Few things are more important in a romantic relationship than mutual trust. Without it, the couple ought to experience troubles sooner or later.

For this woman, the thought that her husband might be lacking trust came when she found a tracker in her car. After the discovery, she was not 100% sure whether it was lack of trust or him just being concerned about her safety, so she turned to the Mumsnet community, asking if she was being unreasonable to think that he was tracking her. Scroll down to find the full story and the netizens’ reactions below.

Scroll down to find the full story and the netizens’ reactions below, where you will also find Bored Panda’s interview with a licensed clinical psychologist and an Associate Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychology at University of Kentucky, Dr. Shannon Sauer-Zavala, who was kind enough to answer a few of our questions on the importance of trust in a relationship.

Trust is the cornerstone of most interpersonal relationships

Upon finding the AirTag, the woman didn’t know what to think – was her husband concerned for her safety or was he suspicious of something? Though she didn’t have the answer, the OP was seemingly leaning towards the latter, as her spouse did not tell her anything about the tracker. If that was actually the case, such behavior would indicate a lack of trust in the relationship, which is arguably crucial for the success of any close relationship.

“Without trust, we can’t fully open up to people,” a licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Shannon Sauer-Zavala, pointed out in an interview with Bored Panda. “When we can’t truly be ourselves, we can’t settle in and get comfortable in relationships.”

The expert emphasized that trust is a necessary component of any relationship. “People develop beliefs about trust in their earliest relationships with their caregivers. When a baby cries and a parent responds, the infant learns (in the most basic sense) that they can count on others to meet their needs. As we get older, our needs become more sophisticated. We trust others to validate our feelings when we share them, to keep our confidence, and even to show up if they tell us they’ll help us move.

“Importantly, trust is not all or nothing,” Dr. Sauer-Zavala continued. “We may fully trust someone to pay us back or help with a project at school or work, but not feel comfortable sharing sensitive information about ourselves with them. This is completely normal. The best—and the only—way to develop trust with someone is simply to trust them and see how they respond. If they respond well (for example, they pay you back, they provide good advice when you’re upset), then you might feel comfortable sharing more and more. If you have had mostly positive experiences with trust in your relationships, you tend to approach new people with openness.”

People’s level of trust or lack thereof can be influenced by past experiences

Image credits: Anna Shvets / pexels (not the actual photo)

While positive experiences typically result in people approaching others with openness, having previously dealt with broken trust can negatively affect the way individuals view other people and relationships. “For instance, if your partner was unfaithful in a romantic relationship, you may have your guard up around new partners. You may be more likely to interpret neutral events—for example, your partner returning home from work late—as a sign they may be cheating on you,” Dr. Sauer-Zavala said.

Chances are, the OP’s husband deciding to leave a tracker in her car before leaving for a lengthy period of time might have also been influenced by certain experiences in the past. In a piece for Psychology Today, Dr. Sauer-Zavala explained that such behavior might be a defense mechanism, as when people feel vulnerable or unsafe, they tend to behave in a way that allows them to protect themselves, which can be detrimental to the relationship.

Eradicating the likelihood of protective behavior by building trust can arguably lead to a calmer day-to-day, and, consequently, to a more stable relationship. In an interview with Bored Panda, the expert suggested that even people with negative experiences in the past—or even trauma—can build trust in safe relationships over time.

It’s unclear whether or not the OP’s husband had negative experiences in the past and what was the reason for leaving the tracker in his wife’s car. It’s also not specified what the woman decided to do with it, but for that, fellow netizens had some ideas, which they shared in the comment section.

Fellow netizens shared their opinions, some thought she should play with the AirTag to teach the husband a lesson

What a scumbag. Hide the tracker in a hospital and ghost him. I wonder if he responds but I don't think so. He left for 3 THREE weeks for a wedding and they have a new baby !!! Wanna bet he's the one that needs to be tracked !

That's actually a solid idea - see how long it takes him to check in on her at the hospital.

