and asked them to hang them up and send me pictures
The camouflage bird house project is all about creating safe homes for our little friends
I even made a big birdhouse for myself

Share on FacebookI really appreciate your idea and kind hearted ness but I have to suggest that you should probably consult a wildlife biologist before providing so much housing for birds as it is important to consider which species will utilize the housing. They housing may be used by invasive species such as pegions who actually displace native species who's populations are declining-native species enhance the local ecosystem the as they have evolved along with the geographic location for so long. Also, the housing seems to be in dense clusters, parasites and other pathogens such as viruses and bad bacteria can spread easily through the housing when it's set up in such a way when not all species would choose to build nests so close to one another but will utilize such dense housing if it's available and easy to access.
I just was talking about this today! Looks good and very good idea as birds eat bugs(mosquitoes) . BUT , as I have learned there is a downside, my car needs to be washed daily and my pool is a birdbath!
You should make a birth-bath for them then, because birth can easily drown if the water is deeper then they can stand in. They also apreciatse sand baths. About your car, build or rent a garage or make sure you don't pakt your care close to their daily hang out ( beneath a tree or telephon/electricity wire) and it shouldn't be a problem anymore
Load More Replies...Where are the birds ? The holes are too small for them to fit in them.
You're a clever guy and a most colorful project but these don't look like truly functional bird houses. They need ventilation holes and need to be cleaned out twice per season. Peaked roofs aren't ideal either because wasps tend to build their nests in them. I found a dead Chickadee mom on the nest and there was a wasps nest in the peak. Even the so called bird experts still don't have it right with designing of bird houses so don't take my comment to heart. What you've done still makes people smile. And did you take into consideration the different sized holes for different species of birds? Houses shouldn't be placed close together either, like only 1 type of house per yard and far away from another. There are specs on the Audubon website.
I love it.... that is awesome I love birds soo much! & they know it too. They cheer me up! Good idea am soo inspired. God bless you;)
That's is sweet of u to build houses for birds. I just think the entry holes r too small. Or they will fit in only sparrows. What about slightly bigger birdies?
The project is f****n aewsome like an urban art, but with a different purpose, in my opinion, like, to allert for the absence of birds in park areas and stuff..I am a biologist, i dont know if birds would choose for these houses because of the strong colors. But like i said, i loved it like an urban intervention. Hugs!
I've been wondering where all those wonderful birdhouses were coming from! Absolutely love them!
I´m sorry to say that but those houses could be really dangerous for bird - most of them are very colorfull which attract cats and martens - its like to say "come and eat me!" Its nice as an art project but very bad idea for bird houses...
I love you dude And pigeons rock they deserve to be in the city and in this world just as much as we do
I think this is his idea if promoting his art. Increasing bird boxes will not increase birds... Instead why not allow trees to grow and habitats to develop which encourgae a healthy ecosystem. You can't have both ever expanding cities and expect wildlife to remain in a balanced way.
I feel these are lovely, but may be too close together to really attract most birds, which are very territorial. Nice way to encourage people to think about providing a bit of shelter.
Wonderful idea. Not only are you teaching the general public to be conscientious about birds, but you are brightening up the neighbourhood.
Generally a good idea, but only for sparrows. Other birds like e.g. tits would not like to live this dense. And what happens in like one or two years when the houses are full of nests. How do you make sure somebody cleans them on a regular basis?
