“Joke Went Way Too Far”: Woman Gets Upset After Husband Falls For Her Prank

Pranks are a sensitive subject and a bit of a double-edged sword. If you enjoy them, they can add a bit of spice and levity to your life. However, if you hate them or your partner ignores all lines in the sand, things can get quite tense at home. It just goes to show how important it is to respect each other’s boundaries in any relationship.

One anonymous man went viral after turning to the popular AITAH online community for some impartial advice about an argument he had with his pregnant wife. According to the author, his spouse pulled a very nasty prank on him and then tried to make him feel guilty for falling for it. Scroll down for the full story, including the tips that various internet users gave the dad-to-be.

It’s no surprise that not everyone’s a fan of pranks. If they’re too mean, it can end up damaging your relationship

Pranks can do a lot of harm if your audience doesn’t like them. On the other hand, positive humor has a lot of upsides

According to Integrative Psych, the line between harmless fun and unintended consequences can be blurry when it comes to pranks. For one, you have to consider the person you’re pranking, what their sense of humor is, and what their current emotional state is like. If you know that they’re likely to be deeply upset after being pranked, you shouldn’t do it.

In a work environment, pranks can sometimes step over the boundaries of professionalism. And if you’re pranking your family members at home, you should keep in mind that young children might not be able to understand all the nuances of humor just yet. You might end up genuinely causing them emotional distress.

On the other hand, positive humor can be very beneficial to your relationship. Mitch Abblett, Ph.D., explains in an article on Psychology Today how mirthfulness (humor that lifts you) can reduce stress, improve communication with others, and strengthen your bonds with other people. In short, it can deepen your connections and improve relationship satisfaction.

“Mirthfulness is not about mocking yourself or others, nor is it about denying, minimizing, or suppressing pain. It’s about touching the truth of what’s happening in a moment,” Abblett writes. “Mirthfulness is the beginning of something good in your experience when circumstances are perhaps anything but.”

Respecting your partner means taking care not to overstep their boundaries if you’re aware of them

At its core, the main issues the anonymous husband touches on in his post revolve around the distrust between him and his wife, as well as the lack of empathy and respect for his boundaries. To be clear, it’s not that comedy is ‘bad’ here, just how it’s used in relation to what someone else is comfortable with.

On the one hand, humor, lightheartedness, and playfulness are what keep romantic relationships alive and passionate. It’s impossible to imagine a happy and healthy relationship without smiles, laughter, and some gentle teasing.

On the other hand, there are common sense limits to the type of comedy you can use. When you date a person for years, live with them, marry them, and have children with them, then you obviously know where (most of) their limits lie.

To put it a tad bluntly, it’s a bit mean to constantly step over those boundaries for your amusement. It’s not real comedy if you’re the only person laughing while the audience is upset.

You have to learn to be receptive to the type of comedy that your significant other enjoys

For example, if you know that your loved one enjoys humor in all its forms, you could get them tickets to stand-up shows, watch funny movies with them, tell spicier jokes, and even pull some (harmless) pranks from time to time.

However, if they prefer dad jokes, puns, and more lighthearted humor, and hate pranks, you wouldn’t start telling them edgy jokes or try to trick them.

At the time of writing, the anonymous husband’s story has 15k upvotes. Furthermore, as the post went viral on the AITAH subreddit, it garnered 4.7k comments (and counting). Unfortunately, the author of the viral story had his account suspended since opening up online, so we were unable to reach out to him for further comment.

Many internet users were very supportive of the dad-to-be. From their perspective, his wife went too far. There are simply some topics you don’t joke about… especially when you know that your partner hates pranks in the first place.

A few commenters even suggested some equally nasty ways for the man to prank his wife in revenge. However, it’s not really clear how healthy escalating the situation further would be.

What’s your take on the entire situation, dear Pandas? What would you do if you were in the husband’s shoes? What do you think the couple should do next to move past the tense situation? Do you enjoy pranking others and getting pranked or is this a huge red flag for you? We’d love to hear your personal thoughts on all of this, so scroll down to the comments to share them.

Her intention was to upset her husband and then laugh at him because he was upset. What kind of mother is she going to be? How can he ever take any heartfelt conversation at face value ever again? I wouldn't be able to continue being married if lying to me and upsetting me was sport.