Paused reading to say THREE WEEKS for a wedding, leaving his wife with kids and a new baby. What a giant AH... back to the thread... If he'd put them IN his suitcases, they wouldn't have 'accidentally' fallen out, so, yup, he's a giant AH. Not sure how many kids she has, or what he's normally like when at home, so it's not as easy to advise her to jump straight to divorce ... temporary separation, at first, divorce if he's a giant AH at home, too. Back in the day, mothers had no choice but to remain married. One reason (in the UK, at least), it was hard to get child maintenance - my mum/dad divorced when I was 3, brother, 5, sister 1, in 1965 (she remarried when I was 10, to a great bloke). My bio dad was a DVer who was also cheating on her with his.... secretary! He walked out & stopped paying the mortgage, so she was (SAHM) forced to move into a 2-bed flat with 3 kids, and get a 7am-5pm job to support us (my dad owned his own business, btw), and mum spent numerous hours in the courts over thefollowing 10 years, and he rarely paid anything. BTW, he died alone after being married/divorced 4 times and engaged countless times. #Karma But yeah, it's easier now to do the walk, thankfully.

Someone found an airtag in their grandchild's pocket while at a trip to the Tennessee Aquarium. They don't know if the kid found it and put it there themselves, or if a predator did it. This happened in the city where I live. Unnerving.

Editing to say that I've looked at the original thread, and evidently this is part of a long series of posts by that OP, some which point to an abusive relationship. The history is also that she never does anything but will come back a few months later with an entirely new story, as though the previous one never occurred. This post was in January, and in July she posted an entirely new thread about how she wants to leave the youngest with her sister in law so that she and her husband can have time to themselves. Also, the wedding was in Pakistan where her husband has a large family, so that three weeks also includes visiting extended family. There may be more nefarious stuff going on, but it's probably not a way for the husband to get laid far away from home.

Jesus. I don't get the people who secretly track people in their family. We have life360 that we all use. It's very helpful to know where people are, and if they're headed home or elsewhere. We all can see each other on it. It's useful to make sure we're all safe, especially since we commute over a mountain every day. If you're concerned about safety then just... talk about it like a normal person?

It's so ridiculous too that some parents are requiring they know the location of their ADULT college kid every second of every day. How do you want them to become a mature adult yet want to low jack them like they're a toddler who likes to run off in public?!

Read the thread. It’s from January, so whatever was going to happen has long since happened. Abusive husband, abusive MiL, from a famously misogynistic culture. She got a lot of good advice, some really dangerously stupid advice, and there’s a fairly high likelihood she didn’t follow any of it. Best case she GTFO while she had a three week window to get things done without interference. Worst case, she and her kids are now trapped with an abusive extended family in a 3rd world country with a horrible human rights track record.

The reasonable thing to do is just ask why it was there, and what his intentions were. Then communicate that you didn't like that, and that it was inappropriate and crossed a boundary that didn't need to be set. Don't make assumptions, don't pretend to know what he was thinking. Just talk it out and set boundaries and expectations

If he's that concerned, he wouldn't be leaving you with a newborn for (3) weeks. Plus what can he do for anyone safety wise with and airtag especially being out of the country? AND what in the world takes men (3) whole weeks to get ready for a wedding that you and your family can't go to. Hubby sucks!

This is when you let your friend borrow your car (they have to be in on this) and tell, not ask, just tell your husband that you've done this. Obviously this only works if you don't have to drive the kids anywhere (or you can get a friend to drive you with a different vehicle) see what he says. Cause I doubt he'd not say anything. If he tries to be nonchalant about it ask him why you weren't made aware; if it's a "for your and the kids' safety"

I'd probably draw a face on it with a sharpie, name it, and take pictures of our adventures with the three kids to post on social media while he's gone. Just so he knows where I am at all times. For my safety. Srsly, this is a weird thing to do. The only guy I've ever been with who was bizarrely jealous and suspicious like this was actually cheating on me. He doing it, so he can imagine you doing it.

