If we were to believe the Happiness U-Curve, one of the happiest periods of our lives universally is childhood. It's when we don't have any worries, responsibilities, debts, and life was just generally easier. Different generations have different things that remind them of their early years.
On the "[Heck], I'm Old" subreddit, folks regularly share the things that remind them how old they really are. Old appliances, gadgets, TV shows, actors – many things can tickle our nostalgia. So, why don't you scroll down these posts and see which ones are the most relatable to you? But we warn you: you might find out you're a little bit older than you actually thought.

Load More Replies...I'm still learning lyrics to songs I've been listening to since the early 70's. For instance, in Alice Cooper's "Schools Out", I'd never noticed the lyric "we can't even think of a word that rhymes".
As I remember, most of the albums I bought during the 70's and 80's had the lyrics on the inside sleeve of the record. Not only the lyrics to each song, but who wrote it, which band member was playing what instrument (sometimes) and the producer.
Yeah, thanks to sites like genius lyrics I'm still finding songs here and there where I had a line wrong. And somehow I totally missed that Brown Sugar was about slaves. I thought it was kind of progressive in the sense it was okay with interracial couples. Then I find out it's about a master banging his slaves. DOH! Decent beat but some of the lyrics are pretty cringe now that I know what they are.
Bennie and the Jets: "She's got electric b00bs, and her mom does too"
It's fun to look back at ourselves in old pictures and rewatch TV shows we loved as kids. Reminiscing about our "golden years" can bring us joy, but we should be careful not to lose ourselves in nostalgia too much. If we do, we might fall victim to nostalgic depression.
Although nostalgic depression isn't an official subtype of depression, mental health experts did use the term back in the 1600s. One doctor used it to describe the melancholy and homesickness that Swiss soldiers used to feel when fighting away from home.

I'll do you one better. when I was a little kid our phone didn't have a dial, you would pick up the phone and that would connect you with an operator tp whom you would give the number you wanted, but you could still slam it down when you were angry and it felt good. For those of you who are curious I am 77 years old
Have a friend who still has, and uses, a phone like this. He's sooooo proud of it.
I remember the rotary phone. We had one until 1979 (I was 12 years old - birthday January 3, 1967) when the Manitoba Phone truck pulled into the farmyard. What had happened was neighbor ladies were trying to phone us to talk to Mom about her making her pastries, but no one could so they called the Manitoba Phone Company to send out a truck. The repair technician discovered that our rotary phone was no longer working so it was replaced by a state-of-the-art touch tone phone.
Strawberry Or Chocolate
Always a spoon, better leverage. And the strawberry Quik.. no thanks, it was gak. On the other hand, I could eat the chocolate Quik, dry, right out of the can with a spoon.
Ohhh yes, I remember it well. The strawberry tasted like pink paint, but it was so good.
When Maxwell House coffee had a key to open the can. The it was "New, No Key!"
Sure do!! Chocolate was THE BOMB, many a tablespoonful went directly into my mouth. LOL Strawberry shown here, not the bomb. LEST we forget BOSCO chocolate syrup!! Also THE BOMB.
In the 1900s, sociologist Fred Davis offered to make a distinction between nostalgia and homesickness. From then on, his peers continued to look into the consequences of nostalgia and to study its benefits. You see, a bit of nostalgia does give us a warm, fuzzy feeling, but that's mostly because it's selective.
Nostalgia is very biased; we tend to romanticize it and remember only the bits that felt good. Even as you scroll through this list, you'll see that people often share nostalgic things associated with happiness, community, their childhood friends, or funny and wholesome memories.

Load More Replies...And my senior year in high school, our class president was the leader of the stoners. He still did a good job.
My High School had a D**G smoking area. I mean it wasn't official, but the smell of weed can't be mistaken for anything else.
I was a sophomore in 2000, had just moved back to jersey and started my new school. Off the lunchroom was a decently sized courtyard that could only be accessed from the lunchroom, and that was the designated smoking area supposedly reserved for seniors who were 18....but teachers never went out there or even paid much attention so i was out there every lunch with all the seniors, getting stoned at 11am in full view of faculty. A simpler time.
My kid's does as well - but that's more for the teachers TRYING to remain calm.
My high school's smoking area was a couple of picnic tables outside. It opened at the start of my junior year, age 16. Prior to that the smoking area was Brownsville Station ("Smoking in the Boys' Room.") I was delighted that I could now do my business and not have the toilet paper be on fire.
We used to have designated smoking areas, but I would sometimes leave to visit a friend's house nearby. Although I didn't smoke weed frequently, that was the main reason for us all going there. But after this incident, I never did it again: After visiting dude's house during lunch, I arrived late to science class, and everyone was already working on their lab projects. I walked in with a straight face, but within two minutes, I ended up on the floor under my lab table, laughing uncontrollably. I don't know what set me off, but remember the teacher sitting with one leg propped on another desk, trying to talk to someone about their project while they stared at me. The more I looked up at them and my classmates, the harder I laughed. It was the kind of laugh that almost makes you gag. Eventually, I managed to pull myself together. It was both embarrassing and amusing, but I never went to school high on weed again.

