When we hear about bad things happening, especially when many lose their lives at the hands of a few, we need to remind ourselves that people can be good.
"We all have an innate capacity for goodness—and this is the hope for the human race as well as the hope for each individual person in the journey of life," clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst Jennifer Kunst, Ph.D., writes.
"Side by side with our destructive capacity is our constructive capacity—our capacity to do good and to be good, our impulses to love, to care, to help, to heal."

According to Kunst, the way to make the most of your life is to harness this orientation toward goodness so that it has more and more influence over your personality.
"In the context of psychotherapy, we might even say that it is the aim of the psychoanalysis to strengthen each patient's good, constructive capacities so that they can be used productively to manage the destructive elements."
However, Kunst believes that at the same time, it is essential to acknowledge and own the destructive capacities because "it is only when there is a bridge between love and hate that humility, authentic guilt, and forgiveness can make way for healing and restoration."

Everybody using the excuse of "one single person cannot change anything" needs to read this. A single person can create an entire forest, save cultural treasures, can come up with ideas to change the world in a positive way, protect people, raise awareness .... and often one single simple action, like voting, can change a lot.

One night on his way home from an interview he saw an apartment fire, but didn't see anybody outside. He knew who lived there, as they were neighbors, so he jumped into the building and pulled a woman out of her bed to safety. When people called him a hero he said something like "that's way over the top, firefighters do this everyday. I was just a neighbor helping a friend". He is now one of the Senators from New Jersey. He also did a bunch of other really awesome stuff while mayor, is much loved in this part of the country. I volunteer a lot, and met him through that work. He is such a good person, very soft spoken and loves listening to people. Anyways, if you can't tell I am a fan.
I live in Canada and never met him but saw him giving interviews on CNN and MSNBC. I like him a lot.