Everyone giving OP advice about playing stupid dangerous games with her husband, seriously??? Fkg STOP!! Do you know, absolutely that he won't come home and harm her? That she is 100% safe from DV? Will you be there to help her? To keep her from being beaten or worse? Yea, you think you're being clever now, but what if she followed your idiotic suggestions and he came home after 3 weeks enraged? Just STFU because if she gets hurt it's on you!! She needs to report it to the police and tell him innocently that she found a suspicious tracker and reported it to the police to be safe. Let them and him deal with it. She's innocent and God I hope she doesn't listen to any of you suggesting ridiculous ideas that can get her hurt.

Please go directly to the Police station. Yes, there are some situations that point to your husband but I had one of these put on my car and it was nobody in my family. They were actually targeting me.Our house was robbed later after they had gotten our schedule. When this first happened, it was after they had just come out, so nobody had any idea that people were using them for this. Please be safe and get a police report. Have it removed and the police will track it. If your husband did put it in your car, then he will get a very rude awakening, and you'll have to have a very blunt, serious conversation about why he felt the need to do this. But i'm really concerned that this isn't him, and it might be something nefarious.

He's projecting. He intends to fool around for those 3 weeks, and he's assuming she's a scum just like he is. I'd drive down the freeway, sit for about an hour in an odd spot, then rush to the hospital. Find a place to dump the tracker in the hospital, and then go see a movie. Let him freak out for awhile thinking you were on an accident. Or just put it on a bus going cross country. Let him think you're running away.

Taken from the movie DaVinci Code......hide the airtag in a piece of soap (or other garbage) and toss it into a garbage truck (or dumpster). First, of course, you take pictures of where you found it in the car and where you put it and save all of your text alerts from the app - to take to the lawyer when you realize there is no choice but divorce.

Getting a money safety net started, make a safety plan of leaving, get a phone e of my own(burner)and make an account away from where he would know. This guy has a screw loose. This wasn't for your protection. Because what would he do if you were in trouble, with him being so far away? Nah, this was to keep tabs on you. First, I'd talk to a lawyer. Then I'd wait until he gets home and present it to him. It wouldn't surprise me if he was the one cheating. Or attach it under the fender of the next door neighbor's car. They are not that accurate, so it can't distinguish between next door and your home. Send him on a wild goose chase.

Don’t wonder. Ask him as soon as he gets home. Our imagination is a weird thing. We imagine all the worst case scenarios and later it’s much ado about nothing. Sometimes people put Air Tags in vehicles to help locate them if they are stolen. If past behaviors do not cause any suspicion, why now are you wondering?

I think he plans on cheating while out of town (probably already has cheated before the trip) and is trying to gaslight her that "she made him doubt her" so that if/when she actually catches him cheating he can say "you drove me to it".

Package it up and mail it someplace far away. Ask him about it when he returns, but don't expect his answer to be good news. Be prepared to separate. Another option is to wait until he returns and put it in his vehicle if he has one.

I thought a wedding was only in one day maybe two with rehearsals and such. Why 3 weeks? Maybe he's the one who can't be trusted.

Perhaps it fell from one of his bags. That you can easily verify asking him if they have been useful or something like that

If he can track you. Shouldn't you be able to track him? Check him on social media. Contact friends his relations and ask them to contact you about what he's doing. Three weeks for a wedding yeah, riiiiight. A week absolutely tops maybe, but 3? Yeah. Nah.

I would make little dioramas of the air rag in a salon, at the beach, watching tv, cooking a meal etc then the day of the actual wedding send him one every 10 minutes or so!

All these comments are from women saying this guy's a scumbag. Women don't like it cause they are the ones that cheat today. You can't trust modern women. This guy's a boss!

Quiz time, folks. Can you guess who can't find a woman who's prepared to put up with his sh!t, and who refuses to admit that he's the problem?