Had this merry-go-round in the park near our house, and we played Jarts (lawn darts) like the game 10,000 - someone throws one up, and you catch it by the tail for points. (And I'm still alive and perfectly perambulatory!)
Might have lost contact with a few classmates over the years, though ...

I remember at day care a little girl fell and knocked her front teeth out on one of these. Back at it the next day...
Somehow I flew off one of these and ended up under it. I remember pain and blood.
My sister broke her arm playing on one of these. It was the '50s--long before everybody sued everybody.
Yup. Had my first flying lesson on one of these bad boys. Not my only one, either. Had to take that lesson multiple times. ;)
Those merry go rounds were great and while there may have been some crying no bones were broken. Some bruises and a cut with a little blood now and then.
In 2021, a team of researchers found that our response to nostalgic memories depends on whether they're generated on request or just come to us in our daily lives. When you open your phone and go through old pictures on purpose, you'll rate these nostalgic recollections more positively. If some memories just catch you off guard throughout the day, you might dwell more on their negative side.

We sometimes look back to the past to feel better about the present. When we're lonely, depressed, or just plain sad, we like to go back to the good ol' days and reminisce about how good they were. That prompted some researchers to suggest that nostalgia itself can make us feel more lonely, sad, and even depressed.

But since it's the first time there is something where they have only exactly one of, they start fighting over it. When one person gets hurt they decide that it's not for them and they have to give it back to the gods. One guy sets out to toss the bottle over the edge of the world. There are some other storylines as well. It's a really good movie!

Yet other researchers have found that our response to nostalgic memories depends on how we're feeling that day. If we're already feeling lonely, nostalgic memories may exacerbate those feelings. "Nostalgia did not attenuate, but rather exaggerated the negative effects of loneliness on affective well-being," the authors of one study concluded.

I'm 18 years old and this would have been me if I'd been allowed. Kids do still love to play outside and in the dirt
Same alley, same fence, probably the same dirt... Do I see Bobby and David! My brother Tom! Folks, this is close enough to how it was to bring tears.
The only thing missing is the garden hose to fill one the holes and make a lake for the cars to jump over, Dukes of Hazard style. One time, we made one so big and left the water running for too long and basically created a massive swamp in our back yard. We called it the Okee Dokee Phenokee swamp.
Always Funny
But enough about the bad side of nostalgia; it has a bright side, too! Research shows that nostalgia can boost our sense of social belonging and give us a sense of meaning. A 2023 study on nostalgia's effect on loneliness by Andrew Abeyta, PhD, a Rutgers University psychology professor, revealed that lonely people who go on trips down memory lane report feeling a greater sense of meaning.

LOL, OP and the "grandmother" comment. *I* had one. (Dang, I think I'm old.)
Doubled as a high chair for my kids, my MIL would tie a scarf around their waist.
When my son was three, we were at my grandmother's house and he was playing with the steps and they hit him in the crotch. He started to cry and said, "Mummy, it hit my penis!" but Nanny didn't hear that, so she said, "Come here, sweetie. I'll kiss it better!" So I quickly told her where the steps had hit him! She altered her statement to, "I'll kiss your head." The kid bought it and stopped crying.

Social psychologist Clay Routledge, PhD, vice president of research and director of the Human Flourishing Lab, told the APA that nostalgia can help people move forward. "It makes people more optimistic about the future, it boosts well-being, it reduces anxiety, it increases positive mood and self-esteem and meaning in life. But more than that, it makes people thankful, and it energizes them."