First of all, don't give women a pass for decisions like this because they're pregnant. We may be extra emotional and tired but this is over the line. Second, she told you with her own mouth that she cheated on you and and you're supposed to not believe she cheated on you? WTF. She sounds like she gets joy from other people's pain and then backtracks when she gets called out on it. And get DNA test

Perhaps she really did have a fling with her boss and this is her way of deflecting any future suspicions her husband might have. Either way, this is horrible. A prank is supposed to be funny to everyone, including the person being pranked, but this just isn't funny.

Yeah I feel like she did the confession to see how he'd react and when she saw he was reacting badly, she said it was a prank so she could "take it back".

That last YTA is nuts! It's a bad prank that's not in the least bit funny and it should be her who apologises and as for the "grow up and stop moaning to teenagers on Reddit" why can't someone get an outside view? You're horrible to even say that, and you're probably a teenager who thinks nothing of putting people down. Reddit isn't for you or just teenagers you fool! Anyway Rant over! I hope this doesn't split you up. I think as the years have gone by, you've become accustomed to her pranks and you can mostly spot one. I think because of this, she pulled a very stupid thoughtless prank without even thinking of the fact that it would hurt you. Just talk to her and make her understand what she's done. I'd go home and support your heavily pregnant wife. I don't think she'll pull a stunt like this again NTA OP!

This is emotional abuse, if it was a "prank". There's also a good chance she's cheated, told you, and then walked back her confession because she got cold feet. How can you trust her truthfulness when she says she didn't cheat, when she just told you with equal conviction that she did? This goes beyond pranking you by trying to get you to believe a tall story. It's straight up mental cruelty. I would highly recommend insisting on both counselling and a paternity test. She has created a doubt in your mind by confessing to cheating, now you have the right to demand that doubt be set to rest. Brutal truth is, a woman who hasn't cheated, and wouldn't cheat, is not going to sit you down and make a tearful confession that the baby might not be yours unless she straight up wants to hurt you.

Some topics are NOT joke/pranks subjects - divorce, affairs, pregnancy, anything causing trust in the relationship to question!! How OLD is this wife to still indulge in such infantile behavior?! The husband needs to demand a paternity test and go no contact until he has the results. The wife needs to understand all actions have consequences.

NTA: OP. AH: Wife. I couldn't live with someone like that. Constant jokes get old fast, and when you get upset/have enough of it, you're the Bad Guy. I hate the phrase "I was only joking, jeez". My sister's 2nd hubby was like that, but in a sexually insinuating way- I couldn't stand being around him, with his "I was only joking!" response when you reacted negatively. She divorced him 2 years later (which was pretty long, tbh) for making sexual jokes at events as well, and embarrassing her. It can and does ruin relationships, unless you both have similar personalities, I suppose. Pranks are even worse. BTW, his thread on Reddit has been suspended. Not sure why that happens???

The last YTA is stupid af. "Happy wife happy life" is as out of date as "women belong in the kitchen" Why should He have to apologize for HER actions? She's supposedly an adult so shouldnt' need to be infantized to excuse her behavior, also pregnancy is no excuse for this behavior.

Why are people saying the husband was the AH? Really, that is insane to say he overreacted. He is setting boundaries and any single adult in this world should instantly know that this isn't a joke, it is straight up mean. When he called her out on it she should have apologized rather than try to diminish what she did. She was way out of line and good for the husband for leaving. She doesn't get to be the one to determine what is acceptable and what is not when the joke is on her husband. He is making it very clear that this was inappropriate and hurtful. Sounds like things started small and kept building so he got used to it and never set up solid boundaries with her before, happens a lot in relationships when you start tolerating things you would never have tolerated at the start of the relationship because you got used to it. Line has clearly been crossed and she needs to know that.

A prank is supposed to be funny. Its supposed to make tye other person laugh. The fact she didn't immediately appologize as soon as she noticed he was NOT laughing meant she didn't really care if it was an actual prank. Instead she was seeking her own amusement over her partners feelings

NTA. But ... she's ... a load at times, eh? Maybe describing that, this time, due to topic and seriousness of the subject, it did actually, really, hurt you. Is she a bit insensitive at times, anyway, or is that something sort of new, by her? Anyway, ... make clear that some boundaries are there for a reason, and this is one of them, and that she needs to be funnier in future pranks, not just add to the viciousness of it all. Good pranks may make you feel stupid for a moment, granted and all, but this one exceeded this by far. Wouldn't be sure enough to call this a reason to end things, ... child, pregnancy and so ... if you can talk to her, and make believe that you're making believe that this was due to hormones ... so that she gets you're building her a bridge that also warrants the excuse won't be appliable forever, ... that might be my attempt here, so that the overness of it is clear, but without playing power games or a huge load of guilt to be felt.