I miss those time SO much. No-one likes to talk about it but after our childhood is over and the teenage years have passed your time is pretty much stolen from you. Because at some point it was decided that we all need to scramble and work our butts off just to survive. You work or you starve. It's tyranny.
Nostalgia is also good for our future well-being. As a social psychologist from the University of Winchester, Verbon Cheung, explained to WaPo, it activates a sort of "mental highway" we can use to project into the future. When we remember past successes and friendships, it drives us to pursue new goals, meet new people, or even reconnect with old acquaintances.

I still had to replace my drive side window twice, but at least insurance covered it. Sucked that I couldn't park there nights any more.
But Are You This F**kn Old?
Oh, yes. This is when Sears was king and they had set up one of these in the electronics section. There was like 60-70 of us crammed in that section watching two dudes playing it. I can't express how profound that moment was because until then it was all pinball machines and mechanical games. Then 4-5 years later came Star Wars. It was a mind expanding time to be alive.

Sort of similar to the Monkeys when some of them couldn't play any instruments. I also laughed at the people I saw saying some version of how they loved their music until they found out, then hated it. A good song is still a good song, even if you find out the singer is a different person than you thought.

The "real" band who actually made music was already behind 2-3 bands previously, when they realized they need good looking front cover. After the revelation they tried to make music under the moniker The Real Milli Vanilli, but it lasted as long as this one.
Hard to stomach that they won best new artist grammy. Indigo Girls we up for that award that year and absolutely should have been given the grammy after the lip-synching was discovered and their "win" tainted. Amy and Emily have created so much GREAT music over the last 30 years and continue touring. When was there a recent Millie Vanilli album or tour?

Mac Tonight, ads originally aired from 86-89 (and yes that's when my 41 year old a*s remembers them from) BUT, the campaign did reappear briefly between 96-97.
Remember When Air Was Free?
In California, it’s still free. By law, if you go into the convenience store and ask clerk to turn on air, they must. Don’t fall for putting in the quarters.
I remember when the gas station attendant would offer to check your tire pressure and fluids while your gas was pumping. Topping everything up was just part of the service. Also, gas was less than a dollar/gallon.
Gas was less than a dollar a gallon, but minimum wage was less than $2 an hour.
Load More Replies...I remember the guy pumping gas checking the air in the tires and the oil !
It still is if you know where to look. Those stations that continue to offer it without charge gain an extra element of respect from me.
wasn't that back when we were still collecting/recycling glass bottles for about 5 cents each?
Tears For Fears
I hate that song. I like other songs of theirs, but that one annoys me.

If You Can Smell This Photo…
Exact color my dad used on our model car build, 1959 corvette. He painted it by hand.....then sanded it down, painted it again, sanded it down....like 7 or 8 coats until you could literally see your reflection in it.
Don't do d**g$ kids! But, here, put together a model with this glue and these paints...
I still have my old set. The gold and silver need to be reconstituted but the others are still in great condition!
Testor's PLA Enamel! been around since the 50's! I painted many an Aurora or AMT model kit with these paints! And Testor's glue... untill people started sniffing the stuff! :(
And it took ages to dry. Whilst the black dried so fast, you ruined the paint job before you were done
Were You One Of These Kids?
Oh this brings back memories, I can see piles of those wires stripped at both ends in my mind right now 😁
I had this: https://www.petervis.com/Radios/making-a-transistor-radio-ladybird-book/making-a-transistor-radio-ladybird-book.html (although the final form of the radio didn't work well - apparently, the layout made the circuit unstable).
Tell Me I'm Not The Only One Who Thinks This
This is how old I am. Our local 'Thrifty Acres' , Meijer, had recycling glass and metal in the parking lot by the hwy. Had a cafeteria, barber and beauty shop on the mezzanine, an ice cream stand (Purple Cow, with Ogden Nash poem on the sign), Sandy the horse ride for 1 cent. Alll goooone, except Sandy. Fred Meijer must be spinning in his grave.
Our local version was Sage's. Grocery store with a coffee shop/diner with fresh pies and you could watch the lady make them. It had a nursery out front, a separate liquor store area, a hot foods deli, pharmacy, and a miscellaneous items area where you could buy records, tools, clocks, and whatever else they could cram into the space. Oh, and a big toy store across the street.
Load More Replies...I still go there. They kind of suck in some ways but the prices of of the Equate brands for like products are pretty good. The trick to enjoying Walmart is to people watch while telling yourself, "I'm not like THOSE people". LOL PS - in my youth we didn't have a Walmart. The one big box store we had was K-Mart. And I can recall when that was a new / cool addition. No walmart, no mall. Kmart was literally the only large store around with a variety of product.
Christina, I miss the old Kmart. Back in the days when the blue light specials were legit good deals. The variety seemed larger too, but I'm not sure if that is perception based on the lack of other choices at the time. Unfortunately our local Kmart became such a sad shell of itself my friend and I agreed they were going to close long before it was announced. And I think the staff knew it as well. Closer to the end of things, on a shopping visit I pointed out to the employee an outdated food product I found on the shelf. She just sort of shrugged and said they do the best they can with the people they have. Or something like that. It felt like, "The ship is sinking so we don't really care."
Load More Replies...Nah, I still like going on occasion. It just depends on how much i need to get done.
its always funny to look at old walmart ads and see how much has changed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJwBT1sgshk
Rip To This Beautiful Legend
In The 70s I Grew Up In A House Where We Wheeled The Dishwasher Around And Hooked It Up To The Faucet
I bought one of those in 2019, though it was a darn sight smaller than that.
That looks like the exact model my grandmother had. Family dinners were almost every night, with 15 people, that thing had to get hooked up every single night. Don't know why they didn't have it plumbed up properly.
Critics Didn’t Like It. It Bombed At The Box Office, But I Liked It. Who Else?
Just watched it again a few months ago. Totally holds up. My little brother and I saw it on the big screen in first run.
"Zammies!" At least, I think that's what he called the wee outfit he was knitting...
I See Your Pop Snaps And Raise You This.. Are You This Old ?
It is a pop cap dart or so-called cap bomb. It is a toy allowing kids to make a small explosion by placing a cap on the tip of the dart and let it hit the ground to let it pop.
I always thought the sound of the metal tip hitting the concrete was louder than the cap inside exploding.

Old Enough To Know Who These Two Grifters Were
Yep. Predecessors of Joel Osteen, TD Jake's, Creflo Dollar. Every single televangelist is no better than the orange buffoon in the white house. They care nothing for others unless they can get money out of them.
100% They are the worst people on the planet. The one I hate the most is Kenneth Copeland. That creep is the picture of greed.

This Was The Face Of Public Health When I Was A Kid. Are You Old Enough To Remember Him?
Appointed because he was so conservative politically, but kept to the science and said a lot of things the right wing did not like at all.
He was the one who pushed and pushed Reagan to talk about HIV and AIDS. Reagan could barely say the word "homosexual" and because of him not listening to Coop, AIDS got a foothold in this country and has never let go since then. One of the many, many reasons I hate Reagan. I remember a time when there were no cases of AIDS in the US.

You Are F**king Old, If You Ever Dressed Up Just Because You Were Flying Somewhere
Not only old enough to have dressed up, but my dad made use of the little ashtray in the chair arm through the whole flight.
Interestingly, planes had better air quality when smoking was allowed because they had to bring fresh air in to vent the smoke. Now the air is just recycled endlessly.
Anyone watched Hercule Poirot with David Suchet? All day dressed in suit, but still going to change for dinner!
My parents insisted on me wearing a jacket and tie every time I got on a plane. No one else on the plane ever had one, so I was always confused.
i may be old but i miss the days when people actually dressed to go out not really dressed up but at least covered themselves , the underwear and didnt wear pajamas to the store

I'm sure that phenomenon has not lessened today, even though she's pitching in another league. Probably has increased it.
"Giddy up, giddy up, giddy up a maumau ..." Actually, it was an old song written by Dallas Frazier in 1966 long before Cassandra Peterson invented her Elvira character in 1981. Many singers, such as Kenny Rogers, had recorded versions before the Oak Ridge Boys.

It's why we have those 'safety seals' on everything. I don't think they ever found the person.
It's kinda crazy to think they didn't seal medicine up. We were a much more trusting society.

Gotta say it with the "parent-done-with-your-BS" tone...or like Madea. "Get ya àss in this mufukkin house right now before I beat ya àss!"

How meager life would be if we were restricted only to what we could personally experience between the time we're born and the time we die, within the range we can walk. If the universe hasn't gotten around to giving us teleporters and time machines yet, we can perhaps make shift with books, internets, and various media, and communities, physical and online. I luxuriate in being able to live in worlds that were gone long before I was born, and to look at possible worlds to come.