A good prank of the kind she was aiming for has someone selling, dead serious, something patently absurd. The skill is in acting convincingly straight while telling something that if real would be utterly absurd. Spinning a convincing scenario over something that is actually plausible isn't pranking, it is just deceiving.

In no world is even the thought of being cheated on funny. It is hurtful at best and devastating at worst. No one who cares for you should hurt you for a joke. On top of that, how can you trust someone who lies to you?. Even if they say "just kidding" after. If you can lie so easily to my face, how am I supposed to know when you are telling the truth? When you tell me you are? But what if that's a lie too?

She actually had an affair. She tried to tell him and he got upset. So she backtracked and said it was a joke. He needs a paternity test and a divorce. Anyone who thinks yanking around your emotions is funny, is not a safe partner. And we all deserve to be safe.

This is disgusting and disturbing. It's messed up to me that she's able to simulate emotion so convincingly such as the tears part. I know that some people are great actors, but you have to use your powers for good. This is clearly hurtful and upsetting and likely to damage their relationship forever. If she's not able to understand that, maybe she's not ready for a serious relationship or capable of having emotional sensations to that effect. I wanna blame them if they never trust her again I wouldn't want to be in the same room with them and I'm not even a touchy type of person. This crosses the line.

My favourite part of the NTAs this go round was that they... Currently sitting on their computers responding to a Reddit thread, were insulting all the people currently sitting on their computers responding to a Reddit thread!

What's her next joke? "Sorry honey I miscarried and the baby's dead.....wait a minute, surprise! It's fine". This woman is twisted, I couldn't trust anything she said again, she's shown she's happy to hurt people for her own amusement. Major red flag. Divorce and seek custody.

She's a sociopathic bully. Period. Why did this guy marry her? Playing jokes on people so you can laugh at them for being gullible isn't funny, it's cruel and belittling.

It can be a prank if you and your partner agree on it and fond it funny. Clearly though, this was not a prank.

NTA: OP.

Well ask for a dna test and if she stumbles say you are not joking. Then tell her the pranks stop or all she will see of u is child support and pick ups and drop offs of the child.

She needs to offer a massive sincere apology, acknowledging how badly she f*cked up, get a paternity test to prove she was lying for his peace of mind, set up counseling and swear off all pranks and dishonesty from here on out. Just for starters

"why don't you trust me?" "you just lied to my face." She's a grown up. About to be a mother. Time to learn the difference between a prank and an AH move that causes genuine distress/ terror.

"It was a harmless prank, and it really hurts me that he would believe the lie I wanted him to believe" is a sentence I want her to really inspect for hidden clues. This is low, down there with grabbing someone near a ledge and yelling, "SAVED YOUR LIFE!"

This isn't a prank, it's a sledge hammer to the marriage. It would take a special person to be okay with this, even after therapy. Either way, I'd be demanding a paternity test.

We had this kind of behaviour from men towards their wives and so I wish I could tell OP the same we tell those women: it's not 'pranks'. It's not 'jokes'. Those are meant to make you laugh. She shows abusive behaviour, and it's time to nip it in the bud for yourself and for your kid.

I would bet very good money that this is just more Bored Panda clickbait BS, which is getting to be really, *really* tiresome. This one was a no-win scenario for OP. He fell for her prank, therefore he doesn't trust her. On the other hand, if he didn't fall for it, you know 100% she'd have been ticked off that he thought she was a liar.

This is a form of bullying - troll them, then double down and gaslight them. F**k off to all the "she's pregnant" people - do his emotions suddenly not count? How is what she said remotely a joke? I'm wondering if she did maybe have an affair and was testing the paternity test waters.

There is a bar in a town near me that is referred to as a speak easy. It's perfectly legal, but it's modeled after the ones during Prohibition, even to the extent of being a little difficult to find if you don't know exactly where it is.
